SUMMARY:AI and the Enshittification of the Media
DESCRIPTION:What’s gone wrong with the media? We’ve seen decades of decline and collapse as business models make millions for shareholders based on recurring cuts and downgraded quality. \nContent suffers as quality journalism is replaced by churnalism and clickbait. And we are now increasingly seeing AI content threatening to replace the work of human journalists. \nThe NUJ London digital media branch has organised an evening of discussion about the problems facing the media and journalism\, led by Cory Doctorow. \nCory will discuss the issues in his recent non-fiction books: \n\nThe Reverse Centaur’s Guide to Life after AI (June 2026): A provocative guide to what’s good\, bad\, and (profoundly) stupid about AI.\nEnshittification: Why Everything Suddenly Got Worse and What to Do About It (Oct 2025): How misogyny\, conspiratorialism\, surveillance\, manipulation\, fraud and AI slop are drowning the internet.\n\nCory will also be joined by journalists who have been victims of the decaying media\, recently made redundant as their skills are no longer required by the business to discuss what’s gone wrong.

SUMMARY:Creative Industries Festival 2026 – General Admission – UEL Event
DESCRIPTION:Creative Balance: Good Work\, Health and Life \nThe 2026 Creative Industries Festival explores how creativity can help us find balance in our work\, health and lives. As creative practitioners navigate increasingly complex ways of working\, the festival focuses on what it means to find good work that supports inclusion\, health and wellbeing. \nAs the boundaries between professional and personal life continue to blur\, creative thinkers and makers are reimagining what “good work” looks like: purposeful\, sustainable and human-centred. \nThrough talks\, workshops and industry collaborations\, we’ll explore how creativity can shape workplaces that foster inclusion\, wellbeing and innovation\, and how we can work together to create an industry where people can truly thrive.

SUMMARY:London Loo Tour
DESCRIPTION:It’s Not the Bog-Standard London Experience! \nPrepare to be immersed (metaphorically\, that is!) in a world where the humble toilet becomes a portal to explore history\, anthropology\, art\, architecture\, identity\, and of course\, our sense of humour. \nFrom the earliest latrines through to the future of flushing\, your guide will take you on a whirlwind tour through the history of Britain’s public toilets\, with plenty of interesting sights and practical tips along the way. You’ll answer all the questions you never knew you had… How did the Romans wipe their bottoms?  Was there really a man named Thomas Crapper? How long will you spend in the smallest room in a lifetime? And why do we even call it a loo? \nIt’s the perfect day out for anyone who likes to dive a bit deeper… lifelong Londoners and first time visitors alike! One thing is for sure: you may never think about a simple visit to the lavatory the same way again!

SUMMARY:Twelve People Telling True Stories — Phone-Free\, Alcohol-Free\, Central London
DESCRIPTION:For one hour and forty-five minutes on a Saturday afternoon\, twelve people sit in a circle in central London and tell each other true things. \nOne question is offered. Whoever wants to answer it\, answers it — four or five minutes each\, no notes. There’s a pause in the middle for tea and snacks\, and then the circle picks up where it left off. \nIt’s phone-free and alcohol-free. No networking\, no name badges\, no small talk. And you don’t have to tell a story at all: listening counts\, and plenty of people say nothing for the first hour. \nTwelve seats per sitting. Two sittings on Saturday 22 August — 2:00–3:45pm and 4:15–6:00pm — in central London\, NW1. Coffee\, tea\, cold lemonade and snacks included. From £24.

SUMMARY:Music Hath No Borders - South African Buskaid Ensemble in Concert - 21.08.26
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a magical fundraising concert with ten members of the internationally renowned South African Buskaid Ensemble – a performance of live classical music from Handel and Elgar to township Kwela music. \nThis is a poignant venue for Buskaid: Buskaid’s Founder\, Rosemary Nalden\, is the daughter of the late Charles Nalden CBE\, one of Coram’s most distinguished foundlings. The Buskaid musicians are themselves no strangers to hardship: like Coram\, Buskaid offers transformative opportunities for less advantaged young people. \nFor this musical celebration\, Rosemary has chosen music to link both charities\, including the Chaconne from Terpsichore by Handel\, Coram’s most famous benefactor\, and Elgar’s Sospiri\, honouring Rosemary’s father\, an accomplished harpist who loved the music of Edward Elgar. The concert will end with a rousing burst of township ‘Kwela’ music\, arranged by the Buskaid musicians themselves. \nTickets and Timings \nTickets can be booked on Eventbrite. \nAll tickets include a welcome drink\, and private access to the Foundling Museum‘s exhibition\, including the special exhibition display\, 300 Years of the ‘Rival Queens’: Handel’s 1726 Opera Season. \n6 pm: Access to the Foundling Museum for all guests. \n7 pm-9 pm: Concert with interval. \nAbout Buskaid \nThe Buskaid Music School was founded by Rosemary Nalden in 1997 in response to requests from the less privileged local community in Diepkloof Soweto. At its inception\, it comprised just 15 children; its current membership stands at 82. To meet this demand\, in 2002 Buskaid initiated a teacher-training course for all its students; all the musicians playing tonight are employed by Buskaid as highly-skilled string teachers. \nThe Buskaid Ensemble is world-renowned for its high-performance standards and its innate grasp of musical style\, and as a result\, has undertaken 28 international tours to Europe and the Americas. It is the only African orchestra to have performed at the BBC Proms. \nThe Ensemble has collaborated with many distinguished artists such as Sir John Eliot Gardiner\, Melvyn Tan\, Steven Isserlis and Karl Jenkins. It has performed in the presence of numerous dignitaries\, notably the late Nelson Mandela\, Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II\, King Charles III\, and Michelle Obama. \nProgramme \nJean-Philippe Rameau – Air pour les Guerriers; Entrée De Polymnie; Contredanses I & II \nHenry Purcell – Fairest Isle; Rondeau; If Love’s a Sweet Passion; Chaconne \nEdward Elgar – Sospiri (Sighs) \nJean Sibelius – Impromptu \nGeorge Frideric Handel – Terpsichore HWV 8b: Chacconne \nKwela\, Afro-jazz and Afro-pop (Arr. Buskaid musicians) \nBook Classical String Ensembles for Events in the UK via Music for London.

