SUMMARY:ORIGINS 2021-22 Festival Opening
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we open the 2021-22 ORIGINS Festival with an online welcoming event\, including a performance of the short play KATHARSIS by Yvette Nolan (Algonquin\, Canada) – a digital love letter to a theatre left empty by the pandemic. \nThe 2021-22 Festival will offer an unprecedented and evolving year-long programme\, transforming digital and physical spaces into vibrant sites of creative enquiry and performance by leading Indigenous artists and thinkers. Informed by a decade of Festival activity\, ORIGINS 2021-22 arrives at a crucial moment for the planet. Covid-19 has clearly demonstrated the fragility of our way of life. Climate change\, which shares many of Covid’s causes\, poses an existential threat. #BlackLivesMatter has exposed the fundamental injustices that underpin the histories from which the globally dominant culture grew. These challenges are not only political and scientific\, but fundamentally cultural\, forming the three key themes that will lead the Festival’s journey of enquiry through the year ahead: \nCovid\nClimate Change\nColonialism \nFrom May 20\, we present a series of online literature events\, including the US Poet Laureate Joy Harjo (Mvskoke)\, novelist Stephen Graham Jones (Blackfeet\, US)\, poets Natalie Diaz (Mojave\, US)\, Liz Howard (Anishinaabe\, Canada) & Matthew James Weigel (Dënësųłinë́ & Métis\, Canada) & environmental writers Kyle Whyte (Potawatomi\, US) & Jay Griffiths (UK).\nAs the Festival evolves\, we will be moving to performance-based interventions in public spaces\, drawing powerful links between Indigenous experience\, local heritage and sustainability\, asking urgent questions while respecting the time and space needed to stop and contemplate the answers. \nWe hope you will join us to experience another way of living. \nExplore the current programme\, with more to be announced throughout the year. \nSupported by Beyond the Spectacle and the High Commission of Canada in the UK.

SUMMARY:Singing With Nightingales: Dawn Chorus
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate International Dawn Chorus Day with this long-form live broadcast of birdsong and spoken word. \nJoin The Nest Collective online from 11pm on 1st May for a spoken-word journey\, hosted by Sam Lee\, through some of the finest poems and writings celebrating the nightingale\, the wonder of birds and the natural world. \nThis long-form broadcast will then drift into pure nightingale song through the night and\, as the birds rise\, will culminate in the dawn chorus itself\, finishing at 6am on Sunday 2nd May. \nThis live broadcast will be available for free on Youtube. \nWe are delighted to announce the contributors for this broadcast include: \nCaitlin Moran • Stewart Lee • Satish Kumar • John Lewis-Stempel • Jackie Morris • Rob Da Bank • Anita Sethi • Melissa Harrison • Mark Avery • Merlin Sheldrake • David Lindo • David Rothenberg • Mya-Rose Craig • Patrick Barkham • Farhana Yamin • Mary Colwell • Genevieve Tudor • Jay Griffiths \nInternational Dawn Chorus Day is the worldwide celebration of nature’s greatest symphony. All across the world people rise early to enjoy the sound of birdsong\, ‘from rattling wrens in Rotherham to crooning cowbirds in the Caribbean’. \nEach year\, for a short period mid-April\, a few thousand nightingales fly to southern UK from Africa. They can be heard in just a small number of special locations\, taking up songful residence after dusk. The territorial males serenade loyally each night for no more than six weeks among the blackthorn and forest margins\, giving unbelievable privilege to those who know where to go. \nIn this modern age\, with biodiversity in decline and habitats being eroded\, the nightingale has become representative of all that we have to lose. It is a small\, brown\, unremarkable-looking bird\, but it possesses one of nature’s finest singing voices. The bird winters in Africa but spends April to July mating and nesting in Europe and the Middle East. The numbers visiting England have declined so sharply that it is now on the UK’s Red List of species at the greatest conservation risk.

