SUMMARY:NWANDO EBIZIE: WRITING THE FUTURE
DESCRIPTION:‘If suffering purifies the soul / then I’m as pure as one could hopeA beauty bordering on the obscene…’ \n\n\n\nEnter a liminal space for a sonic exploration of myth\, fairytale and archetypes. A playground of dream soundscapes\, where experimental dance meets Klezmer. \n\n\n\nThe final instalment in London Sinfonietta’s fourth series of its pioneering Writing the Future music creation scheme sees visionary multidisciplinary artist Nwando Ebizie turn the traditional concert experience on its head. This groundbreaking new work will use multi-sensory immersion to challenge your perception of reality: poetry expressed in British Sign language and passionate dance create visual music\, whilst vibrations throughout the space create a haptic experience. This multi-sensory theatrical and musical evening oscillates from romantic songs to nightmarish visions\, intimate reverie and lucid horror. \n\n\n\nThe inter-dependent music\, English text and theatrical BSL were created symbiotically to engender many different sensory points of access to the piece whilst creating a unique art-music event. \n\n\n\n‘Looking to the light\, through the dark forests\, meeting here\, beyond the crossroads’ \n\n\n\nWriting the Future offers early career music creators unique opportunities to nurture their talents and to develop a new piece in partnership with a world-class producing ensemble\, and established mentors. The current cohort of composers is Nwando Ebizie\, Alicia Jane Turner\, Luke Lewis\, and Alex Paxton. Nwando has joined forces with a number of prominent D/deaf and disabled artists including actor Sophie Stone to develop the piece. \n\n\n\nPlease note that this is an immersive event with a range of different seating options\, including benches and bean bags. If you have any access requirements\, please email info@londonsinfonietta.org.uk to discuss this with us. \n\n\n\nNwando Ebizie  Fall and then Rise on a Soft Winter’s Morning (London Sinfonietta commission\, World premiere) \n\n\n\nChisato Minamimura  dancerNat Sharp  art directorChloe Rooke  conductorLondon Sinfonietta

SUMMARY:For Data You Are\, And To Data You Shall Return / 为数据所生，亦归数据而去
DESCRIPTION:For Data You Are\, And To Data You Shall Return is an online exhibition of generative\, video and gamified works exploring diverse perspectives surrounding digital death\, renewal and reincarnation in the virtual domain. Surveying the nuance of long-standing and newer ruminations around the circularity of life and death\, in technological\, bodily\, and spiritual contexts\, the exhibition sees death as a narrative with which to discuss life. Death in the digital world is\, in a particular dimension\, describable\, observable\, and even manufacturable\, as well as manageable and repairable. Life in the digital world is\, on the contrary\, more mysterious. \n\n\n\nThe online exhibition comprises works that span a range of digital media processes and outcomes; from hypnotic encounters with concealed code to custom playful gamifications\, and planetary-scale simulations\, the exhibition presents expanded video practices\, role-playing narratives and reconnection with devices and their material origins\, drawing links between communications across ethers and the encounters of rogue or unknown agents acting on behalf of their meatspace counterparts. Decay\, sites of renewal\, and rethinking our existence in the digital and environmental domain are foregrounded. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition title is a subtle twist on the theological reference in the book of Genesis which infers non-immortality. This concept aligns with the Chinese Buddhist philosophy of “sheng-si-lun-hui\,” which is tied to the idea of karma and its role as social currency in the afterlife. By imbuing the interface with a uniquely generative background – a mystical quality of exposing the underside of codified processes – and by referring to data as the dust you shall return to\, the exhibition seeks to symbolise this continuous cycle of existence of all things. \n\n\n\nAccess the project here.

