SUMMARY:Artist Launches London Exhibition In Support Of Children’s Cleft Charity
DESCRIPTION:Katie Manning\, artist\, and mother of three from Oxford\, is launching an art exhibition in March to raise awareness of cleft and Smile Train UK\, the international children’s cleft charity.\nThe exhibition titled ‘Portraits’ will run from 3rd – 13th March at The Brick Lane Gallery in Bethnal Green\, London. Katie’s hand-drawn collection will display 30 portraits of children born worldwide with a cleft. Some of the children shown in the exhibition have directly benefited from Smile Train’s free cleft surgery and comprehensive cleft care services\, allowing them to live whole and healthy lives. \nThe exhibition will be Katie’s first since she was a student at Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College\, where she studied Textile Art and Surface Decoration. The artist was inspired to embark on the artistic adventure following her family’s own experiences of clefts – her eldest daughter was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate\, and her husband was born with a unilateral cleft. \nA cleft is the most common facial difference globally\, affecting around 1 in 700 babies each year. However\, while supporting her daughter through cleft surgery and subsequent orthodontic work and speech therapy\, Katie noticed that there is still a lot of stigma and misunderstanding associated with a cleft. This often stems from a lack of awareness and knowledge of what a cleft is and how differently it can impact individuals and their families for entire lifetimes. \nIn a bid to tackle this issue\, last year\, Katie committed to hand-drawing 100 portraits of babies\, children and adults born with a cleft. Katie is now launching a ‘preview’ of some of her art\, hoping that it will help raise awareness and increase knowledge creatively and powerfully. \nKatie has also joined Smile Train UK’s Cleft Community Advisory Council\, using lived experience to advise on campaigns and activities and becoming a Smile Train UK ambassador to raise awareness for the charity. Katie is passionate about Smile Train’s work and has set up a dedicated Just Giving page in support of the charity. \nIn the UK\, cleft surgery is carried out within the first 12 months of a baby’s life by the National Health Service (NHS). However\, hundreds of thousands of children living in resource-poor communities worldwide are not as fortunate and do not have access to the lifesaving cleft treatment they desperately need. \nSmile Train uses a unique and sustainable model of empowering local medical professionals and hospitals with the tools they need to complete free surgeries and an entire programme of aftercare. Over the last 21 years\, the charity has supported safe and quality cleft care for 1.5+ million children and will continue to do so until every person in need of a cleft has access to the care they deserve. \nA selection of Katie’s collection will be on sale at The Brick Lane Gallery for a limited time. Entry to the exhibition is free\, and the portraits will be sold at the starting value of £125.00.

SUMMARY:Cockney Conversations Month 2022: 3rd March – 4th April 2022
DESCRIPTION:The first Cockney Conversations Month* runs from Thursday 3rd March- Monday 4th April 2022 and kicks off with six online discussions on the significance of Cockney cultural heritage and how it adapted to physical\, social and cultural changes in the East End. \nWhat are Cockney Cultures?\nThe Cockney identity is under threat from bias\, prejudice and ignorance. However\, history shows how Cockney is an identity based on positive\, inclusive values. We celebrate what it means to be Cockney today\, for all creeds and races\, from its East End heartland and beyond\, through to the global Cockney diaspora. Cockney Cultures encourages greater self-belief\, confidence\, and pride in who Cockneys are\, what they stand for\, and how they can best work together to face their shared future. \nCockney Cultures is asking interested individuals\, cultural and community groups\, public bodies and venues to work with us through support\, resourcing and long-term collaboration. The idea grew out of a public debate held in March 2021 called ‘Can Cockney Be Saved?’ led by Andy Green from Grow Social Capital CIC. Since then\, Andy and Saif Osmani from the Bengali East End Heritage Society joined heads to kickstart the initiative to celebrate the culture of London’s working-class communities.\nCome along and join us in the debates and discussions! \nSo what’s in store for Cockney Conversations Month 2022? \nOnline discussions and debates (every 45 minutes): \n1) ‘Is Cockney dying?’\, Thursday 3rd March 2022 @ midnight (GMT): guest academic sociolinguists\, cultural commentators and questions from the audience. BOOKING LINK: https://iscockneydying.eventbrite.com \n2) ‘The Story of Cockney in 50 Objects’\, Thursday 10th March 2022 @ midnight (GMT): a Cockney ‘Room 101’ where visitors can recommend their top 50 cultural objects. BOOKING LINK: https://50cockneyobjects.eventbrite.com \n3) ‘Is Essex Cockney?’