SUMMARY:The Howl & The Hum
DESCRIPTION:Following the successful release of their debut album Human Contact on AWAL\, this is the breakthrough year for the euphoric folk-pop group. \nAt the heart of The How and The Hum is a strong song-writing core and an inventive\, progressive use of the guitar. Likened to Massive Attack\, Radiohead and Alt-J\, they’ve received strong press support for their wonderfully ambitious lyrics and deeply emotional vocals. \nWith their debut inspired by personal connections and shared relationships\, its fitting that they can return to the stage once more for a delayed but spell-binding celebration of this highly-regarded album.

SUMMARY:Terra Nexus
DESCRIPTION:A labyrinth of 17 interconnected artist worlds\, questioning the role of The Human As Part of Ecology. An immersive exhibition designed with social distancing. Curated by Gabriella Sonabend. \nSol Bailey-barker\, Rebecca Bellantoni\, Alice Bucknell\, Alice Cazenave\, Tom Chisholm\, Helena Doyle\, Finchittida Finch\, Hannah Fletcher\, Tom Lines\, Amanda Lwin\, Cristiano Di Martino\, Charlotte Osborne\, Andrea Phillips\, Catriona Robertson\, Wr Saunders\, Sara Trillo\, Triptych\, Food Of War (Omar Castañeda & Hernan Barros)\, Jack Warne\, Emma Jane Whitton\, Wumzum \nTerra Nexus is an immersive experience featuring 25 artists produced by Proposition Studios. It invites the audience into a multi-sensory labyrinthine of interconnected worlds to unravel a story which weaves together diverse insights into our relationship with the biosphere. \nStarting with the fundamental idea that we need to shift away from a narrative of human dominion and independence in order to protect the biosphere\, installations explore: the necessity of living soil; the perpetual migration of species; the cascading threat of impending extinctions; ways to reconnect with nature; conflict arising from depleted resources; the future of cities and how humans will live within them. From the perspectives of insects and animals\, through the eyes of scientists\, artificial intelligence\, plant life\, ancient cultures and conflicting contemporary viewpoints; Terra Nexus is a wormhole of ideas. \nWarping sensory experiences\, excavating\, weaving between co-existing timelines and suggesting alternative histories; this is the first of a series of immersive projects by Proposition Studios asking the viewer to raise their own questions about THE HUMAN AS PART OF ECOLOGY and what that means today and for future generations. \nIn preparation for this project the exhibiting artists took part in an intensive research residency\, visiting sites where human intervention has dramatically increased biodiversity while providing for human needs: Martin Crawford’s Forest Garden in Devon\, Knepp Rewilding in Sussex and Prof. Wolfe’s Wakelyns Agroforestry in Suffolk while also meeting the renowned science writer and trailblazing food campaigner Colin Tudge in Oxford. \nThese world experts who are working to regenerate landscapes and address global food problems have inspired artworks that respond to their cutting edge science\, ecological agriculture\, environmental activism and deeply researched and practical ideas.

SUMMARY:Fela Kuti's Birthday with Bukky Leo & Black Egypt Collective
DESCRIPTION:Fela’s former bandmate Bukky Leo and his Black Egypt collective honour the life and legacy of a musical icon. \nA pioneer of the afrobeat genre\, Fela gifted the world songs like ‘Beasts of No Nation’\, ‘Zombie’ and ‘Water Get No Enemy’. \nBukky himself is undoubtedly one of the most important afrobeat musicians alive today. His ‘Felabration’ show here in Camden two years ago\, paying homage to the great man’s music\, was such a hit that we felt we needed to bring Bukky back for more of the same.

SUMMARY:Arts & Crafts jewellery’s unique place in British history
DESCRIPTION:Live\, interactive online talk at Emery Walker’s House will set the scene with a snapshot of the jewellery industry in the run up to the Arts & Crafts movement\, giving context to the protagonists’ work which was responding to the social\, economic and political issues of the day. It will go on to cover the foremost features of Arts & Crafts jewellery and where it stands in the current market. \n“The Arts & Crafts movement was hugely reactionary against the trends which had been permeating the British jewellery market for decades\,” Sarah explains\, “ The resulting jewels have a unique place in the history of British jewellery with their craftsmanship taking centre stage. This talk will aim to examine the overall state of the jewellery market in the late 19th / early 20th century and the place Arts & Crafts jewellers and jewels have within it.” \nSarah is kindly supporting this series of online talks at Emery Walker’s House as she says\, “I’ve visited the Emery Walker house more than once now and every time I find it breath-taking.” \n“As a local resident\, it is such a treat to have this treasure on our doorsteps. The role the Walkers played\, along with other local residents\, in defining the Arts & Crafts movement is truly unique. For so much of their home to have been preserved unaltered for nearly a century gives us a unique gifted insight into the lives of these innovators.” as she is an admirer of by its Arts & Crafts interiors.” \n“ I love Arts and Crafts furniture and jewellery as its all about the craftsmanship. The jewellery does not come up often at auction\, but what sets it aside is it offers both an aesthetic and physical appeal\, the pieces are very tactile.” \nThe talk will cover a range of designers and makers including May Morris\, who lived at 8 Hammersmith Terrace and was good friends of the Walkers who resided next door at number 7. “I like to think she is a neighbour”\, says Sarah\, who originally hails from Florida\, but was drawn to West London by its rich artistic heritage and moved from Hammersmith to Chiswick six years ago. \nWith the new normal meaning most of us are currently communicating via the internet and visible from the neck up\, maybe this is the time to invest in a new necklace or earrings. You might even be tempted by a Victorian tiara!

