SUMMARY:Homes\, Hauntedness & Belonging | Owl Bookshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special conversation about Homes\, Hauntedness and Belonging\, exploring what happens when the spectral enters the domestic and what haunted houses reveal about the worlds we inhabit. \nTogether\, Caitlin Blackwell Baines\, Essie Fox and Leon Craig will discuss how spectral encounters\, genre expectations and historical accounts can all be analysed to consider who belongs and who is left out. From Catherine’s clever feminist retelling of Wuthering Heights\, to The Decadence’s hedonistic nightmare holiday ensemble\, and How to Build a Haunted House’s erudite non-fiction journey from Strawberry Hill to Himeji Castle in Japan\, these works interrogate familiar ideas of hauntedness and the stories we tell about our homes. Whom do we exclude and whom do we welcome inside? How can the past and present coexist? \nAt heart\, haunted houses are never just about ghosts. They are also about ownership\, power\, memory and the cultural anxieties of the places and times in which they appear. Gather round for troublesome ghosts\, gothic drama and pre-Halloween atmosphere. \n  \n\n\n\n\nCaitlin Blackwell Baines is an art historian and author\, specialising in Georgian art and architecture. Born in Toronto\, she later emigrated to the UK to pursue an MA from the Courtauld Institute of Art and a PhD from the University of York in art history. Upon completing her studies\, she moved to the Isle of Bute off the Western coast of Scotland\, and worked as a curator at Mount Stuart\, a late Victorian Gothic Revival palace. When she isn’t visiting haunted houses and recording her ghost story-themed history podcast\, Haunted Homes\, Caitlin is based in East Sussex.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEssie Fox was born and raised in Herefordshire. Always an avid reader\, she now writes historical novels. Essie has appeared at many literary events\, including giving lectures at the V&A\, the Westminster Library\, and the National Gallery in London. She also hosts a podcast called Talking the Gothic. Essie’s debut\, The Somnambulist\, was shortlisted for the National Book Awards\, and featured on Channel 4’s TV Book Club. The Fascination was an instant Sunday Times Top Ten best seller. Dangerous\, a Regency crime thriller featuring Lord Byron\, has been selected as a Times Book of the Month … as have her other novels\, including the latest – Catherine: A retelling of Wuthering Heights.\n\n\n\n\nLeon Craig is the author of queer haunted house novel The Decadence (2025) and gothic short story collection Parallel Hells (2022) Leon’s work has also featured in Hazlitt\, Elsewhere: A Journal of Place and Berlin Babel anthology and her non-fiction has been published in the Sunday Times\, the TLS and the  Telegraph. Born in North London\, she now lives in Berlin.

SUMMARY:Viktorie Hanišová: The Mushroom Gatherer
DESCRIPTION:Why do Czechs love mushrooms so much? And what happens when the forest becomes a refuge from the rest of the world? Join acclaimed Czech novelist Viktorie Hanišová to celebrate the English-language publication of The Mushroom Gatherer (Houbařka)\, a compelling novel of solitude\, family\, memory and the longing for human connection. \nDeep in the Bohemian Forest\, Sára lives a life of her own making. For seven years\, she has followed the same woodland paths\, gathering mushrooms to sell and keeping the rest of the world at a safe distance. Her days are quiet\, solitary and meticulously ordered – until the death of her mother begins to unsettle everything she has tried to leave behind. \nAs Sára sorts through her baskets of chanterelles and boletes\, she is also forced to confront the memories\, wounds and complicated family ties that have shaped her life. The forest offers her freedom and refuge\, but it also becomes the place where the past catches up with her. \nIn conversation\, Hanišová will explore the novel’s themes of isolation\, vulnerability\, family and trauma\, as well as the distinctly Czech passion for mushroom picking. \nViktorie Hanišová is a Czech novelist\, translator\, and teacher\, widely regarded as one of the most distinctive voices of her generation. She studied English and German at Charles University in Prague and debuted in 2015 with the novel Anežka. Her subsequent books include The Mushroom Gatherer (as Houbařka\, 2018)\, Rekonstrukce (2019)\, the short story collection Dlouhá trať (2020)\, Beton a hlína (2021)\, and the novel Neděle odpoledne (2022). Her political novella Tvůj táta je v ohni is forthcoming in 2026. \nViktorie Hanišová\, The Mushroom Gatherer\, translated by Véronique Firkusny\, Seagull Books\, 2025\, 300p \nAdmission: £5 (+ Eventbrite fee) \nThis event is part of the 30th Made in Prague Festival organised by Czech Centre London

