SUMMARY:Into Yonderland
DESCRIPTION:Dream-like\, colourful figures appear in theatrical and absurd scenes\, caught in an uneasy balance between the familiar and the strange\, the comedic and the uncanny. Often painted in a vibrant\, fairground colour palette\, the works invite the viewer into a world of illusion in which the more macabre aspects are revealed as the scene unfolds before the gaze. \nFor his first solo exhibition at Kristin Hjellegjerde London\, British artist Lee Simmonds presents Into Yonderland\, a playground of painting where each canvas offers a gateway into a new realm of possibility in terms of colour\, content and character.

SUMMARY:"The Desperate Journey"

SUMMARY:Turner and the Thames
DESCRIPTION:Sir David Attenborough opened this exhibition of J.M.W. Turner’s original work in January this year\, which attracted widespread publicity and resulted in the exhibition selling out until the end of April\, its original end date. But\, thanks to Tate generously extending its loan\, the exhibition of five oil sketches of the Thames can now be seen until October 31st. \nRigorous precautions have been taken to protect staff and visitors\, including limiting the number of visitors in the house to just eight at any one time which provides an enhanced\, more intimate experience. \n“Turner’s House Trust are incredibly grateful to our volunteers for working these extra hours and to the Tate for this extension of their loan\, the first Turner works to be shown in his house since 1826.” Says Ricky Pound\, House Director\, “We’ve had great feedback since reopening\, as limiting numbers has meant more space in the house for visitors to explore and this has been welcomed with enthusiasm!”\nDue to the current Covid-19 situation\, advance booking is essential. Visitors will receive a short introduction to the house in the garden and then enjoy a self-guided visit from Wednesday-Saturday: 12pm-1pm-2pm-3pm (last entrance). Exclusive guided tours for small family groups and close friends can also be arranged. Please contact housedirector@turnershouse.org for further details.

SUMMARY:Movie of the Month #5: October Double Bill: From Beneath the Earth & The Only Trees – Free Online Film Screening [MARSM Online 2020]
DESCRIPTION:This October\, we’re spoiling you with two phenomenal films from the Levant region exploring independent music from Palestine to Kurdistan. \nFrom Beneath the Earth من تحت الأرض: \nThe masterwork of British born Palestinian director Sami Alalul\, ‘From Beneath the Earth’ provides a unique showcase and insider’s perspective to the work and artistic lives of independent Palestinian musicians. \nFeaturing Maysa Daw (DAM)\, Saaleek\, Shadi Zaqtan\, Apo & the Apostles\, and Rasha Nahas\, the film amplifies the voices that have risen from the Palestinian underground\, defying stringent conditions and exploring the intersections that exist at the heart of music created by Palestinian artists within a heavily controlled space. \nThe Only Trees الأشجار الوحيدة Darên bi tenê: \nA fascinating documentary exploring the “dengbej” musical heritage of the singers\, poets and storytellers from Northern Syria’s Rojava region. Featuring a stunning scenery of poetic landscapes\, the film is interlaced with stories of Kurdish and Assyrian songs that narrate the long history of love and suffering of this semi-autonomous region. With a polyethnic population of Kurds\, Assyrians and Armenians\, witness a new generation of storytellers from Komina Filma Rojava film collective\, as they pay tribute to the men and women keeping the stories\, dance\, heritage and lives of Rojava’s people alive through their songs. \nLive link published on Facebook event page from 8pm BST / 10pm Jerusalem Time on Monday 4th October until Monday 19th October

SUMMARY:Almagul Menlibayeva || Yerbossyn Meldibekov
DESCRIPTION:For their first project in the UK\, Aspan Gallery present a duo exhibition by two of Central Asia’s most prominent contemporary artists\, Almagul Menlibayeva and Yerbossyn Meldibekov.\nThe exhibition title\, Almagul Menlibayeva: It’s Easy to Be a Line / Yerbossyn Meldibekov: It’s Difficult to Be a Point\, comes from a phrase by an important Soviet avant-garde artist Sergey Kalmykov (1891-1967): “It’s difficult to be a point – it’s easy to be a line\, as everything in our world is moving”. Kalmykov moved in the 1930s from Moscow to Almaty\, where he was able to paint his imaginary parallel universes with fantastical creatures\, far removed from the Socialist Realist constraints imposed by the Soviet State. Kalmykov was an important historical figure\, and whilst under recognised\, the fact of his existence itself had a tremendous impact on the development of the contemporary art scene in Central Asia. \nReserve en

