SUMMARY:RAW: Uncensored Storytelling\, Art & Music
DESCRIPTION:Described as “one of the best nights out in London”\, RAW is not your typical night out – and is a status quo-shifting event format that is the first of its kind. Conceived by a woman with a penchant for collecting stories and speaking to strangers\, RAW is produced by a female-led group of badass\, good-hearts and tribe of tribes called What Does Not. \n\n\n\nIt combines vibes for miles in the coolest venues\, the serendipitous connection with incredible humans from all backgrounds\, thought-provoking art and great music. All of this is bound together by everyday people’s highs\, lows and diversity of true stories – through the lens of a theme. To top it off\, the RAW has a noble vision underpinning its sass: to move the dial on the status quo of division and disconnection. \n\n\n\nThe theme for Feb 16th is CONFESSIONS. \n\n\n\nJoin us at Shoreditch Arts Club as we explore everything from secrets and things that happen behind closed doors and sealed lips. To insights and tales never told before in a public forum\, we’ll explore sauciness and shame\, the facade before the vulnerability\, and the reconciliation that comes with disclosure. Whether CONFESSIONS means lifting a burden or the power of acknowledgement\, we’ll explore the true stories that bring the theme to life.

SUMMARY:SINGULAR VOICES: ON STAGE
DESCRIPTION:A highly entertaining evening of original comic and dramatic monologues. \n\n\n\nOur first ‘scratch night’ of the year – after the huge success of Love Bytes: Futureshock and Postcards Part 2 last year – is a highly entertaining collection of original monologues\, both comic and dramatic\, written by members of our two scriptwriting workshops\, ScriptHub Beginners and ScriptHub Advanced. SUMMARY:Czech Documentary Now: Photophobia + Q&A with director Pavol Pekarčík
DESCRIPTION:To commemorate the two-year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine\, Czech Centre screens the UK Premiere of an original documentary telling the story of a Ukrainian boy Niki who has been living inside the Kharkiv metro station since the beginning of the war. \n\n\n\nOn a cold February morning\, 12-year-old Niki and his family arrive at the Kharkiv metro station to take shelter from the terrifying war raging outside. For Niki’s family\, daylight is synonymous with mortal danger\, and the boy is not allowed to leave the station premises\, living under the constant glow of their neon lights. While aimlessly wandering around the abandoned cars and full platforms\, Niki meets Vika (11)\, and a new world opens up to him. As their bond strengthens\, the children find the courage once again to feel the sun on their faces. \n\n\n\nIvan Ostrochovský\, Pavol Pekarčík\, Slovakia\, Czech Republic\, Ukraine\, 2023\, 71′\, English subtitles \n\n\n\nUK Premiere \n\n\n\nWinner of Europa Cinemas Label Award for the best European Film at the 2023 Venice Film FestivalThe Best Czech documentary award at the 27th Ji.Hlava International Documentary Film Festival\n\n\n\nWhen we arrived in Ukraine with humanitarian aid in the spring of 2022\, and settled into a life alongside the metro refugees\, we realized that the eyes of the world would be on the front line. That was why we decided to find something most closely approaching “ordinary life” and preserve it to the best of our abilities: to find a moment of genuine humanity at a time of devastating horror. We decided to juxtapose the timeless\, aimless life lived by Niki and his family with the chilling scenes playing out on ground level\, using the format of Super 8mm film footage. We’ve filmed observations of a war-ravaged country that might seem as the distant ideas of a traumatized child – a fever dream from times long past – if only the audience did not know that this was the reality of Ukraine nowadays.” Ivan Ostrochovský\, Pavol Pekarčík \n\n\n\nThe screening commemorates the two-year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine\, a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle for peace and justice. \n\n\n\nAdmission: £5 (+Eventbrite fee)

SUMMARY:The Duchess of Padua
DESCRIPTION:Oscar Wilde’s epic tragedy of revenge and passion turned into a compact opera. An earnest young man falls for the browbeaten wife of the cruel and coercive Duke – with dreadful consequences for them all. At times melodramatic\, at times sentimental\, our adaptation of Wilde’s beautiful verse follows the twists and turns of this extraordinary Gothic drama in which the only murder is committed by a woman. With arias\, choruses\, a love-duet and a death scene\, a quartet of fine singers brings to life the first performances of this ‘Italian-style’ opera for intimate spaces.  \nBeatrice\, Duchess of Padua \nEllie Neate (soprano) \nGuido Ferranti \nAnna Elizabeth Cooper (mezzo-soprano) \nThe Duke of Padua \nJames Beddoe (tenor) \nCount Moranzone \nHenry Grant Kerswell (bass) \nDirector: Fleur Snow \nDesigner: Melissa Sofoian \n“Powered along by a dynamic\, pulsating score for piano duet\, with soaring bel canto vocals and dramatic recitatives\, there was never a dull moment to be experienced…” (Planet Hugill on Masque of Vengeance\, November 2023)

