SUMMARY:Lay Down Your Burdens by Rhiannon Faith Company
DESCRIPTION:Choreographer and theatremaker Rhiannon Faith would like to invite you to step into an evening at the local pub\, but a night at the local like no other. Here you can explore the beauty of humanity and the eternal need for community and compassion\, take the weight off and help each other lighten the load and restore our weary souls. \n\n\n\nCo-commissioned by the Barbican\, London and Harlow Playhouse\, Lay Down Your Burdens is a radically tender dance theatre show that invites you into the pub to explore the beauty of humanity… \n\n\n\nTitled Lay Down Your Burdens\, the 120-minute (inc interval) show is set in a rundown but friendly and welcoming British pub\, hosted by charismatic landlady Sara who welcomes the same regulars each night\, listening to their stories and woes and serving them the same drinks. Until\, one day\, a stranger with an excess of baggage gets blown in from the cold… \n\n\n\nThe show is set on a thrust stage with the audience on three sides as guests in the pub. We meet the regulars and hear their stories as they come in and take their usual seats. In this friendly setting\, the guests (audience) are encouraged to join the conversations that go around the bar. With radical tenderness\, humour and intoxicating behaviour we can ultimately restore our weary souls\, rediscover what has been lost and lay down our collective weariness\, however tuneful that may be. \n\n\n\nInspired by the Bob Dylan song Lay Down Your Weary Tune\, music is a key element of the work. The pub setting features an original score by John Victor (of London band Ghengahr) played by live string section\, and the voices of the audience are recorded\, through unstructured and structured tasks and supported testimonials. The result is a collective weary tune\, edited live\, bespoke to each performance and place and played as the final moment of the show. \n\n\n\nWith extraordinary physical performance\, live music\, dubious karaoke and riotous pub games\, this visceral dance theatre world draws together those who have been estranged or never even dreamed they were connected. \n\n\n\nThe world premiere performances of this exciting and vital new work will be at The Pit\, Barbican 21 to 25 November 2023. \n\n\n\nRhiannon Faith explained ‘With Lay Down Your Burdens we’re seeking to create a vital sense of community for audiences and participants and to build a platform for compassion and connection. Ultimately inviting all members of the community to a place where they belong\, where they feel seen\, and where they can experience joy and togetherness\, forging happier and healthier communities by providing a catalyst for positive social change.’ \n\n\n\nIn The Guardian\, Lyndsey Winship described Rhiannon as ‘one of the few UK artists making dance theatre that is pointedly socially conscious’ . \n\n\n\nLay Down Your Burdens was grown out of conversations with communities and developed from real-life experiences of the company\, who works with psychologist Joy Griffiths to develop responses to burdens that are caring\, creative and therapeutic. The show shines a light on individual suffering and discusses personal grief and serious illness. Suitable for over 16s\, it contains strong language and scenes that some may find upsetting. \n\n\n\nIt is performed and devised by a cast of six intergenerational performers (Shelley Eva Haden\, Donald Hutera\, Dominic Coffey\, Sam Ford\, Sara Turner\, Finetta Sidgwick) and two musicians\, (India Merrett\, Anna Clock). \n\n\n\nThe company have recently become the first UK company to be invited to perform at the Wuzhen Theatre Festival in China. They will take their previous show DROWNTOWN to the annual event\, considered one of the premier festivals in China and Asia\, for three performances 23 – 25 October. \n\n\n\nRhiannon Faith Company makes radically tender dance theatre\, working nationally on big stages and locally with communities on the margins\, always with social change and care at its heart. Based in Harlow\, Essex\, with nationwide impact\, they are making bold\, ambitious moves to secure a future as global leaders in original dance theatre with a social purpose\, to champion community transformation and authentic belonging for all. The company returns to the Barbican following its poignant and critically acclaimed live and digital productions Smack That (a conversation) (2018) and Drowntown Lockdown (2020). \n\n\n\nRhiannon Faith Company has been nominated for five National Dance Awards; ‘Best Independent Company’ 2021\, 2022\, 2023\, ‘Best Digital Choreography’ 2021 (DROWNTOWN LOCKDOWN)\, ‘Best Dance Film’ 2022 (DROWNTOWN live film). In addition\, Rhiannon Faith was nominated for an AWA Women In Dance Leadership Award 2022. The company is an Associate Artist at Harlow Playhouse and an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation. https://www.rhiannonfaith.com/

