SUMMARY:Rostro x Eminem | The Cockpit Theatre
DESCRIPTION:When classical music meets hip-hop.Rostro x Eminem is a solo performance piece — part concert\, part play — that navigates the collision between two worlds: the universe of classical music and the raw\, rebellious energy of hip-hop. \nAt its centre is Olivier\, a young man raised under the weight of his father’s dream — that he become a great cellist in the image of Mstislav Rostropovich. But Olivier hears something else calling him. \nThrough live music and storytelling\, the show traces his coming of age — the pull between inheritance and rebellion\, between who we are told to be and who we choose to become — building towards a decisive event that forces him to finally become the author of his own story. The cello is present throughout: sometimes the instrument his father demands he master\, sometimes reimagined as a weapon of his own rebellion\, put at the service of hip-hop. \nWritten\, directed and performed by Olivier van den Hende \nRunning time: 60 minutes\, no interval\nAge guidance: 14+ (strong language)\nLanguage: English \nAbout the artist\nOlivier van den Hende is a Franco-American actor\, director\, writer and classically trained cellist based in London. He trained at RADA. Screen credits include recurring roles on France Télévisions (Un si grand soleil\, L’Or Bleu) and the Cannes Official Selection film 13 jours\, 13 nuits (Pathé). He is co-founder of Le Garage\, a small theatre in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. Rostro x Eminem is his second solo show\, following L’Instinct de Mort by Jacques Mesrine (Avignon Off 2024 and La Comédie Saint-Michel\, Paris).

SUMMARY:Binary Lives - Where Fate Takes Us | The Cockpit Theatre
DESCRIPTION:A train never arrives. Time slips out of sync.\nAs the world rushes elsewhere\, two strangers\, trapped on the same station bench\, invent increasingly absurd ways to fill the empty hours. \nBlending visually poetic performance and physical theatre\, this wordless duet transforms a familiar transit space into a playground of balance\, imagination\, and human connection. \nIn this suspended dimension\, everything changes shape: glances turn into conversations\, quarrels become playful games\, and shared silences evolve into an unexpected encounter. Two parallel lives slowly interfere\, clash\, and briefly align. \nFunny\, tender\, and quietly surreal\, it turns boredom into play\, proving that sometimes the most radical journey is not moving at all. \nThe show is performed without words; drawing on a universal language\, the two performers range from physical theatre to contemporary circus\, in a poetic and ethereal atmosphere. \nThe show won the ‘Best Direction’ award at the Rome Fringe Festival and was selected for the Thessaloniki Fringe. It has been touring Italy for two years.

SUMMARY:Translation Salon: Kafkaesque (In person) | The London Library
DESCRIPTION:The London Library contains books in\, on and translated from a whole world of languages. To celebrate the incredible scope of that collection\, we are delighted to introduce our new Translation Salon\, which will explore multiple perspectives and ideas around language and the intricate art of translation. \nFor our inaugural salon\, host\, translator and translation expert Daniel Hahn will be joined by Maïa Hruska\, author of a new book\, Kafkaesque\, which tells the story of the translators who saved the work of Franz Kafka from oblivion. \nFor years after his early death\, Kafka existed almost entirely through the wildly different readings of his words by his early translators\, many of whom would later be counted amongst the greatest thinkers and writers of all time. Primo Levi translated Kafka into Italian from the German he had learned in Auschwitz; Milena Jesenská lovingly into Czech before being deported; Bruno Schulz into Polish before being shot by an SS officer; and Jorge Luis Borges into Spanish as he slowly went blind in Buenos Aires. His French translator found new humour hidden inside Kafka’s work\, while his Russian translators were condemned to perpetual anonymity by the Soviet censor. \nCome along and join the conversation about this fascinating history of Kafka’s work\, the act of translation and some of the greatest minds\, tragedies and absurdities of the twentieth century. \nIn partnership with the Jewish Literary Foundation. \nMaïa Hruska was born to a Czech-French family\, raised in Germany and now lives in London\, working as a lawyer\, like Kafka. A graduate of University of Cambridge and Kings College London\, Hruska is fluent in Czech\, French\, German\, and English. Kafkaesque is her first book. \nDaniel Hahn is a writer\, editor and translator. Books published in 2026 include If This Be Magic: the unlikely art of Shakespeare in translation\, and translations of fiction from Mexico\, Peru\, Argentina\, Guatemala\, Brazil and Chile. He is currently translating an Angolan novel and co-editing (with Padma Viswanathan) The Penguin Book of Brazilian Short Stories. \nThe Jewish Literary Foundation (JLF) presents the best in contemporary Jewish literature and ideas. From its flagship annual festival Jewish Book Week\, to its free JLF Player streaming platform\, creative opportunities and live cultural experiences\, the JLF connects\, inspires and entertains year-round. For events\, creative opportunities\, new video releases and more\, sign up to their newsletter. \nOur events programme is presented in partnership with Hakluyt & Company\, the global strategic advisory firm for businesses and investors. \nBooks by the speakers will be available to buy at the event and online from our partner bookshop Hatchards. \nNB This event will take place in person in the New Room at The London Library. Doors and the bar will open at 6.30pm\, the talk will run from 7-8pm and the bar will stay open until 8.30pm. Please see our Event Access Guidelines before you arrive. \nLondon Library events are subject to Terms & Conditions

