SUMMARY:The British Mosque: An Architectural and Social History
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a presentation of Shahed Saleem latest book\, the first overview of Muslim architecture in Britain from the earliest examples in the late 19th century\, to mosques being built today. \n \nThe analysis focuses on the way in which the mosque as a new cultural and architectural form has become embedded into the existing urban fabric of Britain’s towns and cities\, and how this new building type has then impacted its urban landscape\, socially\, culturally and architecturally. As an architect\, researcher and lecturer living and working in East London\, Saleem focuses on community architecture and places of worship. Not content with lumping in a couple of minarets and being done with it\, Saleem believes we can use mosque architecture to merge elements of British and Muslim identity\, so he’s been speaking to and making harmonious designs that connect with both Muslim communities and their surroundings. He says: “We do have to generate our own architectural language which reflects our European Muslim identity.” \nWe are thankful to the Barakat Trust and The Pakistan Society for their support. SUMMARY:Glittering Tales: Dancing for Rajahs\, Nawabs\, and the Men of The Raj
DESCRIPTION:Join prominent artists Dr Swarnamalya Ganesh and Chitra Sundaram as they explore Sadir\, the historic precursor to the classical Indian dance style of Bharatanatyam. \nAsia House is delighted to collaborate with Akademi as it launches the first of its dance dialogue series with Dr Swarnamalya Ganesh and her debut to a London audience. The noted Bharatanatyam artist and actor will be joined by Chitra Sundaram\, a prominent figure in the UK dance community\, as curator of the evening. They will explore the narratives\, the women\, and the repertoire of ‘Sadir Āttam’: the command performance of the 17th to the early 20th century that was presented in durbars and salons for royalty\, aristocracy and officers of The Raj. \n\n \nThis event presents the her-story of the Sadir dancer; her repertoire and her reputation as an articulate\, charming and sophisticated performer. Swarnamalya will share the experiences of seeking out hereditary dancers; piecing together closely guarded anecdotes and repertoire pieces. Nearly eighty-five years after Sadir disappearing into Bharatanatyam\, we begin to embrace both\, joining the discourse of multiple histories. Over the years\, she has anchored several shows\, acted in films across various languages and performed on many stages all over the world. She has a Masters in Bharatanatyam and PhD in Dance History from Madras University. \nChitra Sundaram is a dance/theatre choreographer\, Bharatanatyam performer\, mentor and educator. Her research and teaching interests include the problems and potential of classical forms in cross-cultural and intergenerational transmission of narratives. Chitra was the trustee of Akademi\, and currently sits on the board of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing. SUMMARY:Raise the Roof Choir Spring Term
DESCRIPTION:Raise the Roof is a Community Choir with a difference – we are the Horniman Museum’s Community Choir. This means that as well as singing a diverse and dynamic repertoire of beautiful vocal music\, Raise The Roof’s repertoire also features songs that accompany the changing exhibitions in the Museum\, from rivers to Romania\, peacetime to plant life\, and textiles to taxidermy! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRaise the Roof is a Natural Voice Choir and all are welcome. There are no auditions\, we learn by ear and sing from the soles of our feet! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur Spring term runs from January 9th – March 26th 2020. Please note that there is no session on 13th February. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDrop-in sessions are £10 or £5 for students. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe are led by Musical Director Kirsty Martin.

SUMMARY:Friday Night Healing - Cacao\, Gongs & Icaros
DESCRIPTION:Two hours of total bliss to relax you and unwind from your week.\nFriday night is the perfect time for healing. You can let go of stress or anxiety which can build up over the week and start your weekend calm\, refreshed and hangover free!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur events are suitable for everybody and we welcome first timers – all will be explained. We will begin by drinking cacao from the Sacred Valley in Peru\, and setting our intentions. A short meditation to ground ourselves then 90 minutes of sound healing using gongs\, Tibetan bowls\, koshi chimes\, chacapa leaves from the jungle and icaros. Icaros are healing songs from the Amazon in the ancient shamanic languages of shipibo and quechua. \nThis is a large venue with space for 60 people to lay comfortably. Wear comfortable clothes and we ask you do not consume any alcohol prior to the event. We have 60 yoga mats but please bring blankets and cushions – we want you to be as cosy as possible. \nPlease arrive 15 minutes before (7.45pm) so you can settle in and get comfortable.