\, Thursday 17th March 2022 @ midnight (GMT): sharing academic sociolinguistic studies on Cockney diaspora. BOOKING LINK: https://isessexcockney.eventbrite.com \n4) ‘Cockney-Bengali rhyming slang: how can Cockney revivalists learn from the Sylheti-Bengali Language Movement?’\, Thursday 24th March 2022 @ midnight (GMT): BOOKING LINK: https://cockneybengali.eventbrite.com \n5) ‘You havin’ a larf? Is there such a thing as Cockney humour?’\, Thursday 31st March 2022 @ midnight (GMT)? BOOKING LINK: https://cockneyhumour.eventbrite.com \n6) ‘Cockneycide – Is there prejudice against regional accents?’\, Monday 4th April 2022 @ midnight (GMT): a panel of cultural commentators and open discussions. Can ‘inclusive tribalism’ tackle ‘divisive’ tribalism? BOOKING LINK: https://cockneycide.eventbrite.com \nThe events listed above are FREE\, although places are limited. Book your place through the Eventbrite links or email cockneycultures@gmail.com\n*Events will be added to the programme throughout the month. SUMMARY:Velvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\, Syria
DESCRIPTION:With Velvet Society\, we strive to empower Syrian women and culture: it is an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and Artist Heba Al-Akkad. The exhibition is in conjunction with Refugee Week. We have also organised a series of interactive events that will complement the exhibition\, including two workshops\, one artist-led tour of the exhibition\, one live panel and one webinar.\n. \n\n\n\nAbout The Exhibition\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery is honoured to present Velvet Society\, an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and artist Heba Al-Akkad. The 90s fashion collection of Mardini\, emanating from the wealthy and powerful class of the self-styled “velvet society” prominent in 90s Syria\, will be juxtaposed with a range of vibrant artworks made in fabric and fibre by Heba Al-Akkad. A powerful dialogue will be established between these collections\, to expose a Damascus of the 90s dominated by complexes of glamour and power\, at once joyful yet troubled\, wielded both by and against the women in question.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition centres itself around the stories of these two Syrian Muslim women. From differing backgrounds\, they\, as refugees from the Syrian uprising\, struck up a friendship founded on a mutual interest in creativity within visual arts. Viewers will bear witness to their testimonies of liberation from religious and patriarchal violence. Photographs\, art objects and items of fashion are displayed to invigorate a commentary on feminism\, female freedom and Syrian history\, linked by the medium of textiles.\n\n\n\n\n\nProf. Janis Jefferies\, Emeritus Professor at Goldsmiths University\, has explained the salience of clothes in this exhibition:\n\n\n\n\nClothing carries powerful signs of non-verbal communication. It covers us\, it represents individual identities that can be played with\, disrupted and challenge what we do in our everyday lives\, both physically and sexually. If we are displaced or exiled from our homes or driven out by war\, what we wear changes. In this exhibition we see how two Muslim women become friends. They connect through art\, through their different relationship with material; a veil is worn\, designer labels are displayed. Photographs act as documents; new objects are made.\n\n\n\n\nBy bringing these stories to UK audiences in a seductive yet forceful exhibition\, fashion devotees and art lovers alike will explore the political nature of clothing\, how it shapes the representation of women in fashion\, society and art. Beliefs about Middle Eastern women will be challenged and a broader and richer recent Syrian history will emerge.\n\n\n\n\n\nHeba Al-Akkad was born in Damascus in 1981. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University 2006. She now lives and works in Gothenburg\, Sweden\, where she has been able to escape the cycle of familial violence and abuse that she suffered since girlhood. She has had solo shows across Europe and the Middle East. Litehouse Gallery has commissioned work from Al-Akkad on themes of self-identity and dress.\n\n\n\n\n\nRaghad Mardini\, on the other hand\, found herself inducted into the “velvet society”\, a figurative term for a class involved in high business and power in Syria during the 90s. Photographs from Mardini’s archive will give visual evidence of the velvet society\, which\, after many years of negotiating its excesses and its alienating demands\, she finally decided to reject. These photographs will be shown alongside a fashion collection supplied by western designers including Dior\, Versace\, Mugler\, Chanel\, Galliano\, YSL\, Alaia as well as Syrian designer Nicola Khoury\, all of which Mardini wore during her time within the velvet society. The exhibition will not just highlight the vibrancy of those times and the relentless glamour demanded in the velvet society\, but will look deeper into how female sexuality was weaponised in the game of politics and money.