SUMMARY:How to Be Feral: Movement Practices to Re-Wild Your Body with Claire Loussouarn
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a four-session online course exploring the feral intelligence of the body: how it listens\, questions\, adapts\, resists habit\, and remembers what modern life teaches us to forget. \n‘How to Be Feral: Movement Practices to Re-Wild Your Body’ invites you to explore unfamiliar ways of moving that unsettle what we think we know about our bodies. Drawing from Claire Loussouarn’s book How to Be Feral\, we’ll practise trusting instinct before understanding\, and learning from the more-than-human world.  \nAcross four fortnightly sessions\, we’ll use movement as a mode of thinking and knowing\, alongside simple forms of movement mapping\, to explore how movement can open different perspectives\, train attention\, and reconnect us to parts of ourselves that have been quietened by social and cultural conditioning. Together we’ll approach our everyday environments as something to be received\, listened to and moved with. \nLed by movement artist Dr Claire Loussouarn and hosted by IMT Gallery\, the course offers a reflective and practical space for artists\, performers\, writers\, researchers\, educators\, somatic practitioners\, ecologists\, and anyone curious about how the body can think\, sense and know. \n🌿 No movement experience is needed — just curiosity and a willingness to explore. \nThe course begins 4 October 2026. \nFollow the link below for full details\, and to book.

SUMMARY:Little Thief + Q&A with director Ondřej Hudeček and actor Václav Neužil
DESCRIPTION:Fresh out of prison\, good-hearted small-time thief Lupyn returns to his hometown in South Moravia\, only to find the world turned upside down by the pandemic. With businesses struggling and the usual rules seemingly suspended\, his particular talents suddenly offer an unlikely way to help those around him. But when Lupyn’s plans bring him into the orbit of local crime boss Asasín and corrupt policeman Čeněk (wonderfully played by Václav Neužil) – who happens to be dating Lupyn’s mother- things quickly become more complicated than he bargained for. \nThis feature debut from Sundance-winning director Ondřej Hudeček is a sharp and wonderfully earthy mix of black comedy\, crime and satire. Steeped in local dialect\, characters and atmosphere\, it puts a distinctly Czech spin on the classic heist comedy\, delivering a mischievous ‘Covid Western ‘ where the boundaries between right and wrong become increasingly blurred. \nOndřej Hudeček\, Czech Republic 2026\, 118‘\, English subtitles\nCast: Matyáš Řezníček\, Václav Neužil\, Stanislav Majer\, Denisa Barešová \, Eva Vrbková

SUMMARY:Huella by Isadora - London Theatre
DESCRIPTION:At the edge of ecological collapse\, Huella unfolds around an ambiguous waterfall carrying the memory of water\, as new geologies emerge. Through eco-poetic symbolism\, a danced installation-performance of textural and flamenco soundscapes traverses dissonant yet porous\, solastalgic bodies and landscapes\, entangled in the waterfall’s trace.\nOpening onto an uncertain time between an altered present and a future archive\, the waterfall holds play\, intimacies\, rituals\, human and animal passages\, alongside contaminated sediments and materials that persist. \nHuella emerges from the lived tension of perceiving the living world’s alteration while continuing to inhabit everyday life. It resonates with solastalgia: the feeling that arises as a familiar environment transforms while we are still living within it.\nThe narrative is embodied through a movement language inspired by contemporary improvisation and the geometries of Vogue and flamenco aesthetics.\nFragments from Lorca’s Suites and Libro de poemas also appear as poetic undercurrents. \nIsadora is a French-Tunisian artist working across movement\, performance and installation\, born in Paris and based in London. As a Vogue performer and member of the Iconic House of Milan (as Isadora Milan)\, she walks balls internationally. She develops an experimental movement language inspired by New Way Vogue\, Arms Control\, contemporary improvisation and flamenco. Her hybrid practice seeks to unsettle dominant perceptions of feminine representation and embodiment\, while increasingly engaging with ecological transformation and with human and more-than-human experiences. She also works with costume and objects as spaces for transformation and play. \nDirected and performed by: Isadora\nInstallation concept: Isadora\nCante: Carlos de Luisa\nOriginal guitar composition and live guitar: Michael McMahon\nCostume design: Isadora\, Amber Jiang\nLighting design: Emma Gasson. \nBooking: https://tickets.thecockpit.org.uk/sales/Shows/voila-festival-2026/huella

