SUMMARY:Innovations for a Sustainable Future; AR Interactive Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:A brand-new interactive exhibition touching on the fast-evolving digital revolution as well as the pressing challenges faced by our generation. With both Europe and the world undergoing a major technological transformation\, new phenomena such as artificial intelligence are slowly making their way into all aspects of our lives\, from communication to health\, from culture to sustainability. What are the innovations and scientific discoveries shaping our future? \n\n\n\nThe Innovations for a Sustainable Future exhibition seeks to create a dialogue between science\, society\, culture\, and art. Its main aim is to address current global issues and the inevitable role science and new technologies will play in reaching the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set up by the United Nations in 2015 as a blueprint for a better\, more sustainable future for all. The 17 SDGs were adopted by all UN member states agreeing to work on\, among other things\, a plan to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger\, achieve gender equality and avert climate threats by 2030. \n\n\n\nThis interactive augmented reality exhibition was artistically rendered by the renowned Czech graphic designer Pavel Fuksa\, drawing from the concept of the successful Czech Innovation Expo which travelled the world presenting Czech scientific discoveries and innovations. The new London exhibition highlights innovations and issues on a European level\, reflecting the higher purpose of science with special emphasis on the means needed to implement the ambitious SGDs. \n\n\n\nHow the Exhibition WorksVisitors will see seemingly static outdoor panels with abstract symbols on the walls. After downloading the exhibition app (available free for Android and iOS)\, they will see the space around them come to life on their devices\, allowing them to explore in a fun and unique way a variety of scientific stories and fascinating information about technological innovations contributing to our sustainable future. \n\n\n\nEXHIBITION WEBSITE \n\n\n\n\nExhibition dates: 14 July – 15 October\n\n\n\nPrivate View: Thursday 13 July 2023\, 6.30-8.30 pmFree\, all welcome\, with complimentary drinks – REGISTER NOW\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition was created by the Czech Centres in collaboration with the Czech Technology Agency. Organised by the Czech Centre London in association with the Czech Embassy.

SUMMARY:RAF Museum Presents Horrible Histories: Up in the Air Adventure
DESCRIPTION:This summer\, fasten your seatbelts as the RAF Museum presents Horrible Histories Up in the Air Adventure. Get ready to experience the (sometimes gruesome) history of flight in the Horrible Hangar. Meet fearless and foolish flyers and solve the clues in this fully interactive experience for all the family. \n\n\n\nBased on the Horrible Histories book\, ‘Up in the Air’\, written by Terry Deary and illustrated by Martin Brown\, the RAF Museum will bring characters from the book to life with some of the truly brainless blunderers pursuing the desire to fly! \n\n\n\nLegendary aviation pioneers from throughout history will be on hand to steer you around six amazing zones for one fantastic adventure\, including the Engineer’s Workshop; Barnstorming Braves; Creation Station; Meet the Inventor; Selfie Zone and the Up in the Air Challenge.Bespoke Horrible Histories activity packs and a free Twinkletoes Trail around the Museum are also on offer for visitors throughout the summer break. Not only did Twinkletoes the cat feature in the book\, she’s the Transatlantic traveller and lucky charm of Arthur Whitten Brown who flew on the first ever non-stop transatlantic flight in 1919. Twinkletoes is the purrfect character to guide you round the Museum and can also be spotted on display at the Museums Midlands site over the summer. \n\n\n\nThis year celebrates the 30th anniversary of Horrible Histories – the world’s bestselling historical book series for children. \n\n\n\nThe Horrible Histories Up in the Air Adventure runs from Saturday 22 July until 3 September\, with three 2-hours sessions daily. \n\n\n\nAdvanced booking is strongly advised for this immersive experience. Tickets are £7.50 per person\, or £25 for 5 people on our group saver ticket. Book now for a great day out this summer\, just go to https://www.rafmuseum.org/london/

