SUMMARY:City Lit: This Delightful Woman
DESCRIPTION:City Lit Gallery are proud to present the exhibition ‘This Delightful Woman’\, the first solo show by artist Susannah Goulding\, featuring art produced over the past 5 years following the artist’s diagnosis with incurable metastatic cancer. \n\n\n\nAboutExhibition Dates: Wednesday 28th February-Saturday 16th March\, City Lit Gallery \n\n\n\nPrivate View: Thursday 29th February\, 18:00-20:30\, City Lit Gallery \n\n\n\nArtist Talk & Poetry Reading: ‘This Delightful Woman’– Friday 8th March\, 18:30-20:30\, \n\n\n\nCity Lit (including the book launch of ‘This Delightful Woman’) \n\n\n\nSusannah Goulding’s visceral\, poignant and prolific artistic practice explores and expresses her ongoing experience of living with cancer. With honesty and authenticity\, she aims to re-address the language of cancer by opening new\, personal\, and questioning visual and textual dialogue that expresses authentic lived experience. She works directly with medical imagery\, creative records of her hospital treatments\, and the emotional\, psychological\, and embodied experience. \n\n\n\n“I explore both the experience of a liminal space\, between the disease\, its pathology and its treatment.” \n\n\n\nThe title ‘This Delightful Woman’ directly references the term of address used within the first letter from the artist’s oncologist notifying her of her diagnosis with breast cancer and frames the exhibition in relation to Susannah’s interests in the language and dialogue around those living with significant ill health. \n\n\n\nSusannah’s powerful imagery and sensitive explorations across a range of media give voice and presence to the human experience of medical care\, harnessing creative work to empower in a situation where those undergoing treatment may feel like a passive recipient of diagnoses and medical interventions. \n\n\n\n“My artistic practice is now part of my life\, the hospital and art studio work in harmony with each other\, where making and the medical merge”. \n\n\n\nIn bringing aesthetic expression and form to the often-unseen internal experience of cancer\, audiences are invited to engage\, reflect on\, feel and contribute to dialogue around a disease that touches the lives of everybody at some point in their life. \n\n\n\nWhilst the work presented is both conceptual and expressive\, it equally operates on a political level – contributing to debates and necessary changes in medical care where the patient’s voice and humanity is heard and acknowledged in the context of their treatment\, alongside acknowledgement of the painful realities of the disease. \n\n\n\nWhilst recognising the necessity of hope for those living with illness\, the artist refers to the experience of ‘pink-washing’ in the public language and representation of women’s experiences of breast cancer which she sees as a discomforting silence around cancer’s reality where those receiving treatment lack choice around confronting the far from ‘delightful’ aspects of their lived experience. \n\n\n\nFollow Susannah and her work on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/susannahgoulding/

SUMMARY:Algorithmic Unconscious
DESCRIPTION:Algorithmic Unconscious is a group exhibition by UCL BA Media students responding to arebyte’s current artistic focus on The Body\, the Mind\, the Soul\, an exploration of the complex nature of humanity in the realm of technological progress. \n\n\n\nDeveloped with curatorial and production support from arebyte team and UCL tutors\, students present new media projects that examine the impact of digital transformation on the mind\, focusing particularly on unconscious processes such as emotions\, addiction\, and dreaming. \n\n\n\nIn the non-traditional game by Aaron Wang\, anger\, fear\, joy\, and sadness provide the backdrops for quests. Emotions play a crucial role in decision-making\, yet human decisions can veer off course\, leading to addiction when addictive substances are introduced into the game. James Thom‘s installation serves as a cautionary message\, urging us not to press the button of addiction\, even though the only way to explore his work is by pressing the button repeatedly. The generated film 0714 by Ellena-Maria Kappos\, Imogen Adeoye\, Hany Radwan-Radulescu\, Cara McDerment\, and Daisy Lang – reveals how generative algorithms experience dreaming. Meanwhile\, in Dream Diary by Eric Wei\, Stephanie Lin\, and Allison Zhong\, the artists delve into the surreal landscapes of the human mind. In The Epoch’s Elegy\, Artificial Intelligence is portrayed as a malevolent force rather than a creative agent. Through this installation\, Maria Mujib envisions a future marked by environmental degradation and societal collapse as a consequence of AI’s rule. \n\n\n\nThe student’s projects unveil the impact of merging human consciousness with the digital and ethereal realm\, leaving a lasting imprint on internal thought processes\, shaping our perception\, organisation\, and expression. Their works question whether this evolution leads to increased autonomy or deeper entanglement with collective intelligence\, and if humanity’s aspirational concept of collective intelligence is being hindered by a detrimental and numbing collective algorithmic unconscious.