SUMMARY:Unwriting the Artist’s Statement | Online Workshop with Elle Reynolds
DESCRIPTION:‘Unwriting the Artist’s Statement’ is a focused\, playful online workshop centred on conversation\, making\, and discovering your own voice. \nThe session invites you to abscond from International Art English and respond directly to your work. Moving away from the critical language often used to address contemporary art\, the workshop proposes different protocols for speaking about your practice to the world.  \nThrough a series of guided prompts\, improvisation\, and gentle exercises\, participants will work with revision\, association\, and a deliberate quality of randomness to develop ways of using their own voice. The focus is on speaking through the work rather than separating language from practice. \nThe workshop is hosted by IMT Gallery and led by artist and educator Elle Reynolds\, whose practice works through collaborative processes\, storytelling\, and material experimentation. \nFor makers\, artists\, writers\, anti-writers\, poets\, curators at any stage of their practice\, and anyone interested in finding alternative ways to speak about their work. It is especially useful if you are preparing portfolios\, applications\, or exhibitions\, or if you simply want your language to feel more natural and connected to what you do. \nPlaces are limited — the workshop takes place on Sunday 16 August\, 3-5pm (BST). \nFollow the link below to learn more and book. \nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/guest-house-unwriting-the-artists-statement-online-workshop-tickets-1992700479777

SUMMARY:Seven Dials walk: the 1920s and 1930s\, and the making of modern London
DESCRIPTION:Join historian Matt Houlbrook on a journey into a remarkable neighbourhood and the battle to define modern London. \nThroughout the 1920s and 1930s\, Seven Dials was one of London’s most diverse neighbourhoods\, home to migrant and working-class communities\, bohemian clubs and cafes. But business leaders and city planners had other ideas. \nBeginning with a rancorous libel trial of 1927\, in which a Sierra Leonean café owner and his wife confronted the racist newspaper that destroyed their business\, Matt’s tour of Seven Dials reveals the surprising history of this remarkable neighbourhood. He traces how tensions that simmered on the streets and finally exploded in court betrayed the politics of urban ‘improvement’ and the ‘colour bar’. Underlying the trial was a series of troubling questions that would define Britain in the twentieth century – about race\, class and the boundaries of belonging\, gentrification and the kind of city London would become. \nThe tour includes the site of long-forgotten cafes and queer nightclubs\, the tenements\, shops\, and workshops where the people of Seven Dials lived\, worked\, and played\, and modernist office blocks that were never built\, as well as St Giles Buildings (1925\, C Westcott Reeves and Alfred Rason) and the Cambridge Theatre (1930\, Wimperis\, Simpson\, and Guthrie). \nMatt Houlbrook is a writer\, historian\, and Professor of Cultural History at the University of Birmingham. He is the author of Songs of Seven Dials: An intimate history of 1920s and 1930s London (2026)\, Prince of Tricksters: The incredible true story of Netley Lucas\, gentleman crook (2016)\, and Queer London: Perils and pleasures in the sexual metropolis\, 1918-57 (2005). \nThe walking tour will last about 2 hours and will go ahead in any weather. \nNon-members: £25\nC20 Members: £20\nStudents: £15.00\nYoung C20: £12.50

SUMMARY:A Professorial Lecture by Professor Ioannis S. Pantelidis
DESCRIPTION:“Hospitality as a regenerative force for human connection\, wellbeing and leadership” \nIn this lecture\, Professor Ioannis S. Pantelidis examines the changing landscape of hospitality and tourism and shows how the sector can create regenerative ecosystems through innovation\, behaviour and human-centred leadership. Intelligent systems\, data-driven personalisation and rising experiential expectations are transforming service environments\, yet the true source of excellence remains the human touch. Hospitality cultivates empathy\, cultural awareness\, agility and the practical art of caring for others. These qualities strengthen leadership across health\, business\, transport\, the creative industries and every area where human interaction shapes success. At a time when isolation and mental health concerns are increasing\, the values of hospitality become even more significant. Warm service\, genuine welcome and meaningful moments support emotional well-being and deepen social connection. Drawing on research\, education and lived experience\, Professor Pantelidis offers an optimistic and thought-provoking vision of a sector that continues to evolve while remaining rooted in human values that can guide society toward stronger communities and more compassionate leadership.

