SUMMARY:Tea Towels and Tantrums: Live Podcast Panel – London Podcast Festival
DESCRIPTION:London Podcast Festival – Comedian and Funny Women finalist Ola Labib joins Hajar J. Woodland to discuss growing up in (and out of) hijab.\n‘Why have you got a tea towel on your head?’ That’s the question writer\, and performer Hajar J. Woodland was constantly asked throughout her childhood. Raised Muslim\, she was only five when she started wearing the headscarf – well before even the strictest Muslims would consider it mandatory. Thirty years on and no longer a hijabi\, she lives with the conflicts of a British Muslim identity\, which she explored in her podcast Conversations with My Sister. \nHajar’s now bringing the most popular episode\, Tea Towel\, to a live audience. Tea Towels and Tantrums will give you an insight into how it feels to wear the headscarf and why girls wear it. We ask how much of a say parents\, schools and governments should have in what a child wears and cover everything from bodily autonomy and sexuality to cultural conflicts and Islamophobia. \nYes\, we’re focusing on the hijab – but this conversation’s about so much more. We determine what children wear has far-reaching implications for everyone\, so you won’t want to miss this. \nIf you like your discussions funny\, nuanced and empathic\, this is for you. Expect a light touch on one heavy subject!

SUMMARY:Comedy Show – Shazia Mirza: Coconut
DESCRIPTION:Following the success of her critically acclaimed recent shows\, Shazia is taking on the burning (and infectious) issues of our time in her latest comedy show\, ‘Coconut’.\n“I wrote this show two years ago. It was relevant\, funny\, timely\, and I knew every single bit of it. Then one day in March\, the world ended. I had nothing to do\, nowhere to go\, and I did what everyone else was doing. I sat on the settee in my pyjamas\, stuffing myself with Nutella whilst watching documentaries on Ted Bundy. I thought I’d better change my show and make it more relevant: no one cares about reality TV\, celebrity and me starving in a jungle; let’s get real. \nPeople have been struggling to get eggs these past 12 months. Prince Harry told The Queen to do one\, Meghan Markle turned into the new Yoko Ono\, and a few more black people were on ITV. But\, then\, things got serious\, and I have to make some jokes on this while I’m playing to sell-out crowds of 100 people in 3000 seater stadiums”. \nRecently seen back to absolute basics in Channel 4’s Celebrity Island with Bear Grylls\, taking a speedy turn (2.07 seconds to be exact) in BBC2’s Top Gear and temporarily enjoying the high life in Channel 4’s Travel Man – 48 Hours In… Côte d’Azur\, Shazia has also guested on ITV’s Jonathan Ross and Loose Women\, BBC1’s The One Show\, and is a regular panellist on Channel 5’s The Wright Stuff.

SUMMARY:Indie Bookshop Phlox Celebrates International Women's Day in Connaught Village
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate IWD\, Connaught Village invites indie bookshop Phlox Books to pop up over March with women-focused books and female author events featuring the likes of Abi Daré and Mona Arshi to showcase the female experience in literary form. \nFounder of East London independent bookshop Phlox Books\, Aimée Madill has proudly been serving ‘Books. Booze. Coffee’ since 2017 and is no stranger to pop-up bookstores in her role as ‘go-to’ for festival bookshops. On this occasion\, Aimée has taken the opportunity IWD has presented to platform female authors and host a series of events in Connaught Village. Located at 12 Connaught Street\, the pop-up will operate as a bookshop and events space where notable authors will discuss their work. \nAt street view\, the front of the bookstore will feature hand-painted illustrations by female illustrator Alezeia Fidalgo who has a penchant for books and creating original illustrations to accompany the text. \nThe first event at Phlox Connaught Village will take place on the day itself\, Tuesday 8th March\, with award-winning author\, Abi Daré\, whose debut novel ‘The Girl With the Louding Voice’ was published in 2020\, longlisted for the Desmond Elliott Prize and chosen as a BBC Radio 4 Book at Bedtime. Abi will be joined by Mona Arshi\, a regular contributor to BBC Radio 4 and poet whose debut collection of poems received the Forward Prize for Best First Collection and appeared in the Poems on the Underground series. Arshi will be talking about her debut novel\, ‘Somebody Loves You’ (published 2021). Events will continue throughout March with a selection of authors handpicked by Aimée. Each event will see a discussion between the authors and an open forum for the audience to explore different themes of the female experience. \nEach event promises guests a deep dive into each woman’s creative process and an excellent chance to explore their views on IWD\, the female gaze\, and their respective literary futures. Wine will be served\, provided by Connaught Cellars\, in line with Phlox Book’s mantra of making bookshops relaxed\, social spaces. \nTickets for the event are free\, but registration is necessary\, although some spaces will be reserved for walk-ins. Visit the Connaught Village website events page to register your place here: https://www.connaught-village.co.uk/events/