SUMMARY:Theory in Crisis Seminar - Sara Salem\, Anticolonial Contradictions
DESCRIPTION:What is the role of critical theory today and who is it for? What kind of maps can theory provide in the context of entrenched capitalist crisis? These are some of the questions posed by this seminar series. \nIn the aftermath of various mutations of twentieth-century ‘critical theory’ (Frankfurt School\, ‘French Theory’\, etc.)\, proponents of ‘postcritique’ have argued that critical theory has ‘run out of steam’. Instead\, this seminar series starts from the premise that 21st-century crisis has also generated dynamic new ways of reconsidering these questions. A critical theory of the present is necessarily a crisis theory. \nIn this session\, Sara Salem will give a talk titled ‘Anticolonial Contradictions: Temporality\, Capital and Theory in 1950s Egypt.’ \nThis talk explores the powerful project created in the aftermath of Egypt’s decolonisation in the 1950s and 1960s through an imagined conversation between Antonio Gramsci and Frantz Fanon\, two foundational theorists of anti-capitalism and anticolonialism. Questions of decolonisation\, capitalism\, temporality\, and mastery are explored in order to excavate anticolonial politics in all of its complexity. The talk asks what the contradictions present within these projects can tell us about social theory more broadly\, as well as how we narrate\, theorise\, and remember histories of anticolonial struggle. \nSpeaker\nSara Salem is an Assistant Professor in Sociology at the London School of Economics. Her research interests include political sociology\, postcolonial studies\, Marxist theory\, and global histories of anticolonialism. Her recently published book with Cambridge University Press is titled Anticolonial Afterlives in Egypt: The Politics of Hegemony.

SUMMARY:Benin City\, Burning
DESCRIPTION:In February 1897\, British troops launched a ‘Punitive Expedition’ on the Kingdom of Benin\, swiftly and violently destroying much of Benin City and pillaging thousands of royal artworks and sacred objects. Many of the Benin Bronzes are now in the British Museum; the rest are scattered across Europe and America in private collections and museums. The Edo people have requested these artefacts back but most of the museums have staunchly refused. \nPoet Inua Ellams\, who hails from Benin City in Nigeria\, will read his poem sequence Fuck/Empire\, about one such artefact\, a tusk\, now housed at the Manchester Museum. He will then be joined by Nigerian artist Victor Ehikhamenor\, Pitt Rivers Museum Curator and author of The Brutish Museums Dan Hicks and Manchester Museum Director Esme Ward in conversation with writer and broadcaster Afua Hirsch to discuss the history\, the legacy and the thorny issue of restitution. \nIn partnership with Penned in the Margins. \n— \nVictor Ehikhamenor is an artist\, photographer\, and writer born in Edo State\, Nigeria\, whose politically motivated works are influenced by the duality of African traditional religion and the interception of Western beliefs\, memories and nostalgia. He has had numerous solo art exhibitions across the world and is a Trustee of the proposed Edo Museum of West African Art. \nInua Ellams is a Nigerian-born\, UK-based poet\, playwright and performer who has written for the Royal Shakespeare Company\, the National Theatre and the BBC. His latest play was an adaptation of Chekhov’s Three Sisters set in Nigeria\, staged at the National Theatre. The Actual his fifth poetry release\, and first full collection was published in 2020 by Penned in the Margins. \nDan Hicks is Professor of Contemporary Archaeology at the University of Oxford and Curator at the Pitt Rivers Museum. His award-winning research focuses on the restitution of African cultural heritage from Euro-American collections\, focusing on the place of ideas of cultural whiteness in ongoing histories of colonial violence. His most recent book is The Brutish Museums. \nAfua Hirsch is a writer\, broadcaster and former barrister. She is a columnist for The Guardian\, writes for magazines including VOGUE\, Time and National Geographic and her book Brit(ish): On Race\, Identity and Belonging was a Sunday Times bestseller. Her documentaries have included African Artand Enslaved and she has worked in development in West Africa and in international human rights law at the bar. \nEsme Ward is Director of Manchester Museum and the first woman to hold the role in its 125 year history. Prior to this\, she was Head of Learning Engagement at Manchester Museum and the Whitworth. Together with Manchester Literature Festival\, she commissioned Inua Ellams’ poetry sequence responding to the Benin Tusk in the Manchester’s Museum’s collection. \nPenned in the Margins is an award-winning small arts organisation producing new work live\, in print and online. \nInua Ellams’ The Actual can be ordered from Penned in the Margins \nDan Hicks’ The Brutish Museum can be ordered from Pluto Press with a discount which you’ll receive you’re your event ticket purchase. \nN.B. SUMMARY:Smile Train Invites Friends and Families to Host a Big Smile Tea Party
