We invite you to join us and bring your expertise and experience to share. The venue is the Slade Adventure Playground\, a beautiful setting in South London. \nSpeakers include Sue Palmer\, author of Toxic Childhood and founder of Upstart Scotland\, Michaela Carmichael\, Trustee of Slade Gardens Community Play Association and Senior Advisor for Common Sense Media UK and Christopher Clouder\, Co-Founder of the Alliance for Childhood. \nIn the morning speakers will introduce a few of the themes in a panel discussion. We’ll follow up after lunch with conversations in small groups and round off the day with a plenum session. \nProgramme \nam \n10.30 am arrive\, tea and coffee \n10.45 Welcome and introductions \n11.00 Panel Discussion \npm \n12.15 Lunch \n1.15 Small groups \n2.00 Plenum and summing up \n2.30 Close \nYou will be able to find more information and updates on our website here. \nThe event is free but we suggest you make a donation towards the costs of the event with lunch and refreshments. SUMMARY:Talk: The Battle of Chillianwala - Chelsea History Festival
DESCRIPTION:Ian McLeod tells the story of one of the fiercest battles of the Second Sikh War\, assessing its significance and revealing a unique link with the Royal Hospital Chelsea. \nAbout the event\nIn January 1849\, in the Punjab (in modern-day Pakistan)\, forces of the British East India Company clashed with the army of the Sikh Empire in a fierce and bloody battle. The British public were shocked by the severe casualties inflicted on British soldiers\, particularly those of the 24th Regiment of Foot\, which lost half of its strength in dead and wounded. Both sides claimed victory\, but British prestige was damaged. \nAt the time\, the battle fired Victorian imaginations. One distinguished poet immortalised it in verse and\, when two British generals were remarking on the disaster of the ‘Charge of the Light Brigade’ in Crimea in 1854\, one remarked: ‘These sorts of things will happen in war. It is nothing to Chillianwala.’

SUMMARY:Mapping Medieval Manuscripts (Talk)
DESCRIPTION:Mapping medieval manuscripts: how surviving romance manuscripts are aiding the search for People of Colour in North Atlantic medieval Europe \nMedieval manuscripts offer a unique window into the lives and imaginations of the past. Illuminated pages can point to wealthy patrons\, while the texts themselves reveal the interests and concerns of medieval readers. Some aspects of the medieval world\, however\, are less visible. Tracing the presence of People of Colour in North Atlantic medieval Europe is one such challenge. While representations exist\, the question remains: how can we locate the real people behind the stories?

SUMMARY:Utoya - UK Premiere
DESCRIPTION:July 2011. On the Norwegian island of Utoya\, a far-right terrorist has just massacred sixty-nine innocent students attending a socialist Summer Camp. \nGunnar and Malin have sent their daughter to the island and desperately seek contact. On the farm next door to the perpetrators\, Petter and Inga realise their suspicions about him are well founded. At Central Command\, Alf and Unni must decide on the best course of action in response to the attack. \nA searing reflection on the domestic effects of societal trauma\, Utoya offers a timely reminder of the threat of far-right extremism\, inviting us to consider how tragedy can both bind people together and pull them further apart. This production is a UK Premiere from leading Italian writer Edoardo Erba.
