SUMMARY:The Doko Challenge South
DESCRIPTION:Put yourself to the test\, Gurkha style! Take on our annual 5km Doko Challenge South. This unique event sees participants running in the footsteps of the ‘Bravest of the Brave’.  Based on a pivotal part of the Gurkha selection process\, we challenge you to take on a 5km course with a weighted Nepali Doko basket strapped to your back.   What is a Doko? A traditional Nepalese conical-shaped basket\, usually hand woven from bamboo\, fitted with shoulder straps and a ‘namlo’ (head strap) to support the load.  The baskets are used to carry a whole host of things\, from clothing to bricks!   A Historic Challenge Every British Army Gurkha Soldier will be familiar with the ‘Doko Race’.  During the renowned annual Gurkha recruitment drive\, the aspiring recruits are tasked with ascending a gruelling course in the foothills of the Himalayas carrying a ‘Doko’ loaded with 25kg of sand.  They must complete the course within 46 minutes to proceed through to the next round of selection.   Our Doko South Race Based on the traditional exercise\, we have mapped out an undulating\, cross-country course through Wimbledon Common.  On Sunday 16 June 2023\, we challenge you to complete the 5km route carrying a Doko basket weighted with 5kg\, 10kg or 15kg.  You can run\, jog\, or walk\, but those looking to push themselves can aim to beat the Gurkha recruitment time of 46 minutes\, or even the course record of 19 minutes 30 seconds!  Regardless of your time\, a coveted Doko Challenge medal and t-shirt awaits at the finish line.   Supporting Gurkha veterans and widows in Nepal Alongside keeping fit and challenging yourself\, you can take great pride in raising money to support our team in Nepal\, keeping our Gurkha veterans and widows safe and giving them the means to live with dignity.  We suggest you set a fundraising target of £150.  Your online fundraising page will be created automatically when you register\, and we will be on hand throughout to answer any queries you may have.

SUMMARY:DAISIES
DESCRIPTION:Věra Chytilová’s classic of surrealist cinema is the most adventurous and anarchic Czech movie of the 1960s. Two young women\, both named Marie\, revolt against a degenerate\, decayed and oppressive society\, attacking symbols of wealth and bourgeois culture. A riotous\, punk-poem of a film that is both hilarious and mind-warpingly innovative\, it has influenced generations of filmmakers. \n  \nScreening times: \nSunday 16 June 2024\, 7.30 pm\nThursday 20 June 2024\, 4 pm \nShown by The Garden Cinema as part of their Women Aren’t Funny season. In partnership with the Czech Centre. \nThe screening on Sunday 16 June\, will be introduced by filmmaker and lecturer Pavel Prokopic. \n  \nDefiant feminist statement? Nihilistic\, avant-garde comedy? Daisies remains a fascinating cinematic rollercoaster. Remarkable and refreshingly uncompromising\, it continues to provoke\, stimulate and entertain. \n  \nPavel Prokopic is a Czech filmmaker\, and lecturer at the University of Salford. His current work focuses on advancing cinema as a unique form of art and storytelling by combining creative experimentation\, philosophical concepts\, and cutting-edge technologies. His work has been widely published\, exhibited and presented\, including FACT in Liverpool and V&A museum in London. He holds an AHRC-funded PhD\, and a Master’s degree in Film Aesthetics from Magdalen College\, University of Oxford. \n

SUMMARY:Chromatic Journey
DESCRIPTION:Jennifer Talbot’s practise explores the parallel between the gestural energy of the Abstract Expressionist movement and the figural drama of the Baroque and mannerist period of the 15/16th century. She seeks to achieve this through interrupting the spontaneous application of the gesture by isolating it through digital interface and choreographing the composition. Importantly the energy in the gesture is retained but the spontaneity is replaced by a narrative dynamism created through considered choreography. \nWithin the paintings\, in particular of the mannerist period\, are geometric structural elements. These work to create tension and pictorial space in relation to the sensuous figures and fabrics. In her practise Jennifer references the structure by installing the work directly on the wall utilising the architectural aspects of the gallery to define the scale of the work. In some pieces edges of the wall are referenced within the composition to create tension within gestural composition. \nColour in the mannerist paintings was often bizarre\, jewel-like and high-key. Jennifer is seeking to deepen her engagement with this period by codifying the colours and using them as inspiration. Painters of this period embraced emerging technologies and colours\, an ambition she hopes to recreate in her current practise. \nChromatic Journey is part of a series of exhibitions hosted by White Noise Projects\, a group of emerging and mid-career artists who showcase meticulously chosen artworks through a series of group and solo exhibitions. \nEstablished in 2017 by mixed media artist Hanna ten Doornkaat and painter Annamarie Dzendrowskyj the collective curates exhibitions centred around themes pertinent to contemporary artistic practice\, and in response to exhibition spaces that surpass the idea of the white cube. \nChromatic Journey runs concurrently with Possible Impossibilities\, a collaborative exhibition by Hanna ten Doornkaat and Shiba Huizer.