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is an exhibition about how\, in 90s Damascus\, fabric dazzled\, lured\, sheltered\, bound\, concealed\, and\, as time wore on\, changed.\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nProgramme of Events\n\n\n\n\nAlongside the exhibition\, we are organising a series of events ranging from workshops and live panels. Like the exhibition\, these events are completely free to attend and require pre-booking. Many Syrian artists who had fled to Lebanon were unable to continue their practice due to trauma and financial hardship. At ARA\, for a month\, they had bed\, board\, space\, freedom\, and all the materials needed to enable them to make art again. ARA also curated exhibitions and performances worldwide.\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nEmail info@litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\nWebsite www.litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\nOnline Shop www.litehousegalleryshop.co.uk/\n\n\n\n\n\nPhone +44 7833 700 984\n\n.\n\n\n\n\n\nQuick-links www.linktr.ee/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nInstagram www.instagram.com/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nFacebook www.facebook.com/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nTwitter www.twitter.com/Litehousegalery\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nExhibition Information\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nExhibition\n\n\n\n\n\nVelvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery\n\n\n\n\n\nwww.litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nVenue\n\n\n\n\n\nP21 Gallery (Kings Cross)\n\n\n\n\n\n21-27 Chalton Street\, London NW1 1JD\, UK\n\n\n\n\n\nwww.p21.gallery\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nDates\n\n\n\n\n\n23rd June – 23rd July\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nOpening Hours\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday\, Thursday & Friday: 12 – 6pm\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday: 12 – 8pm\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday: 12 – 4pm\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nEntry is free. No appointment necessary. SUMMARY:SIAPA YANG BAWA MELAYU AKU PERGI ? (WHO TOOK MY MALAY AWAY?)
DESCRIPTION:Siapa Yang Bawa Melayu Aku Pergi? (Who Took My Malay Away?) is a lecture performance that was inspired by the creator’s early experiences of living in London and made with the knowledge of life as a Malay person who was born\, raised and educated in Singapore. This solo performance explores what it means to be Malay and what it then means to be Malay in Singapore. \n\n\n\nWhat begins simply as an attempt to reconnect with his culture – by sharing the disappearing traditional writing and reading system of the Malay Language\, Jawi – then becomes a deeper exploration of lost culture\, customs\, heritage and self.

SUMMARY:Exclusive Opportunity: Race2Dinner Deconstructing Karen Screening in London
DESCRIPTION:Join us on for a transformative evening of uncompromising truth-telling\, dialogue\, and relationship-building that aims to open up challenging yet hopeful conversations around racism\, systems of oppression\, and white supremacy.\n\n\n\n\n\nFeaturing a screening and interactive discussion with documentary producers\, authors\, and founders of the Race2Dinner\, Regina Jackson and Saira Rao\, this will be an evening unlike others – direct\, at times difficult\, and not for the faint of heart.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe evening will begin with a screening of their film Deconstructing Karen\, where we see the harmful and often dangerous effects of white women’s complicity in upholding white supremacy.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis screening is an opportunity to reflect on our own behaviours and biases\, and to challenge ourselves to actively work towards dismantling the systems of racism and oppression that continue to harm marginalised communities.\n\n\n\n\n\nRegina and Saira will also discuss their powerful and thought-provoking book White Women: Everything You Already Know About Your Own Racism and How to Do Better. This bestseller challenges white women to confront their own complicity in the systems of racism and oppression that continue to harm communities of colour. A copy of the book will be included at this event.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe evening will culminate with providing participants with the opportunity to connect with one another and process what they experienced during the screening and conversation.\n\n\n\n\n\nWe invite everyone to come with an open mind and willingness to engage in meaningful dialogue. We hope that this event will be the foundation for forming meaningful community relationships\, continued reflection and action towards creating a more just and equitable society for all.

