SUMMARY:Meet the artist - Guided Tour & Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Led by Géza Starmüller\, this workshop takes a participatory artistic format\, fostering direct dialogue between artists and audiences. Participants are encouraged to engage in shared creative processes and moderated discussions\, exploring themes of philosophy\, history\, and contemporary art. The programme moves beyond traditional presentation models\, emphasising collaboration\, critical thinking\, and collective reflection in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. \nThe guided tour offers an open platform where artistic practice and intellectual exchange meet in a live\, communal\, and warm setting. \n\n\nGéza Starmüller (b. 1966\, Cluj) is a contemporary visual artist and sculptor based in Transylvania. The fourth generation of artists in his family\, his practice is rooted in a lifelong engagement with art\, supported by both family heritage and formal training. He studied sculpture at the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca and further developed his practice through private mentorships and international art camps. \nWorking primarily with conceptual and spiritual foundations\, his artistic language unfolds through oil painting and bronze sculpture\, and more occasionally through stone and wood. His work explores the moment when spirit penetrates matter\, an approach he defines as cosmic surrealism. Influenced by philosophy\, diverse cultures\, personal life experience\, and place\, his creative process often begins with an intuitive vision that matures over the years into its final form. \nStarmüller has participated in numerous national and international group exhibitions and has contributed to major public art projects\, including the restoration of the Statue of Liberty in Arad\, as well as other monuments in Romania and abroad.

SUMMARY:The Balanas Sisters: live at The Mildmay Club
DESCRIPTION:Having grown up in the small Latvian town of Dobele\, Kristine and Margarita Balanas moved to the UK in their teens. Since studying together at the Royal Academy of Music in London\, they have performed together at New York’s Carnegie Hall\, the Sydney Opera House\, Berlin Philharmonie\, and London’s Royal Albert Hall\, Barbican\, and Royal Festival Hall. \nThis performance\, their first since signing a record deal with Decca Classics\, is an intimate exploration of duet repertoire for violin and cello. Taking place in Newington Green’s iconic working people’s club The Mildmay Club\, the programme centres around compositions by Maurice Ravel and fellow Latvian Peteris Vasks\, complimented by new arrangements of George Frideric Handel and Antonio Vivaldi made specially for The Balanas Sisters. \nRavel’s Sonata for Violin and Cello features at the heart of the evening. Written in memoriam of Claude Debussy\, it finds common aesthetic ground with Vasks’ Castillo Interior\, a meditative and spiritual piece inspired by the writings of St Teresa of Ávila. It’s a journey of discovery that mirrors the sisters’ own path in music\, a theme of personal reflection which links together all the music in the programme at this one-off London show.

SUMMARY:Gould Piano Trio
DESCRIPTION:The famous Gould Piano Trio perform a concert of German masterworks\, culminating in Schubert’s B-flat trio\, one of the triumphs of the trio repertoire. They pair this with Haydn’s late E major trio\, in turn playful and highly expressive\, and a trio by Heinrich Marschner. Marschner (1795-1861) was regarded as one of the most important composers in Germany in the nineteenth century\, a friend of Beethoven and Mendelssohn and a strong influence on Schumann. Particularly well known for opera and lieder\, his chamber works also have an operatic and vocal quality\, especially in their beautiful and distinctive melodies.

SUMMARY:Jasdeep Singh Degun: live at The Old Church
DESCRIPTION:Jasdeep Singh Degun stands out as one of the most innovative and awarded sitarists of his generation. Born in Leeds\, he masterfully blends Indian classical music with contemporary influences\, reinventing the horizons of the sitar. Trained under the guidance of Ustad Dharambir Singh MBE\, Jasdeep has mastered the gayaki ang technique\, a lyrical style that imitates the human voice\, giving his playing a unique expressive depth. \nIn recognition of his outstanding contributions\, Degun was awarded the Songlines Best Newcomer Award\, an Asian Achievers Award\, and made history as the first sitar player and British-Asian musician to win the Royal Philharmonic Society Instrumentalist award. \nSigned to Real World Records\, Jasdeep’s latest album Jogkauns was his first purely Indian classical album. Recorded with tabla player Harkiret Bahra\, Jogkauns offers a deeply immersive listening experience\, rooted in the Imdad-Khani gharana — the North Indian classical tradition in which Degun has trained. \nThe album is structured as a traditional Indian classical concert\, presenting the entirety of the music within a single raag — Raag Jogkauns\, a relatively modern evening raag that combines the moods of Raag Jog and Raag Malkauns. The result is a performance that unfolds organically\, balancing improvisation with careful attention to the arc of melody and rhythm. \nUsually seen on the sold-out stages of the Royal Festival Hall\, Barbican Centre\, and WOMAD Festival\, this performance is a rare opportunity to witness Jasdeep’s skill up close – in Stoke Newington’s intimate Old Church. \n  \nTraditional Musicians

