SUMMARY:SIAPA YANG BAWA MELAYU AKU PERGI ? (WHO TOOK MY MALAY AWAY?)
DESCRIPTION:Siapa Yang Bawa Melayu Aku Pergi? (Who Took My Malay Away?) is a lecture performance that was inspired by the creator’s early experiences of living in London and made with the knowledge of life as a Malay person who was born\, raised and educated in Singapore. This solo performance explores what it means to be Malay and what it then means to be Malay in Singapore. \n\n\n\nWhat begins simply as an attempt to reconnect with his culture – by sharing the disappearing traditional writing and reading system of the Malay Language\, Jawi – then becomes a deeper exploration of lost culture\, customs\, heritage and self.

SUMMARY:Velvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\, Syria
DESCRIPTION:With Velvet Society\, we strive to empower Syrian women and culture: it is an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and Artist Heba Al-Akkad. The exhibition is in conjunction with Refugee Week. We have also organised a series of interactive events that will complement the exhibition\, including two workshops\, one artist-led tour of the exhibition\, one live panel and one webinar.\n. \n\n\n\nAbout The Exhibition\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery is honoured to present Velvet Society\, an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and artist Heba Al-Akkad. The 90s fashion collection of Mardini\, emanating from the wealthy and powerful class of the self-styled “velvet society” prominent in 90s Syria\, will be juxtaposed with a range of vibrant artworks made in fabric and fibre by Heba Al-Akkad. A powerful dialogue will be established between these collections\, to expose a Damascus of the 90s dominated by complexes of glamour and power\, at once joyful yet troubled\, wielded both by and against the women in question.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition centres itself around the stories of these two Syrian Muslim women. From differing backgrounds\, they\, as refugees from the Syrian uprising\, struck up a friendship founded on a mutual interest in creativity within visual arts. Viewers will bear witness to their testimonies of liberation from religious and patriarchal violence. Photographs\, art objects and items of fashion are displayed to invigorate a commentary on feminism\, female freedom and Syrian history\, linked by the medium of textiles.\n\n\n\n\n\nProf. Janis Jefferies\, Emeritus Professor at Goldsmiths University\, has explained the salience of clothes in this exhibition:\n\n\n\n\nClothing carries powerful signs of non-verbal communication. It covers us\, it represents individual identities that can be played with\, disrupted and challenge what we do in our everyday lives\, both physically and sexually. If we are displaced or exiled from our homes or driven out by war\, what we wear changes. In this exhibition we see how two Muslim women become friends. They connect through art\, through their different relationship with material; a veil is worn\, designer labels are displayed. Photographs act as documents; new objects are made.\n\n\n\n\nBy bringing these stories to UK audiences in a seductive yet forceful exhibition\, fashion devotees and art lovers alike will explore the political nature of clothing\, how it shapes the representation of women in fashion\, society and art. Beliefs about Middle Eastern women will be challenged and a broader and richer recent Syrian history will emerge.\n\n\n\n\n\nHeba Al-Akkad was born in Damascus in 1981. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University 2006. She now lives and works in Gothenburg\, Sweden\, where she has been able to escape the cycle of familial violence and abuse that she suffered since girlhood. She has had solo shows across Europe and the Middle East. Litehouse Gallery has commissioned work from Al-Akkad on themes of self-identity and dress.\n\n\n\n\n\nRaghad Mardini\, on the other hand\, found herself inducted into the “velvet society”\, a figurative term for a class involved in high business and power in Syria during the 90s. Photographs from Mardini’s archive will give visual evidence of the velvet society\, which\, after many years of negotiating its excesses and its alienating demands\, she finally decided to reject. These photographs will be shown alongside a fashion collection supplied by western designers including Dior\, Versace\, Mugler\, Chanel\, Galliano\, YSL\, Alaia as well as Syrian designer Nicola Khoury\, all of which Mardini wore during her time within the velvet society. The exhibition will not just highlight the vibrancy of those times and the relentless glamour demanded in the velvet society\, but will look deeper into how female sexuality was weaponised in the game of politics and money.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is an exhibition about how\, in 90s Damascus\, fabric dazzled\, lured\, sheltered\, bound\, concealed\, and\, as time wore on\, changed.\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nProgramme of Events\n\n\n\n\nAlongside the exhibition\, we are organising a series of events ranging from workshops and live panels. Like the exhibition\, these events are completely free to attend and require pre-booking. Many Syrian artists who had fled to Lebanon were unable to continue their practice due to trauma and financial hardship. At ARA\, for a month\, they had bed\, board\, space\, freedom\, and all the materials needed to enable them to make art again. ARA also curated exhibitions and performances worldwide.\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nEmail info@litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\nWebsite www.litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\nOnline Shop www.litehousegalleryshop.co.uk/\n\n\n\n\n\nPhone +44 7833 700 984\n\n.