She has written numerous scholarly papers and books\, including African Europeans: an Untold History (2020) and has been a broadcaster and consultant on numerous films and documentaries\, including Netflix’s African Queens (2023). She also works extensively with policymakers and institutions to engage with histories of colonial slavery and restorative justice strategies. \n\n\n\nRenée Landell is a writer\, literary critic and cultural historian. SUMMARY:Women in Focus: Eva Jiřičná
DESCRIPTION:Our popular Women in Focus series is set to continue after the summer with a talk by the world-renowned\, Czech-born architect Eva Jiřičná. During the talk\, Ms Jiřičná\, who is best known for her shop interiors and residential projects\, will discuss her signature glass staircases and the limits of structural engineering as well as her most recent projects and the need for sustainable architecture. \n\n\n\nFurthermore\, the talk will touch on the topics such as the importance of public spaces\, green living and the regeneration of city suburbs. Using her 50+ years of experience in the field\, Ms Jiřičná will compare how various challenges are approached in different parts of the world\, and she will give a brief overview of the changing tasks architects have faced in the last 40-50 years.  \n\n\n\nThe final part of the evening will allow enough time for questions from the audience to open a lively discussion on architecture\, urbanism\, and beyond.  \n\n\n\nAbout Eva Jiřičná \n\n\n\nEva Jiřičná\, a Czech-born architect based in London since 1968\, completed her architectural education at The Technical University in Prague\, where she qualified with a title of an Engineer-Architect and later on at The Academy of Fine Arts\, where she completed her Masters degree. After the Russian Invasion\, she remained in England – she worked on the Brighton Marina project and on Lloyd’s Building and started her own practice in 1982.  \n\n\n\nEva became well known for the interiors of shops and residential projects and mainly glass staircases but also for her work at the Victoria and Albert Museum\, Canada Water Bus Station\, Leicester Library\, Orangery at Prague’s Castle and many others. She opened with a Czech partner Petr Vágner another practice AI DESIGN in Prague in 1999 and completed many projects there\, including hotels\, University buildings\, Multipurpose Auditorium\, amongst others.  \n\n\n\nEva has been appointed Professor and has a long teaching experience. She is a member of the Royal Academy of Arts\, the Royal Designer for Industry\, and an honorary member of the Royal Society of Arts. She has been awarded by CBE and received 11 honorary doctorates. Recently she has been awarded the Ambassador of the Czech Republic by the Czech Top 100 and Lifetime Achievement Medal by the London Design Festival.

DESCRIPTION:Kateřina Svitková\, attacking midfielder playing for Chelsea FC\, the top English FA WSL club\, has made a remarkable international football career. She started at Slavia Prague\, where she scored an impressive 188 goals in 177 appearances. She was top scorer in the Czech First Division in both the 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons and has been named Czech Footballer of the Year a remarkable four times. In 2020 she moved to the Women’s Super League when she signed for West Ham and then two years later for Chelsea. Kateřina will discuss the peaks of her amazing football career\, how to deal with pressure in sport\, and give aspiring footballers lots of tips and inspiration. \n\n\n\n\nFollowed by a Q&A session with the audience. \nABOUT KATEŘINA \nAlthough Kateřina’s dog Buffon has not yet got used to the new place\, Kateřina Svitková is very happy. She’s playing for Chelsea FC. The legendary club she’s been a fan of since she was a little girl. In the realm of the European champions\, where women’s football is at its peak. \nWhen Kateřina joined West Ham she performed a song by the famous Czech singer Marek Ztracený to introduce herself and to greet her new teammates. In Chelsea\, she chose the everlasting anthem Wonderwall by Oasis. She wanted her teammates to join in and start with good vibes before the first training day. The Czech Republic international joined the Blues in July 2022 and scored her first goal for the club during their 8-0 win over Vllaznia in the Champions League group stages in October.