SUMMARY:Possible Impossibilities
DESCRIPTION:Possible Impossibilities is a collaborative exhibition by German mixed media artist Hanna ten Doornkaat and Dutch photographer Shiba Huizer. With their artistic styles diverging significantly\, their collaboration illustrates the aphorism ‘opposites attract’. \nThe exhibition echoes Aristotle’s belief in the probability of impossibilities by emphasising their allure\, and by embracing the concept of likely impossibilities over improbable possibilities. \nHanna ten Doornkaat’s recent works are an exploration of unfamiliar territory\, blending the clean process of minimalism with more organic elements. She is interested in the gap between idea and reality. Her aim is to minimise emotional gestures and to reject anonymous perfection in favour of preserving her unique imprint. \nShiba Huizer is an intuitive photographer who uses subcultural references inspired by her family history in 1960s Curaçao to create a new vision of male beauty and Dutch colonial history. \nAs Huizer continues to navigate the dynamic landscape of photography\, her journey is characterised by a dedication to celebrating diversity\, challenging conventions\, and exploring the fluidity of gender and identity through her lens. \nHuizer attended the Rietveld Academie\, Amsterdam\, where she studied art and design but eventually graduated with a degree in photography. She has seven years’ experience teaching photography and digital media at the University of Amsterdam. She has exhibited widely in art galleries throughout the Netherlands\, with assignments ranging from fine art portraits to fashion editorials for a number of magazines. \nIn 2008 she moved to London to study fashion photography at the London College of Fashion (LCF). She was awarded an MA (distinction)\, and in 2011 received the MA Fashion Design and Technology Award in Media. \nPossible Impossibilities is part of a series of exhibitions hosted by White Noise Projects\, a group of emerging and mid-career artists who showcase meticulously chosen artworks through a series of group and solo exhibitions. \nPossible Impossibilities runs concurrently with Chromatic Journey\, a solo exhibition by Jennifer Talbot.

SUMMARY:Seeing Art with the Whole Body - A New Workshop Series by Claire Loussouarn
DESCRIPTION:‘Seeing art with the whole body’\, we will explore how to listen and receive an artist’s artwork\, and world with the three-dimensionality of our sensory bodies. \nFor our first workshop in this series at IMT Gallery we will have the pleasure to dialogue with Fran Hayes’ artwork. Her exhibition Thick\, Stretchy\, Sticky Space features digital paintings and video works that delve into speculative landscapes\, inspired by damaged ecologies\, science-fiction\, and the uncanny; all viewed through a profoundly human lens. \n🪩 For a glimpse of what to expect\, watch Claire’s Moving Meditation via our link in bio. \nClaire Loussouarn is a movement artist and somatic wizard. She’ll bring some of her magic to make you look at artwork from a fresh and new perspective. You will be invited to follow simple movement scores to attune to your senses\, change your perspective through space and challenge our normal default position of focused forward vision. You will learn to trust your body and its subtle felt sense in response to artwork\, letting go of preconceptions about how you should conduct yourself in an art gallery. \n🎟️ ‘Seeing Art with the Whole Body’ will take place on Tuesday 18 June at 7pm. Get your tickets via our link in bio. Tower Hamlets residents attend for FREE! \nSee you there!

SUMMARY:A Midsummer Night's Dream
DESCRIPTION:Head to a festival to celebrate a wedding\, run away for love\, get lost\, have fairies manipulate your romantic affections\, fight\, sleep\, wake up\, get married\, watch a play; all in a Midsummer Nights Dream. \nTheseus holds a Midsummer festival to celebrate his wedding to Hippolyta\, but four days of celebrations take a turn when four young lovers flee into an enchanted forest\, and the world of fairies and humans collide. As the fairy King and Queen continue to war and a group of amateur actors rehearse for their performance at the wedding reception\, it appears that the pranking Puck is the only one that knows what is real and what is magic. \nShakespeare’s captivating comedy is performed by graduating students of Bodens College of Performing Arts\, many of whom have already achieved places at London’s very best drama schools.