SUMMARY:Group Exhibition: Mother Art Prize 2020
DESCRIPTION:A group show featuring twenty short-listed artists of the Mother Art Prize 2020\, the only international prize for self-identifying women and non-binary visual artists with caring responsibilities.\nParticipating Artists:\nCassie Arnold \nHelen Benigson \nViolet Costello \nEmmeline de Mooij \nChristine De Vuono \nSabba Elahi \nMichelle Hartney \nMadison Hendry \nSadie Hennessy \nKatherine Lovett \nLauren Pisano \nEileen Reynolds \nLouise Richardson \nCarly Schmitt \nHolly Stevenson \nMarta Stysiak \nKim Walker \nEmma Wilson \nCoral Woodbury \nProcreate Project presents a group exhibition featuring 19 short-listed artists of the Mother Art Prize 2020\, the only international prize for self-identifying women and non-binary visual artists with caring responsibilities. \nThis platform aims to promote and support women artists who are mothers\, as well as drive the attention of the wider public to a broad-spectrum of themes that would otherwise be overlooked and devalued\, embracing the risk necessary to achieve a sea change in the perception and normalization of women’s artistic output as part of the cultural landscape. \nEstablished and curated by Procreate Project\, this prize’s edition puts together the most exciting leaders and organisations working to tackle the gender bias and intersectional issues in the art scene. \nFeaturing artists that work across a range of media\, the works were selected among 626 entries from 45 countries and judged by Niamh Coghlan (Director\, Richard Saltoun Gallery)\, Pauline Desouza (Director\, Diversity Art Forum)\, Elvira Dyangani Tse (Director\, The Showroom)\, Eva Langret (Artistic Director\, Frieze London)\, Claire Mander (Chair of Steering Committee UK Friends\, National Museum of Women in the Arts and Director\, the CoLAB) and Frances Morris (Director\, Tate Modern). \nThe winner of this year’s edition\, announced in May 2020\, is Helen Benigson. She will have an upcoming solo show in partnership with The Showroom as part of her award. Helen is followed by Violet Costello\, recipient of the Online Award\, with an online Solo Exhibition with Richard Saltoun Gallery\, and Eileen Reynold recipient of the International Award with an upcoming residency with Procreate Project and art material sponsored by Colart. \nTheir works raise questions around the representation and construction of the body\, religious identities\, sexualities and gender\, as well as reproductive technologies. \n“Procreate Project is a vitally important space that supports and champions artists who are carers\, (m)others or parents. Procreate Project understands the elastic fragility of what it means to make and show artwork\, at the same time as having competing caring responsibilities. At this very surreal and anxious time that we are all living through\, spaces like this are extremely rare and extra special\, so I am very grateful to Procreate Project and the Mother Art Prize for existing and supporting our work.” – Helen Benigson\, Mother Art Prize 2020 Winner \nThe exhibition is co-curated by Paola Lucente (director\, Procreate Project) and Claire Mander (Chair of Steering Committee UK Friends\, National Museum of Women in the Arts and Director\, the CoLAB).

SUMMARY:The De Morgan Collection Returns to Chelsea
DESCRIPTION:The De Morgan Foundation presents its collection of husband and wife and artistic duo\, William and Evelyn De Morgan. He was a potter who established his business on Cheyne Row and went on to be the premier ceramic designer of the Victorian arts and crafts movement. Loans include the beautiful Night and Sleep (1878) by Evelyn De Morgan\, WIlliam De Morgan’s charming Parrot Tile Panels (1888 – 1904)\, a leaflet celebrating the Blue Plaque on the De Morgans home at 127 Old Church Street\, and an exhibition catalogue of Evelyn De Morgan’s 1916 exhibition at her studio.

