SUMMARY:Family Fun: Yemeni Embroidery with London Craft Week
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with The Barakat Trust and as part of London Craft Week\,  join our hands-on workshop to learn how to stitch your own embroidered square inspired by the designs of a beautiful Yemeni dress. \n  \nLed by Nouria Nagi\, OBE (founder of Yemen Noor Foundation for Education and Relief)\, she will talk about the important role that embroidery plays in her country\,  Yemen. She will explain more about a special project to teach fellow women to create beautiful wall hangings and cushions inspired by forgotten designs. \nUseful information\n\nThe workshop is designed for children of primary school age\, 5-11-years-old.\nChildren must be accompanied by an adult during the workshop (please note: workshops are not drop-off).\nTo avoid disappointment\, please do not book tickets for younger children and siblings\, as they will not be able to participate. Additional family members accompanying younger siblings are welcome to enjoy our cafe and garden during the workshop.\nOur Family Fun and Young People workshops take inspiration from Leighton House\, the collections and our temporary exhibitions and include a short tour of the historic house.\nAccompanying adults (1 adult per child) come for free\, and admission to the historic house is included.\nThe session will take place in the Learning Centre at Leighton House.

Their inception was serendipitous\, emerging out of necessity when Isabel Ford\, John Brennan\, and Jeremy Van Wyck needed a name for a gig. What began as a pragmatic solution blossomed into an artistically conceived project. Embracing complete improvisation\, free expression and a truly psychedelic sound\, the group’s lineup expands for different projects and now features Kellen Maclaughlin on Guitar and Liam Murphy on Saxophone. Each member brings a diverse musical background\, having been part of various bands such as Shearing Pinx\, Plan Your Future\, Kamikaze Nurse\, Eschatons and Psychedelic Dirt. The group’s upcoming album ‘It’s Yours’ will be released on LP / digital by Upset The Rhythm this May and marks another significant leap forward.\nhttps://earthball.bandcamp.com/ \nCHRIS CORSANO is an upstate NY-based drummer who has been active at the intersections of collective improvisation\, free jazz\, avant-rock\, and noise music since the late 1990s. Corsano is one of the greatest drummers working today\, developing a percussive language of extraordinary amplitude and infinite resources. His collaborations stretch from free jazz greats (Joe McPhee\, Evan Parker\, Paul Flaherty & more) to noise mavens (Jandek\, Bill Nace\, C Spencer Yeh etc) and pop superstars (Björk). Capable of generating narrative out of permanent ecstasy\, Corsano never ceases to be profoundly affirmative and imposing of his language. Being an absolute and charismatic virtuoso\, he simultaneously is one of the most noble and generous improvisers of the few last decades. \nA move from western Massachusetts to the UK in 2005 led Corsano to develop his solo music – a dynamic\, spontaneously-composed amalgam of extended techniques for drum set and non-percussive instruments of his own making\, e.g. bowed violin strings stretched across drum heads\, modified reed instruments\, and stockpiles of resonant metal. In February 2006\, Corsano released his first solo recording\, The Young Cricketer\, and toured extensively throughout Europe\, USA\, Australia\, and Japan. In 2009\, Corsano returned focus to his own projects\, including a duo with Michael Flower\, Vampire Belt (with Bill Nace)\, Rangda (with Richard Bishop and Ben Chasny) and his solo work\, further expanded in its use of contact microphones and synthesizers. In 2017\, he received the Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artist Award. \nCorsano’s dedication to collective improvisation has led to collaborations with many kindred spirits and his appearance on over 150 records and 1000 live performances. Since arriving in Ireland\, Mohammad has used the language of music to integrate into the local community by playing at private parties and concerts. He has been playing music since the 1980’s\, while living in the city of Raqqa\, Syria  where he began working as a professional singer and started his own band\, The Al-Rabie Band which played concerts\, parties\, weddings and festivals all over Syria. His debut album ‘I Am Kurdish’ came out on Nyahh Records in February.\nhttps://nyahhrecords.bandcamp.com/album/mohammad-syfkhan-i-am-kurdish \n“Syfkhan takes his domestic influences and fuses them with music from beyond those regions\, from North African folk rhythms to Turkish psychedelia. The title track\, an original with Syfkhan’s deep\, husky voice in full flow\, is also a highlight.” The Guardian \nGOBLIN BAND\, formed organically from intimate sessions of the same name\, ran out of the Hobgoblin Music\, a folk music instrument shop in Central London\, and was organised by a group of queer folk obsessive friends and shop employees. These sessions have given rise to a six-piece band which\, though firmly rooted in the traditional music of the British Isles\, draws widely on medieval and early music\, as well as the folk musical traditions from abroad. DESCRIPTION:Internationally acclaimed jazz vocalist Grazina Pukaite originally from Lithuania\, emerged into the Irish jazz scene in 2014 before settling in London in 2018. Her influences cross genres\, but what truly sets her apart is her deep connection with traditional jazz and her unique and fearless exploration of vocal improvisation and storytelling.\n\nGrazina will present an intimate evening featuring Julian Woods on double bass\, Chris Davis on drums\, and Lior Solomons-Wise on piano. She will perform arrangements of jazz standards\, Brazilian tunes\, contemporary jazz compositions\, and some of her original songs from her recent EP ‘Small Sessions I’.\n\nLine up:\nGrazina Pukaite – Vocals\nJulian Woods – Double Bass\nChris Davis – Drums\nLior Solomons-Wise – Piano\n\nChris is a highly motivated and dedicated upcoming musician on the London scene. His passion to pursue music has already led him to several brilliant opportunities including with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra\, Brubeck Jazz Summit 2022 (USA\, Lake Tahoe\, Nevada) and where he is currently studying for a degree in jazz performance\, at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.\nChris has been studying under both UK and International class drum teachers including Eric Harland\, Ralph Salmins\, James Maddren\, Sebastiaan De Krom\, Will Glaser and others.\nOnce Chris completes his time at GSMD in 2025\, he plans to continue working in the music industry\, continuing his interests in playing for sessions\, composition (film and video games)\, and touring and playing jazz in London and the USA.\n\nJulian Woods is a bassist and guitarist based in London and studying at the Guildhall School of Music. Forgotten enchanting compositions played by leading London musicians with animated introduction by Marina Solarek will path the way into the music and lives of Ethel Smyth – an active member of the suffragettes\, Fanny Mendelssohn – more than just the sister of Felix Mendelssohn\, Henriette Bosmans – composer of jewish heritage who lived through the nazi invasion in Amsterdam\, Rebecca Clarke – one of the first female member of the Queens hall Orchestra\, the romantic german composer Emily Mayer and Germaine Tailleferre – the only female member of  the famous group of french composers named “les six”. \nIs another generation growing up not finding out about the musical magic these women? There are so many female composers who have written not only huge amounts of chamber music but also mountains of symphonic works. It was immensely difficult for women to get their works published during their lifetimes.