SUMMARY:Hooray For The Here And Now - Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Hooray for the Here and Now is the first solo exhibition by multi-disciplinary artist Sam Haynes. The exhibition title reflects the positive outlook that defines her practice. \n\n\n\nStraddling sculpture and photography to balance an intuitive\, playful process within a structural framework\, the artist presents an ambiguous body of work that defies categorisation. Assemblage photo works will be shown alongside a series of sculptures constructed using materials sourced from the recent renovation of the gallery space itself. \n\n\n\nHaynes uses light and shadow to manipulate perspective and perception. Found objects and everyday materials are elevated to luxury items\, and precarious constructions are granted longevity in fine art photography\, introducing an element of drama and celebration to a fleeting moment. A public art background and experience collaborating with marginalised communities inform her work in equal measure. \n\n\n\nMaking connections is paramount\, whether between materials or across disciplines\, between artist and viewer\, or ultimately within wider society. \n\n\n\nOn Saturday 23 September\, Sam Haynes will be in conversation with Sheryll Catto\, Artist Director & CEO of the artist development agency ActionSpace\, to discuss her creative process and the influence of community on her practice today. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition closes with an opportunity to meet some of the Sound Minds artists who open their studios to visitors on 30 September. \n\n\n\nExhibition open times: Monday-Sunday\, 12 noon to 5pm during exhibition period 21-30 September \n\n\n\nPrivate View: Wednesday 20 September\, 6-9pm \n\n\n\nAddress: Bloom Gallery\, Sound Minds\, 20-22 York Road\, London SW11 3QA

SUMMARY:PHIL TYLER & SARAH HILL + MEN DIAMLER
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nPHIL TYLER & SARAH HILLMEN DIAMLER \n\n\n\nMonday 25 SeptemberWest Hampstead Arts Club\, 32 Mill Lane\, London\, NW6 1NR7.30pm | £7.50 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/q7a22698549aPHIL TYLER & SARAH HILL met in Newcastle\, where they sang Sacred Harp and songs in folk clubs. After a while\, they decided to record an album together\, but not long after this\, after one sole gig with Alasdair Roberts\, Sarah’s work took her to live in Brighton. Fortunately\, their far-flung locations didn’t disrupt the musical partnership too much\, and last year saw their stunning album ‘What We Thought Was A Lake Was A Field Of Flax’ released on Ferric Mordant. Their songs are primarily traditional\, learned from versions by folk legends like Shirley Collins\, Bob Copper\, Martin Carthy and Peggy Seeger\, although two – Sweet Lemney and Golden Lads – have tunes by Tyler and the latter words from their mutual friend Jo Ellis. The album was recorded by Newcastle artist/producer Phil Begg in an unadorned\, simple manner that captures the warmth of Hill and Tyler’s voices\, the interplay of their duets and Tyler’s fine guitar\, banjo and ukulele playing. \n\n\n\nhttps://philtylersarahhill.bandcamp.com/album/what-we-thought-was-a-lake-was-a-field-of-flax \n\n\n\nMEN DIAMLER is a singer from the deepest\, darkest Wales\, who began unravelling the dark swab of provincial England through song in 2005. A serial songwriter and performer of some repute\, he has cited Jacques Brel\, Townes Van Zandt\, Alan Vega and Iggy Pop as influences. He recorded sessions for Marc Riley’s 6 Music Show\, Radio X and Resonance FM.   Men Diamler’s performances are now very rare since he has taken up a more lucrative career in traffic counting.http://www.bandcamp.com/mendiamler

