SUMMARY:The Carmen Talks: Getting the Good Stuff Out There (In person)
DESCRIPTION:Legendary publisher\, Virago\, in memory of their pioneering founder Carmen Callil\, bring their lecture series\, The Carmen Talks\, back to The London Library. \nThe third in a series of five\, this talk by Kit de Waal reflects on her own activism as a writer\, publisher and reader. She’ll discuss what she drew on from her earlier careers in social services and criminal law to bring to her writing and publishing; how it informed her about people and exclusion and about goodness. While applauding the work within publishing to make it more inclusive\, she will talk about what still needs to be done and how. She says she has never thought of herself as a rebel\, ‘more of a miner\, excavating from the bottom\, getting the good stuff out so it can see the daylight’. This generosity of spirit underpins all her work – her novels\, her memoir\, her anthologies and her work with many trusts and charities\, among them: BookBanks; the Black Writers Guild\, Raising Readers\, and her new course\, Writing Kit. \nKit de Waal was born in Birmingham to an Irish mother and a Caribbean father. Her first novel My Name is Leon was published in 2016 and shortlisted for the Costa Book Award. She has since written seven books\, including her memoir\, Without Warning and Only Sometimes\, edited Common People\, an anthology of working-class writers\, and won many awards. Her most recent novel\, longlisted for the Women’s Prize\, is The Best of Everything. \nOur events programme is presented in partnership with Hakluyt & Company\, the global strategic advisory firm for businesses and investors. \nBooks by Kit de Waal will be available to buy at the event and online from our partner bookshop Hatchards. \nThis event will take place in person at The London Library. Doors (and the bar) open at 6.30pm\, the talk will run from 7-8pm and the bar will close at 8.30pm. Tickets include a glass of wine. Please see our Event Access Guidelines before you arrive.

SUMMARY:CARLA DAL FORNO + GUESTS
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nCARLA DAL FORNO\nGUESTS\nThursday 1 October\nICA\, The Mall\, London\, SW1Y 5AH\n7.30pm | £16.50 | Tickets: https://dice.fm/event/69f1eedac3bbec0001965111 \nCARLA DAL FORNO is an Australian composer\, songwriter and producer based in Castlemaine\, Victoria. Working between post-punk minimalism\, experimental pop and atmospheric electronics\, she has built a dedicated international following through a series of acclaimed releases and extensive touring across Europe and North America. Her albums have been praised by outlets including Pitchfork\, The Quietus and Resident Advisor\, alongside airplay on BBC Radio 6 Music. Beyond her recorded work\, dal Forno hosts a monthly radio program on NTS Radio\, where she curates eclectic selections spanning experimental electronics\, dub\, post-punk and leftfield pop – offering insight into the wide-ranging influences that inform her own practice. \nShe has performed headline shows and festival appearances throughout the UK\, Europe and the United States\, including dates in London\, Berlin\, Paris and New York City\, as well as appearances at Unsound Festival and Le Guess Who? Her fourth studio album\, Confession\, expands her signature sound while maintaining the minimal\, immersive qualities that have defined her work to date. On stage\, dal Forno delivers a focused and atmospheric set that moves between brooding electronics and melodic immediacy – a performance that is both restrained and quietly powerful. \nhttps://carladalforno.bandcamp.com/ \nGUESTS is the home recording project of Jessica Higgins and Matthew Walkerdine. Vaguely named as such to avoid any problems with the poster if they pull out of a gig (which has only happened once) but also to capture a sense of reverse hospitality\, like what happens when private worlds meet each other\, making or having been made a space for. Their debut record\, “I wish I was special” (World of Echo\, 2024) was variously described as “a collage of concrète experiments and outerzone pop gestures\, music that sounds as if it’s been written from the depths of a dream”; “music for people who love music but also hate it too”. Their recently released second LP Common Domestic Bird continues in this vein\, layering synthesiser\, keyboards and samples over rudimentary drum rhythms and field recordings\, which are in turn sung or spoken with to create nine new songs. \nhttps://by-guests.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:Wind Alone\, Sand Alone — Make No Sound
DESCRIPTION:Sat 3 Oct | Stone Nest \n\nKorean and French artists create immersive sonic theatre where breath\, voice\, medieval chant\, and traditional instruments merge into a circular\, living sound world of resonance and space. \n\nThe breath\, vocalisation\, friction\, and resonance of sound artist Rémi Klemensiewicz\,haegeum player Yeji Kim\, viola d’amore player Olivier Marin\, geomungo player Eunyong Simof JAMBINAI\, medieval vocalist Christian Ploix\, and jeongga (traditional Korean vocal music) singer Yoonyoung Cho interweave. \nThis performance unfolds in the round\, immersing audiences within the evolving sonic landscape. As jeongga and medieval chant\, traditional instruments\, and ambient soundscapes seep into one another\, we surrender to a boundless world where space itself takes centre stage. Through the act of relating\, sound transforms into melody\, harmony\, and rhythm\, organizing itself into music that carries emotion. Wind Alone\, Sand Alone – Make No Sound unfolds this process of sound’s emergence\, relation\, expansion\, dissolution\, and return across multiple layers of acoustic space. It is a sonic theatre that treats music as a living entity. Here\, the hum of ventilation units\, the buzz of lighting rigs\, our shared breath\, our voices\, and our playing endlessly blur the lines between foreground and background. They appear and dissolve in harmony\, transforming the space into one living\, breathing organism. \nPresented by the Korean Cultural Centre in partnership with the Sejong Center.

