SUMMARY:Gypsy\, Roma\, Traveller Heritage in Wandsworth: Guided Walk and Plaque Unveiling
DESCRIPTION:This walk will take place in the Wandle Valley area between Earlsfield andWandsworth\, a stretch of SW London where nomadic people came to settle in the late 19th century. SUMMARY:Guided Walk: Celebrating Romany\, Gypsy and Traveller Heritage
DESCRIPTION:This Guided Walk is the perfect warm-up to ‘The People of Wardley Street’ project\, unveiling a plaque to celebrate Romany Gypsy and Traveller heritage in Wandsworth a few weeks later. \nIt explores locations relevant to this history in the neighbouring Battersea area\, next door to Clapham Junction. Amongst a tangle of railway lines\, we will see how Victorian industrialisation attracted nomadic people to the edges of the city and visit the locations of some of the yards where they settled in the last decades of the 19th century. The Walk also takes in two remarkable housing estates\, Latchmere and Shaftesbury and features many of the extraordinary personalities who made there mark in this fascinating area; Charlotte Despard\, John Burns and Shapurji Saklatvala. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is part of London Unseen and will be free to attend thanks to funding from the Mayor of London’s Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm.

SUMMARY:Mendoza Mania -Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Come and join our exciting Immersive Exhibition Day on September 18th to celebrate the life of local boxing legend Daniel Mendoza. \n\n\n\nThe immersive event in Paradise Gardens is a community-focused celebration of the life and times of Portuguese Jewish bare-knuckle boxer Daniel Mendoza (1764-1836)\, who helped make the sport what it is today and was the first true sporting celebrity in Britain. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition is a way to engage the wider community in the histories of boxing and the Jewish connection to the East End dating back to Mendoza’s time and to explore how community members from a wide range of backgrounds are today “fighting back” against racism\, discrimination and other challenges they encounter. \n\n\n\nQR codes placed on trees in Paradise Gardens will connect to a site where visitors can listen to extracts from Mendoza’s memoirs and oral histories of local people whose experiences relate closely to Mendoza’s. \n\n\n\nThere will also be workshops happening between 12 pm-4 pm which will be family-friendly\, celebrate Daniel Mendoza and include poetry\, readings\, art and craft! \n\n\n\nAll these events are accessible\, family-friendly\, and open to all. You’ll be sent a fill programme closer to the day when you sign up. \n\n\n\nYou can come along for as long or as little time as you like. \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions about the event or access\, email stuart@stmargaretshouse.org.uk \n\n\n\nMendoza Mania is a project supported by the National Heritage Lottery Fund.

SUMMARY:Self-Guided Augmented Reality Chinatown Walk
DESCRIPTION:Augmented Chinatown 2.0 is an app from the UK’s leading platform for British Chinese artists\, Chinese Arts Now (CAN)\, producers and creators of art telling Chinese stories in contemporary and innovative ways. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLondon’s Chinatown\, and the area it sits in\, has been the stage for a multitude of stories over its constantly evolving history. Augmented Chinatown 2.0 brings some of those stories to life in an immersive augmented reality experience which mixes striking visuals\, miniature audio dramas\, atmospheric music and a guided tour through the area’s past and present and how it became the centre of the Chinese community in London. \nUsers start the tour in Newport Place and walk the streets guided by writer and narrator\, Joel Tan. Over the course of an hour\, Tan’s narration looks at Chinatown’s history\, architecture and culture\, as well as ideas about belonging\, identity and migration. He evokes the sensory impact of the streets\, the ornate decorations\, the tempting smells and tastes\, and distinctive sounds. He takes us to the four gates\, only the last of which was created by Chinese artists\, and tells how the iconic pagoda was demolished in 2015 without consultation. \nThe app is available on Google Play and the App Store. \nThis event is part of London Unseen and will be free to attend thanks to funding from the Mayor of London’s Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm.

SUMMARY:The Fight For Women’s Rights in Summerstown: Guided Walk
DESCRIPTION:‘The Corruganza Boxmakers’ were a group of 44 courageous young women\, largely uneducated who in the face of a savage pay cut went on strike at a cardboard box factory in south west London in 1908. \nThey were supported and encouraged by trade union pioneer Mary Macarthur. Their action paved the way for much higher profile events like the Cradley Heath Chainmakers and the Bermondsey Uprising\, all in the frontline of the struggle for women’s rights in the workplace. Its an inspirational story that deserves a wider audience and for that reason we will be acknowledging it next year with the placing of a blue plaque. \nThe Walk which covers the site of the box factory in a fascinating part of Earlsfield between Wimbledon Stadium and the River Wandle takes in key locations relating to industries which employed women and passes some of the homes where they lived. \nThis walk is provided free to the public as part of London Unseen\, thanks to funding from the Mayor of London’s Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Guided Walk: Tooting’s Migrant Heritage
DESCRIPTION:The Tooting-Wandsworth area of south-west London is rich in history and the contribution of migrants dates back centuries to the arrival of French Huguenots. As its expanding population saw it turn from a village to a suburb\, a wave of Jewish tailoring businesses saw Tooting High Street flourish. Over the last seventy years the arrival of a migrant population helped rebuild a shattered post-war country\, whether\nthrough constructing homes\, staffing London Transport and the newly-formed NHS or introducing their music and cuisine. \nThis walk is provided free to the public as part of London Unseen\, thanks to funding from the Mayor of London’s Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm.

SUMMARY:Clapham's Hidden Links to Sierra Leone: Guided Walk
DESCRIPTION:A Heritage Trail Exploring Clapham’s hidden links to Sierra Leone\, its ‘Province of Freedom’ and Freetown. \nThis walk through Clapham Common\, facilitated by historian Steve Martin and historical researcher Iyamide Thomas will provide the often untold story of how Britain\, through involvement in the Transatlantic Slave Trade and its abolition is uniquely linked to Sierra Leone and its ‘Krio’ people. The Krio are mainly the descendants of previously enslaved African\, African-American and Caribbean people. \nIyamide and Steve will explore the founding of a ‘Province of Freedom’ and ‘Free Town’ by abolitionists Granville Sharp and others known as the ‘Clapham Sect’ – mainly prominent\, wealthy evangelical Anglicans who worshipped at Holy Trinity Church on Clapham Common at the end of the 18th Century. William Wilberforce and Henry Thornton\, two of the group’s most influential leaders\, resided in Clapham and many of the meetings were held in their houses. In 1799 the Sect founded the African Academy\, a school to educate mainly boys from Africa\, a few of whom are buried in Clapham. \nAll the above and much more fascinating history awaits you on this interesting heritage trail! \nAs part of London Unseen\, this walk is free to the public thanks to funding from the Mayor of London’s Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm.

SUMMARY:Guided Walk: Follow the Footsteps of Activist & Workers' Champion\, Francis Kitz
DESCRIPTION:‘Frankie Goes to Collywood’ is a walk dedicated to the life of times of a remarkable individual called Francis Kitz who devoted his life to supporting people caught up in the turbulent period of the late industrial revolution. \nWhether they were the very poorest Londoners\, oppressed workers or foreign refugees fleeing the pogroms in Europe\, he was on their side. Kitz was also a dyer and political ally of William Morris and it was working for him at the Merton Printworks that brought him to the Colliers Wood area. \nKitz’ contribution to working people on the Wandle was acknowledged earlier this year with the placing of a blue plaque and a number of Walks covering his central London connections and haunts. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is part of London Unseen and will be free to attend thanks to funding from the Mayor of London’s Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm.
