SUMMARY:Life with Oscar
DESCRIPTION:In a frenetic on-stage exorcism\, actor and filmmaker Nick Cohen relives his rollercoaster journey from South London to Sunset Boulevard. A double Oscar-winner on the Academy panel invites Nick over to Los Angeles with the promise of a nomination and secret formula for a win. Nick’s descent into a Hollywood hellscape conjures ancestral trauma\, exposing a predatory world of damaged dream chasers along with metaphorical – and sometimes literal – corpses. Nick plays 31 different characters\, from predatory agents to Hollywood psychics\, including the man who modelled the Oscar trophy itself\, and a potential future bride who just happens to be the daughter of a psychotic producer. \n  \nListings information: 2 – 20 April \nArcola Theatre\, 24 Ashwin St\, London E8 3DL \nMonday – Saturday 7pm\, Saturday matinees 3pm \n£21 – 12 (preview)\, £25 – £15 (concs) Pay What You Can Tuesday\, limited allocation available in person from 6pm | www.arcolatheatre.com | 020 7503 1646

SUMMARY:The Death & Life of All of Us
DESCRIPTION:Victor Esses’ The Death & Life of All of Us sold out dates at Soho Theatre and was a hit with audiences and critics at the 2023 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. It is now set for a two-week April run at London’s Camden People’s Theatre. It is the opening show for CPT’s Spring Season and can be seen from 2-6\, April at 7.15pm and 9-13 April at 9pm. \n  \nAt 19\, whilst studying film\, Victor found his long-lost great aunt Marcelle in Rome. She had moved from Lebanon to Italy and converted from Judaism to Christianity\, changed her name and kept a secret for a lifetime. Inspired by her strength and her rebellion\, he started to make a documentary about her life. Twenty years later\, he still hasn’t finished it… \n  \nHaving grappled with her story for so long\, with the benefit of hindsight and his own maturity\, he now feels ready to do that story justice. The Death & Life of All of Us uses the interviews he recorded with Marcelle alongside art projections\, text\, live music and movement. It is a multimedia piece looking into intergenerational shame\, family secrets\, history and what’s left when we’re gone. In this moving performance\, Victor loves Marcelle but doesn’t always like her… \n  \nThe show also takes in Victor’s acceptance of his queerness\, getting past the toxic shame that is handed down to us through the generations. It incorporates stories of those who are represented in his own identity (queer\, migrant\, Jew\, Middle Eastern\, Latin American and other) yet often hidden in society. People are seen as different\, making their unique personal stories completely universal and relatable to our own lives. Esses aims to rewrite history in his own terms and encourage the audience to access their own pasts to do the same. \n  \nVictor invites the audience into his poetic\, intimate\, subtle and warm space that is absorbing and comfortable yet contains moments of gut-punching revelation. He said\, ‘I want the show to invite audiences to understand how\, in a world with so much migration\, rising antisemitism\, xenophobia and queerphobia\, we can all meet together to celebrate that we are all unique and complex\, wonderful and awful. To be human is to be multifaceted and often intersectional’. \n  \nThe Death & Life of All of Us combines intimate storytelling\, text\, Victor’s documentary footage and live music from multi-instrumentalist Enrico Aurigemma. The art installation backdrop was created by co-director and visual artist Yorgos Petrou and choreography was devised by movement director and performance artist Jennifer Jackson. \n  \nVictor Esses is a Jewish-Lebanese Latinx queer theatre-maker\, performance artist and writer. His practice centres nuanced intersectional auto/biographical stories of belonging\, resilience and intimacy\, encouraging audiences to ask questions about what makes us most human. www.victoresses.com \n  \nThe Death & Life of All of Us is supported by Arts Council England with seed commissioning by Camden People’s Theatre. Supported by The Lowry\, Shoreditch Town Hall\, Harlow Playhouse\, JW3\, Manchester Jewish Museum and Soho Theatre. \n  \nThe Death & Life of All of Us will undertake further UK dates later in 2024. \n