DESCRIPTION:Behind Closed Doors is an online scratch night showcasing the work of writers of underrepresented genders\, who are exploring themes of sex\, bodies and intimacy in their work.\nFeaturing rehearsed readings of four short plays\, this night will be asking how meaningful conversations around sex have opened up – are we more liberated? Or just finding new ways to take issues with our bodies? And how has the pandemic changed the way we date? \nA lot of people also still aren’t being invited to take part in this conversation around sex and bodies\, and the plays included in Behind Closed Doors will mainly look at how sex interacts with other areas of identity\, including how sex and non-Western cultures co-exist\, and how sex is discussed in non-heteronormative relationships. \nFilmed at Theatre Deli\, the night will be streamed straight to your living room as part of Theatre Deli’s LiveFromDeli programme. So you can join us online at 7:30 pm on 16 November for the launch night of Behind Closed Doors\, and the plays will be available to watch on-demand until 7 December. Ninawà Pai da Mata and Director Patrick Belem will introduce the film and host a Q & A. \n\n\n\nFilm Synopsis: \n\n\n\nIn the heart of the Amazon Rainforest\, the Kaxinawá people (self-claimed Huni Kuin\, “true people”) are experiencing their cultural and spiritual renaissance. After decades of slavery during the rubber plantation era\, they were captured in the forests with dogs\, marked with numbers and forbidden to speak their language and live their culture. It took more than 20 years of hard work\, prayers\, and cultural strengthening undertaken by the spiritual leader Ninawá Pai da Mata so that his people could return to their ancestral way of life. \n\n\n\nIn this feature film\, we are taken by the villagers to the cacophony of the forest\, the beauty and the simplicity of everyday life\, the enchantments of the forest medicines and the effort of what it takes for a tribe to rediscover themselves in communion with nature. Since he started travelling in 2013\, he quickly became known as one of the original rockstars from the forest and has touched and inspired many people worldwide.  \n\n\n\nHe is a gifted musician and captivates people wherever he goes with his charisma and power and sharing his message of nature\, love and humility. He has appeared at the Glastonbury Festival and Medicine Festival in the UK and is one of the foremost spiritual leaders of the annual Aniwa gathering in the USA. DESCRIPTION:During Pride 2023\, the Borough\, home to the highest proportion of London’s LGBTQ+ community\, will host a panel discussion exploring the complex relationship between faith and sexuality. \n\n\n\nHeld at St John’s Waterloo\, one of London’s most inclusive Churches\, this panel discussion aims to challenge the common perception that faith and homosexuality are incompatible and to explore ways to bridge the gap. \n\n\n\nHosted by Canon Giles Goddard from St John’s (who is also the former Chair of Inclusive Church)\, panellists include Asifa Lahore (Britain’s first out Muslim drag queen)\, Ruby Almeida (Catholic LGBTQ+ rights campaigner)\, Reverend Nathan Jones. \n\n\n\n(Senior Minister at Oasis Church Waterloo)\, Tom Ana (Interfaith Campaigner & Events Manager at London LGBTQ+ Centre) and Hava Mirviss-Carvajal (Head of Joy at Queer Yeshiva). \n\n\n\nDiscussion topics will include individual recollections of prejudice\, the challenges around cohesion between the LGBTQ+ and faith communities\, how panellists are encouraged by their faith\, and what they might say to those who have had negative experiences. \n\n\n\nThe event is the latest in the ‘Waterloo – Behind the Scenes’ debate series\, which facilitates challenging conversations to help build a better future for those who live\, work and play in the area.