SUMMARY:Tim Penn and The Second Line
DESCRIPTION:Cooking up a hot gumbo of New Orleans R&B\, Tim Penn and The Second Line will take you on a magical journey through the music of the American Deep South. \n\n\n\nNo simple “covers” band\, The Second Line breathes new life into the music and mix it up further by incorporating a pinch of Ray Charles\, a growl of Tom Waits and Tim’s own songs. This recipe has led to a string of sold-out shows in London at top club venues such as Ronnie Scott’s Bar\, Pizza Express and The Green Note. \n\n\n\nLocal Teddington musician Tim Penn is one of the most in-demand pianists on the London roots\, songwriter & blues scenes. As well as leading his own band\, he also plays piano with The Cadillac Kings (“The U.K.’s finest purveyors of blues & swing” Blues in Britain Magazine)\, who played a sold-out show at The Landmark in July 2023. The line-up consists of Nigel Appleton on drums (The Guvnor’s\, Regenesis)\, Francis Booth on bass\, Ayo Odia from Nigeria (Fela Kuti\, Osibisa) adding a touch of afro-beat sax into the mix\, and Chris Proctor\, a local jam scene legend\, on guitar. \n\n\n\nIn Tim’s own words: “This is the blues\, but with a great big smile on its face”.

DESCRIPTION:‘Delulu’ is a nostalgic cringe-fest critiquing the portrayal of girls and girliness in 00s pop culture. An hour of pastel pink sketches lead down a rabbit hole of telly\, magazines and how to get hot enough for Harry Styles in 5 easy steps. \nWe ask the big questions: What happens in an advertising boardroom? SUMMARY:An Evening with Mr Fish
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an event marking the legacy of the brand that became the epitome of modern British flamboyance. \n\n\n\nAn evening celebrating Mr Fish\, the Jewish ‘boy from Wood Green’ whose extraordinary creative vision became the centre of media frenzy in the sixties. SUMMARY:THE PHEROMOANS - ‘Wyrd Psearch’ album launch
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nTHE PHEROMOANS – ‘Wyrd Psearch’ album launch\nAPOSTILLE\nDEAN RODNEY JR. & THE COWBOYS\nFLEX DJs (HP Sorcery & The Plague)\nTuesday 5 March\nCafe OTO\, 18-22 Ashwin St\, London\, E8 3DL\n7.30pm | £10 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/ed1d116c8c37 \nTHE PHEROMOANS are tenants of an unruly domain. Over the last 18 years the group have evolved from garage rock primitivists to auteurs of their own curious sound; a frothy brew of loose electronics\, refractory rock and humdrum musing. Their songs are mutable\, capricious\, unreliable narrations\, often withholding as much as they reveal. Russell Walker’s understated vocal has always been the band’s unifying focus\, it is wry\, unsparing and wilfully honest. Walker’s lyrics are an observational tour de force\, sometimes droll\, yet often tipping over into unlikely pathos. With previous releases on Upset The Rhythm\, Convulsive and Alter\, 2024 will witness The Pheromoans return with lucky album number 13\, entitled ‘Wyrd Psearch’ (out March 1st on Upset The Rhythm). \n‘Wyrd Psearch’ was recorded in Lewes throughout 2023. This was undertaken by founding member James Tranmer\, his keen instinct for how the band should sound shaping many of the creative decisions. Joined by new guitarist Henry Holmes\, the five piece doubled down on a decidedly breezy\, melodic approach. Scott Reeve’s drumming is ever brisk\, whilst Daniel Bolger explores AOR peripheries on keyboard and bass. “Wyrd Psearch finds us on relatively zestful form” affirms Walker “whether it be merrily recalling the Jason Williamson / Tim Lovejoy Covid summit\, or mentally bathing in the pleasures of lunch hours spent strapped to a listening post in Borders.” With The Pheromoans there is always a familiarity at play\, only broken and reassembled\, like a bygone sitcom gone rogue in your memory. This contributes to the group’s peculiarly British outsider perspective\, one that shouts from the sidelines\, but never goes unnoticed.