SUMMARY:Why Ash Regan’s ‘Unbuyable’ bill is right for Scotland: Unravelling the myths around the Nordic Model
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted that Ash Regan\, independent MSP for Edinburgh Eastern\, will be joining us on Sunday\, 11 January for a webinar to discuss her Unbuyable bill. The bill seeks to lessen the harms from prostitution in Scotland through a holistic approach known as the Nordic Model. \nAsh will be joined by Venessa\, a survivor of the Scottish sex industry and Heli St Luce. The seminar will be introduced and chaired by Emily Husain. \nFollowing a short presentation by each speaker\, our panel will answer your questions\, which you can submit during the seminar or in advance by email. \nThe Unbuyable bill\, officially the Prostitution\, Offences and Support (Scotland) Bill\, reflects the Nordic Model approach to prostitution\, first introduced in Sweden in 1999. Here selling of sex by individual women is decriminalised\, but the buying of sexual services becomes a criminal offence. Crucially\, the Unbuyable bill also provides extensive support services for those wishing to exit prostitution and will clear any previous convictions a woman may have for soliciting. \nUnfortunately\, there are many myths around the Nordic model\, often circulated by organisations purporting to act in the best interests of sex workers. Some of these take the form of bad faith arguments\, others rely on falsifiable data\, while others still infantilise men or romanticise what is in reality a dangerous and unromantic activity. \nWhatever your views on the Unbuyable bill\, please join us for what will be an interesting and informative webinar. \nThe webinar is free\, but you need to register in advance. \nWebinar Details\nThis webinar will be hosted in Zoom and is expected to last about 90 minutes. We will email registered attendees shortly before the event with details of how to join. If you can’t see the email\, please check your spam folders. \nQuestions\nThere will be an option to submit questions during the event\, but you are welcome to email in advance any questions you would like our panellists to consider. Please put ‘Webinar Question’ in the subject line and email it to info@nordicmodelnow.org. Time constraints mean\, however\, that we will be limited in how many questions we can address. \nThis is a mixed event\nThis event is open to everyone. The event will include discussion of some difficult issues\, including male violence to women and children. We ask everyone\, but particularly men\, to be mindful of this and how members of the audience may find this triggering because it resonates with their own experiences of male violence. We ask everyone to be open and respectful. \nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/why-ash-regans-unbuyable-bill-is-right-for-scotland-tickets-1972612307513

SUMMARY:Utoya - UK Premiere
DESCRIPTION:July 2011. On the Norwegian island of Utoya\, a far-right terrorist has just massacred sixty-nine innocent students attending a socialist Summer Camp. \nGunnar and Malin have sent their daughter to the island and desperately seek contact. On the farm next door to the perpetrators\, Petter and Inga realise their suspicions about him are well founded. At Central Command\, Alf and Unni must decide on the best course of action in response to the attack. \nA searing reflection on the domestic effects of societal trauma\, Utoya offers a timely reminder of the threat of far-right extremism\, inviting us to consider how tragedy can both bind people together and pull them further apart. This production is a UK Premiere from leading Italian writer Edoardo Erba.

SUMMARY:Can We Be Great Again? Why a dangerous world needs Britain.
DESCRIPTION:Former Foreign Secretary Sir Jeremy Hunt MP joins us on Friday 6 June to discuss his new book about Britain’s place in the world in the century ahead.\nThis event is free to attend but booking is essential via our website. \nBritain has been through a difficult period since the global financial crisis\, leading many to conclude the country is doomed to inevitable decline. But Jeremy Hunt\, who was at the top of government as both Foreign Secretary and Chancellor\, disagrees. In his new book: Can We Be Great Again?\, he sets out to rebut those who think Britain is no longer capable of shaping the world we live in. \nWith the election of President Trump\, a world that was already becoming more dangerous has also become more unpredictable. But when it comes to the big challenges facing the world – whether on European security\, the future of democracy\, migration\, trade and climate – the UK remains one of the most influential countries and should\, Hunt says\, use that influence wisely. Hunt does not shy away from the UK’s weaknesses but argues that they should be considered in perspective and without underestimating this country’s many strengths.