DESCRIPTION:The international children’s cleft charity Smile Train is excited to announce that their annual fundraising event\, the Big Smile Tea Party\, will return for 2021 – just in time for the Easter festivities. \nLaunching from Thursday 1 April – Friday 16 April\, the Big Smile Tea Party encourages friends\, families\, colleagues\, and students all over the UK to come together and host an internationally themed tea party whilst raising vital funds for children with clefts in need of treatment. \nWhether you choose to ‘par-tea’ at home\, schedule a tea break with colleagues over Zoom\, or FaceTime relatives from afar for an afternoon tea\, Smile Train is encouraging everybody to boil the kettle\, enjoy a slice of their favourite cake\, and have a ‘good old natter’ with the people they love whilst donating some spare change to Smile Train if they can. \nMany children around the world with clefts do not have access to proper treatment\, which can permanently impact their ability to eat\, breathe\, speak\, and ultimately thrive. To tackle this issue\, Smile Train empowers local medical professionals in 70+ countries with the training\, funding\, and resources they need to provide free cleft surgery and other forms of essential care to children in their own communities. \n \n  \n  \nAll funds raised through the Big Smile Tea Party will allow the charity to continue this lifesaving work and give more children the opportunity to live healthy and productive lives. \nThere is no time like the present to show off your lockdown baking skills\, so tie up your aprons\, dig out your best recipe books\, and whip up some treats using your favourite international ingredients to help change the world one smile at a time. \nComplimentary fundraising kits are available to order at smiletrain.org.uk/bigsmileteaparty for anyone who is eager to take part. The kits contain all the essentials you need for a successful tea party\, including Smile Train posters\, balloons\, stickers\, and a collection box. \nIan Vallance\, Director of Smile Train UK\, says: “The Big Smile Tea Party is a perfect opportunity for people to spend some quality time with their loved ones over Easter\, whether that’s in person or virtually\, whilst raising money for children in need around the world. \nTo date\, Smile Train has transformed the lives of more than 1.5 million children with the power of a brand-new forever smile. The funds we receive from the Big Smile Tea Party will enable us to continue our vital work and create even more smiles in the years to come.” \nThe Big Smile Tea Party campaign will be running from Thursday 1 April to Friday 16 April\, but you can hold one at any time. SUMMARY:Train to Teach London
DESCRIPTION:People in London are being encouraged to join a virtual careers event to find out more about life as a teacher. The session\, part of a national recruitment drive\, aims to inspire more people in the region to join a unique profession that helps shape the lives of the next generation. \nThe free virtual ‘Train to Teach London’ event will take place on Saturday and will be supported by a local teacher Dimitra Totikidou from Orleans Park School Twickenham. At the event\, maths teacher Dimitra will be live on the platform to share her experience and insights\, as well as helping others to explore teaching as a career. \nThe Train to Teach events are part of the national Get into Teaching campaign which provides a comprehensive programme of support to help graduates become teachers. Last year alone\, thousands of aspiring teachers attended a series of face-to-face events. For this academic year and in light of ongoing Covid-19 restrictions\, events are being hosted online so anyone curious or set on a career in teaching can still speak to current teachers from their area\, as well as expert advisers who can help them with training options and next steps. \nTo gain access to the online event\, people will need to register at least two working days in advance. On the day\, upon entering the virtual event platform\, attendees will be greeted with welcome videos and introductory presentations to give them a flavour of teaching. They can also enter the live marketplace where there will be experienced teacher training advisors\, current teachers and local teacher training providers who can answer any questions. \nYou could receive a £24\,000 tax-free bursary to train as a teacher\, in selected subjects\, and newly qualified teachers start on a minimum starting salary of £25\,000 to £32\,000\, depending on location. \nApplications for teacher training\, starting in September 2021\, are now open.

