SUMMARY:ULTRA-SUPER-NATURAL
DESCRIPTION:The multimedia project entitled ULTRA-SUPER-NATURAL is an exhibition as an organism\, composed of films\, animations\, photographs\, drawings by BARBORA ŠLAPETOVÁ and sculptures by LUKÁŠ RITTSTEIN. The show includes accompanying books of the same name. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition is a result of a joint project by Czech artists Barbora Šlapetová and Lukáš Rittstein\, who first travelled to Papua New Guinea in 1997 and\, face to face with the collision of two different worlds\, decided to record\, in an artistic form\, the life of some of the local people. Over the last twenty-five years\, the pair returned to the same area of Papua over a dozen times to investigate the leap in time of prehistoric people into the 21st century. As artists\, they intended to record both the visible and the invisible that shapes the community of some of the last ‘natural’ people on Earth. \n\n\n\nThe result is a unique exhibition composed of Barbora’s experimental films\, animations\, photographs and drawings and Lukáš’s sculptures providing a layered testimony on the wonder of the meeting of two worlds and the very essence of human existence. \n\n\n\nAs the artists formed relations with the locals\, the Papuan chiefs shared their beliefs\, stories and experiences and expressed a desire to meet the ‘greatest Czech chief’ as well as someone who\, like their own tribal magicians\, can fly to the ‘upper level of the world’. This led to the Papuans – known around the world for their cannibalistic practices and black magic – to many unexpected experiences such as collaborating with then-Czech President Václav Havel or receiving a call from the International Space Station. In return\, the elite of the Yali Mek tribe then fulfilled an astronaut’s wish to learn their smoke-flying technique\, which allows chosen individuals to travel to Heaven through smoke… \n\n\n\nWhat could not be photographed and filmed was drawn and animated\, depicting the inner world of the Papuans as they told it. Prepare to lose yourself in the elasticity of time\, drawn into the melting pot of magic and art based on real encounters and observations. \n\n\n\nBoth artists will be present at the Private View to offer further insights. \n\n\n\nPrivate View \n\n\n\nFriday 3 November 2023\, 6 – 7.30 pmFree\, all welcome\, with complimentary drinks

SUMMARY:Matti Klein Soul Trio live at Voodoo Rooms\, Edinburgh
DESCRIPTION:Jazz\, Funk and Soul made in Berlin \nMatti Klein – wurlitzer\, rhodes bass\nLars Zander – bass clarinet\, sax\nAndré Seidel – drums \nWith his various vintage keyboards and as MD for the Brazilian soul superstar Ed Motta or with his band Mo ‘Blow\, Klein earned his reputation as one of the most interesting young groove jazz musicians on the German scene\, appearing in renowned clubs like Ronnie Scott’s in London\, the Blue Note in Tokyo\, the Highline Ballroom in New York\, as well as at international festivals such as Pori Jazz\, Jazz in Marciac and the Leverkusener Jazztage. The man in the smart hat also shared stage and studio with stars like Nils Landgren\, Jimmy Somerville\, or David T. Walker. \n“The soulful jazz mix that keyboardist Matti Klein serves with Lars Zander on saxophone and bass clarinet and drummer André Seidel\, his partner from “Mo ’Blow” times\, has addictive potential. The three musicians create a sound that sounds much more than a trio. Groove master Klein on the keys ensures the perfect dose of bass himself. With his left hand he plays a custom built Rhodes bass piano and produces a full\, warm and round sound that has it all. (…) With their passionate reminiscences of the soul-jazz era\, the three musicians received an enthusiastic response from the audience. This is mainly due to the groove\, which pours out of every pore in the music and has an extremely contagious effect.” Kerstin Rickert

SUMMARY:Inspiring Change and Driving Innovation in Safeguarding
DESCRIPTION:Get ready to be inspired and ignite innovation in safeguarding at our in-person event. \n\n\n\nInspiring Change and Driving Innovation in Safeguarding is a symposium brought to you in collaboration with Senso.Cloud and Birmingham City University as part of our ongoing Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) to mark Safer Internet Day 2024. In keeping with the theme of Safer Internet Day\, which is ‘Inspiring Change’\, the symposium will centre on the latest developments in child safeguarding technology\, especially those benefitting from linguistics\, natural language processing\, and AI. Our symposium comes at a time when: \n\nNSPCC reported an 82% rise in online grooming crimes against children from 2018 to 2023.\nAnti-Bullying Alliance reported that 1 in 5 children aged 10 to 15 years old have experienced online bullying.\nOfcom reported that in 2022\, 1/3 of children aged 8 to 15 years old saw something ‘worrying or nasty’ online.\n\nInspiring Change and Driving Innovation in Safeguarding will be a showcase of how academic and industry innovation can reduce these concerning statistics and keep children\, aged 5 to 18 in schools in the UK and beyond\, as safe as possible online. The symposium is free to attend and will take place at Birmingham City University’s STEAMhouse on 8th February 2024\, 1.00 – 4.30pm. As shown in the programme below\, the symposium will feature talks from academics\, Edtech industry representatives\, and charitable organisations at the forefront of online safeguarding. \n\n1.00pm: Welcome to Inspiring Change and Driving Innovation in Safeguarding\n1.10pm: The Challenge of Online Safeguarding\, David Wright\, UKSIC and SWGfL\n1.40pm: Insights from the Knowledge Transfer Partnership\, Dr Charlotte-Rose Kennedy\, Renato Software Ltd and Birmingham City University\n2.00-2.30pm: Coffee break (with informal networking and poster session)\n2.30pm: Online Child Sexual Grooming Discourse\, Professor Nuria Lorenzo-Dus\, Dr Craig Evans and Ruth Mullineux-Morgan\, Swansea University\n2.50pm: The Language of Children’s Online Disclosures of Abuse\, Dr Mark McGlashan\, Birmingham City University\n3.10pm: Deep Learning Approaches to Detecting Safeguarding Concerns in Schoolchildren’s Online Conversations\, Dr Emma Franklin\, independent researcher\, and Dr Tharindu Ranasinghe\, Aston University\n3.30pm-3.40pm: Coffee break\n3.40pm: Roundtable and Q&A\n4.20: Closing remarks\n\nWe hope that the symposium will be an opportunity for us all to learn and network\, and to continue to drive innovation in online safeguarding. \nPlease also note that there is an opportunity to share your posters\, banners and promotional materials at the symposium. Alongside our scheduled talks\, we welcome delegates to submit materials related to the theme of Inspiring Change and Driving Innovation in Safeguarding to be displayed throughout the day and for informal discussion during coffee breaks. Please email c.kennedy@senso.cloud if you would like to submit a poster\, display a banner\, and/or set up a table to promote your organisation. Please note that there is limited space\, so displays will be selected based on how well they fit the theme of the symposium.