SUMMARY:R.M.F.C. + THE HOBKNOBS | Upset the Rhythm
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nR.M.F.C.\nTHE HOBKNOBS\nSaturday 3 October\nThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB\n7.30pm | £15 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/ta72c863481e \nR.M.F.C. is the recording project of New South Wales’ Buz Clatworthy. Buz Clatworthy seemingly writes songs with natural born ease\, both unfussy and hyper catchy. Since 2018 R.M.F.C. have released a slew on 7”s on Anti Fade\, Total Punk and Goodbye Boozy and 2023’s debut full-length ‘Club Hits’. This album gained energy and charm from both punchy songs and subtly\, with each song moving R.M.F.C. forward\, whilst holding something memorable. \nSince then Clatworthy has continued to push himself creatively through singles\, which feels like the smart play. He is allowed the freedom to experiment and express without really having to harken back to any trace of his beginnings of automaton-inflected\, fast-paced wormy punk from his youth. Most recent 7” ‘Ecstatic Strife’ dips its mug into the punch bowl of what’s best about New Zealand’s ’80s jangle pop scene\, with Clatworthy’s assured drumming keeping it on edge. B-side ‘Golden Trick’ is a magical stunner that delves into something more meditative. It’s meditative and lush and hopefully a promise of more to come. \nhttps://rockmusicfanclub.bandcamp.com/ \nTHE HOBKNOBS debut album ‘Helmets Off’ is released this June\, by themselves and 12XU. Every word and every strum sounds like it’s placed in exactly the right moment. Perhaps it is this bareness of the songs\, that makes it feel as if The Hobknobs are speaking to the listener directly. It is clear that they don’t want anything to cloud this human interaction. Yaël Dekker\, whom you may also know as the singer of The Klittens\, and Arie van Vliet\, who used to spread his word through the band Lewsberg\, were once described as loving misanthropes. Listening to ‘Helmets Off’\, this description seems rather accurate. Dekker and Van Vliet’s voices seem to know each other well\, in a way that magnifies the songs beyond their deceptive simplicity. \nThe Hobknobs

SUMMARY:THE CLEANERS FROM VENUS + THE GARDENERS
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nTHE CLEANERS FROM VENUS\nTHE GARDENERS\nMonday 5 October\nIslington Assembly Hall\, Upper St\, London\, N1 2UD\n7pm | £18 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/eb85ea9a3f61 \nTHE CLEANERS FROM VENUS will be performing this Autumn in London. Martin Newell will be on guitar and piano\, joined by Nelson Surfquake Nice –  an original member of Cleaners back in the 80s\, and half of The Brotherhood of Lizards alongside Martin. The group will be performing some classic Cleaners songs\, with a Brotherhood of Lizards cameo-set thrown in! \nMartin Newell is a purveyor of ingenious pop music. His music is refracted from late 60s rock only shot through with invention from the rough-and-ready explosion of DIY tape releases in 80s Britain. As a songwriter\, he’s right up there with Syd Barrett and Ray Davies\, capturing a peculiar Englishness that’s very much his own. \nMartin started his career in music aged 19 when he joined an Essex glam-rock band called The Mighty Plod as a singer and gigged in rough clubs\, pubs and colleges for the next two years. In his early twenties he joined a hard rock/prog band from Ipswich called Gypp and gigged in the UK as well as touring northern Germany several times. In 1979\, he won his first record contract and shortly afterwards his first single ‘Young Jobless / Sylvie In Toytown’ was released\, first on an indie label and then with Liberty Records. In the 1980s he formed the anarchic and wonderfully offbeat Cleaners From Venus\, who after much defiance of music biz convention\, signed to a London record company and began making proper records which were well reviewed and well-received. He began co-writing songs with Captain Sensible in 1986\, a relationship which endures to some extent to this day. In 1989 he and his friend Nelson\, now of New Model Army formed The Brotherhood of Lizards\, were signed to make an album and proceeded to promote it\, touring the record by bicycle. This led to many TV appearances and some notoriety and amusement in the media. In 1993\, with XTC’s Andy Partridge in the producer’s chair Martin made what was to become his most successful album ‘The Greatest Living Englishman’\, hailed by Rolling Stone magazine as a rock classic. Over the last ten years Martin has continued to release exhilarating albums under his own name and as Cleaners from Venus\, most recently a winsome new Cleaners album called ‘K7’ was released on CD and cassette. \nA highly-entertaining live act\, Martin Newell performs infrequently\, refusing nowadays to tour at all.  He has been the subject of  a highly-praised documentary film Upstairs Planet (2019) which enjoyed premieres both in London and in New York. A second documentary The Jangling Man\, the director James Sharp’s intimate portrait of  Newell’s life and work\,  premiered in London and Los Angeles in October 2022. \nhttps://www.cleanersfromvenus.com/ \nTHE GARDENERS are a jangle-pop inspired indie rock band hailing from London and Southend On Sea. They have recently backed up Martin Newell as part of a live version of Cleaners From Venus. Check out their sublime new single ‘Round the West’ / ‘Falling from You’. \nhttps://linktr.ee/thegardenersband