SUMMARY:Monumental Cares & Creative Iconoclasm
DESCRIPTION:The practice of monuments\, historic and contemporary\, continues to generate discussion surrounding the culture of commemoration in the public sphere. From reframing existent monuments to creating counter-monuments and performative monuments\, art and culture have responded to the idea of the “monumental” through acts of recontextualization\, activism and iconoclasm. CREATURE is delighted to host a special public seminar on this subject\, featuring a launch of Dr Mechtild Widrich’s (Professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago) new book Monumental Cares: Sites of History and Contemporary Art (Manchester University Press\, 2023). The event will also feature a provocation by Dr Anna Marazuela Kim (international Curator\, Scholar and Specialist Adviser in the role of images in conflict) on the subject of creative iconoclasm. This seminar builds on CREATURE’s research series “Performance\, Monuments and Public Spaces”\, which began in 2021 with interventions by scholars and practitioners from around the world. The event is hosted by Dr Jacek Ludwig Scarso\, Deputy Director of CREATURE. \n\n\n\nBasing her intervention on her new book\, Widrich will explore how monument debates\, site specificity\, and art activism relate to problems that strike us as monumental or overwhelming\, such as war\, migration\, and the climate crisis. What does it mean today to talk about the ‘public sphere’ responsive to local needs and global constraints\, and how do current political concerns interact with history? \n\n\n\nKim’s presentation will give an historical view of the early origins of “monumental cares” in Rome of the 1500s\, when Raphael wrote the first official document concerning the importance of preserving monuments of antiquity\, against their destruction and reuse in the rebuilding of the city. With the inscription of these debates against destruction in their artworks themselves\, she argues\, Renaissance artists such as Michelangelo engaged in performative\, “creative iconoclasms”: imaginative\, prophylactic forms or critique\, as safeguard against this and the real\, physical destruction of images and statues of the Protestant Reformation. \n\n\n\nMonumental Cares. Sites of History and Contemporary Art \n\n\n\nAbstract \n\n\n\nMonumental cares rethinks monument debates\, site specificity and art activism in light of problems that strike us as monumental or overwhelming\, such as war\, migration and the climate crisis. The book shows how artists address these issues\, from Chicago and Berlin to Oslo\, Bucharest and Hong Kong\, in media ranging from marble and glass to postcards\, graffiti and re-enactment. A multidirectional theory of site does justice to specific places but also to how far-away audiences see them. What emerges is a new ethics of care in public art\, combined with a passionate engagement with reality. Familiar questions can be answered anew: what to do with monuments\, particularly when they are the products of terror and require removal\, modification or recontextualisation? And can art address the monumental concerns of our present?

SUMMARY:Kapr Code
DESCRIPTION:A documentary opera featuring the contradictory life of the ‘Czech John Cage‘\, progressive composer and prominent communist Jan Kapr (1914-88)\, a Stalin award laureate\, later banned in socialist Czechoslovakia. The film explores the nature of memory and narration\, using Kapr’s personal\, never-before-seen amateur films illustrating his humour\, inner struggles and desire to leave traces for eternity while Kapr’s music with libretto provided by Jiří Adámek illustrates the pivotal moments of his life as it moves inexorably towards his fate. Combining deep research into Kapr’s archive with a humorous libretto and playful editing this is an unusual celebration of creativity that shakes up our idea of biography. \n\n\n\nLucie Králová\, Czech Republic / Slovakia 2022\, 91′\, English subtitles \n\n\n\nWorld premiere Visions du Réel 2022The Best Czech Film at the 2022 Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival\, The Best Documentary Czech Film Critics‘  Awards 2022\n\n\n\n\nBOOK NOW\n\n\n\n\nPart of the 27th Made In Prague Festival (3rd November – 10th December 2023) organized by the Czech Centre London.

SUMMARY:Vojtěch Mašek: The Sisters Dietl + Arvéd
DESCRIPTION:A book launch and conversation with Vojtěch Mašek followed by the screening of Vojtěch Mašek’s multi-award-winning film\, Arvéd. \n\n\n\n\nA multi-layered story uncovering a kind of mysterious evil hovering above two ageing sisters. Its mood is reminiscent of Charles Burns’s Black Hole\, but more in a…Czech way. Reflex \n\n\n\n\nVojtěch Mašek\, acclaimed Czech comic book author\, screenwriter and film director discusses with Peter Kesser\, The Sisters Dietl\, the best Czech graphic novel of 2018. Described as a mix of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks and Jaroslav Dietl’s The Hospital at the Edge of the Town series\, this horror detective story follows two sisters after one is subjected to what appears to be a brutal attack. Using varied cultural references as his inspiration  and drawing on memories of childhood fears\, and the desire for a safe hiding place\, Mašek explores identity change\, doppelgängers\, hallucination and altered states of mind to build up a multi-layered story complemented by a unique multi-layered art style. \n\n\n\nVojtěch Mašek\, The Sisters Dietl\, transl. Julia and Peter Sherwood\, Centrala Books 2021 \n\n\n\nFollowed by the screening of Vojtěch Mašek’s award-winning film\, Arvéd.\n\n\n\nArvéd\n\n\n\nVojtěch Mašek\,Czech Republic\, Slovakia  2022\, 120´Cast: Michal Kern\, Saša Rašilov\, Vojtěch Vodochodský\, Jaroslav Plesl \n\n\n\nA fascinating insight into the life and mind of Jiří Arvéd Smíchovský (1898–1951)\, a charismatic hermeticist and occultist\, who in his quest for knowledge) became first a Nazi collaborator\, then informer and witness in communist show trials. He makes a Faustian pact with Plaček\, a secret police investigator whose life he saved during the war. Plaček ensures that Arvéd gets life imprisonment instead of a death sentence and offers a deal: a rare occult book for each soul delivered. Arvéd (a superb Michal Kern) plays his role in the trials even when the political tide turns. Highly stylised\, this a remarkable thriller that delves into the maze of the deteriorating mind of a man who sells his soul. \n\n\n\nBest Film\, Best Screenplay\, Best Actor Awards at Czech Film Critics Awards 2022\n\n\n\nAbout Vojtěch Mašek\n\n\n\nVojtěch Mašek (b. 1977) is a comic book author and artist\, screenwriter and playwright. His children’s book Puppet\, Plum Pit\, Plum\, Plank and Back to Puppet (2018)\, with a story by Mašek and art by Chrudoš Valoušek\, won the prestigious Bologna Ragazzi Award.