SUMMARY:Jupiter's Ghost
DESCRIPTION:In humanity’s future\, the connection between humans and artificial intelligence has gradually blurred into the realm of cybernetic organisms. Do any ghosts of humanity still remain? \nA scientist with a single-minded obsession will do anything to save his son Jove\, a feat he can only achieve by recreating humanity as it once was. Dr. Elias Crete is fighting a losing battle against time to save that which is most dear to him. \nJupiter’s Ghost is the debut of a new tragedy\, with some uplifting elements\, drawing on themes such as conservation\, political morality and space exploration. The costumes have been dyed by artist/lecturer Nabil Ali\, using 14th and 16th century dye recipes. \nWhen you look up at the stars tonight\, look to the west-south-west\, 39 degrees above the horizon. There lies Jupiter\, Earth’s stalwart defender against the fury of the asteroid belt. Come and immerse yourself in this tumultuous journey\, of love\, hope and identity.

SUMMARY:Women in Focus: Míla Fürstová
DESCRIPTION:Czech Centre’s Women in Focus series continues before the summer with a talk by the internationally acclaimed Czech-British artist Míla Fürstová. \nDuring her talk\, Míla will share her journey from communist Czechoslovakia to the United Kingdom\, and her professional transition to art. She will discuss the challenges she encountered during her studies and early stages of her professional artistic career\, her collaboration with Coldplay’s Chris Martin and the influence motherhood has had on her artistic work. Last but not least\, Míla will talk about her most recent exhibition projects in Czechia and her work in public spaces in London. \n  \nARTIST’S STATEMENT: \n‚My work is an intimate portrayal of the human soul explored through the medium of etching\, expressed in a distinctly female voice. \nThe content is inspired by universal and personal mythologies. The work is poetic and often narrative in its nature and reads as both contemporary and timeless. I cut\, fold and overlay my works\, often printing on glass or other transparent surfaces thus creating imagery that is multidimensional in terms of both form and meaning. \nThe feminine voice of my work is tactile and urgent\, fragile yet strong\, gentle yet enquiring. At times it floats weightlessly above the labyrinth of being a woman at other times it delves into the darkest corners of the female psyche. \nThe technique of etching uniquely reflects and informs the spirit of my work. I draw with a needle onto a plate\, allowing the image to quietly grow\, whilst a fragile silver line emerges from a dark background as if a distant memory was traced from the unconscious. The initial image undergoes metamorphosis as the alchemical process of etching progresses through each of its stages.‘\n–  Míla Fürstová \n  \nAdmission: £5 (+ Eventbrite fee) \n  \nABOUT MÍLA FÜRSTOVÁ \nOver the past decade Míla Fürstová has exhibited in over 20 solo shows in many countries including Britain\, the USA\, France and the Czech Republic. During this time she has won numerous awards and her work has featured in many international publications. Prestigious private and public collections including the Royal Collection\, the V&A and The Museum of London have acquired her work. \nBorn in Czechoslovakia\, Fürstová gained an MA degree in Art\, English Language and Psychology at the Charles University in Prague whilst simultaneously studying for her BA degree in Fine Art Printmaking at the University of Gloucestershire. In 2001\, Fürstová received her Masters degree at the Royal College of Art and has subsequently lectured at Coventry University and The University of Gloucestershire \nIn 2014 Fürstová’s work reached over 400 million people when she was commissioned to make the artwork for Coldplay’s Ghost Stories album and four singles. In 2015 the sale of her Coldplay artwork raised over £100\,000 in aid of children’s charities. \nThe largest retrospective of Míla Fürstová’s work to date is currently on show at The Museum of Easter Bohemia in Hradec Králové\, a city Míla grew up in. The Secret of Subtleties or Homecomings (Taj jemnosti aneb Návraty domů) remains open till 27 October 2024. \nMíla’s large-scale installation ‚Motherhood‘ can be found in London’s Marylebone Road\, commemorating the old Queen Charlotte’s Lying-In Hospital\, one of the first hospitals to provide medical care to unmarried women. Míla won Westminster City Council’s competition for the commission of the work. \nMíla Fürstová currently lives and works in Cheltenham. \nThe event is part of the Women in Focus series introducing inspiring female personalities and their accomplished professional journeys. Organised by Czech Centre London.