SUMMARY:Arabian Moucharabieh
DESCRIPTION:Lawrie Shabibi present a series of recent paintings by Moroccan artist Mohamed Melehi.\nThe presentation includes eight artworks from his Moucharabieh (2020) series\, reminiscent of his bold graphic compositions from the early 1970’s\, where he produced the now-familiar wave motif in block colours\, yet now on a much grander scale. The motif of the wave is\, for Melehi\, all about movement and change. It is as much about electromagnetic radiation as it is about water\, and when vertical it becomes a flame. The Moucharabieh (2020) series strips away the waves to their bare essentials – they become all-over diagonal compositions – giving emphasis to the curved line\, hyper-graphism and a clear chromatic palette.

SUMMARY:Selah Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Excited to announce Selah will be exhibited first in my home city of Liverpool. The exhibition will be displayed on JCDecaux screens in all of the city centre’s mainline train stations from 12th – 19th October 2020. \nThe Hebrew word Selah appears throughout the Book of Psalms. Its precise meaning is mysterious\, but it is interpreted as a pause to breathe and reflect. “It has been my aim throughout the project to attempt to recreate meditative scenes\, directing my subjects to capture the highest moment of drama. \nSelah has found its foundation’s in counter reformation art. “I have been lost in the work of Ribera. His depictions of saints and religious figures\, draw their inspiration directly from Caravaggio’s tenebrism. \nThe exhibition features portraits of well known faces including Sir Patrick Stewart\, Sir Ian McKellen & Dame Judi Dench.

SUMMARY:The Fairtrade Foundation Hot Chocolate Salon
DESCRIPTION:The Fairtrade Foundation is set to unveil the world’s first secret hot chocolate salon\, hidden inside an unassuming East London newsagent this February. \nWithin the magazine racks and behind the countless snacks\, inquisitive chocolate lovers will be invited to press a secret button that will see the shop floor rotate 180 degrees and transport them to a West-African themed speakeasy-style cafe. \nCreated to support Fairtrade’s ‘She Deserves’ campaign\, Rosine’s Hot Chocolate Salon is named after a real cocoa farmer from Côte d’Ivoire – and aims to tell the true story behind our favourite chocolate bars and why cocoa farmers\, like Rosine\, deserve a fair living income. \nThree delicious hot chocolates will be on the menu – created by leading celebrity chefs\, Melissa Hemsley\, Tess Ward and Tom Hunt. Each creation is named after a real cocoa farmer from West Africa and will be priced at £1.82 – the cost of a day’s living income for a cocoa farmer. Guests of the salon will also be treated to authentic West African jazz music\, surprise appearances from celebrity ambassadors and the chance to hear the compelling stories behind the cocoa farmers. \nCocoa farmers typically work gruelling days yet earn insufficient money to provide the basics for their families or give opportunities to their children – and female cocoa farmers like Rosine carry the greatest burden. They work in the fields\, look after children\, carry water and transport the cocoa beans to market\, often with fewer rights than men. \nMillions of farmers who grow our food in the developing world aren’t being paid what they deserve and as the world cocoa price has collapsed\, farmers are now even poorer than they were before. The living income in Ivory Coast is £1.82 a day\, yet a typical farmer earns only 73p. \nFairtrade Fortnight’s She Deserves campaign aims to establish a living income for women cocoa growers in West Africa. Fairtrade standards ensure that women have a voice in the community\, are represented in decision-making and benefit from the increased value of Fairtrade sales. \nAll money raised by the salon will help make programmes such as the Women’s School of Leadership in Côte d’Ivoire possible. The project aims to empower women cocoa farmers in West Africa to become business owners\, members of farming groups and leaders in their communities.