SUMMARY:Mark Thomas: Gaffa Tapes
DESCRIPTION:Following a recent step towards theatre in his last few shows\, Mark Thomas is back to his finest stand-up form and anti-Tory sentiment in Gaffa Tapes as he takes his tour to the Leicester Square Theatre! \nMark’s now famous mix of standup\, theatre\, journalism and the odd bout of performance art has made him one of our oldest surviving alternative comics. Often referred to as the ‘godfather of political comedy’ (among many other things)\, Mark has been performing comedy for nearly 40 years. \nIf you don’t know what Mark does\, ask your parents. In his time\, he has won 8 awards for performing\, 3 for human rights work… and one he invented for himself. He has made six series of the Mark Thomas Comedy Product and 3 Dispatches for Channel 4\, made five series of the Manifesto for Radio 4\, written five books and 4 play scripts\, curated and authored two art exhibitions with artist Tracey Moberly and was commissioned to write a show for the Royal Opera House. He has forced a politician to resign\, changed laws on tax and protest\, become the Guinness Book of Records world record holder for a number of protests in 24 hours\, taken the police to court three times and won (the fourth is in the pipeline)\, walked the length of the Israeli Wall in the West Bank (that’s 724km)\, and generally mucked about trying to have fun and upset (shall we say) the right people.

The pertinent question is: Is war a necessary evil or an organised crime to kill our human species? Either way\, war kills people\, bringing untold suffering and misery. Also\, it’s a waste of vital resources that can be utilised for healthcare\, education\, jobs and boosting the economy’s growth. If the latter argument is valid\, then can we replace war by implementing a Culture of Peace?

SUMMARY:Václav Havel European Dialogues: The  Meaning of Central Europe in Today's World by Timothy Garton Ash
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special collaborative event hosted by SSEES and the Czech Center London\, marking the launch of the new Research Center for the Study of Places\, Identities\, and Memories (PIMs). This event celebrates the inauguration of PIMs and is part of the annual Václav Havel European Dialogues\, a global series of discussions inspired by Havel’s enduring legacy. \nThe event will feature a keynote address by Timothy Garton Ash (University of Oxford)\, who will explore the evolving meanings of Central Europe. This theme resonates deeply with Václav Havel’s intellectual legacy. Where does Central Europe stand in the contemporary world and politics\, and what does it represent today? Garton Ash will delve into the diverse interpretations of Central Europe throughout history and culture\, its varied and debated uses and its constant search for its “other”. He will also reflect on Central Europe’s significance in today’s increasingly polarized global landscape\, with particular emphasis on the impact of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. This discussion promises to offer profound insights into the identities of a diverse region and its role in shaping the future of Europe and beyond. \nJessie Barton Hronešová will moderate the event and will feature an esteemed panel of speakers\, including Richard Mole\, director of SSEES\, and a word of welcome by Přemysl Pela\, the director of the Czech Center in London\, as well as Pawel Bukowski\, co-director-of-the-new Research Center for the Study of Places\, Identities\, and Memories (PIMs).\n\nTimothy Garton Ash is a distinguished British historian\, political writer\, and commentator\, and he is celebrated for his extensive work on the contemporary history of Europe in general and Central and Eastern Europe in particular. He has authored eleven influential books on the ‘history of the present’\, documenting the profound transformations across Europe since 1989. Notable among these are The Magic Lantern: The Revolution of ’89 Witnessed in Warsaw\, Budapest\, Berlin\, and Prague (1990)\, In Europe’s Name: Germany and the Divided Continent (1993)\, The File: A Personal History (1997)\, History of the Present: Essays\, Sketches and Despatches from Europe in the 1990s (2000)\, Free World (2004)\, Free Speech: Ten Principles for a Connected World (2016)\, and his most recent work\, Homelands: A Personal History of Europe – now translated into 24 languages. These works have become essential for anyone interested in European history and politics. He is a Professor Emeritus of European Studies at the University of Oxford and a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. A prolific contributor to leading international publications like The Guardian and The New York Review of Books\, his work continues to shape debates on European identity\, democracy\, and the challenges posed by authoritarianism in today’s world. He also runs his substack with weekly essays called History of the Present.