Each of these experts presents a new mechanism to support you through making deeply healing and transformative life changes. \n\n\n\nYour life can be so much more balanced\, healed\, and full of joy. You have to show up for yourself to initiate your transformation journey. We’ll do the rest. \n\n\n\nStarting July 24th\, this free\, 4-day livestream event presents 16 speakers — from somatic healers\, renegade economists\, tarot and human design visionaries\, microdosing and cannabis experts\, sexual wellness and IFS therapists\, grief/trauma and embodiment coaches\, and sustainability pioneers – who will share their guidance to create space for you to reimagine what your life can look like. \n\n\n\nSpeakers include Luis Mojica (@holistic.life.navigation)\, Fanny Priest (@the.trauma.witch)\, Eli Lawliet (@thegenderdoula)\, Dr. Amanda Reiman (@dr.amandareiman)\, Ana Maria Badila (@microdosingguru)\, Dr. Juliana Hauser (@drjulianahauser)\, Kelsey Rose Tortorice (@kelseyrosetort)\, Wendy Kornburg (@sunnabis)\, Julie Ewald (@identityyoga_)\, Dr. Stephanie Najjar\, Lex Ritchie (@thelexritchie)\, Adrienne Sloan (@adrienne_sloan)\, Della Duncan (@dellazduncan/@upstreampodcast)\, Dr. Crystal Dawn (@drcrystaldawn) and more. \n\n\n\nThese visionaries will share their expertise on the different ways to peel back the layers of conditioning we’ve all been exposed to (spoiler – if you’re alive in 2023 and reading this\, you’ve been exposed) so we can remember who we truly are and begin to live the lives we’ve been called to embody. From PhDs to healers to chefs to sexperts and more\, they have assembled to create a web of support that takes you from the life of convention and inertia into a life that’s liberated and filled with your unique purpose. If you like the status quo\, this is not a summit for you. If you’re tired of following the rules\, working too hard and becoming more “successful” while feeling more depleted than ever\, or feel like life went greyscale while you were tending to your to-do list and want the technicolour dreams of your future back\, this is your place\, and these are your people. \n\n\n\nAbout Omnia Network: Omnia Network is a brand-new online learning platform that features expert-vetted information on holistic wellness topics such as psychedelics\, sexual wellness\, green living\, grief and trauma healing\, tarot and human design\, somatic healing\, and more. The live workshops\, intensives\, and community meetups cover a variety of wellness topics that have often been deemed unconventional and taboo\, which is why reliable\, authoritative knowledge in these areas can be difficult to find until now. All the experts are respected leaders and authorities in their field\, making guidance on these sacred and oftentimes vulnerable subjects all the more impactful and trustworthy. Omnia makes learning about these areas of transformation accessible\, affordable\, and straightforward – they light the path back to one’s true self. \n\n\n\nAbout Omnia’s Founder\, Allison Mandell: She is the CEO and Founder of Omnia Network and has herself been burnt to a crisp working as an Executive Producer in television for 15 years\, focusing primarily on diverse and female-led content\, with emphasis on comedy\, adventure\, travel\, food\, and renovation television. When she wasn’t working\, she was completely devoted to her spiritual life and is no stranger to workshops in every area of spirituality\, sustainability\, and healing. By combining her skills from TV production with her love of workshops and transformative healing studies\, Omnia Network was the best way for her to engage both her heart and her mind in her life purpose. After recognizing that the systems in place would not support a healthy work/life balance\, and after reaching the pinnacle of her industry and feeling more depleted and unfulfilled than ever\, she recognized that it was time to build the very thing she needed: a safe community to unlearn oppressive structures so she could relearn who she really is and bring that essence into the world. And thus\, Omnia was born. Allison