SUMMARY:The Lure of... : November
DESCRIPTION:Join the team behind the independent investigative news outlet Byline Times for an entertaining evening of challenging discussion to help us understand the unprecedented times we are living in – and why they are happening – with those with an inside track. \nThere’s no shortage of strong opinions in Britain today – what’s missing is good-faith debate. Too much of our national conversation has become performative. It seems designed to inflame rather than illuminate. \nThat’s why Byline Times launched a series of events at the Cockpit in 2025. These interactive discussions have sparked genuinely unexpected and illuminating moments. \nAt a time when many of Britain’s most powerful media proprietors remain distant and unseen\, Byline does the opposite: stepping out from behind the editorial line and into the room. \nHosted by Byline Times Editor-in-Chief Hardeep Matharu and Co-Founder Peter Jukes\, plus a wide-ranging variety of guest authors\, campaigners and thought leaders. \nPrevious guests have included: broadcaster and academic Bonnie Greer\, journalist and activist Femi Oluwole\, novelist Jake Arnott\, Camerados founder Maff Potts\, XR and Humanity Project co-founder Clare Farrell\, author and Women’s Equality Party co-founder Catherine Mayer\, Conservative commentator Albie Amankona\, investigative journalist and author Nafeez Ahmed\, Asylum Speakers founder Jaz O’Hara\, author and broadcaster John Sweeney and many many more… \nIn addition to current affairs\, there’s also laughter\, readings\, music\, poetry – there’s even been dancing and a good old sing song round the old Joanna – every night is different!

SUMMARY:Panel Talk: Staging the (Un)translatable: Global Voices and Panlingual Dramaturgies
DESCRIPTION:Join professional theatre-makers\, dramaturgs\, translators\, publishers and researchers for a panel talk to examine the interrelation between (un)translatability\, (un)stageability and (un)performability. \nWe will reflect on these topics in the context of Voila! Theatre festival championing work by artists working across multiple languages\, at a time when the UK theatre landscape is increasingly taking note of transnational artists and audiences. \nWe will address panlingualism in the theatre\, alongside the experience of making work in languages other than English and/or the creatives’ own mother tongue. \nWe will reflect on what it means to be an exophonic artist\, and how migration challenges the notion of the ‘native speaker’. The event will include a short reading from a contemporary play\, with a view to serve as a prompt for an applied conversation on the topic. Moderator: Dr Jozefina Komporaly (UAL Wimbledon College of Arts\, academic and translator)

SUMMARY:Age UK London launches ‘Rock Against Ageism’ with Toyah Willcox Event
DESCRIPTION:The Age UK London team know that age is only a number\, especially when it comes to creativity and music.  So they are delighted to announce the first Rock Against Ageism special event\, taking place on 18 November\, featuring none other than music icon Toyah Willcox. \n\nThis special occasion will offer an illuminating conversation with a pop rock legend who is close to so many of our hearts in the UK. It’s no Mystery that the Age UK London team love her! Your support will help fund the vital work of Age UK London\, an independent charity within the wider Age UK network dedicated to improving the lives of older people across the capital.\n\nThe afternoon will open with an intimate fireside chat with Toyah\, one of the UK’s most distinctive and enduring musical talents. The conversation will explore her remarkable career\, experiences of ageing in the public eye\, and the importance of challenging ageism across the music industry and wider society.\n\nThe event is intended to be the first in a series of Rock Against Ageism events\, with a number of other well-known singers already on board for future occasions…very exciting indeed!\n\nThe launch of the Rock Against Ageism events comes at an important time for the campaign against ageism. Recent research undertaken by Age UK London into the experiences of older Londoners found that almost half have experienced ageism\, while 60% are reluctant to challenge it. Older Londoners reported experiencing ageism in everyday situations\, including on public transport\, in shops and when accessing healthcare services such as GP surgeries and hospitals.\n\nRock Against Ageism aims not only to raise funds\, but also to use music’s power and influence to challenge negative stereotypes about ageing and promote a more positive\, inclusive view of later life.\n\nLiz Drury\, CEO of Age UK London\, said:\n\n“We are over the moon that Toyah has agreed to support us by speaking at this special event. She is the epitome of creativity and joy\, and a shining example of a positive attitude at any age.”\n\n“For 42 years\, Toyah has taken to the stage like no other. She has received numerous awards and nominations for her work in singing\, writing and acting\, and her tours continue to sell out across the country.”\n\n“Thank you for joining us\, Toyah!”\n\nThe November event will offer supporters the chance to enjoy a unique afternoon with a true music icon while helping Age UK London continue its work to improve the lives of older people across the capital.\n\nTickets are priced at £30 and can be booked here.