SUMMARY:The Right to Protest: A Cumberland Lodge London Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation about our right to protest\, and its evolving role in shaping a better future. Protest is recognised not only as a human right\, but also as a powerful catalyst for change. Young people\, historically at the forefront of activism\, continue to engage in protests on issues such as the climate crisis\, social inequalities\, and international conflicts. \nHowever\, recent government legislation\, including the Policing Act 2022 and the Public Order Act 2023\, new forms of technology and surveillance\, and increasingly dispersed centres of power\, are changing how we think about dissent\, and what is possible to achieve. \nThe 2024 Cumberland Lodge London Dialogue will explore this evolving landscape of protest in the 21st century\, deciphering what these changes may mean for all of us. A panel of research\, student\, and activist voices\, chaired by The Rt Hon the Baroness Usha Prashar\, will debate the new dynamics of protest\, and the impact of new government legislation. \nOur speakers will include Dr Daniella Lock (University of Oxford) and Jodie Beck (Liberty)\, with further details to be announced. \n  \n14 May 2024 from 6:30-8:30pm at Goodenough College\, London \n  \nTickets: £10 (£5 concessions) including light refreshments \n  \nVisit cumberlandlodge.ac.uk/events to book

SUMMARY:Václav Havel European Dialogues 2023
DESCRIPTION:The Czech Centre\, together with the Cardiff University\, Oxford University and UCL\, and in collaboration with the Václav Havel Library\, organises the second annual symposium celebrating the legacy of Václav Havel. Starting in Cardiff on 10th of October\, the event will then move to Oxford on 11th October and finish at London’s UCL on 12th of October. \nFollowing a word of welcome from Přemysl Pela (Czech Centre London) we feature a discussion with celebrated Czech author Jáchym Topol\, author of i.a. A Sensitive Person (Eng. trans.\, Yale\, 2023); Angel Station (Eng. trans.\, Dalkey Archive\, 2017); The Devil’s Workshop (Eng. trans.\, Portobello\, 2013); Gargling With Tar (Eng. trans.\, Portobello\, 2010); and City/Sister/Silver (Eng. trans. Catbird\, 2000)\, who will talk about practicing creative literature in the final years of Czechoslovak Communism and the early years thereafter. \nFollowed by a roundtable discussion: \n‘Gaming the System: Language\, Conformism\, and Breaking Conventions\, From Václav Havel’s Absurdism to the Age of X’ \n2023 marks the 60th anniversary of The Garden Party\, one of Havel’s most famous plays. Often understood as an Absurdist critique of modern bureaucracy\, the play is also a tale about an ambitious young man who becomes a master of ‘gaming the system’. Havel’s protagonist Hugo thus embodies a paradox: he shows the extraordinary social pressure placed on people to conform to social expectations if they are to get ahead in life\, but he simultaneously demonstrates the enormous creativity through which they find ways to ‘game the system’ and break the rules. This round-table discussion will explore this curious dynamic of conformism and unconventionality\, of obedience and rule-bending\, of socialization and sabotage\, and will consider how far Havel’s mid-20th-century example of formalized bureaucratic communication (and the implicit parallel to authoritarian power structures) holds for early 21st-century culture and in particular for the ways social media have changed the way we interact for better and for ill. \nDiscussants: \nTim Beasley-Murray is Associate Professor of European thought and Culture at UCL and works on literature\, politics and ideas in English\, French\, German and sometimes Czech and Slovak. He has written a book on games (and how they can be serious) that will come out later this year. \nBarbara Day arrived as a student in Prague in 1965\, just in time to see the original productions of Havel’s plays and to experience the great surge of theatre activity. She maintained her connections with Czechoslovakia through the years of the Soviet occupation and consequent ‘Normalisation’. In 1985 she created the Bristol Czech Fest and the same year began to work with the ‘underground university’\, through the Oxford-based Jan Hus Educational Foundation. In 1999 she published The Velvet Philosophers and in 2019 Trial by Theatre: Reports on the Czech Drama. \nErin Plunkett is Senior Lecturer in Philosophy and Religious Studies at the University of Hertfordshire. She is