\n\n\n\n\n\nQuick-links www.linktr.ee/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nInstagram www.instagram.com/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nFacebook www.facebook.com/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nTwitter www.twitter.com/Litehousegalery\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nExhibition Information\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nExhibition\n\n\n\n\n\nVelvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery\n\n\n\n\n\nwww.litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nVenue\n\n\n\n\n\nP21 Gallery (Kings Cross)\n\n\n\n\n\n21-27 Chalton Street\, London NW1 1JD\, UK\n\n\n\n\n\nwww.p21.gallery\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nDates\n\n\n\n\n\n23rd June – 23rd July\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nOpening Hours\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday\, Thursday & Friday: 12 – 6pm\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday: 12 – 8pm\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday: 12 – 4pm\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nEntry is free. No appointment necessary. SUMMARY:Cockney Conversations Month 2022: 3rd March – 4th April 2022
DESCRIPTION:The first Cockney Conversations Month* runs from Thursday 3rd March- Monday 4th April 2022 and kicks off with six online discussions on the significance of Cockney cultural heritage and how it adapted to physical\, social and cultural changes in the East End. \nWhat are Cockney Cultures?\nThe Cockney identity is under threat from bias\, prejudice and ignorance. However\, history shows how Cockney is an identity based on positive\, inclusive values. We celebrate what it means to be Cockney today\, for all creeds and races\, from its East End heartland and beyond\, through to the global Cockney diaspora. Cockney Cultures encourages greater self-belief\, confidence\, and pride in who Cockneys are\, what they stand for\, and how they can best work together to face their shared future. \nCockney Cultures is asking interested individuals\, cultural and community groups\, public bodies and venues to work with us through support\, resourcing and long-term collaboration. The idea grew out of a public debate held in March 2021 called ‘Can Cockney Be Saved?’ led by Andy Green from Grow Social Capital CIC. Since then\, Andy and Saif Osmani from the Bengali East End Heritage Society joined heads to kickstart the initiative to celebrate the culture of London’s working-class communities.\nCome along and join us in the debates and discussions! \nSo what’s in store for Cockney Conversations Month 2022? \nOnline discussions and debates (every 45 minutes): \n1) ‘Is Cockney dying?’\, Thursday 3rd March 2022 @ midnight (GMT): guest academic sociolinguists\, cultural commentators and questions from the audience. SUMMARY:Artist Launches London Exhibition In Support Of Children’s Cleft Charity
DESCRIPTION:Katie Manning\, artist\, and mother of three from Oxford\, is launching an art exhibition in March to raise awareness of cleft and Smile Train UK\, the international children’s cleft charity.\nThe exhibition titled ‘Portraits’ will run from 3rd – 13th March at The Brick Lane Gallery in Bethnal Green\, London. Katie’s hand-drawn collection will display 30 portraits of children born worldwide with a cleft. Some of the children shown in the exhibition have directly benefited from Smile Train’s free cleft surgery and comprehensive cleft care services\, allowing them to live whole and healthy lives. \nThe exhibition will be Katie’s first since she was a student at Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College\, where she studied Textile Art and Surface Decoration. The artist was inspired to embark on the artistic adventure following her family’s own experiences of clefts – her eldest daughter was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate\, and her husband was born with a unilateral cleft. \nA cleft is the most common facial difference globally\, affecting around 1 in 700 babies each year. However\, while supporting her daughter through cleft surgery and subsequent orthodontic work and speech therapy\, Katie noticed that there is still a lot of stigma and misunderstanding associated with a cleft. This often stems from a lack of awareness and knowledge of what a cleft is and how differently it can impact individuals and their families for entire lifetimes. \nIn a bid to tackle this issue\, last year\, Katie committed to hand-drawing 100 portraits of babies\, children and adults born with a cleft. Katie is now launching a ‘preview’ of some of her art\, hoping that it will help raise awareness and increase knowledge creatively and powerfully. \nKatie has also joined Smile Train UK’s Cleft Community Advisory Council\, using lived experience to advise on campaigns and activities and becoming a Smile Train UK ambassador to raise awareness for the charity. Katie is passionate about Smile Train’s work and has set up a dedicated Just Giving page in support of the charity. \nIn the UK\, cleft surgery is carried out within the first 12 months of a baby’s life by the National Health Service (NHS). However\, hundreds of thousands of children living in resource-poor communities worldwide are not as fortunate and do not have access to the lifesaving cleft treatment they desperately need. \nSmile Train uses a unique and sustainable model of empowering local medical professionals and hospitals with the tools they need to complete free surgeries and an entire programme of aftercare. Over the last 21 years\, the charity has supported safe and quality cleft care for 1.5+ million children and will continue to do so until every person in need of a cleft has access to the care they deserve. \nA selection of Katie’s collection will be on sale at The Brick Lane Gallery for a limited time. Entry to the exhibition is free\, and the portraits will be sold at the starting value of £125.00.