is a female leader not only in a gnarly\, heavily male-dominated television industry\, but she is also pioneering in making expert-led\, online learning for holistic wellness accessible. \n\n\n\nEvent Highlights: \n\n\n\nTransformative Keynote Presentations: Renowned experts and visionaries will share their insights\, experiences\, and strategies for transforming one’s life\, providing attendees with impactful knowledge and inspiration to make actionable changes that lead to a more authentic and meaningful life – that can begin today. \n\n\n\nDirect Expert Feedback: Participants can ask these groundbreaking experts direct questions on how to integrate different healing modalities into their life and get real-time responses – all for free. \n\n\n\nDiscover A Community: Connect with like-minded folks who want the same things you do – to change their lives in a way that provides space for one’s authentic purpose\, weirdness\, and joy. \n\n\n\nExclusive Access: Gain access to exclusive prerecorded workshops\, resources\, research\, and tools to help disrupt the disempowering patterns in one’s life and replace them with self-discovery and embodied aliveness. \n\n\n\nRegistration for The Self-Renewal Summit is now open; to learn more about the event\, explore the speakers\, and secure your spot\, visit http://www.omnianetwork.com.

Anderson and Dr Harecourt Fuller – explores one of the most revered heroines in the history of the ‘New World’: Nanny of the Maroons. Her victory is celebrated in the present with her image appearing on the Jamaican $500 note and a posthumous award of Order of National Hero. Her resistance is an inspirational example of the many ways in which women have undermined slavery throughout history. SUMMARY:Czech Documentary Now: The Great Nothing
DESCRIPTION:evA feature-length documentary tragicomedy delving into the Czech response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The result is an absurdly humorous portrayal of society\, tinged with serious undertones\, yet unexpectedly lighthearted\, leaving viewers questioning the surreal reality of it all. \nVít Klusák\, Marika Pecháčková\, Czech Republic 2023\, 103´\nThe Czech Lion nomination for the Best Czech Documentary \n“It’s not about Covid\, it’s about us\,”  – Viewer \nIn the spring of 2020\, Vít Klusák (known for “Caught in the Net” and “Czech Dream”) and Marika Pecháčková embarked on a journey through the deserted streets of Prague\, documenting the nation’s two-year struggle with the global crisis and government mandates. Through poignant human narratives\, poetic reflections on the times\, surreal imagery\, and pivotal societal moments\, the filmmakers ventured into hospitals alongside doctors\, captured the fervour of anti-vaxx protesters\, witnessed athletes adapting to home training\, and followed a mezzo-soprano forced to find employment in a supermarket. With striking black-and-white cinematography\, the film refrains from imposing judgment\, allowing the raw footage to speak for itself.\nScreened as part of the Czech Centre’s Czech Documentary Now series. \nAbout the directors and the producer\nVít Klusák is a well known Czech director who with Filip Remunda shot the prize-winning film Czech Dream about a fictional supermarket in 2003. Since than he has directed many movies including Caught in the Net (2020)\, White World according to Daliborek (2017) and One Second Forever (2021) \nMarika Pecháčková studied photography and journalism before she finally realised that documentary film was the place from which she wanted to watch and understand the world. Her fundamental structures of thinking come from psychology and her personal experience with psychotherapy. Filmography: Rest Now \nPavla Klimešová is a producer based in the Czech Republic who studied film production at FAMU. She produced Caught in the Net\, an award-winning documentary by the directing duo Vít Klusák & Barbora Chalupová about child abuse online and Barbora’s next film The Law of Love about same sex marriages in Czechia. She is now developing Marika Pecháčková’s debut Runaway.