SUMMARY:Asda's Michael Bublé-Powered Christmas Tree
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate its 2023 Christmas campaign starring none other than Michael Bublé\, Asda has turned to a little Christmas magic (and a large festive helping of technology) to create a unique first-of-its-kind public Christmas tree: one where all the lights are 100% Michael Bublé-powered. People simply step up to the mic\, give the tree their best Bublé and watch it dance and dazzle with light. \n\n\n\nEndorsed by Michael Bublé himself\, Asda’s ‘karaoke’ Christmas tree has been created using state-of-the-art tech that can detect when a person is singing a Christmas hit by the Canadian superstar into the microphone and immediately triggers over 300 metres of lights to illuminate all over the tree. \n\n\n\nAnd far more sophisticated than a mere song-activated ‘on/off’ switch\, the custom-made technology uses voice recognition to detect the level of effort from a singer as well as their pitch. The more effort put in\, the more correct notes hit and the more of a show people put on\, the more the tree lights up. \n\n\n\nThe 20-foot-tall Michael Bublé-powered Christmas tree is being unveiled outside of London’s Kings Cross Station\, where it will be in place for one day only on the 16th of November\, from 10am to 7pm. Members of the public are invited to get into the festive spirit by singing live directly to the Christmas tree.

SUMMARY:The Book of Prague; A City in Short Fiction
DESCRIPTION:The winner of two Magnesia Litera Awards Marek Šindelka\, the book´s co-editor Jan Zikmund and writer Veronika Bendová will launch an anthology of short stories by the ten of city´s most famous writers\, including the illustrious Bohumil Hrabal\, that present Prague in a completely new light. Away from the Old Town Square\, these stories take us into less-visited corners of Prague: from the steep streets of the proudly edgy Žižkov neighbourhood\, to the flood-ravished suburb of Karlín\, from the tensions experienced by the city’s Romani community to the dehumanising post-war redevelopment of areas like Libeň proving that there are always sides to a city’s character you would never have imagined. SUMMARY:When you are in a dark room\, you learn to do a simple move: to push the switch and turn on the light… simple\, isn’t it?
DESCRIPTION:For some\, life is an adventure\, a beautiful or challenging one. For others\, it is a simple or complicated journey or a mountain difficult to climb\, and there are those who consider it a miracle regardless of any difficulties or conveniences that may exist.Does the thread of Ariadne\, leading us out of the labyrinth\, exist? And where do the Socratic “know thyself”\, Science\, Art and Philosophy meet our everyday lives? Is the world the way you see it? And what does “see” mean in this instance? And\, in the end… can it be something so simple as pushing the switch and turning on the light in a dark room?Join us to find the answers!Friday 17/11\, 19:15\, at the Hellenic Centre London!Free entry! \n\n\n\nBooking on 07960 797 435 or at info@omilos-eksipiretiton.gr

SUMMARY:Marius Neset: Geyser
DESCRIPTION:Our third collaboration with the saxophone virtuoso and composer \n\n\n\nLondon Sinfonietta is reunited with “marvel” Norwegian saxophone virtuoso and composer Marius Neset to perform their “elemental” third collaboration\, Geyser. Tension boils under the surface of this piece\, unleashed intermittently in ecstatic outbursts of rhythmic energy\, and echoed in the friction between Marius’ jazz quintet and the crack new music ensemble. \n\n\n\nThis third collaboration highlights Marius’ increasing affinity for the ensemble’s sound\, building on their two previous collaborations\, Snowmelt (2015) and Viaduct (2019). \n\n\n\n“With an expanded palette to play with… Neset ran riot in a spellbinding performance that ran the gamut of musical emotions and secured energetic applause and hollering\, and three curtain calls… Neset’s quintet and the London Sinfonietta meshed seamlessly\, each playing to their strengths\, creating a musical pairing that embodied the old but nevertheless valuable cliché that the whole was something more than the sum of its parts.” (London Jazz News) \n\n\n\nMarius Neset  Geyser \n\n\n\nMarius Neset  saxophonesIvo Neame  pianoJim Hart  vibraphone/marimba/percussionConor Chaplin  bass Anton Eger  drumsGeoffrey Paterson  conductorLondon Sinfonietta