Instruments played by humans\, bare feet touching the ground. Wrinkled button-downs\, sweaters filled with holes\, music audibly and sometimes visibly made by humans. Can you change the strings on your guitar? Maybe\, can you buy me dinner? Lock up your Rickenbackers\, and Thee Jasmine Monk is coming to town. Can they stay on your couch? The Smashing Times’ new album will be coming out on K Records soon.https://thesmashingtimes.bandcamp.com \n\n\n\nJOWE HEAD is a musician and artist from the Midlands of England\, now living in Hackney\, in east London. He started his musical career in his home town of Solihull with various school friends in 1972\, a project that came to be known as Swell Maps. This group emerged in the late 1970s and is now known as pioneers of what is now referred to as the Alternative Rock or Post-Punk scene. They set up their own independent record label and mixed Punk Rock with experimental and psychedelic sounds. Swell Maps released four singles and two albums in a brief but dramatic career that led to them topping the UK independent charts and influencing bands such as Sonic Youth\, Nirvana\, and Blur. When they broke up\, Jowe joined Television Personalities. Ten years with the TVPs saw Jowe making more influential records\, touring Europe regularly\, and playing in Japan and the USA. SUMMARY:APOSTILLE + MARINA ZISPIN
DESCRIPTION:APOSTILLE is a man who’s torn through enough systems to know the difference between gesture and meaning. Alongside running his own DIY record label\, Night School Records\, Glasgow native Michael Kasparis has previously made forays into the realm of hardcore punk with his group Anxiety and The Lowest Form. Throughout all this\, his solo electronic venture Apostille has continued to evolve with each twist and turn of the world. What started off as a quest to whip up a mood and force that into a song has steadily become more of a mission in communication. The third Apostille album\, ‘Prisoners Of Love And Hate’\, is released on Night School on September 22nd. \n\n\n\n\nhttps://apostille.bandcamp.com/album/prisoners-of-love-and-hate\n\n\n\n\nMARINA ZISPIN\, aka synth pop apparitions Bianca Scout and Martyn Reid\, have been haunting the shores of Newcastle/London since forming Marina Zispin in the summer of 2018. Together\, they occupy the infinite twilight space that exists between fantasy and reality. Juxtaposing the sacred and mundane\, they transform the selected minutia of their everyday existence into the totems and litanies that comprise their stream of conscious anthems of interdimensional melancholia. Marina Zispin released their debut 12” on Night School in September 2023.

DESCRIPTION:You stand in a dark room\, swirling ice in an empty glass\, wondering if the frosty feeling in your heart will ever thaw.A shadowy silhouette shrouded in purple light approaches you.Their voice is soft and low; the velvet grace of the words\, the transcendent covenant\, is just a sketch of the things to come. \nYour pulse quickens\, and the breath catches on your lips. \n \nThe Poetry Brothel is an immersive and captivating performance that aims to revive poetry as a communal experience reminiscent of ancient rituals and ceremonies. Its rotating cast of poets adopts unique personas to cater to different poetic tastes. SUMMARY:Pay Day Parties at Signal Brewery
DESCRIPTION:With the cost-of-living crisis threatening to ruin summer and the UK beer industry\, Signal Brewery is launching a series of Pay Day Parties to keep (literal and metaphorical) spirits high in South London. \n\n\n\nTaking a “glass half full” approach to the current climate\, Signal Brewery (which sits on the border of the Croydon and Sutton Boroughs) is launching a programme of fun\, affordable events that include monthly Pay Day Parties. \n\n\n\nThese will see the Taproom extend onto the forecourt to become the go-to place for an affordable\, quality outdoor drinking experience in South London this summer. \n\n\n\nTaking place on the last Saturday of each month (from 12 pm to 7 pm)\, tickets cost just £5 per person and include a free pint of beer and slice of VENTI pizza on arrival. \n\n\n\nHappy Hours will run between 1 pm and 4 pm – during which a pint of beer will cost just £4 (well below the London average!). A 25% discount on all other drinks (including wine and spirits) will also run during these hours\, further helping to keep costs down. \n\n\n\nFree beer tastings\, led by the expert team\, will take place (inside the brewery itself) throughout the day\, giving guests the opportunity to learn more about (and sample) the range of beers brewed onsite. \n\n\n\nAs Signal is also a small batch producer of Vodka\, Rum and an award-winning Gin\, guests will also be able to enjoy cocktails throughout the day while a DJ playing club classics will keep the party spirit flowing until the early evening.