SUMMARY:Ballerinas
DESCRIPTION:“They have two faces. The smiling\, perfect one the audience sees. And then the dark one that emerges behind the curtain\, when the rehearsed smile falls and the face contorts into a grimace because they are choking…” \nPart memoir\, part reckoning\, Ballerinas is a raw\, darkly comic exploration of the elite ballet conservatory system and the feverish atmosphere of the 1990s. Adapted from her acclaimed autobiographical novel\, performer and director Miřenka Čechová traces the often brutal journey of young girls pursuing ballet dreams\, exposing a world shaped by discipline\, ambition and sacrifice. \nBlending movement\, theatre and personal testimony\, Čechová creates a deeply intimate work that lays bare both the physical demands and psychological cost of artistic training. Revisiting past traumas with unsparing honesty and self-deprecating humour\, Ballerinas becomes not only an examination of a toxic system\, but also a powerful search for identity\, resilience and catharsis. \nThe show will be performed in English.  \nMiřenka Čechová is a Czech author\, choreographer\, director and performer whose multidisciplinary practice spans theatre\, dance and documentary storytelling. A former classical ballet dancer and co-founder of the theatre companies Spitfire Company and Tantehorse\, she has built an international reputation for creating deeply personal\, socially engaged works that transform autobiography and real-life testimony into powerful physical theatre. Her acclaimed books and performances include Miss America and Ballerinas\, the latter receiving nominations for both the European Union Prize for Literature and the Theatre Newspaper Award. \nConcept\, Direction and Performance: Miřenka Čechová\nDramaturgy: Martina Kinská\nDirectorial Collaboration: Janka Ryšánek Schmidtová\nTheatrical Collaboration: Tereza Dočkalová\nSet Design: Petr Boháč\, Eva Matoušová\nMusic: Martin Tvrdý\nLive Music: Mary C\nLighting Design: Filip Horn\nAnimation: Linda Arbanová\nVideo: Tereza Vejvodová\nCostumes and Objects: Eva Matoušová\nProduced by: Spitfire Company \nWith the support of the City of Prague. \nThis event is part of the 30th Made in Prague Festival organised by Czech Centre London.

SUMMARY:Mark Thomas: 40 In Stand Up Years
DESCRIPTION:What?! Mark Thomas been ‘standing up’ for 40 years? Impossible!! But how old does that make you…? Alas\, it is true; one of our oldest surviving alternative comics celebrates 40 years at the mic. \nSo\, here’s what he has done so far in numbers; performed comedy for 40 years\, won 8 awards for performing\, 4 for human rights work and 1 he invented for himself\, made 6 series of the Mark Thomas Comedy Product (Channel 4)\, written 6 books and 5 play scripts\, made 5 series of the Manifesto for Radio 4\, made 3 Dispatches for Channel 4\, sued the police (and won) 3 times\, curated and authored 2 art exhibitions with artist Tracey Moberly and had 1 Guinness World Record for holding 20 protests in 24 hours. \nSo basically\, expect a taster menu of government and personal mayhem\, jokes\, rants\, and a personal state-of-the-nation broadcast as he tries to turn ‘what the f*ck is going on’ into a cogent hour of stand-up.

