SUMMARY:The Emil Zátopek Run
DESCRIPTION:Thames Valley Harriers (TVH) athletic club and the Czech Centre (CC) have the pleasure to announce the third London charity run organised in the name of the brilliant Czech runner Emil Zátopek. \nRunners and families alike are invited to join in for a fun day out. All raised funds will be donated towards The Zátopek‘s Athletic Fellowship supporting young athletes from disadvantaged backgrounds in West London. \nMore information and registration: https://bit.ly/ZatopekRun2024 \n  \nThe Emil Zátopek Run was first organised by CC and TVH in 2022 to celebrate Zátopek’s centennial anniversary and raise funds for a newly established Zátopek Athletic Fellowship awarded to promising young athletes from disadvantaged local community. \nThe aim of the Zátopek Athletic Fellowship is to support and ignite the sporting and personal attributes that Zátopek represented in young\, talented athletes that strive to follow in his footsteps and to contribute to advancing their athletic careers.\nProceeds from starting fees as well as all voluntary contributions towards the Zátopek Run will be donated to support the Fellowship. \nAfter the RUN there will be a medal ceremony to award the winners\, followed by an informal gathering at the Linford Christie Athletic Stadium. Refreshments available. \nAbout Emil Zátopek\nThe legendary Czech runner Emil Zátopek (1922-2000)\, nicknamed Czech locomotive\, won his first Olympic medal in London in 1948. Best known for his distinctive running style and his many athletic achievements and records – up to this date Zátopek remains the only runner to win the 5\,000m\, the 10\,000m and the marathon at the same Olympic Games\, which he obtained in Helsinki in 1952. Besides his athletic accomplishments\, Zátopek received international acclaim for his vocal public condemnation of the 1968 Russian invasion of Czechoslovakia which led to his denouncement by the Czechoslovak communist government and a controlled detention. \nThere are many books and films about Zátopek’s life and sport achievements\, including British author Richard Askwith’s biography Today We Die a Little: The Rise and Fall of Emil Zatopek\, Olympic Legend. \nIn 2013 Runner’s World Magazine named Zátopek the ‚Greatest Runner of All Time‘. \n

SUMMARY:The Doko Challenge South
DESCRIPTION:Put yourself to the test\, Gurkha style! Take on our annual 5km Doko Challenge South. This unique event sees participants running in the footsteps of the ‘Bravest of the Brave’.  Based on a pivotal part of the Gurkha selection process\, we challenge you to take on a 5km course with a weighted Nepali Doko basket strapped to your back.   What is a Doko? A traditional Nepalese conical-shaped basket\, usually hand woven from bamboo\, fitted with shoulder straps and a ‘namlo’ (head strap) to support the load.  The baskets are used to carry a whole host of things\, from clothing to bricks!   A Historic Challenge Every British Army Gurkha Soldier will be familiar with the ‘Doko Race’.  During the renowned annual Gurkha recruitment drive\, the aspiring recruits are tasked with ascending a gruelling course in the foothills of the Himalayas carrying a ‘Doko’ loaded with 25kg of sand.  They must complete the course within 46 minutes to proceed through to the next round of selection.   Our Doko South Race Based on the traditional exercise\, we have mapped out an undulating\, cross-country course through Wimbledon Common.  On Sunday 16 June 2023\, we challenge you to complete the 5km route carrying a Doko basket weighted with 5kg\, 10kg or 15kg.  You can run\, jog\, or walk\, but those looking to push themselves can aim to beat the Gurkha recruitment time of 46 minutes\, or even the course record of 19 minutes 30 seconds!  Regardless of your time\, a coveted Doko Challenge medal and t-shirt awaits at the finish line.   Supporting Gurkha veterans and widows in Nepal Alongside keeping fit and challenging yourself\, you can take great pride in raising money to support our team in Nepal\, keeping our Gurkha veterans and widows safe and giving them the means to live with dignity.  We suggest you set a fundraising target of £150.  Your online fundraising page will be created automatically when you register\, and we will be on hand throughout to answer any queries you may have.

SUMMARY:Where's Wally? Fun Run
DESCRIPTION:Distance: 2.5k\, 5k\, 10k \nRegistration cost: £27 adults\, £15 children\, £78 family (early bird discount of 10% with code WALLY10) \nFundraising pledge: £50/person (over £100 entered into prize draw) \nThe Where’s Wally? Fun Run is a race like no other. Dress up as beloved fictional character Where’s Wally and see if you can be spotted amongst a sea of other Wallys running around Battersea Park. Fun for all the family (including furry friends!) and for serious runners looking for a not-so-serious race experience\, the Where’s Wally? Fun Run is a great way to support the vital work of the National Literacy Trust. \nWith the vital funds you raise\, we can empower children who are facing the biggest disadvantages in life\, with the literacy skills they need to help them shape their future. Over a quarter of children left primary school this year without being able to read well\, which can have a huge knock-on effect for the rest of their lives\, from success at school to even navigating every day life\, as well as impacting their confidence and self-esteem. But we believe that literacy is for everyone\, and there are no limits\, no lost causes\, no last chances. \nHelp us give these children the tools they need to change their story\, by getting your stripes and running shoes on and being a Wally for the day.

After last year’s sell-out event\, places are sure to be in demand\, and competition will be fierce! \nYou can choose a weight for your Doko basket of 5kg\, 10kg or 15kg\, and run\, jog\, or walk the route. Those looking to push themselves can aim to beat the Gurkha recruitment time of 46 minutes or even last year’s fastest time of 21 minutes 18 seconds!

SUMMARY:The International Premiere of Zátopek + Q&A
DESCRIPTION:The riveting story of a Czech Olympic icon and one of the greatest runners of all time\, Emil Zátopek\, became a global byword for sportsmanship and generosity and was driven into obscurity by the Communists after standing up for ‘socialism with a human face’. \nAn inspiring portrayal of the Czech Olympic legend Emil Zátopek\, one of the greatest long-distance runners of all time\, who won five Olympic medals\, set eighteen world records and redefined the limits of human endurance. It´s autumn 1968\, and in the wake of the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia\, the Australian runner Ron Clarke visits the retired Zátopek\, his friend and role model\, to help him overcome a crisis in his sporting career. With Zátopek amid his own marital and personal problems\, they walk down memory lane recalling Zátopek’s athletic career from Zlín factory worker who had never taken part in a race to Olympic hero in Helsinki\, while mapping the inner journey of a single-minded man whose unprecedented athletic success made him part of Communist propaganda with devastating results. \n \nWonderfully portrayed by lead actors Václav Neužil and Martha Issová\, it is the relationship between Zátopek and his wife Dana\, champion javelin thrower\, which is at the heart of the story as past and present alternate\, emotions and adrenalin run high culminating in a breathtaking reenactment of Zátopek’s 1952 Olympic gold hat-trick in Helsinki. \nDavid Ondříček\, CZ / SK 2021\, 131´\, English subtitles \nAudience prize winner at the 2021 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival \nCzech entry in the best international film category at the 2022 Oscars \nPart of the 25th Made in Prague Festival (7 Oct – 10 Dec 2021) \n6.30 pm – doors open \n7 pm Zatopek (no commercials) \nSeats will be allocated on a first come\, first served basis.