co-editor with Ivan Chvatík of the Selected Writings of Jan Patočka: Care for the Soul (Bloomsbury\, 2022)\, and author of A Philosophy of the Essay: Scepticism\, Experience and Style (Bloomsbury\, 2020). \nDavid S. Danaher is a Professor of and Program Head for Slavic Studies in the Department of German\, Nordic\, and Slavic at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His two most recent books are Reading Václav Havel (University of Toronto Press\, 2015) and\, co-edited with Kieran Williams\, Václav Havel’s Meanings: His Key Words\, Their Context and Legacy (Karolinum Press and University of Chicago Press\, forthcoming 2023). He has taught a monograph course on Havel’s writing to undergraduates from all disciplines since 2002. \nModerator: \nPeter Zusi\, Associate Professor of Czech and Comparative Literature\, UCL. \nThe roundtable discussion will be followed by a wine reception. \nThe 2023 Václav Havel European Dialogues are supported by the Sekyra Foundation and are an initiative of the Václav Havel Library. \n  \nRegistration: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/vaclav-havel-european-dialogues-2023-tickets-719670131737?aff=oddtdtcreator

SUMMARY:Going Deutsch
DESCRIPTION:Should you ever go back to someone\, or something\, that almost destroyed you? What if they’re sorry? What if they say they’ve changed? What if they’re offering an EU passport? \n\n\n\nFollowing a bereavement\, Brexit and a bad break-up\, Anna decides to make some changes. When Anna suggested getting back with her ex\, her friends were appalled\,  and to her surprise\, her family felt very much the same way when she jumped into bed with Germany. \n\n\n\nIn ‘Going Deutsch’ Anna dates the country offering her citizenship despite taking the lives (and passports) of so many who came before her. Should she get back with Germany? Can they get past their history? Could they ever make it work? \n\n\n\nGoing Deutsch is a comedic show about relationships\, inherited trauma and how much the past shapes the future. \n\n\n\n“Anna’s storytelling\, stagecraft and wizardry at engaging her audience was utterly superb” – Mag North“Brilliantly executed” – Louder than War

SUMMARY:Charles I and the Civil Wars: The World Turned Upside Down
DESCRIPTION:At 2 pm\, on Tuesday 30 January 1649\, King Charles I stepped onto a wooden scaffold outside Whitehall’s Banqueting House\, knelt in front of thousands of spectators and was publicly beheaded as a traitor. It was the brutal climax of years of civil war\, which had seen tens of thousands of people lose their lives and livelihoods as the kingdoms of England\, Wales\, Scotland and Ireland were plunged into chaos. \nIn this fascinating collaboration with the Museum of London Docklands and HistFest\, bestselling authors Jessie Childs and Leanda de Lisle\, and critically acclaimed playwright and history teacher Thabo Stuck will explore the complex events that led to the fateful moment of Charles’s execution. From the sweeping history of the civil wars and the human stories of debates\, battles and sieges to the mood within the royal court\, the character of Charles I himself\, the resilience of his wife Henrietta Maria\, and the decade-long republican rule that followed. \nIncluding music from Thabo Stuck’s critically acclaimed play\, #50Days\, a panel discussion and immersive re-enactment from the English Civil War Society\, discover the realities of a world turned upside down. There will be an opportunity to purchase the authors’ books at the end of the talk. \nThere are also digital tickets available to watch a livestream of the event. \n  \nAbout \nThabo Stuck is a history teacher from London and the creator and writer of #50Days. #50Days\, Thabo’s debut writing project\, is a Grime Musical that tells the story of the period that leads up to the outbreak of the 17th Century British Civil Wars. Using Grime music\, this show gives underrepresented Brits a voice in telling the story of one of the most integral but often misunderstood narratives of our nation. Described by The Independent as ‘a hurtling exploration of politics and revolution’. \nJessie Childs is an award-winning author\, historian and broadcaster. Her first book\, Henry VIII’s Last Victim\, won the Elizabeth Longford Prize for Historical Biography\, and her second\, God’s Traitors\, won the PEN Hessell-Tiltman Prize for History. Her third book\, The Siege of Loyalty House: A Civil War Story\, was published in May and hailed by Simon Schama as ‘almost Tolstoyan in its emotional