SUMMARY:Il Boemo + Q&A with actor Vojtěch Dyk and director Petr Václav
DESCRIPTION:A biopic of Josef Mysliveček\, one of the most prolific opera composers in 18th century Italy\, who was admired by Mozart and forgotten by history. \n\n\n\nIt’s 1764\, and a charismatic Czech musician\, Josef Mysliveček (Vojtěch Dyk)\, arrives in Venice to fulfil his dream of becoming an opera composer. His fortune changes along with his unpronounceable name when he forms a liaison with a libertine marquise who introduces him to a hedonistic existence and high society. \n\n\n\nAs Il Boemo\, he is commissioned to write an opera for the San Carlo\, Europe’s largest theatre\, and soon becomes one of the biggest stars of the Italian opera\, working closely with legendarily volatile opera diva La Gabrielli\, writing an opera for the King of Naples and inspiring and befriending Mozart. Emphasising personal relationships\, director Petr Vaclav\, who has meticulously researched the composer\, uses flashbacks to tell Mysliveček’s extraordinary story from his ascent to glory to his death in the poverty ravaged by syphilis. \n\n\n\nPrompting comparison with Forman’s Amadeus\, this is a lavish period piece\, rich in costume and the sounds of live music recorded for the film by the Czech period ensemble Collegium 1704 with real-life opera stars. It is a must for all classic music lovers. \n\n\n\nIt premiered at the 2022 San Sebastian Film Festival. Czech Republic’s entry for the 2022 Academy Awards. \n\n\n\nPart of the 27th Made in Prague Festival\, 3rd Nov – 10th December 2023\, organized by the Czech Centre London. \n\n\n\nBOOK HERE

SUMMARY:RUTH MASCELLI + CHARLÈNE DARLING GROUPE
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nRUTH MASCELLICHARLÈNE DARLING GROUPEDISCIPLES DJsSaturday 18 NovemberThe Waiting Room\, 175 Stoke Newington High St\, London\, N16 0PE7.30pm | £8 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/tc44dce1c5c1 \n\n\n\nRUTH MASCELLI is one-quarter of the New Orleans no wave/glam/industrial group Special Interest\, providing drum machine and electronic textures to their anthemic songs. As a solo artist\, they have released a number of tapes as Psychic Hotline before making their debut under their own name with the album ‘A Night At The Baths’ on Disciples in 2021. Ruth lives and works in New Orleans\, Louisiana. \n\n\n\nThe forthcoming second solo album from Ruth Mascelli and a clear progression from the pulse-racing night-time bathhouse concept of their debut record. Non-Stop Healing Frequency is a carefully constructed sequence of electronic mood pieces\, tender ballads\, kosmische disco tracks and industrial symphonies. Synth\, piano and drum machine are layered carefully over the course of these eleven tracks\, with Mascelli’s own voice featured several times\, including a devastating version of “Lopin’ Along Thru The Cosmos” by the late\, great Judee Sill.https://ruthmascelli.bandcamp.com/album/non-stop-healing-frequency \n\n\n\nCHARLÈNE DARLING aka Charlotte Kouklia builds a self-contained musical world via French and English language vocals and a minimalist backing of guitar\, organ\, bass and drums. At times\, recalling the feminist post-punk of The Raincoats\, the avant songcraft of Brigitte Fontaine\, or the psychedelic vignettes of Cate Le Bon\, in truth Charlène Darling sounds like herself. The arrangements are playfully experimental\, dubbed-out percussion bubbling over the stripped-back instrumentation or rough tape edits disrupting lush harmonies\, but never losing sight of the earworm hooks that make these songs so addictively listenable. Step through the door and walk right in. \n\n\n\nCharlène Darling’s second album of beautifully constructed leftfield pop songs will be called ‘La Porte’ and will be released on Disciples soon. It is an exploration of misplaced desire and all-consuming romantic obsession. This performance will feature Charlène’s full live band\, the Charlène Darling Groupe.https://charlenedarling.bandcamp.com/

This recent restoration\, accompanied by newly commissioned electronic music from Dizzock & False Trance\, enhances the film’s unsettling and atmospheric qualities. \n\nBoris Orlický\, Czechoslovakia 1921 (restored in 2020)\, 59 mins.  Czech intertitles with English subtitles.Cast: Karel Lamač\, Nataša Cyganková\, Alexandr Šuvalov. \n\nAdmission: £15  (UK Jewish Film Members: 20% off)\nBOOK NOW\n\nPart of the UK Jewish Film Festival 2023\, 9th-19 November. \nPart of the 27th Made In Prague Festival (3rd November – 10th December 2023) organized by the Czech Centre London.

