SUMMARY:Theory in Crisis Seminar - Sara Salem\, Anticolonial Contradictions
DESCRIPTION:What is the role of critical theory today and who is it for? What kind of maps can theory provide in the context of entrenched capitalist crisis? These are some of the questions posed by this seminar series. \nIn the aftermath of various mutations of twentieth-century ‘critical theory’ (Frankfurt School\, ‘French Theory’\, etc.)\, proponents of ‘postcritique’ have argued that critical theory has ‘run out of steam’. Instead\, this seminar series starts from the premise that 21st-century crisis has also generated dynamic new ways of reconsidering these questions. A critical theory of the present is necessarily a crisis theory. \nIn this session\, Sara Salem will give a talk titled ‘Anticolonial Contradictions: Temporality\, Capital and Theory in 1950s Egypt.’ \nThis talk explores the powerful project created in the aftermath of Egypt’s decolonisation in the 1950s and 1960s through an imagined conversation between Antonio Gramsci and Frantz Fanon\, two foundational theorists of anti-capitalism and anticolonialism. Questions of decolonisation\, capitalism\, temporality\, and mastery are explored in order to excavate anticolonial politics in all of its complexity. The talk asks what the contradictions present within these projects can tell us about social theory more broadly\, as well as how we narrate\, theorise\, and remember histories of anticolonial struggle. \nSpeaker\nSara Salem is an Assistant Professor in Sociology at the London School of Economics. Her research interests include political sociology\, postcolonial studies\, Marxist theory\, and global histories of anticolonialism. Her recently published book with Cambridge University Press is titled Anticolonial Afterlives in Egypt: The Politics of Hegemony.

SUMMARY:Singing With Nightingales: Dawn Chorus
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate International Dawn Chorus Day with this long-form live broadcast of birdsong and spoken word. \nJoin The Nest Collective online from 11pm on 1st May for a spoken-word journey\, hosted by Sam Lee\, through some of the finest poems and writings celebrating the nightingale\, the wonder of birds and the natural world. \nThis long-form broadcast will then drift into pure nightingale song through the night and\, as the birds rise\, will culminate in the dawn chorus itself\, finishing at 6am on Sunday 2nd May. \nThis live broadcast will be available for free on Youtube. \nWe are delighted to announce the contributors for this broadcast include: \nCaitlin Moran • Stewart Lee • Satish Kumar • John Lewis-Stempel • Jackie Morris • Rob Da Bank • Anita Sethi • Melissa Harrison • Mark Avery • Merlin Sheldrake • David Lindo • David Rothenberg • Mya-Rose Craig • Patrick Barkham • Farhana Yamin • Mary Colwell • Genevieve Tudor • Jay Griffiths \nInternational Dawn Chorus Day is the worldwide celebration of nature’s greatest symphony. All across the world people rise early to enjoy the sound of birdsong\, ‘from rattling wrens in Rotherham to crooning cowbirds in the Caribbean’. \nEach year\, for a short period mid-April\, a few thousand nightingales fly to southern UK from Africa. They can be heard in just a small number of special locations\, taking up songful residence after dusk. The territorial males serenade loyally each night for no more than six weeks among the blackthorn and forest margins\, giving unbelievable privilege to those who know where to go. \nIn this modern age\, with biodiversity in decline and habitats being eroded\, the nightingale has become representative of all that we have to lose. It is a small\, brown\, unremarkable-looking bird\, but it possesses one of nature’s finest singing voices. The bird winters in Africa but spends April to July mating and nesting in Europe and the Middle East. The numbers visiting England have declined so sharply that it is now on the UK’s Red List of species at the greatest conservation risk.