SUMMARY:Terra Nexus
DESCRIPTION:A labyrinth of 17 interconnected artist worlds\, questioning the role of The Human As Part of Ecology. An immersive exhibition designed with social distancing. Curated by Gabriella Sonabend. \nSol Bailey-barker\, Rebecca Bellantoni\, Alice Bucknell\, Alice Cazenave\, Tom Chisholm\, Helena Doyle\, Finchittida Finch\, Hannah Fletcher\, Tom Lines\, Amanda Lwin\, Cristiano Di Martino\, Charlotte Osborne\, Andrea Phillips\, Catriona Robertson\, Wr Saunders\, Sara Trillo\, Triptych\, Food Of War (Omar Castañeda & Hernan Barros)\, Jack Warne\, Emma Jane Whitton\, Wumzum \nTerra Nexus is an immersive experience featuring 25 artists produced by Proposition Studios. It invites the audience into a multi-sensory labyrinthine of interconnected worlds to unravel a story which weaves together diverse insights into our relationship with the biosphere. \nStarting with the fundamental idea that we need to shift away from a narrative of human dominion and independence in order to protect the biosphere\, installations explore: the necessity of living soil; the perpetual migration of species; the cascading threat of impending extinctions; ways to reconnect with nature; conflict arising from depleted resources; the future of cities and how humans will live within them. From the perspectives of insects and animals\, through the eyes of scientists\, artificial intelligence\, plant life\, ancient cultures and conflicting contemporary viewpoints; Terra Nexus is a wormhole of ideas. \nWarping sensory experiences\, excavating\, weaving between co-existing timelines and suggesting alternative histories; this is the first of a series of immersive projects by Proposition Studios asking the viewer to raise their own questions about THE HUMAN AS PART OF ECOLOGY and what that means today and for future generations. \nIn preparation for this project the exhibiting artists took part in an intensive research residency\, visiting sites where human intervention has dramatically increased biodiversity while providing for human needs: Martin Crawford’s Forest Garden in Devon\, Knepp Rewilding in Sussex and Prof. Wolfe’s Wakelyns Agroforestry in Suffolk while also meeting the renowned science writer and trailblazing food campaigner Colin Tudge in Oxford. \nThese world experts who are working to regenerate landscapes and address global food problems have inspired artworks that respond to their cutting edge science\, ecological agriculture\, environmental activism and deeply researched and practical ideas.

SUMMARY:Arts & Crafts jewellery’s unique place in British history
DESCRIPTION:Live\, interactive online talk at Emery Walker’s House will set the scene with a snapshot of the jewellery industry in the run up to the Arts & Crafts movement\, giving context to the protagonists’ work which was responding to the social\, economic and political issues of the day. It will go on to cover the foremost features of Arts & Crafts jewellery and where it stands in the current market. \n“The Arts & Crafts movement was hugely reactionary against the trends which had been permeating the British jewellery market for decades\,” Sarah explains\, “ The resulting jewels have a unique place in the history of British jewellery with their craftsmanship taking centre stage. This talk will aim to examine the overall state of the jewellery market in the late 19th / early 20th century and the place Arts & Crafts jewellers and jewels have within it.” \nSarah is kindly supporting this series of online talks at Emery Walker’s House as she says\, “I’ve visited the Emery Walker house more than once now and every time I find it breath-taking.” \n“As a local resident\, it is such a treat to have this treasure on our doorsteps. The role the Walkers played\, along with other local residents\, in defining the Arts & Crafts movement is truly unique. For so much of their home to have been preserved unaltered for nearly a century gives us a unique gifted insight into the lives of these innovators.” as she is an admirer of by its Arts & Crafts interiors.” \n“ I love Arts and Crafts furniture and jewellery as its all about the craftsmanship. The jewellery does not come up often at auction\, but what sets it aside is it offers both an aesthetic and physical appeal\, the pieces are very tactile.” \nThe talk will cover a range of designers and makers including May Morris\, who lived at 8 Hammersmith Terrace and was good friends of the Walkers who resided next door at number 7. “I like to think she is a neighbour”\, says Sarah\, who originally hails from Florida\, but was drawn to West London by its rich artistic heritage and moved from Hammersmith to Chiswick six years ago. \nWith the new normal meaning most of us are currently communicating via the internet and visible from the neck up\, maybe this is the time to invest in a new necklace or earrings. You might even be tempted by a Victorian tiara!