SUMMARY:Dead [Women] Poets Séance: Sophie Herxheimer & Clare Pollard resurrect Amy Levy & Christina Rossetti (In person)
DESCRIPTION:Who are the Dead Women Poets? How dead are they? And what is our relationship to them\, as contemporary writers\, artists\, ‘queens of the whole world’? \nJoin us as we join forces with Dead [Women] Poets Society\, who\, since 2015\, have been resurrecting women and non-binary poets of the past. At The London Library – the perfect venue for resurrecting the ghosts of poets past – our spooky poet-mediums Sophie Herxheimer and Clare Pollard will commune with the spirits of Amy Levy and Christina Rossetti\, two subversive\, darkly imaginative\, outsider Victorian poets (whose friends and family once wandered the Library stacks). We’ll hear more about their lives and works\, and the influence they’ve had on our two living poets. We’ll also be treated to readings by our poet-necromancers\, haunted by the ghosts of these two dead women poets and all will be compered by poet Helen Bowell of the D[W]PS. \nThe resurrections will continue with the popular Dead [Women] Poets Society open mic\, for which we welcome poets and performers of all and no genders to the stage. The only rule: for every poem of your own\, you should also read/perform one by a dead woman or non-binary poet. \nThere’ll also be the chance to get your hands on books by our guest poets\, dead poets and D[W]PS merch. \nLearning from Dead [Women] Poets: Poetry Workshop – Clare Pollard will be teaching a poetry workshop\, inspired by dead women poets\, which will take place at the Library from 3.30-5.30pm the same day. If you book for the workshop\, you’ll receive a 65% discount on tickets for the séance. To book for both and to receive the discount\, please book through the workshop listing. \nSophie Herxheimer is an artist and poet. Her art has been shown at the National Portrait Gallery\, The Museum of Liverpool and Tate Modern. Her collection Velkom to Inklandt was a Sunday Times book of the year. 60 Lovers to Make and Do was a TLS book of the year and INDEX is a boxed deck of 78 prophetic collage poem cards. Her latest book\, Ode to Joy\, (in collaboration with film maker Sarah Gavron) combines drawing\, writing and collage to create a new type of graphic novel. \nClare Pollard’s sixth collection of poetry with Bloodaxe is Lives of the Female Poets. Her poem ‘Pollen’ was shortlisted for the Forward Prize. She translated Ovid’s Heroines for Bloodaxe\, which she toured as a one-woman show. Her play The Weather was performed at the Royal Court Theatre\, she wrote the non-fiction title Fierce Bad Rabbits: The Tales Behind Children’s Picture Books\, her adult novels are Delphi and The Modern Fairies\, which won the Tadeusz Bradecki Prize and her latest children’s novel is The Othernauts. \nHelen Bowell is a poet\, producer\, workshop facilitator and co-director of Dead [Women] Poets Society writer. Helen’s debut pamphlet The Barman was published by Bad Betty Press in 2022 and was selected as the Poetry Book Society Summer 2022 Pamphlet Choice. \nOur events programme is presented in partnership with Hakluyt & Company\, the global strategic advisory firm for businesses and investors. \nBooks by the speakers and resurrected poets will be available to buy at the event and online from our partner bookshop Hatchards. \nThis event will take place in person in the New Room at The London Library. Doors (and the bar) will open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start. Please see our Event Access Guidelines before you arrive. \nLondon Library events are subject to Terms & Conditions

SUMMARY:What Makes Great Drama Great? - Screenwriting Masterclass with Eleanor Greene (In person)
DESCRIPTION:Why do great stories make us gasp\, or catch our breath in wonder? Why does a moment of raw\, flawed humanity stop us in our tracks? And why\, even in the darkest tales\, does a flash of levity increase our enjoyment of the story? \nIn this masterclass\, led by award-winning executive producer and script editor Eleanor Greene\, we will explore the key elements of successful drama\, starting not with structure or formula\, but with something more fundamental: how we experience our favourite stories\, and why some of them stay with us forever. \nEleanor has spent her career inside the room where stories get made: developing scripts\, working with writers\, and producing drama at the highest level. In this masterclass\, she shares the framework she has developed through that experience: the essential elements that every great story needs to move an audience. \nIn the morning session we will explore these elements through the lens of existing successful shows and films\, examining why they work\, why they affect us the way they do\, and what writers do to create those effects deliberately. \nIn the afternoon we move from theory to practice\, with a series of hands-on exercises designed to improve specific aspects of your writing: how to write sharper dialogue\, how to eradicate exposition\, how to use subtext to build tension in a scene\, and how to construct a series quickly and confidently using the tools we explored from the morning’s session. \nYou will leave with a framework you can apply immediately\, and a clearer sense of the writer you want to be. \nEleanor Greene is an award-winning creative with over 25 years experience in developing\, pitching and producing scripted TV and film. A BAFTA nominated Drama Executive Producer\, Script Editor and TV fanatic she has made shows across many genres and lengths\, including sitcom\, thriller\, police procedural\, political\, historical and factual drama\, multi episodic series and features. \nThis workshop takes place in person in the New Room at the Library. Doors will open at 10.15am for a 10.30am start. Please see our Event Access Guidelines before you arrive. \nTea and coffee will be provided throughout and we will have pens and paper available but feel free to bring your own writing material. We will break for an hour for lunch and you are welcome to bring your lunch with you – there is a fridge – or there are plenty of places to buy food nearby. \nLondon Library events are subject to Terms & Conditions