intelligence and literary power’. Jessie reviews for many papers\, including the Sunday Times\, Guardian and London Review of Books\, and her TV contributions include the BAFTA-nominated Elizabeth I’s Secret Agents (BBC 2 & PBS) and two BBC series on Charles I. \nLeanda de Lisle is the author of the bestselling Tudor and Stuart history praised for meticulous research as well as strong narratives. She has a Masters degree in history from Oxford University. TUDOR\, her biography of the Tudor family 1437-1603\, was a top ten Sunday Times bestseller\, BBC History book of the year\, Daily Telegraph book of the year\, and History Today book of the year. THE SISTERS WHO WOULD BE QUEEN; THE TRAGEDY OF MARY\, KATHERINE AND LADY JANE GREY\, was a New York Times best seller and is the inspiration for Phillippa Gregory’s 2017 novel THE LAST TUDOR as well as Elizabeth Fremantle’s Sisters of Treason. WHITE KING\, a biography of the doomed Charles I\, was the winner of the 2018 Historical Writers Association non-fiction crown. Her latest\, on Henrietta Maria\, is a revisionist biography of a reviled queen and a Times and Sunday Times book of the year. \n  \nHistFest is an innovative history festival and events company\, which produces online and in-person events and courses for global audiences. \nThe English Civil War Society bring history to life through the authentic re-creation of 17th-century military and civil life\, stimulating interest in the turbulent period in British history when the country was torn apart by civil war. \n

SUMMARY:Velvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\, Syria
DESCRIPTION:With Velvet Society\, we strive to empower Syrian women and culture: it is an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and Artist Heba Al-Akkad. The exhibition is in conjunction with Refugee Week. We have also organised a series of interactive events that will complement the exhibition\, including two workshops\, one artist-led tour of the exhibition\, one live panel and one webinar.\n. \n\n\n\nAbout The Exhibition\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery is honoured to present Velvet Society\, an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and artist Heba Al-Akkad. The 90s fashion collection of Mardini\, emanating from the wealthy and powerful class of the self-styled “velvet society” prominent in 90s Syria\, will be juxtaposed with a range of vibrant artworks made in fabric and fibre by Heba Al-Akkad. A powerful dialogue will be established between these collections\, to expose a Damascus of the 90s dominated by complexes of glamour and power\, at once joyful yet troubled\, wielded both by and against the women in question.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition centres itself around the stories of these two Syrian Muslim women. From differing backgrounds\, they\, as refugees from the Syrian uprising\, struck up a friendship founded on a mutual interest in creativity within visual arts. Viewers will bear witness to their testimonies of liberation from religious and patriarchal violence. Photographs\, art objects and items of fashion are displayed to invigorate a commentary on feminism\, female freedom and Syrian history\, linked by the medium of textiles.\n\n\n\n\n\nProf. Janis Jefferies\, Emeritus Professor at Goldsmiths University\, has explained the salience of clothes in this exhibition:\n\n\n\n\nClothing carries powerful signs of non-verbal communication. It covers us\, it represents individual identities that can be played with\, disrupted and challenge what we do in our everyday lives\, both physically and sexually. If we are displaced or exiled from our homes or driven out by war\, what we wear changes. In this exhibition we see how two Muslim women become friends. They connect through art\, through their different relationship with material; a veil is worn\, designer labels are displayed. Photographs act as documents; new objects are made.\n\n\n\n\nBy bringing these stories to UK audiences in a seductive yet forceful exhibition\, fashion devotees and art lovers alike will explore the political nature of clothing\, how it shapes the representation of women in fashion\, society and art. Beliefs about Middle Eastern women will be challenged and a broader and richer recent Syrian history will emerge.\n\n\n\n\n\nHeba Al-Akkad was born in Damascus in 1981. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University 2006. She now lives and works in Gothenburg\, Sweden\, where she has been able to escape the cycle of familial violence and abuse that she suffered since girlhood. She has had solo shows across Europe and the Middle East. Litehouse Gallery has commissioned work from Al-Akkad on themes of self-identity and dress.\n\n\n\n\n\nRaghad Mardini\, on the other hand\, found herself inducted into the “velvet society”\, a figurative term for a class involved in high business and power in Syria during the 90s. Photographs from Mardini’s archive will give visual evidence of the velvet society\, which\, after many years of negotiating its excesses and its alienating demands\, she finally decided to reject. These photographs will be shown alongside a fashion collection supplied by western designers including Dior\, Versace\, Mugler\, Chanel\, Galliano\, YSL\, Alaia as well as Syrian designer Nicola Khoury\, all of which Mardini wore during her time within the velvet society. The exhibition will not just highlight the vibrancy of those times and the relentless glamour demanded in the velvet society\, but will look deeper into how female sexuality was weaponised in the game of politics and money.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is an exhibition about how\, in 90s Damascus\, fabric dazzled\, lured\, sheltered\, bound\, concealed\, and\, as time wore on\, changed.\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nProgramme of Events\n\n\n\n\nAlongside the exhibition\, we are organising a series of events ranging from workshops and live panels. SUMMARY:Cockney Conversations Month 2022: 3rd March – 4th April 2022
DESCRIPTION:The first Cockney Conversations Month* runs from Thursday 3rd March- Monday 4th April 2022 and kicks off with six online discussions on the significance of Cockney cultural heritage and how it adapted to physical\, social and cultural changes in the East End. \nWhat are Cockney Cultures?\nThe Cockney identity is under threat from bias\, prejudice and ignorance. However\, history shows how Cockney is an identity based on positive\, inclusive values. We celebrate what it means to be Cockney today\, for all creeds and races\, from its East End heartland and beyond\, through to the global Cockney diaspora. Cockney Cultures encourages greater self-belief\, confidence\, and pride in who Cockneys are\, what they stand for\, and how they can best work together to face their shared future. \nCockney Cultures is asking interested individuals\, cultural and community groups\, public bodies and venues to work with us through support\, resourcing and long-term collaboration. The idea grew out of a public debate held in March 2021 called ‘Can Cockney Be Saved?’ led by Andy Green from Grow Social Capital CIC. Since then\, Andy and Saif Osmani from the Bengali East End Heritage Society joined heads to kickstart the initiative to celebrate the culture of London’s working-class communities.\nCome along and join us in the debates and discussions! \nSo what’s in store for Cockney Conversations Month 2022? \nOnline discussions and debates (every 45 minutes): \n1) ‘Is Cockney dying?’\, Thursday 3rd March 2022 @ midnight (GMT): guest academic sociolinguists\, cultural commentators and questions from the audience. BOOKING LINK: https://iscockneydying.eventbrite.com \n2) ‘The Story of Cockney in 50 Objects’\, Thursday 10th March 2022 @ midnight (GMT): a Cockney ‘Room 101’ where visitors can recommend their top 50 cultural objects. BOOKING LINK: https://50cockneyobjects.eventbrite.com \n3) ‘Is Essex Cockney?’\, Thursday 17th March 2022 @ midnight (GMT): sharing academic sociolinguistic studies on Cockney diaspora. BOOKING LINK: https://isessexcockney.eventbrite.com \n4) ‘Cockney-Bengali rhyming slang: how can Cockney revivalists learn from the Sylheti-Bengali Language Movement?’\, Thursday 24th March 2022 @ midnight (GMT): BOOKING LINK: https://cockneybengali.eventbrite.com \n5) ‘You havin’ a larf? Is there such a thing as Cockney humour?’\, Thursday 31st March 2022 @ midnight (GMT)? BOOKING LINK: https://cockneyhumour.eventbrite.com \n6) ‘Cockneycide – Is there prejudice against regional accents?’\, Monday 4th April 2022 @ midnight (GMT): a panel of cultural commentators and open discussions. SUMMARY:Comedy Shows - Shazia Mirza: Coconut