DESCRIPTION:Art historian\, writer and curator of the Modern and Contemporary Art Collection at the National Gallery Prague\, Monika Čejková\, will open our new talk series\, Women in Focus. Monika will discuss her interest in contemporary art\, which paved her journey to becoming an author and curator. She will also describe her recent projects\, mostly dealing with the notion and modification of art in the digital age. Specifically\, she will talk about the philosophy of new technologies\, artificial intelligence\, cyberculture and the topics of the post-gender world\, post-humanism and digisexuality. \n\n\n\nMonika’s talk will be followed by a Q&A session with the audience. \n\n\n\nAbout the speaker: \n\n\n\nMonika Čejková is a curator of the next Fotograf Festival 2023: #Hypertension23 at National Gallery Prague and Ora et lege II at Broumov Monastery\, 2023. Recent exhibitions include\, e.g.\, The Palace of Concrete Poetry at Writers House of Georgia in Tbilisi (2022)\, Neo-rising at Polansky Gallery in Prague (2022)\, Ora et lege I at Broumov Monastery (2021)\, Fantasy Finery at Berlínskej model Gallery in Prague (2021)\, Blasted Heathat AM 180 Gallery in Prague (2020). She studied the History of Art at Charles University in Prague. She is currently undergoing a curatorial residency at the Delfina Foundation in London\, during which she plans to continue to explore the theme of art in the (post) digital age and extend her research to art about the new identity of the human being whose original form has been abstracted by digital space. \n\n\n\nIn 2020\, Monika launched a long-term nomadic project titled “Ora et lege” – a critical dialogue between contemporary art and the teachings of the Benedictine order and the Catholic Church. DESCRIPTION:Afghan women’s charity Rahela Trust urges people to attend a special International Women’s Day event to fight for women’s rights in Afghanistan.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDuring the month of International Women’s Day 2022\, Afghan women saw even more of their rights decimated by the Taliban regime; women must not be employed in offices\, must not leave home and must not enter health centres without mahram. \n\n\n\nOne year on “and the situation for women in Afghanistan is dire”\, comments Rahela Sidiqi\, founder of Rahela Trust\, a charity that supports the marginalised women of Afghanistan. \n\n\n\nThis International Women’s Day\, and the one-year anniversary of unimaginable restrictions on women’s freedom in Afghanistan\, Rahela Trust is calling on people not to forget the women of Afghanistan and continue to pressure their local representatives to keep it on the agenda. \n\n\n\nAt the International Women’s Day event at Second Home\, Rahela Trust will set out six ways in which people can help which will include tangible actions you can take to make a personal impact on championing Afghan women’s education. \n\n\n\nCollective action is crucial to making a difference and helping Afghan women. Rahela Trust is urging allies of the Afghan people to attend the event on 8th March\, enabling them to understand better how they can contribute and effect change. \n\n\n\nMany women have fled Afghanistan\, making a life-threatening journey from their homeland\, but there are many women still living in the country who fear for their lives with every hour that passes. \n\n\n\nEvacuation schemes for Afghans\, such as the ACRS are operating with limited resources. Reports have shown that a team of under a dozen are managing the resettlement scheme\, handling 11\,000 applications with just 1\,500 spaces. In context\, over 500 staff members run the parallel resettlement scheme for Ukrainians. \n\n\n\n“The situation for women worsens day by day\, but this does not mean that we lose our passion for fighting for women’s rights and their right to an education. Machatý\, together with cinematographer Václav Vích and avant-garde set designer Alexander Hackenschmied (a.k.a. Sasha Hammid) transformed a simple story into a work of compelling effect\, creating an arresting visual style and cinematic language full of poetic details that offered a provocative view of the inner world of the characters while creating a benchmark in the development of erotic photography. This 1993 restoration includes previously censored footage. \nThe event is part of the 26th Made in Prague Festival organized by Czech Centre London.

In celebrating the women’s style\, you will be empowered and inspired as you step foot into the new bold styles of the season. \n  \nKicking off Monday 24th\, throughout the week\, our professional fashion photographer will be on hand to direct you through your best poses while wearing the new season boots. Streamed directly onto the store windows – you’ll be the face of Timberland Carnaby Street! \n  \nTimberland has also linked up with arguably one of the UK’s most sought-after stylists\, Coco Mell\, on Saturday\, 29th October. Coco will share with you her expertise in fashion\, lending you tips and tricks on how to style this season’s bold collection – the Sky\, Cortina Valley and Greyfield\, while you get your photo taken. \n  \nThe fun doesn’t stop there. On Saturday\, we have illustrator Tegan Price art painting workshops throughout the day at 3 pm\, 4.30 pm 6 pm\, sharing her skills and techniques with you to create a masterpiece that reflects your style. \n  \nSign up for your ticket. This is a free event\, and it will be on a first-come\, first-serve basis. \n  \nAll participants will also be entered into the styling competition\, and the winner will be selected by Coco herself! \nAll participants will automatically have their images streamed on the windows of the Carnaby Street store. \n  \n#TBLSky \n  \nTerms and Conditions \n– By entering\, you are giving permission for your image to be used across Timberland Carnaby Street window and Timberland Instagram channels \n– By participating in the photoshoot\, you will automatically be entered into the competition to win the overall prize \n– Private styling session limited to 1 prize \n– Timberland free boots limited to 1 prize\, and must choose between Sky\, Greyfield and Cortina Valley styles \n– Please arrive 5 minutes before your selected painting workshop time to avoid disappointment