SUMMARY:THE HOMESICK + FINDOM + HOME SECRETARY
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nTHE HOMESICK\nFINDOM\nHOME SECRETARY\nThursday 22 February\nThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB\n7.30pm | £10.00 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/bf946caa252b \nTHE HOMESICK are Elias Elgersma (Vocals\, Effects)\, Jaap van der Velde (Vocals\, Effects) and Erik Woudwijk (Drums). The Homesick fuse post-punk rhythms with melodic whimsical pop into an experimental blend of great songs. The Dutch group have been around since their first EP Television from 2013 and released their debut album Youth Hunt (Subroutine) in 2017. Hailing from the backwater Frisian municipality of Dokkum\, the band enjoy exploring the extremes of their music. Their albums play with this ambiguity as they incorporate dark post-punk alongside sure-fire pop earworms. Their second album The Big Exercise (SubPop) from 2020 inverted this sound\, second-guessing their core chemistry as a live unit. Where the debut album incorporates vocals drenched in reverb\, warped synths and distorted guitars\, the Big Excercise leaves a hint of romanticism through the baroque elements such as piano\, acoustic guitar\, percussion and clarinet.\nShortly after the release of The Big Exercise they individually started to explore new musical directions. Guitar and bass were dropped as Elias and Jaap searched for other sounds playing keys\, sample boxes and more new rhythmic instruments. “We wanted to come up with something that we can dance to”\, Jaap says. “After these last two years we very much felt like this is what we need now.” The new songs are unmistakably The Homesick and at the same time like you’ve never heard them before. The third and self-titled album by The Homesick will be released now.\nhttps://thehomesick.bandcamp.com \nFINDOM know a thing about Britain’s death drive. They know that morbid fascinations of bad faith\, morose binds and slow crawls have led us here. Their debut tape (on Gob Nation) confronts the conceit of class deterioration\, clashing together energies of No Wave\, Jazz\, Dub and Goth into a work that\, through part satire and part protest\, has the hooks to fight back. We are left with five tracks self-described as anti-jazz with an overarching structure that feels like a Killing Joke inspired noir thriller\, where moments of dark aggression are sonically punctuated by open stretches of rhythmic disorientation.\nhttps://gobnation.bandcamp.com/album/pay-pig \nHOME SECRETARY are a duo from South London\, creating rickety and occasionally rhythmic non-songs that combine spoken word with improvised instrumentation. Expect to hear crude sound collage\, fumbled instruments\, and vocals whispered and proclaimed.\nhttps://homesec.bandcamp.com

SUMMARY:New Traditions
DESCRIPTION:Looking to the future with three UK premieres\n\n\n\nLondon Sinfonietta travels to the future with three UK premieres and a favourite past commission. Sky Macklay’s Microvariations will lull you into a false sense of tonality before whisking you on a whistle-stop\, microtonal tour of 19th Century European orchestras\, “a fast-forward and transcontinental sonic truncation and fantasy on” the journey of British conductor George Thomas Smart and his tuning fork in 1825. In George Lewis’ lively Tales of the Traveller\, the eponymous hero travels the limits of imagination: the piece allows a soloist total free reign to improvise against a notated ensemble part. After the interval\, Katherine Balch’s “serenade to lost or wasted time” plays a soprano soloist against four hand-held cassette tape recorders to distort and fragment our memory of the piece even as it is played\, while the programme is rounded off by Michel van der Aa’s latest commission for the ensemble\, Shades of Red\, which illustrates the different perceived properties of the colour red\, alongside a soundtrack which confronts the players with their own warped and distorted soundworld. \n\n\n\nSky Macklay  Microvariations (UK premiere)George Lewis  Tales of the TravellerKatherine Balch  Waste Knot (UK premiere)Michel van der Aa  Shades of Red (UK premiere) \n\n\n\nNina Guo  sopranoJack Sheen  conductorLondon Sinfonietta