DESCRIPTION:https://youtu.be/30YzlF5N5rk \nComedy Shows with Award-winning Shazia Mirza is taking on the burning (and infectious) issues of our time in her latest show.\n“I wrote this show two years ago. It was relevant\, funny\, timely\, and I knew every single bit of it. Then one day in March\, the world ended. I had nothing to do\, nowhere to go\, and I did what everyone else was doing. I sat on the settee in my pyjamas\, stuffing myself with Nutella whilst watching documentaries on Ted Bundy. I thought I’d better change my show and make it more relevant: no one cares about reality TV\, celebrity and me starving in a jungle; let’s get real. \nPeople have been struggling to get eggs these past 12 months. Prince Harry told The Queen to do one\, Meghan Markle turned into the new Yoko Ono\, and a few more black people were on ITV. But\, then\, things got serious\, and I have to make some jokes on this while I’m playing to sell-out crowds of 100 people in 3000 seater stadiums”. \nRecently seen back to absolute basics in Channel 4’s Celebrity Island with Bear Grylls\, taking a speedy turn (2.07 seconds to be exact) in BBC2’s Top Gear and temporarily enjoying the high life in Channel 4’s Travel Man – 48 Hours In… Côte d’Azur\, Shazia has also guested on ITV’s Jonathan Ross and Loose Women\, BBC1’s The One Show\, and is a regular panellist on Channel 5’s The Wright Stuff. \nOur prices are subject to demand\, so book early to guarantee seats at the best price. \n

SUMMARY:Benin City\, Burning
DESCRIPTION:In February 1897\, British troops launched a ‘Punitive Expedition’ on the Kingdom of Benin\, swiftly and violently destroying much of Benin City and pillaging thousands of royal artworks and sacred objects. The Edo people have requested these artefacts back but most of the museums have staunchly refused. \nPoet Inua Ellams\, who hails from Benin City in Nigeria\, will read his poem sequence Fuck/Empire\, about one such artefact\, a tusk\, now housed at the Manchester Museum. He will then be joined by Nigerian artist Victor Ehikhamenor\, Pitt Rivers Museum Curator and author of The Brutish Museums Dan Hicks and Manchester Museum Director Esme Ward in conversation with writer and broadcaster Afua Hirsch to discuss the history\, the legacy and the thorny issue of restitution. \nIn partnership with Penned in the Margins. \n— \nVictor Ehikhamenor is an artist\, photographer\, and writer born in Edo State\, Nigeria\, whose politically motivated works are influenced by the duality of African traditional religion and the interception of Western beliefs\, memories and nostalgia. His award-winning research focuses on the restitution of African cultural heritage from Euro-American collections\, focusing on the place of ideas of cultural whiteness in ongoing histories of colonial violence. His most recent book is The Brutish Museums. \nAfua Hirsch is a writer\, broadcaster and former barrister. She is a columnist for The Guardian\, writes for magazines including VOGUE\, Time and National Geographic and her book Brit(ish): On Race\, Identity and Belonging was a Sunday Times bestseller. Her documentaries have included African Artand Enslaved and she has worked in development in West Africa and in international human rights law at the bar. \nEsme Ward is Director of Manchester Museum and the first woman to hold the role in its 125 year history. Prior to this\, she was Head of Learning Engagement at Manchester Museum and the Whitworth. SUMMARY:Justin Edgar: Reasonable Adjustment exhibition - Online exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Please click on the website link to enter this Online Exhibition. In the late 1980s and early 1990s\, disabled activists named Reasonable Adjustment (RAD) fought Margaret Thatcher’s right-wing government and an oppressive medical establishment to gain rights. Regarded as terrorists by some and freedom fighters by others\, their actions included a shooting by blind activists during a live BBC TV broadcast and the bombing of Euston Underground station in protest at a lack of accessible transport. \nIn this exhibition\, Justin Edgar showcases artefacts he has collected over 30 years which document the Reasonable Adjustment movement\, including photographs he took as an art student during the height of their activity in the early 1990’s. The exhibition includes posters\, artefacts and a 1991 television documentary on Reasonable Adjustment previously thought lost\, but recently rediscovered. In the light of nine years of austerity cuts to disabled people\, some might say it’s as though RAD never happened at all. \nJustin Edgar is a Director of 104 Films and one of the UK’s leading Disabled film producers. The Reasonable Adjustment exhibition premiered in January 2020 at the Art House in Wakefield\, but the physical tour has been suspended.