SUMMARY:Pan Talks: Film Night
DESCRIPTION:Join Pan Talks: Film Night for a chance to watch short films personally selected from the Guardian Documentaries archive by Guardian Documentaries’ Charlie Phillips and Lindsay Poulton. John Martin will join Pan Intercultural Arts’ Artistic Director in a Q&A section hosted by the BBC News presenter and Pan’s patron Reeta Chakrabarti and featuring some filmmakers. \nThe screening will be on Thursday 21st October at the Rio Cinema\, Dalston\, from 6 pm. \n“Our documentaries deal with some of the big social issues of the day\, and we’re excited to show them to an audience interested in how documentary can contribute to major social change” – Charlie Phillips\, Head of Video at The Guardian. \nPan Talks: Film Night will support Pan Intercultural Arts\, an organisation dedicated to exploring cultural diversity through the arts and how much work can inspire and implement social change. SUMMARY:Nature Walk: Chalk Streaming – Rivers Cray\, Darent and Thames
DESCRIPTION:This spring we invite you to walk the waterways of England\, navigating their gentle wildness alongside Sam Lee and special guest ecological pioneers.\nLeave your gadgets behind and spend a day chalk streaming together. \nLittle-known but quietly magnificent chalk streams are one of the UK’s natural wonders and ecological miracles. Despite all the environmental mistreatment they receive\, they continue to bubble up some of the finest waters in the land\, harbouring communities of life within and humans alongside. Their life-giving properties have shaped our nation\, inspired artists to create and conquerors to colonise. \nAs we walk we will take several moments en route to stop and explore the river together. We will share knowledge\, songs\, histories\, and return to the river the love that she has shown us humans over our millennia spent by her side. \nLittle-known but quietly magnificent chalk streams are one of the UK’s natural wonders and ecological miracles. SUMMARY:Grief Gathering In The Park with Sam Butler & David Harradine
DESCRIPTION:We’d like to invite you to take part in a small group conversation called a Grief Gathering. We’ll meet you at The Hub cafe in Victoria park\, and in small groups travel around the park together as the sun is going down; talking\, listening and learning about grief. This event is part of The Health Tree social prescribing project\, a partnership with St Margaret’s House. \nThis Grief Thing is a project which addresses the silence around grief and grieving. We’re living at a time when many people find death and grief – our own grief or other people’s – almost impossible to talk about. We don’t know what to say\, what to do\, or how to act. So we stay silent\, we pretend that grief doesn’t exist\, or we hide it. \nWe’re really keen to hear from all sorts of people about how easy or difficult they find it to talk about their own or other people’s grief. There is no obligation to talk\, you’re welcome to just sit and listen. \nThe conversation will be hosted by Fevered Sleep’s artistic directors Sam Butler & David Harradine. It will last approximately 90 minutes\, is free to attend\, takes place in Victoria Park and is open to everyone but booking is required. If you’d like to talk to us about your access needs or you have any other questions please contact us griefgatherings@feveredsleep.co.uk
