SUMMARY:The Pioneering Pensioners
DESCRIPTION:Mick Fowler and Victor Saunders are now officially pensioners\, with Saunders in his early 70s and Fowler in his late 60s. Despite being at a point in life when most people are hanging up their boots\, the pair are still as excited as ever for exploratory climbing. \nIn 2024\, the pair travelled to the Pakistani Karakoram where\, over seven days\, they made the first ascent of the spectacular Yawash Sar (6258m)\, a beautiful peak sometimes referred to as “the Matterhorn of the Khunjerab.” \nEven more impressively\, Fowler\, a cancer survivor\, made the climb (which included a night spent hanging from the side of the mountain in their harnesses) while wearing a colostomy bag. \nFor one night only\, they join us at the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) to discuss their latest climb\, their enduring partnerhsip and their future plans (because they aren’t stopping yet!)

SUMMARY:The Fading Light London Ghost Walk
DESCRIPTION:Hello\, everyone. My name is Alan Aspinall\, and I want to introduce you to the ghosts and spirits that walk the streets of London at night. \nEngland is said to be the most haunted country on earth\, and indeed\, there are more ghost stories and strange tales\, mile for mile\, than any other place in the world. With such a rich and varied history\, this is no real surprise. Therefore\, it seems only fitting that it should also have the most haunted capital. On this ghost walk\, we will encounter everything from murderous queens to demon dogs and a few gentler souls. While this walk is primarily a ghost walk\, I will also point out a few places of historical interest. \nTickets can be booked through my Website\, http://www.fadinglightghostwalk.com

Best known for his distinctive running style and his many athletic achievements and records – up to this date Zátopek remains the only runner to win the 5\,000m\, the 10\,000m and the marathon at the same Olympic Games\, which he obtained in Helsinki in 1952. Besides his athletic accomplishments\, Zátopek received international acclaim for his vocal public condemnation of the 1968 Russian invasion of Czechoslovakia which led to his denouncement by the Czechoslovak communist government and a controlled detention. \nThere are many books and films about Zátopek’s life and sport achievements\, including British author Richard Askwith’s biography Today We Die a Little: The Rise and Fall of Emil Zatopek\, Olympic Legend. \nIn 2013 Runner’s World Magazine named Zátopek the ‚Greatest Runner of All Time‘. \n