SUMMARY:Definitely Louise
DESCRIPTION:‘Definitely Louise’ is the debut theatre show written and performed by Heath Netherton. \n\n\n\nReceiving rave reviews upon its premiere at Frome Festival with two sold-out dates before moving onto Brighton Fringe and then a month-long run at the Gilded Balloon for Edinburgh Fringe\, Definitely Louise is coming to London at the Hope Theatre\, Islington. \n\n\n\n“Heath writes with brio and performs with a powerful combination of wit and raw emotion” \n\n\n\nSUNDAY TIMES **** \n\n\n\n“Her performance is electrifying from the first moment…Heath’s portrayal is one of extraordinary power and range…here is a person of startling talent” \n\n\n\nTHEATRE BATH \n\n\n\nDefinitely Louise explores the vulnerabilities and self-esteem issues that underlie even the most confident veneers. With a growing understanding of the true extent of undiagnosed ASD\, particularly in women\, and the masking techniques developed in order to survive\, Netherton looks at what it’s like to try to navigate a neurotypical world before you realise you’re outside of it. \n\n\n\nWhen nothing makes sense\, who do you blame? Yourself or everyone else? \n\n\n\nFrom the comfort of her flat\, an excitable\, precocious\, irrepressible woman with a dirty mouth and a lot to say\, discusses life\, her many opinions and her best friend\, all the while avoiding the advances of her over-eager neighbour. At times both funny and moving\, the piece explores themes of confidence and insecurities\, friendship and loss\, and finding your way in the modern world through a neurodiverse lens. \n\n\n\nReflecting on the experience of living with undiagnosed neurodiversity as a young woman in today’s society\, Heath Netherton explores the pressures and expectations placed on us to strive for\, want and be everything whilst not quite understanding what that is. The need to be exceptional in order to belong and the anxiety and disappointments that develop with it. \n\n\n\n“You’re supposed to be totally-f**king crazy when you’re young! Crazy\, but in a fun way” \n\n\n\nAliceis a ballsy\, no-nonsense woman ready to tear into anything and anyone she deems ‘a fucking idiot’. Through an hour she hilariously lambasts everything from detox diets and ghosting to the audition process leaving no-one safe from her acid tongue and quick put-downs. Discussing mental health\, charity work and social media she indiscriminately derides the idiocy of the very generation that she so desperately wants to be accepted by. \n\n\n\n“There’s a wit and audacity to Heath’s writing for sure\, her emotional attachment to the material is flawless” \n\n\n\nTHE STAGE \n\n\n\n“Powerful\, emotional and dramatic. Her ability to hold an audience like that is one of wonder.” \n\n\n\nSCOTSGAY **** \n\n\n\nHeath Netherton has previously been seen starring as one of the 6 wives of Henry VIII in the highly acclaimed Regina Monologues\, which won the Best Theatre award at Shaftesbury Fringe. She has also starred in the feature film The Ketamine Diaries and the upcoming Kirsty’s Promise and recently won Best Actor for the horror short Black As Before at the Pompeywood Film Festival. \n\n\n\nAdditional cast: \n\n\n\nChristopher Sherwood @C_A_Sherwood \n\n\n\nAlexandra Ricou @alexandra_ricou \n\n\n\nHope Theatre\, Islington \n\n\n\n19th and 20th November 2023 \n\n\n\nTickets: \n\n\n\nhttp://www.ticketsource.co.uk/whats-on/207-upper-street/the-hope-theatre/definitely-louise/e-jdxbgx \n\n\n\nInstagram: @hethneth \n\n\n\nTikTok: @hethneth