\nhttps://upsettherhythm.bandcamp.com/album/wyrd-psearch \nAPOSTILLE is a man who’s torn through enough soundsystems to know the difference between gesture and meaning. Alongside running his own DIY record label Night School Records\, Glasgow native Michael Kasparis has previously made forays into the realm of hardcore punk with his groups Anxiety and The Lowest Form. Throughout all this\, his solo electronic venture Apostille has continued to evolve with each twist and turn of the world. What started off as a quest to whip up a mood and force that into a song has steadily become more of a mission in communication. The third Apostille album\, ‘Prisoners Of Love And Hate’\, is released on Night School on September 22nd.\nhttps://apostille.bandcamp.com/album/prisoners-of-love-and-hate \nDEAN RODNEY JR. is an artist and the lead singer of Dean Rodney Jr. & The Cowboys. In this latest project he puts on the golden suit and riffs about food\, jiggling body parts and more over tight disco pop. Backed by Rosie Ridgeway\, Jack Barraclough\, Tom Hirst and Robyn Steward\, you better watch out as there’s a new sheriff in town! Their debut album ‘The Yeehaw Moment’ is out now. Dean was also the frontman of The Fish Police\, has collaborated with Ravioli Me Away and during lockdown\, Dean wrote and recorded 54 albums\, describing a fictional alternative version of the present day\, Dean TV World.\nhttps://deanrodneyjrandthecowboys.bandcamp.com

SUMMARY:Keith James - The Songs of Nick Drake
DESCRIPTION:Nick Drake is the most revered and loved of all this country’s Singer-Songwriters. He has given us timeless songs that shed all the tears of life within their fragile yet perfect lines. He recorded three cherished Albums between 1969 and 1972 but was almost entirely unknown in his day. After his tragic death in 1974\, aged only 26\, his music almost disappeared into obscurity. Now\, thanks to a massive resurgence of interest and a worldwide re-evaluation of his genius\, Nick Drake has become a national treasure. \n\n\n\nTwo decades have now passed since Singer/Guitarist Keith James first paralysed the whole Country with his stunningly beautiful series of concerts. He was the first artist ever to bring this intriguingly fragile music to Theatres and Arts Venues across the UK in its pure live concert form. The result was six years of highly acclaimed performances\, amounting to over 1000 concerts in venues across the UK\, Ireland\, Holland\, France\, Italy and Spain\, including all of Nick’s Schools and Colleges – even Glastonbury Festival. \n\n\n\n‘A fresh and powerful approach to these wonderful songs’ Patrick Humphries – Nick Drake biographer \n\n\n\n‘Keith James’ Concert was truly memorable. My tears started as soon as he introduced the first song\, and I came away thinking the human spirit will not be defeated. Currently on tour across the UK. Catch him if you can. He is such a lovely human being and so talented’ The Hay Festival

SUMMARY:Areas Of Effect: Planar Systems\, Critical Roles\, and Gaming Imaginaries
DESCRIPTION:*This event has been postponed to 9 March 2024 due to train strikes\, we apologise for any inconvenience caused.*\n\nCurated by artist David Blandy and writer Jamie Sutcliffe in association with Strange Attractor Press\, Areas Of Effect: Planar Systems\, Critical Roles\, and Gaming Imaginaries is a one-day symposium on Tabletop Role Playing Games (TTRPGs) with live game sessions.\n\n\n\n\n\nForming part of arebyte’s programme The Body\, The Mind\, The Soul which questions the complex nature of humanity in the realm of technological progress\, the event brings together artists\, game designers\, theorists\, and philosophers to discuss these wildly expansive forms of play in which players utilise both their imaginations and chance mechanics (such as dice rolls) to determine the actions of fictional characters and the scenarios surrounding them.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe symposium looks at TTRPGs as the physical interface between the body and the imaginary\, addressing the hopes currently instilled in tabletop play to act as a transformative activity. As such\, this form of play presents novel opportunities for immersive experience\, problem solving\, moral dilemma\, but perhaps most importantly\, communal storytelling.