This will be followed up in March with ‘Engelchen’\, an album reflecting on the intrepid Cook sisters whose efforts helped refugees escape Nazi-occupied Europe in the 1930s. It’s a celebration of the human spirit\, one that reflects a universality in its narrative which transcends the boundaries of history and impacts very urgently on our daily lives. Whatever attempts may be made to tell this story\, it’s hard to imagine one that resonates deeper than ‘Engelchen’.\nhttps://alisoncotton-uk.bandcamp.com \n\n\n\nSTEREOCILIA is Bristol\, UK based guitarist and composer\, John Scott. SUMMARY:Cara Dillon - Coming Home
DESCRIPTION:In the world of music\, few luminaries shine as brightly as Cara Dillon. This Irish singer seldom fails to leave audiences spellbound with her breathtaking voice and emotional delivery and has remained at the very pinnacle of the folk genre for over two decades. \n\n\n\nIn the autumn of 2023 Cara unveiled “Coming Home” to rapt audiences\, a show featuring her first new material in over six years. Born from a collection of poems and the remarkable album that followed\, this acclaimed live production sees Cara skilfully interweave her new material with a carefully curated selection of her beloved classics. The resulting tapestry seamlessly blends storytelling\, poetry\, and song\, offering a rare and evocative glimpse into Cara’s world\, her personal memories and stories inspired by her native Co. Derry and the people\, places\, and customs she holds closest to her heart. Following the official release of the album and the publication of her book of the same name\, Cara will be bringing “Coming Home” to life once again. \n\n\n\nCara will be accompanied by an incredible band led by Sam Lakeman and featuring his sensitive arrangements\, which help to make this her most compelling live show yet—in which profound memories and emotions are unlocked in all who see it. \n\n\n\n‘Possibly the world’s most beautiful female voice’ – Mojo magazine

SUMMARY:Comedy Club 4 Kids
DESCRIPTION:Since 2005\, the Comedy Club 4 Kids has been getting the best stand-ups\, sketch acts and cabaret stars from the international circuit to do their thing for an audience of children (aged 6+) and their families… but without the rude bits! Almost 20 years later\, the company has expanded from one London residency to being countrywide\, running shows and workshops all over the UK from Peebles to Portsmouth\, even producing a book on how to write and perform stand-up\, and hosting our own Radio Nonsense podcast to bring the siillies to families all over the world. The show is family friendly\, but without any patronising idiocy. In fact\, it’s just like a normal comedy club\, but it’s on in the day\, kids are allowed in\, and thus there is a higher than usual chance of the entire audience claiming to be called Bob. \nSuitable for ages 6+. \nAdults to sit with children in their party (and help explain anything they get stuck on). \nGroup bookings to contain at least one adult for every three kids. \n  \nQUOTES: \n“A highlight for children in recent years\, giving them a taste of some of the biggest names in comedy… with the fun\, rowdy feel of a real comedy club” – The Guardian \n“An essential treat.” – Fest Magazine \n“Absolutely hilarious.” – The Yorkshire Times \n“The ethos is just right” – The Daily Telegraph \n“The perfect way to entertain the whole family.” – Three Weeks \n“All in all this show was great.” – The Scotsman \n“Comedy Club 4 Kids has stand-up sets from grown-up\, high-quality acts who perform their usual sets\, just without the swearing or rude bits.” – The Independent \n“…plenty of full on laughs and tears of enjoyment from parents” Families Edinburgh \nTickets \nGeneral £12 \nFamily Ticket £40 \n(Admits 2 adults and 2 children or 1 adult and 3 children)