SUMMARY:ORIGINS 2021-22 Festival Opening
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we open the 2021-22 ORIGINS Festival with an online welcoming event\, including a performance of the short play KATHARSIS by Yvette Nolan (Algonquin\, Canada) – a digital love letter to a theatre left empty by the pandemic. \nThe 2021-22 Festival will offer an unprecedented and evolving year-long programme\, transforming digital and physical spaces into vibrant sites of creative enquiry and performance by leading Indigenous artists and thinkers. Informed by a decade of Festival activity\, ORIGINS 2021-22 arrives at a crucial moment for the planet. Covid-19 has clearly demonstrated the fragility of our way of life. Climate change\, which shares many of Covid’s causes\, poses an existential threat. #BlackLivesMatter has exposed the fundamental injustices that underpin the histories from which the globally dominant culture grew. These challenges are not only political and scientific\, but fundamentally cultural\, forming the three key themes that will lead the Festival’s journey of enquiry through the year ahead: \nCovid\nClimate Change\nColonialism \nFrom May 20\, we present a series of online literature events\, including the US Poet Laureate Joy Harjo (Mvskoke)\, novelist Stephen Graham Jones (Blackfeet\, US)\, poets Natalie Diaz (Mojave\, US)\, Liz Howard (Anishinaabe\, Canada) & Matthew James Weigel (Dënësųłinë́ & Métis\, Canada) & environmental writers Kyle Whyte (Potawatomi\, US) & Jay Griffiths (UK).\nAs the Festival evolves\, we will be moving to performance-based interventions in public spaces\, drawing powerful links between Indigenous experience\, local heritage and sustainability\, asking urgent questions while respecting the time and space needed to stop and contemplate the answers. \nWe hope you will join us to experience another way of living. \nExplore the current programme\, with more to be announced throughout the year. \nSupported by Beyond the Spectacle and the High Commission of Canada in the UK.

SUMMARY:DROWNTOWN
DESCRIPTION:Barbican online world premiere and digital tour for gritty dance-theatre show \nDouble National Dance Awards nominee Rhiannon Faith’s new show DROWNTOWN holds a mirror to a society at tipping point and is now remodelled for online presentation \nIn choreographer Rhiannon Faith’s new show DROWNTOWN\, six strangers\, weighed down by individual darkness\, come to a deprived coastal land. Seemingly abandoned\, there is no one to help but themselves. Stuck between the remains of a broken community and the vast bleakness of the sea\, they struggle with isolation\, shame and failed support systems. \nDROWNTOWN’s live world premiere was set for June 2020 at London’s Barbican. In reaction to the pandemic Faith has teamed up with award-winning Big Egg Films to create a stunning multi camera film version of the show. \nBold and brave\, the show uses autobiographical testimonials and text to give voice to the vulnerable and unheard in Britain’s areas of social deprivation. With tenderness and honesty\, the show holds up a mirror to a society at tipping point. DROWNTOWN arrives to help save our world from drowning. \nRhiannon Faith explained ‘DROWNTOWN was made with a hope to heal a broken world. With the profound loneliness and isolation many have experienced during the lockdowns I really didn’t want to delay the opportunity for people to see it. As communities start to put their lives back together\, this show is asking that everyone is included in the process\, and there is authentic belonging for all.’ \nThe World Premiere will be hosted by London’s Barbican on 1 June 2021 at 7pm. Watch via the Barbican website at https://www.barbican.org.uk/whats-on/2021/event/rhiannon-faith-company-drowntown-film\nJoin the creator/Director and cast on Facebook at 8:45 for a live Q&A after the show. \nThe Barbican will then host the film to watch on demand until 6 June. SUMMARY:Imagination Manifesto – Levent Oyluçtarhan