SUMMARY:Designed to Belong: Modernism\, Industry and Community
DESCRIPTION:Belonging is not accidental – it is designed. This panel explores how architecture shapes belonging\, not just by providing shelter\, but by structuring everyday life. \n\nUsing Bata Village at East Tilbury as a starting point\, it examines how modernist ideals\, industrial ambition\, and community planning created a distinctive model of living. Historian Milan Balaban situates the settlement within the global story of Bata cities\, while architectural historian Gillian Darley reflects on its significance for British modernism. Mick Pinion from the Bata Heritage Centre brings a local and heritage perspective on East Tilbury’s development and legacy\, and architect Ondřej Chybík discusses contemporary lessons for urban planning. Chaired by John Tusa\, the conversation links historical experiments to today’s questions of development\, identity and place-making. \nSPEAKERS:\nSir John Tusa is a British arts administrator\, author\, journalist and former presenter of the BBC’s Newsnight. Born in Czechoslovakia\, he moved to East Tilbury in 1939\, where his father was Managing Director of the British Bata Shoe Company factory. He is Co-Chairman of the European Union Youth Orchestra and was previously Managing Director of the BBC World Service and Director of the Barbican Arts Centre. He is the author of On Board\, Making a Noise and On Creativity. \nGillian Darley OBE is a widely published writer and historian who was President of the Twentieth Century Society from 2014 until 2021. She first visited East Tilbury\, in search of the Bata industrial village\, in the early 1970s\, when researching and photographing her first book\, Villages of Vision (1975\, reissued 2007). Ever since she has returned at regular Intervals. The village featured in her most recent book\, Excellent Essex (2019). In 2024\, Gillian achieved a longed-for aim\, a visit to Zlin. \nMilan Balaban is a historian specialising in business\, economic\, and industrial history\, with a focus on the global Bata Company network. He is a researcher at the Information Centre Bata\, Tomas Bata University in Zlín\, and a lecturer at Palacký University in Olomouc. His work examines industrialisation\, company towns\, and corporate mobility in Central and Eastern Europe. He has published several books\, including Bata across Continents (2022)\, and articles in leading journals\, and lectures internationally on multinational enterprises and industrial modernity. \n\nAdmission: £5 (+ Eventbrite fee)\nBOOK NOW\n\nPart of the London Festival of Architecture. \nThe talk is an accompanying event to the exhibition Desire to Create: Baťa’s Architecture of Belonging\, presented at the Vitrínka Gallery\, running from 9 April to 12 June 2026.

SUMMARY:The Long Play Sessions: Zakia Sewell – Finding Albion – Myth\, Folklore and the Quest for a Hidden Britain
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday 5th June at 7:00 pm at ICMP’s Queen’s Park venue for a special in‑conversation event with award‑winning writer\, DJ and broadcaster Zakia Sewell\, as she discusses her brand‑new book: \nFINDING ALBION – Myth\, Folklore and the Quest for a Hidden Britain \nIn this intimate interview\, Zakia will discuss her quest for ‘another Britain’. How she traversed the length and breadth of our island from Somerset to Scotland\, seeking out a different story – one that lies beyond divisive national myths and symbols. \nIn Finding Albion\, Zakia uncovers an alternative spirit of Britain that is vividly alive today. It is found in otherworldly folk songs\, ancient legends\, Celtic seasonal rites and mystic stone circles that punctuate our landscape. Her journey begins as the sun rises on the spring equinox over Glastonbury Tor\, where she meets neopagans reclaiming traditions from our pre-Christian past. At summer’s peak at Notting Hill Carnival\, she hears cultural echoes that passed along the slave trade routes from the Caribbean. On All Hallows’ Eve\, she encounters the ghosts of Empire that are still haunting the nation\, and in the depths of a Cornish winter\, she asks if today’s new folk revival could unite our increasingly divided country? \nFinding Albion brings a hopeful story of Britain out from the shadows\, giving us a deeper sense of who we are and heralding the promise of a brighter future. \nTickets available here – https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-long-play-sessions-zakia-sewell-finding-albion-tickets-1988473699363?aff=oddtdtcreator \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nZakia Sewell is a writer\, DJ and broadcaster based in London. She hosts Dream Time on BBC Radio 6 Music and used to host the flagship breakfast show on NTS Radio. For the past eight years\, she has been producing and presenting radio documentaries and podcasts for platforms such as BBC Radio 3 and 4\, Tate and Camden Arts Centre. Her acclaimed four-part Radio 4 series My Albion was an inspiration for her book. Her writing has appeared in publications including Tate Etc.\, Resident Advisor and Weird Walk\, as well as in the essay collection This Woman’s Work.