SUMMARY:Mr Nobody Against Putin
DESCRIPTION:When Russia invades Ukraine\, schoolteacher Pavel “Pasha” Talankin becomes an unlikely dissident. In a small industrial town\, he is beloved by his students for his humor\, creativity\, and care. But as patriotic lessons\, military drills\, and state propaganda take over classrooms\, Pasha begins filming. \n\nOver two years\, he covertly documents the transformation of the school into recruitment grounds for war\, children drawn into the machinery of indoctrination\, and colleagues silenced under new repressive laws. What emerges is a gripping\, intimate portrait of life under a tightening regime and one man’s quiet courage. Haunted by his past and risking everything\, Pasha exposes the erosion of truth and the resilience of those who dare to resist from within\, even at great personal cost. \nDavid Borenstein\, Pasha Talankin\, Denmark\, Czech Republic\, Germany\, 2025\, 90’\, English subtitles \n\nAdmission: £5 (+ Eventbrite fee)\nBOOK NOW\n\nThe screening commemorates the four-year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine\, a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle for peace and justice. \nIn collaboration with the Danish Embassy in London. \n

SUMMARY:In Five Years' Time - a new opera
DESCRIPTION:In Five Years’ Time is a ‘drama in song’ based on an experimental play by Spain’s favourite poet\, Federico García Lorca\, who described the work as a meditation on the passing of time. The surreal plot explores themes of love\, identity and decay\, yet does so in the manner of a fairy tale\, clothed in fun and topsy-turvy. Lorca himself said it was impossible to stage\, but The Music Troupe has put together a cast of 8 superb singers – playing 14 roles – to bring this operatic adaptation to life in the style of a cabaret. Displaying Edward Lambert’s trademark lyricism\, the music is stimulating and accessible while the drama and poetry are uniquely heart-rending. Five years to the day after completing the draft\, when the nationalists rose up on the outbreak of civil war\, Lorca was executed and the play turned out to posses more than a hint of prophecy. \nJoin us in the atmospheric surroundings of The Space Theatre in London’s East End for the first performances of this exciting new opera. \nFederico: James Schouten (tenor)\nBridesmaid 1 / Dying Child: Rosalind Dobson (soprano)\nBridesmaid 2 / Dying Cat: Mae Heydorn (mezzo–soprano)\nBelisa / Italian Countess: Lucy Gibbs (mezzo–soprano)\nRosita: Fiona Hymns (soprano)\nPedro / Colombina: Jean-Max Lattemann (counter–tenor)\nJuan / Arlecchino: Chris Murphy (baritone)\nFernando / Pierrot: Thomas Stevenson (bass)\nMusic: Edward Lambert\nWords: adapted by the composer after the play Así que pasen cinco años (1931)\nMusical Director / Piano: Alistair Burton\nAccordion: Jing Jia\nLighting: Simon Pike\nMovement: Jenny Weston\nStage Director: Walter Hall

The show will be open to the public from Friday\, 27th February to Saturday\, 28th February from 10 am to 7 pm each day. \n” Childhood is full of wild invention\, messy logic and unfiltered fun\, where fantasy is instinctive and always alive…but as we grow older\, that same sense of whimsy and wonder often fades. ‘Imagine that!’ playfully explores the tension between childhood and adulthood\, the ongoing tug-of-war between responsibility and fun\, and the internal battle to keep imagination alive. It celebrates the effort it takes to stay playful\, and the stubborn persistence of childhood imagination that refuses to behave!” – The Cameron Twins \nThe Cameron Twins are identical twins and contemporary British artists whose practice centres on hand-pulled screen printing\, layered processes\, and expressive hand-painted mark-making to create emotionally charged works rooted in nostalgia\, childhood imagery\, and pop culture. Over a short period of time\, they have built a dedicated international following\, and their work has been sold at Bonhams\, is held in significant private collections\, and has led to collaborations with brands including Bang & Olufsen\, LØCI\, and Gresham Blake. \nOpen to the Public: Friday 27th & Saturday 28th February\, 10:00 am – 7:00 pm (both days) \nLocation: Protein Studios\, 31 New Inn Yard\, London EC2A 3EY \n

SUMMARY:When Vincent Met John
DESCRIPTION:Vincent Van Gogh died in 1890\, John Lennon died in 1980\, both of gunshot wounds to the chest. But imagine what might have happened had the two greatest artists of their time met? \nThis hypothetical meeting between John Lennon and Vincent van Gogh is the premise of a new play by actor and writer Nick Wilkes. We all know that Vincent van Gogh was a nineteenth-century Dutch Post-Impressionist painter and amongst the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. We all know John Lennon was an English singer\, songwriter\, musician and peace activist who gained worldwide fame with The Beatles. \nWhat we don’t all know is that five years before their respective deaths both men went through profound change\, and this is what has inspired playwright Nick Wilkes to bring these two cultural giants together.