SUMMARY:BEAUTY IN EVERY SMILE
DESCRIPTION:Smile Train UK – the world’s largest cleft charity – have released a series of unfiltered images celebrating the beauty and diversity in smiles\, to support their new nationwide campaign\, Beauty in Every Smile. \n\n\n\nCaptured by London-based photographer Fanny Beckman\, who is renowned for using art to raise awareness of social injustice and inequalities\, the images feature 12 cleft-affected people from across the UK\, who have come to love their smiles after facing stigma\, mistreatment and/or discrimination as a result of their facial difference. \n\n\n\nLaunched in time for World Smile Day® (6 October)\, the images are being showcased on giant 2-metre high panels in a public exhibition on London’s busy South Bank\, from 9am on Thursday 5 October to 4pm on Saturday 7 October. \n\n\n\nCommenting on the exhibition images\, Fanny Beckman\, says: “Beauty in Every Smile has truly been a dream project to work on. Smile Train UK’s work is very much in line with my ethos and what I want to achieve with my photography: to raise awareness of stories that historically have been untold. Art is a powerful tool to use to start conversations\, and I’ve been fortunate to meet many inspiring people during the photoshoots. I am grateful to all the models for sharing their experiences\, and for removing the stigma around being born with a cleft.”  \n\n\n\nA cleft is a facial difference that occurs when a baby’s lip and/or mouth do not fuse together during pregnancy. One in 700 people are born with a cleft in the UK each year – and every three minutes a baby is born with a cleft globally. \n\n\n\nSadly\, research recently carried out by Smile Train UK – in partnership with Censuswide – found that over a third (34%) of people living with a facial difference in the UK (including cleft) have been discriminated against or have heard negative comments said about them. Three in ten (30%) have also been bullied. As a result\, more than a quarter have felt self-conscious (29%)\, unhappy (28%)\, embarrassed (28%)\, unwanted (26%) – and even depressed (27%). \n\n\n\nAnd these feelings of self-consciousness don’t just impact people with a facial difference. According to Smile Train UK’s survey\, over half (53%) of the wider public are yet to fully love their smile. And sadly\, only 18% of the nation think their smile is beautiful. \n\n\n\nInterestingly\, approximately a quarter (24%) of the public surveyed said they would love their smile more if they were told it was beautiful. And for one in ten\, a greater understanding of differences and uniqueness in society would have a positive impact on the way they view their smile too. \n\n\n\nIn response to these findings\, Smile Train has launched the Beauty in Every Smile campaign\, to inspire more ‘smile inclusivity’ in the UK and to encourage people to see the beauty in their own unique smiles. \n\n\n\nSmile Train UK is championing smile inclusivity\, by encouraging more people to see the beauty in the smiles of others – as well as their own. Because there’s Beauty in Every Smile. Visit www.smiletrain.org.uk/beautyineverysmile to learn more.

SUMMARY:THE MAKE-UP
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm and DHP present… \n\n\n\nTHE MAKE-UPThursday 5 OctoberThe Dome\, 2A Dartmouth Park Hill\, Tufnell Park\, N19 5QH7pm | £25 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/q880da4b245b \n\n\n\nTHE MAKE-UP\, from Washington\, DC\, are a renowned group of revolutionary malcontents for whom the tedious rules of rock mean very little. First appearing in 1995\, The Make–Up arose like a demon of righteousness\, striking out for aesthetic correctitude\, fearless non sequitur\, communal enthusiasm\, and the sacred business of “show.” Inspired by R&B\, Gospel music\, Yeh-Yeh\, and Rock ‘n’ Roll\, The Make–Up was strange then and still strange. \n\n\n\nThey don’t jibe with the garage conservatism or the po’ faced blandness of commercial “indie rock.” They are a “band without a country.” Still\, they are sorely missed for their performances\, which were rumoured to feature: matching outfits\, Farfisa organ strikes\, secular sermonizing\, call-and-response vocals\, and calamitous guitar fuzz over a sea bed of rhythm-rubble. \n\n\n\nThe Make-Up were prolific\, toured the world\, and recorded lots of 45s and “long-playing” records before they submerged out of sight in 2001 A.D. Since then\, the group members have lectured\, healed the sick\, banged on cans\, and generally inspired in other ways\, but now come together once again to celebrate their gestalt\, their unique chemistry\, and the songs they created. They are something special. \n\n\n\n\nhttps://makeup.bandcamp.com/