SUMMARY:Executions - Opening
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\nExplore the history of public execution in London at this landmark new exhibition – opening on 16 October 2020 \n\n\n\nPublic executions were a major part of Londoners’ lives for centuries. More frequent in London than in any other town\, these morbid spectacles attracted thousands of onlookers at locations across the capital. \n\n\n\nFrom Smithfield to Southwark\, from Banqueting House to Newgate Prison\, executions became embedded in London’s landscape and people’s lives. Even today\, hints of this uncomfortable past can still be seen across the city. \n\n\n\nFrom October\, the Museum of London is bringing the lives and legacies of those who died and those who witnessed executions first hand to a major new exhibition. Executions will use a range of fascinating objects\, paintings and projections\, including the vest said to have been worn by King Charles I when he was executed\, to show how entwined this form of punishment is in the history of London. It will also reveal the rarely told human stories behind these events\, looking at the role not just royalty but all Londoners played as both spectators and participants. \n\n\n\nThis is your chance to discover how over nearly 700 years\, public executions came to shape the city we know today. \nTickets

SUMMARY:Jay Phelps Album Launch
DESCRIPTION:Prominent Canadian trumpeter and renowned band leader and educator Jay Phelps presents his fifth album Live at The Cockpit\, followed by a live performance of his high-octane headline show from last year’s London Latin Jazz Festival: Afro-Cubanismo. \nRecorded in 2018 for the first ever J to Z show for BBC 3\, it was curated at The Cockpit Theatre with help from Jez Nelson and Chris Philips and their famed ‘Jazz in the Round’ show. It’s fitting that we can now celebrate its release in person\, with the live atmosphere heard on the recording harking back to more normal times. \nJay’s relentless energy and excitement has also led to other interesting projects\, namely a Cuban-centric headline show at London Latin Jazz Festival in 2019. He’ll be re-uniting this highly-praised show to cap off an incredible evening of music.

SUMMARY:Serena Morton presents Adébayo Bolaji – Topia: a re-invention of the self
DESCRIPTION:Serena Morton is proud to present Topia\, a solo show by London-based Artist Adébayo Bolaji. \nBolaji’s work is led by his earnest curiosity\, constantly challenging his ideas before turning his questions towards the viewer. Themes such as the birth of social media\, the selfie\, Brexit\, gender debates\, climate change and celebrity presidents\, help drive this eye-catching solo show\, which consists of new works that invite the viewer to consider the many different worlds that exist in today’s contemporary society and how the need for reinvention has created hope but also unease. In addition to Bolaji’s signature colour-driven paintings\, the exhibition will premier his new film POEM 4\, which centres on a young Instagram model navigating her way through social media concepts of reality\, whilst questioning our ideas of control and identity. \nThis immersive exhibition will transform the gallery space into a secret cinema of reality where figurative painting expresses classical storytelling motifs fused with ideas from West African folklore and western theatre – all parts of Bolaji’s own past. Sigmund Freud cited play as a means of healing: it allows for the expression and reconciliation of unconscious emotions and anxieties. This is an apt metaphor for Bolaji’s paintings\, which he describes as a form of psychoanalysis: where colourful\, animated canvases unfold organically from within. \nHis fundamental process can be characterised as a liberating play\, utilising his instinctual choice of colour and his emphasis on following and trusting the line. Bolaji enjoys engaging with both ritualistic and mystical imagery; depicting struggles both internal and external between the old and new. The images act as metaphors for the conflict we all experience whilst establishing our own emotional identities. The use of the same vibrant language is a constant element narrating a different story within each painting\, each looking inward in order to comment on the external world. The artist questions if his cathartic practice can provide a therapeutic function for both himself and his audience.

SUMMARY:Loathe
DESCRIPTION:The heavy music group from Liverpool have emerged as one of the most exciting in Britain. Pioneering a creative new approach with their eclectic mix of sound and atmospheric live shows\, this must-see band will take you on a journey through metallic belters\, heartfelt melodies and back again. \nTheir second album I Let It in and It Took Everything is responsible for the recent fuss\, leading to comparisons with Deftones for their refusal to be shackled by musical boundaries. Fusing shoegazey\, ambient soundscapes with metallic crunch and hardcore they’re unlike anyone else on the scene in Britain. Many regard them as the future of UK metal\, paving the way to making heavy music mainstream again.