SUMMARY:A New History of Theresienstadt with Dr Anna Hájková
DESCRIPTION:Dr Anna Hájková\, Associate Professor at the University of Warwick\, talks about her newly published book about Terezín / Theresienstadt. The Last Ghetto offers both a modern history of this Central European ghetto and the first in-depth analytical history of a prison society during the Holocaust. The event will be chaired by Francois Guesnet\, Professor of Modern Jewish History in the Department of Hebrew and Jewish Studies at University College\, London. \nTheresienstadt was operated by the Nazis between November 1941 and May 1945 as a transit ghetto for Central and Western European Jews before their deportation for murder in the East. Today\, Theresienstadt is best known for the Nazi propaganda of the International Red Cross visit\, cultural life\, and children. But these aspects explain little what defined the lives of its 140\,000 inmates. \nThe prison society of Terezín produced its own social hierarchies under which even small differences among prisoners decided their fate. During the three and a half years of the camp’s existence\, prisoners created their own culture and habits\, bonded\, fell in love\, and forged new families. Based on extensive archival research in nine languages and on empathetic reading of victim testimonies\, The Last Ghetto casts light on human society works in extremis. \nOrganised by the Czech Centre London in collaboration with JW3. \nOnline via Zoom\, free event\, reservation necessary: http://bit.ly/Theresienstadt-booking\nA Zoom link to join this event will be included in the confirmation email upon booking.\nMore info: http://bit.ly/Theresienstadt-more-info

SUMMARY:AI: When a Robot Writes a Play
DESCRIPTION:The Czech Centre London has partnered with Prague’s Švanda Theatre and theaitre.com to present to the UK public an innovate project entitled ‘AI: When a Robot Writes a Play’ created by a team of computer scientists and drama experts led by a computational linguist. \n\n\n\nThe play\, telling a story of joy and sorrow of everyday life from a robot’s point of view\, is composed of dialogues generated by artificial intelligence to celebrate 100th anniversary of the premiere of Czech playwright Karel Čapek’s play R.U.R. in which the word ‘robot’ was first used. The 60-minute play will be performed in Czech with English subtitles and followed by a debate with artificial intelligence and theatre experts which will seek to answer the question of whether a robot can write a theatre play and thus pass the most difficult Turing test to date. The debate will be translated into English for international audiences. The event will be streamed live on the Czech Centre London’s Facebook page and on http://www.theaitre.com \n\n\n\nABOUT THE PROJECT \n\n\n\nTomáš Studeník\, Czech radical innovator\, came up with the idea to celebrate the centenary of the premiere of Čapek’s play\, originally staged in Prague in January 1921\, by replacing Čapek by artificial intelligence as the playwright. The project was created in cooperation with the Švanda Theatre\, the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the Charles University and the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. The aim has been to explore how artificial intelligence actually performs in a human creative discipline and how much it is able to create a usable theatrical script. \n\n\n\nDrama expert David Košťák who\, together with computer scientists\, oversaw the entire process\, reveals the beginning of the project when the language model was given basic parameters: who and where and two introductory replicas. These were then further developed by the computer. But as a lifeless beginner playwright\, the robot needed help from humans. ‘Sometimes it swapped female and male characters or clung to something irrelevant so the dialogue lost its meaning. And there is one more obstacle the robot is having difficulties with so far – the subtext. The play is not only about what the character says\, but also about what he or she actually thinks’\, says Košťák. \n\n\n\nWill computer programmes completely replace human playwrights one day? ‘It doesn’t look like it yet\, but it could help authors in the near future’\, concludes David Košťák. \n\n\n\nProject website: http://www.theaitre.com \n\n\n\nPartners of the project: THEaiTRE\, TA CR (The project TL03000348 THEaiTRE: Artificial Intelligence as the author of the play is co-financed with the state support of the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic within the ÉTA Program 3)\, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics\, Institute of Formal and Applied Linguistics\, CEE Hacks\, Prg.ai\, DAMU\, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic\, Czech Centers\, Prague\, Prague 5 (The theatre is a stage of the capital city of Prague and is supported by the Municipality of Prague 5).