SUMMARY:Nina | Battersea Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:“I’m a seagull. No\, that’s not right. I’m an actress.”\nA series of actresses audition to play Nina in The Seagull for a charismatic\, yet sinister director. His methods are unorthodox\, annihilating\, and very effective. \nIn a debut play from celebrated director Caroline Williams\, co-directed by award-\nwinning artist Deborah Pearson\, NINA questions why so many women are drawn to\nplay an actress who has everything taken away from her by men. And why do the men\nin Chekhov’s original play keep trying to turn the girls they fancy into dead seagulls? \nIn a post #MeToo era\, NINA is a meta theatrical fever dream on coercion\, power and the quest for creative expression. \n“One of the most insightful encounters I have had in a theatre.” Theatre Voices \n“If the opportunity presents itself to see Pearson’s work you must go immediately.” The Huffington Post

SUMMARY:Deep into the Sixties – David Kynaston in conversation with Samira Ahmed (In person)
DESCRIPTION:It’s the heart of the Sixties in Britain – the Beatles and the Stones vie at the top of the charts\, England win the World Cup\, and optimism and patriotism percolate through the streets. But this is not the full story of mid-Sixties Britain. Disaffection on the political left increasingly focuses on the escalating Vietnam War; and the ambitious hopes of Harold Wilson’s Labour government start to founder on the precarious state of the pound. It is a time of looking both backwards and forwards – sweeping reforms to secondary education\, huge swathes of urban redevelopment and the irresistible rise of a confident\, free-spending youth culture. Yet everyday life for many\, especially beyond the big cities\, bears a striking resemblance to decades earlier. \nLegendary historian\, David Kynaston\, discusses the latest instalment in his landmark Tales of a New Jerusalem series\, Deep Into the Sixties: Britain 1965–66\, which paints a richly nuanced picture of unrivalled detail\, revolutionising how we see post-war Britain and the so-called Swinging Sixties. He’ll be in conversation with journalist and broadcaster Samira Ahmed\, whose new BFI Film Classics book on the Beatles film A Hard Day’s Night similarly explores the shifting cultural landscape of 1960s Britain. \nDavid Kynaston has been a professional historian since 1973 and is the author of nineteen critically acclaimed books. His continuing history of postwar Britain\, Tales of a New Jerusalem\, has so far comprised Austerity Britain\, Family Britain\, Modernity Britain\, On the Cusp and A Northern Wind. He has also written several books on aspects of cricket history including the award-winning Arlott\, Swanton and the Soul of English Cricket (with Stephen Fay) and Richie Benaud’s Blue Suede Shoes (with Harry Ricketts). \nSamira Ahmed is a journalist\, writer and BBC broadcaster. She presents Front Row on BBC Radio 4\, Newswatch on BBC One\, and has made acclaimed documentaries including Art of Persia (BBC Four)\, Disgusted\, Mary Whitehouse\, and I Dressed Ziggy Stardust (BBC Radio 4). In 2020\, she was named Audio Presenter of the Year by the Broadcasting Press Guild. Her writing has appeared in The Guardian\, The Observer\, and New Humanist\, where she also writes a regular column. A Hard Day’s Night is her first book. \nOur events programme is presented in partnership with Hakluyt & Company\, the global strategic advisory firm for businesses and investors. \nBooks by both speakers will be available to buy at the event and online from our partner bookshop Hatchards. \nThis event will take place in person at The London Library. Doors (and the bar) will open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start. Please see our Event Access Guidelines before you arrive. \nLondon Library events are subject to Terms & Conditions