SUMMARY:ANANAS
DESCRIPTION:To commemorate the 50th anniversary of opening its house and gardens to the public\, Fulham Palace unveils ANANAS\, a monumental upside-down pineapple by London artist Annie Trevorah. \nThe visually striking sculpture is inspired by the historic pinery-vinery at Fulham Palace\, a rare example of a pineapple and grape greenhouse built by Bishop Howley during his residency at the palace in the early 19th century. \nTrevorah’s particular area of interest is human-plant inter-connectivity and intra-dependence. The main sculpture’s lattice design blends in with the blooms and architecture of the walled gardens while reflecting the episcopal coat of arms. Four totems celebrating the shared characteristics of vegetables and humans complement the display as they rise above the formal planting of the knot garden section. \nThe pineapple (Ananas comosus)\, a tropical plant indigenous to South America\, was first introduced to Europe in the 17th century and has fascinated plant enthusiasts and scientists\, architects and artists ever since. Its cultivation relied on the transatlantic trade in enslaved Africans. Initially an expression of power and wealth\, it has become a symbol of friendship and cultural exchange in modern times. \nThe unveiling coincides with the ongoing exhibition The Bishops of London\, colonialism and transatlantic slavery at Fulham Palace.

SUMMARY:Czech Documentary Now: The Great Nothing
DESCRIPTION:evA feature-length documentary tragicomedy delving into the Czech response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The result is an absurdly humorous portrayal of society\, tinged with serious undertones\, yet unexpectedly lighthearted\, leaving viewers questioning the surreal reality of it all. \nVít Klusák\, Marika Pecháčková\, Czech Republic 2023\, 103´\nThe Czech Lion nomination for the Best Czech Documentary \n“It’s not about Covid\, it’s about us\,”  – Viewer \nIn the spring of 2020\, Vít Klusák (known for “Caught in the Net” and “Czech Dream”) and Marika Pecháčková embarked on a journey through the deserted streets of Prague\, documenting the nation’s two-year struggle with the global crisis and government mandates. Through poignant human narratives\, poetic reflections on the times\, surreal imagery\, and pivotal societal moments\, the filmmakers ventured into hospitals alongside doctors\, captured the fervour of anti-vaxx protesters\, witnessed athletes adapting to home training\, and followed a mezzo-soprano forced to find employment in a supermarket. With striking black-and-white cinematography\, the film refrains from imposing judgment\, allowing the raw footage to speak for itself.\nScreened as part of the Czech Centre’s Czech Documentary Now series. \nAbout the directors and the producer\nVít Klusák is a well known Czech director who with Filip Remunda shot the prize-winning film Czech Dream about a fictional supermarket in 2003. Since than he has directed many movies including Caught in the Net (2020)\, White World according to Daliborek (2017) and One Second Forever (2021) \nMarika Pecháčková studied photography and journalism before she finally realised that documentary film was the place from which she wanted to watch and understand the world. Her fundamental structures of thinking come from psychology and her personal experience with psychotherapy. Filmography: Rest Now \nPavla Klimešová is a producer based in the Czech Republic who studied film production at FAMU. She produced Caught in the Net\, an award-winning documentary by the directing duo Vít Klusák & Barbora Chalupová about child abuse online and Barbora’s next film The Law of Love about same sex marriages in Czechia. She is now developing Marika Pecháčková’s debut Runaway.

SUMMARY:Shotgunned – A New Play by Matt Anderson
DESCRIPTION:Shotgunned\, a new critically acclaimed show\, is performing at Etcetera Theatre in Camden on Friday 12th & Saturday 13th April.\n\nShotgunned tells the story of Dylan and Roz\, a couple who unexpectedly fall out of love.\n\nIt is a poignant and humorous reflection on the messy and the beautiful in relationships and how we can come up against a dead end\, no matter how much we care for each other. It also speaks about our dreams and the courage and resilience it takes to follow them. In equal parts hilarious and heart-breaking\, Shotgunned is a relatable and intimate piece of theatre about the people we lose that shape who we become.\n\nWritten and directed by Matt Anderson\, Shotgunned is Kangaroo Court’s debut theatrical production. It comes to Etcetera Theatre as part of a UK-wide tour\, performing at theatres in Exeter\, Bath\, London\, Cornwall\, Brighton\, and Edinburgh.\n\n\n‘You find yourself laughing out loud one moment and gripping for tissues the next… Shotgunned breaks your heart\, patches it together and then breaks it again.’ – FalWriting\n\n‘Despite focussing on a break up\, Shotgunned is very funny throughout.’ – ★★★★★ The Packet\n\n‘Pure Annie Hall’ – The PRSD