\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers at the event include acclaimed RPG designers Emmy Allan\, Kayla Dice\, Mike Mason\, Chris McDowall\, Samuel Mui\, and Zedeck Siew\, alongside writers\, historians and theorists such as Stu Horvath\, Timothy Linward\, Mark Pilkington\, and Simon O’Sullivan.\n\n\n\n\n\nAn exhibition of TTRPGs-inspired video games by artists Kitty Clark\, Uma Breakdown\, John Powell-Jones\, Petra Szemán\, and Holly White are hosted on computers and available to play for visitors throughout the whole event.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe day culminates in live TTRPG play sessions of the games ECOMOFOS!! by artist David Blandy and SUPERZEROES by TTRPG game designer Samuel Mui\, amongst others\, inviting the audience to play with a deck of uniquely designed TTRPG playing cards.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe event features a selection of merchandise and publications from Strange Attractor Press and independent London-based bookshop Igloo Tree.\n\n\n\n\n\nRead more about the event here.\n\n\n\n\n\nSymposium programme:\n\n\n\n\n\n11 – 11:15am: INTRODUCTION TO TTRPGS by David Blandy and Jamie Sutcliffe\n\n\n\n\n\nStarting off the symposium\, Jamie and David welcome visitors\, introduce the programme for the day and touch upon the world of TTRPGS.\n\n\n\n\n\n11:15 – 11:45am: ON ROLEPLAYING GAMES by Simon O’ Sullivan\n\n\n\n\n\nArtist and theorist Simon O’Sullivan will begin the symposium with a keynote talk considering the imaginative spaces and practices of role-playing games considered a distinct form of fiction.\n\n\n\n\n\n11:45am – 1pm: BETWEEN HEXCRAWLS AND BIOSPHERES with Holly White\, Zedeck Siew\, David Blandy (chair)\n\n\n\n\n\nExploring the myriad functions of speculative ecology in role-playing environments\, addressing the creation of flora\, fauna and folklore that work to colour and complicate diverse worlds of play in a time of ecological collapse.\n\n\n\n\n\n1:40 – 3pm: FROM ODD PASTS TO GRIMDARK FUTURES with Timothy Linward\, Kayla Dice\, Chris McDowall (chair)\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom privately imagined locales to vast\, communally written mega texts\, this discussion will focus on the process and practice of worldbuilding\, interrogating the various textures of myth and fabulation\, asking to what ends our novel worlds might be put.\n\n\n\n\n\n3 – 3:25pm: MONSTERS\, ALIENS\, AND HOLES IN THE GROUND by Stu Horvath\n\n\n\n\n\nTTRPG historian and co-host of the Vintage RPG Podcast Stu Horvath introduces his landmark new book Monsters\, Aliens\, and Holes In The Ground: A Guide to Tabletop Roleplaying Games From D&D To Mothership\, published in 2023 by the MIT Press.\n\n\n\n\n\n3:35 – 5pm: NAMELESS HORRORS! CREEPING FLESH! with Mike Mason\, Emmy Allen\, Sam Mui\, Mark Pilkington\n\n\n\n\n\nFocusing on the aesthetics\, politics\, and arresting experiences of horror\, this conversation will look to various exercises in the macabre\, horrific\, and supernatural to test role-playing’s capacities for innovative storytelling\, moral quandary\, and new forms of autobiographical fiction.\n\n\n\n\n\n5:15 – 8:30pm: LIVE TTRPG PLAY with David Blandy\, Samuel Mui\n\n\n\n\n\nFollowing these insightful talks\, have a go at playing alternative TTRPGs with friends and other visitors! The games will be facilitated by TTRPG experts and game designers.\n\n\n\n\n\nThroughout the entire symposium\, a selection of TTRPG-inspired video games will be free to be played on computers in the gallery. Collaboration is central to his practice\, examining communal and personal heritage and interdependence. With research spanning multiple forms of archives\, from fandoms to the archive of the body\, historical texts to academic libraries\, archaeology and ecological theory\, twitch streams and film archives\, Blandy weaves poetic works that explore the complexities of the contemporary subject. @david_blandy_\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent made in partnership with Strange Attractor Press and Igloo Tree.
