SUMMARY:Strings and Things - Activities for younger children with learning difficulties
DESCRIPTION:Julia Colllar from Collars and Cuffs Co presents a suite of six sensory stories and original songs commissioned by Mainspring Arts\, together with downloadable resources to use at home. The stories are highly relevant to experiences of shielding and lockdown\, and explore contrasting concepts such as ‘near and far’ and ‘caged and free’\, using the simplest of materials found at home such as string. This is a family activity for younger children\, people with learning difficulties and people with profound and multiple disabilities.

SUMMARY:Shadowlight Artists: Luminous exhibition - Online Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Click on the website URL to enter the virtual gallery showing Luminous\, the latest exhibition by the Shadowlight Artists. The Shadowlight Artists are a group of seven artists with learning disabilities based in Oxfordshire and supported by arts charity Film Oxford: Wendy Belcher\, Tom Breach\, Mark Hemsworth\, Russell Highsmith\, Richard Hunt\, Lucy Skuce and Danny Smith. The Shadowlight Artists’ films from the exhibition will also be screened at a special event on 5 December at 3pm at the Together! 2020 Disability Film Festival where they are regular contributors. \nThe exhibition is diverse in media and subjects\, and features painting\, photography\, animation\, dance\, artist films and sculptural installation. The works explore ideas such as personal relationships with the landscape\, bullying and historical portraiture. Other work draws on a huge range of emotions from joy to sorrow\, humour to exasperation. All of the work represents honest responses to the day-to-day world from this unique group of artists. \nCommencing in late summer 2019\, Luminous has been defined by the lockdown\, as the Shadowlight Artists\, freelance professionals and Film Oxford were forced to find new and innovative ways to work collaboratively at a distance. They liaised with the artists’ family members and their support and care organisations to draw up individual plans\, so that the group’s production work could continue during the pandemic. \nThe body of work presented in the exhibition does not engage with the COVID-19 crisis directly\, but it is influenced by it due to the radically different working methods used to create the show. The enforced experiment in distanced artistic collaboration has opened up new possibilities for the future activities of the group\, offering a pathway towards artistic collaborations not limited by geographical separation\, and towards a greater potential for inclusion for Disabled artists if given sufficient resources. \nSome of the works will also be exhibited in two physical galleries in Oxford in early December\, Modern Art Oxford and Arts at the Old Fire Station\, dependent on lockdown conditions.

SUMMARY:Justin Edgar: Reasonable Adjustment exhibition - Online exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Please click on the website link to enter this Online Exhibition. In the late 1980s and early 1990s\, disabled activists named Reasonable Adjustment (RAD) fought Margaret Thatcher’s right-wing government and an oppressive medical establishment to gain rights. Regarded as terrorists by some and freedom fighters by others\, their actions included a shooting by blind activists during a live BBC TV broadcast and the bombing of Euston Underground station in protest at a lack of accessible transport. \nIn this exhibition\, Justin Edgar showcases artefacts he has collected over 30 years which document the Reasonable Adjustment movement\, including photographs he took as an art student during the height of their activity in the early 1990’s. The exhibition includes posters\, artefacts and a 1991 television documentary on Reasonable Adjustment previously thought lost\, but recently rediscovered. In the light of nine years of austerity cuts to disabled people\, some might say it’s as though RAD never happened at all. \nJustin Edgar is a Director of 104 Films and one of the UK’s leading Disabled film producers. The Reasonable Adjustment exhibition premiered in January 2020 at the Art House in Wakefield\, but the physical tour has been suspended.

SUMMARY:Making History Festival: Live Art with Gobscure and Rebecca Redican
DESCRIPTION:Live Art performance night\, featuring introductions and performances from Gobscure: Hyena in Petticoats and Rebecca Redican: Delay Six. \n\n\n\nhyena in petticoats is a defiant performance and exhibition that takes its starting point as the 18th-century writer and activist Mary Wollstonecraft\, who was erased as a ‘hyena in petticoats’. The performance is accompanied by images of the costumes and other items used within it\, together with a downloadable pamphlet with art and activities including placards to sloganise\, templates for masks of defiance\, and other creative resistance activities offering ways of remembering\, creating living memorials to ensure we are not written out of history. The exhibition will also include work previously created in response to Mary Wollstonecraft but not available online until now\, including 25 visual poems. \n\n\n\nDelay Six (an anagram of Dyslexia) is an interactive work which explores the difficulty that people with dyslexia face every time they pick up a book\, but also the beauty this can create. Rebecca and anyone who wishes to join in will make a shared piece of online live visual art which will be created before and during the performance evening. Anyone can be involved\, so if you wish to participate\, ‘like’ the Delay Six Art Facebook page to keep up to date and find out how you can take part at home. https://www.facebook.com/DelaySixArt

Adam Olha\, Jan Daňhel\, Czech Republic / Slovakia 2020\, 117´\nCast: Jan Švankmajer\, Jaromír Kallista \nThe world is divided into two unequal camps. Those who have never heard of Jan Svankmajer and know that they have come face to face with genius.\nAntony Lane\, New Yorker \nThe legendary artist\, filmmaker and surrealist\, Jan Švankmajer\, whose work has inspired artists such as Terry Gilliam and the Quay Brothers\, bid farewell to feature filmmaking in 2018 with his swan song\, Insects. While shooting the making of Insects\, directors Adam Olha\, Jan Daňhel and producer Jaromír Kallista decided to preserve Švankmajer’s unique creative process revealing the behind-the-scenes details of his artistic practice. Over three years they followed his life and work at home and abroad (including the UK premiere of Insects at the Tate Modern) creating a complex portrait\, a collage\, in which serious discussions about his artistic principles are interlaced with footage of him at work and at home including everyday and comic moments such as crashing his four-wheeler\, posing awkwardly with fans or getting irritated by organisers at an art exhibition. Talking with disarming honesty\, Jan Švankmajer\, an extremely private man\, opens up and speaks of his dreams\, meditations\, and his wife and muse Eva Švankmajerová\, revealing the difficult times after her death.\nPremiered at the 2020 Rotterdam International Film Festival. \n——– \nThe film will be available to rent (UK only) for £4.99 from 10:00 on Fri 27 Nov GMT till 10:00 on Mon 30 Nov 2020 GMT on Czech Centre Vimeo on Demand via THIS LINK.\nPRE-ORDER NOW \n*** UK PREMIERE ***\nBONUS: Q&A WITH DIRECTORS ADAM OL’HA \n——–\nPart of Made in Prague 2020 ON/OFF