SUMMARY:Fighting On All Fronts: Women At War
DESCRIPTION:AntikBar\, the original vintage poster specialist\, will be holding an exhibition focusing on the role of women during World War Two featuring posters issued by both Allied and Axis powers\, in particular the UK\, USA\, USSR and some Nazi-occupied countries. Fighting On All Fronts: Women At War will be held at their gallery in Chelsea from International Women’s Day to Victory Day (8 March to 9 May). \n\n\n\nLabour shortages on the home front during WWII led to dramatic changes to the role of women in society. Jobs in factories\, agriculture\, nursing and other vital military and civilian industries that were previously seen as occupations mainly for men were now opened up to women. Posters played a big part in the publicity campaigns\, using patriotic appeal to encourage women to help win the war and secure victory by joining the workforce. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition will show how poster design and visual messaging varied in the different countries depending on the impact of war on the population and the roles of women in the conflict. Although they replaced men in the war production in all countries\, women’s day-to-day realities were very different. \n\n\n\nOne of the first countries to declare war on Nazi Germany\, Britain suffered extensive bombing during the Blitz\, as well as food shortages and rationing. The duties of women concentrated on providing support to the troops\, handling war logistics and health and safety measures. The imagery of British posters emphasises practical efforts rather than damage and destruction; the presence of the enemy is felt but not witnessed. In contrast\, the Soviet Union was partially occupied by Nazi troops and its population experienced war and violence first-hand. Women were engaged in battle\, abused by the occupants\, and subjected to bombing and severe food shortages. Reflecting this reality\, the poster messaging is explicit\, often violent and brutal\, and women are depicted directly fighting the enemy. In America daily life during the war was mostly affected by the rationing of food\, gasoline\, tyre and nylon stockings. The poster designs are often stylish and glamorous\, elevating participation in the war effort. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition is free and will be open to the public during the gallery opening hours.

SUMMARY:Figures of Change Public Art Trail\, Wembley Park
DESCRIPTION:Wembley Park springs to life with a free public art trail\, ‘Figures of Change’ \n\n\n\nWembley Park has launched a free\, colour-pop\, all-women art trail\, ‘Figures of Change’\, unveiling eight major public realm artworks by leading female artists from around the world\, curated by Zoë Allen of Artistic Statements and assembled by an all-woman team of 16x.  The ambitious project will further establish Wembley Park’s credentials as a major cultural hub for Northwest London.  \n\n\n\nZoë Allen\, curator\, added: “We’ve had little to no access to culture and the arts throughout the global pandemic and we’ve been starved of inspiration – something that’s so important for the human psyche\, so inspiration and accessibility are two of the major driving forces behind this art trail. The project creates a wholly accessible public art trail\, providing a unique and exciting platform for artists to showcase their work\, and hopefully leaves you feeling inspired for Spring\, the future\, and how beautiful change can be…”

SUMMARY:The Fight For Women’s Rights in Summerstown: Guided Walk
DESCRIPTION:‘The Corruganza Boxmakers’ were a group of 44 courageous young women\, largely uneducated who in the face of a savage pay cut went on strike at a cardboard box factory in south west London in 1908. \nThey were supported and encouraged by trade union pioneer Mary Macarthur. Their action paved the way for much higher profile events like the Cradley Heath Chainmakers and the Bermondsey Uprising\, all in the frontline of the struggle for women’s rights in the workplace. Its an inspirational story that deserves a wider audience and for that reason we will be acknowledging it next year with the placing of a blue plaque. \nThe Walk which covers the site of the box factory in a fascinating part of Earlsfield between Wimbledon Stadium and the River Wandle takes in key locations relating to industries which employed women and passes some of the homes where they lived. \nThis walk is provided free to the public as part of London Unseen\, thanks to funding from the Mayor of London’s Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