DESCRIPTION:Imagination Manifesto\, a solo presentation of works by Turkish artist Levent Oyluçtarhan\, invites the viewer into a world with continuously shifting shades\, textures\, and tones. Oyluçtarhan’s paintings brim with an amalgamation of forms and patterns that can be found only within the artist’s vision. \nOyluçtarhan’s work embodies a narrative in which imagination challenges objective values. People\, animals\, places and metamorphosed forms are hidden amongst colours and textures; at any one time these figures can inhabit earth\, sea or space – concurrently\, at times. His research is concerned with the way in which abstract patterns can coexist within concrete forms – thus posing the question: can objective values find a place within an imaginative reality? \nThe visuality of Oyluçtarhan’s paintings is reminiscent of Picasso’s work on the complexity of forms. The works in the exhibition that adopt a monochrome palette suggest a reference to the Cubists’ experiments with depth perception\, and working with the technique of grisaille. The series of works that make use of grisaille are distinguishable by their sole use of black and white. However\, in contrast to this minimal palette\, the rich figurative components of these works make use of distinctive textures and brushstrokes. The striped backgrounds found in the monochrome series are not only suggestive of flags and clothing patterns\, but allow the figures in the foreground to appear more voluminous. \nOyluçtarhan’s works in colour are awash with expressivity\, further emphasized by the undulating shades and tones\, from deep blues to glowing neon. According to Oyluçtarhan\, colour is a very effective tool with which to invoke emotion. The entanglement of bodies leads the viewer to consider the emotional compound of the paintings. Looking closely at the interlacement of the figures\, one encounters natural elements and metamorphosed forms such as flowers\, and the tails and horns of animals. \nThe combination of vivid neon colors\, disfigured human body parts and distorted facial expressions encourages the viewer to unravel the tangle of Oyluçtarhan’s fantasy world. These figures create their own movement across the composition; they exist within their own imaginative reality. \n”I see colour as a gateway to my world\, which I project onto the canvas. Then comes the tissues; then the forms I hide between the tissues. Once this is coupled with the imagination of the viewer\, the story begins. It makes sense to me that the viewer is involved in my paintings by looking at them with their own cultural background and unique imagination. \nI think every colour speaks to a different emotion. Considering the varying hues that inhabit my work\, we find ourselves adventuring through an unlimited narrative. In my paintings\, I add colours\, forms and textures. I’m creating deformations\, metamorphoses; I think it’s all a combination of riches. It is an example of how differences can coexist – it’s the harmony of multiple voices. \nArt is an adventure. Sometimes it’s full of surprises. In each of my paintings\, the viewer embarks on an endless journey. Every time you look at my work\, you see a different form\, a different shape. With my paintings\, I invite you to step away from the reality of the world and embark on a journey into the world of dreams”.\n– Levent Oyluçtarhan \nLevent Oyluçtarhan is a Turkish artist\, born in 1978. He lives and works in Eskişehir and Milas. In 2011\, Oyluçtarhan graduated from Anadolu University’s Faculty of Fine Arts in Eskişehir\, Turkey\, with a degree in Painting. Selected past exhibitions include: Chameleon (2018) and Alga Marina (2017) at Galeri Soyut in Ankara\, Turkey; Frutti Di Mare (2017) at Atatürk Culture Art and Congress Center in Eskişehir\, Turkey; State of Mind (2012) at Gallery Workshop Çamurdam in Eskişehir\, Turkey. \nCurator: Tima Jam\nAssistant Curators: Anastasia Anastasiadou\, Louis Chapple\, Alisa Lisovskaia\,\nMarija Pleskacova\, Arnis Putnins\, Maryam Sajedi

SUMMARY:Nano: Free Science Workshop for Children
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is aimed at children aged 5-12 and their families.  \nThe spectacular science of the very (very) small \nJoin Imperial physicist Dr Jess Wade and award-winning illustrator Melissa Castrillón to explore the spectacular science of nanomaterials. \nWe’ll shrink ourselves down to the size of atoms and molecules to explore exactly what makes certain nanomaterials so incredible. By moving atoms very carefully\, scientists can create extraordinary nanomaterials\, creating technologies to build a better world. The workshop will include hands-on activities\, experiments and drawing challenges. Join in their conversation about how materials can change our lives and protect the planet – and pick up some drawing tips too. \nThis workshop is aimed at children aged 5-12 and their families. \nYou will need paper\, coloured pens or pencils\, and a few household materials to take part. We will let you know all the details before the event.
