SUMMARY:London Loo Tour
DESCRIPTION:It’s Not the Bog-Standard London Experience! \nPrepare to be immersed (metaphorically\, that is!) in a world where the humble toilet becomes a portal to explore history\, anthropology\, art\, architecture\, identity\, and of course\, our sense of humour. \nFrom the earliest latrines through to the future of flushing\, your guide will take you on a whirlwind tour through the history of Britain’s public toilets\, with plenty of interesting sights and practical tips along the way. You’ll answer all the questions you never knew you had… How did the Romans wipe their bottoms?  Was there really a man named Thomas Crapper? How long will you spend in the smallest room in a lifetime? And why do we even call it a loo? \nIt’s the perfect day out for anyone who likes to dive a bit deeper… lifelong Londoners and first time visitors alike! One thing is for sure: you may never think about a simple visit to the lavatory the same way again!

SUMMARY:Guest House: Unwriting the Artist’s Statement Online Workshop with Elle Reynolds
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a focused\, playful session of conversation\, making\, and discovering your own voice. This workshop creates space to build confidence\, loosen habits around language\, and allow your voice to develop naturally\, staying close to your practice rather than separate from it. \nUnwriting the Artist’s Statement invites you to abscond from International Art English and respond directly to your work. Moving away from the critical language often used to address contemporary art\, this workshop proposes different protocols for speaking about your practice to the world.  \nThrough a series of guided prompts\, improvisation\, and gentle exercises\, participants will work with revision\, association\, and a deliberate quality of randomness to develop ways of using their own voice. The focus is on speaking through the work rather than separating language from practice. \nThis is a supportive space for play\, experimentation\, and discovery. No previous experience or prepared text is needed.  \nThe workshop is hosted by IMT Gallery and led by artist Elle Reynolds\, whose practice works through collaborative processes\, storytelling\, and material experimentation. Her work explores making as a way of thinking together\, with a particular interest in shared authorship\, provisional forms\, and the social life of materials. \nOver the two hours\, you will: \n\nDevelop new ways of talking about your work that feel personal and less rehearsed\nLoosen habits around formal or institutional language\nBuild confidence in speaking and writing about your practice\nGenerate material you can continue to develop after the session\nConnect with others navigating similar questions around language and practice.\n\nAbout Elle Reynolds: \nArtist/scholarresearcherquiet disrupter\, Elle Reynolds has a background in organising practice. She continually challenges traditional institutional structures\, reimagining the use of time and space. Her art making under the pseudonym Guest-Host-Guest includes object installation\, collaborative events\, performative storytelling and interventions that unsettle the notion of archive through spatial exploration\, participation\, and the disruption of academic language. She holds a PhD investigating alternative art school spaces and serves as a Non-Executive Director and Board member of TOMA (The Other MA)\, an alternative art school in Southend-on-Sea\, Essex. Recent projects include workshops for New Contemporaries and Creative Break Time. She is currently Programme Leader of the Graduate Diploma in Art at Goldsmiths. \nThis workshop is open to all: makers\, artists\, writers\, anti-writers\, poets\, curators at any stage of their practice\, and anyone interested in finding alternative ways to speak about their work. It is especially useful if you are preparing portfolios\, applications\, or exhibitions\, or if you simply want your language to feel more natural and connected to what you do.  \nPlaces are limited to keep the session conversational and supportive—book early to secure your place. \nEarly Bird Rates are available until 29 March at 11:59pm GMT \n_\nImage: ‘Morass’ Mapping by Elle Reynolds

SUMMARY:Reframing dementia\, distress and inpatient care
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the University of West London on May 14\, 2026\, at 6:00 PM for an inspiring talk from Professor Emma Wolverson. Professor of Ageing and Dementia at the Geller Institute of Ageing and Memory. \nAs a clinical academic\, my programme of research challenges negative perceptions of dementia by focusing on people’s strengths and by supporting the clinical teams who care for them. My goal is to empower teams to develop and deliver evidence-based care to improve experiences and outcomes for people living with dementia and their families\, enabling health and social care professionals to respond to an individual’s needs with skill and empathy. My research programme draws on positive psychology to deliver this evidence. Building on these foundations\, my current National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) funded research programme focuses on the dementia crisis – particularly when a crisis leads to an emergency admission within an inpatient mental health ward\, a setting which cares for the most unwell\, vulnerable\, and high-risk people living with dementia. Being admitted can be frightening and overwhelming for both the person and their family. Stays are often long\, and many people do not return home afterwards.

SUMMARY:Why Ash Regan’s ‘Unbuyable’ bill is right for Scotland: Unravelling the myths around the Nordic Model
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted that Ash Regan\, independent MSP for Edinburgh Eastern\, will be joining us on Sunday\, 11 January for a webinar to discuss her Unbuyable bill. The bill seeks to lessen the harms from prostitution in Scotland through a holistic approach known as the Nordic Model. \nAsh will be joined by Venessa\, a survivor of the Scottish sex industry and Heli St Luce. The seminar will be introduced and chaired by Emily Husain. \nFollowing a short presentation by each speaker\, our panel will answer your questions\, which you can submit during the seminar or in advance by email. \nThe Unbuyable bill\, officially the Prostitution\, Offences and Support (Scotland) Bill\, reflects the Nordic Model approach to prostitution\, first introduced in Sweden in 1999. Here selling of sex by individual women is decriminalised\, but the buying of sexual services becomes a criminal offence. Crucially\, the Unbuyable bill also provides extensive support services for those wishing to exit prostitution and will clear any previous convictions a woman may have for soliciting. \nUnfortunately\, there are many myths around the Nordic model\, often circulated by organisations purporting to act in the best interests of sex workers. Some of these take the form of bad faith arguments\, others rely on falsifiable data\, while others still infantilise men or romanticise what is in reality a dangerous and unromantic activity. \nWhatever your views on the Unbuyable bill\, please join us for what will be an interesting and informative webinar. \nThe webinar is free\, but you need to register in advance. \nWebinar Details\nThis webinar will be hosted in Zoom and is expected to last about 90 minutes. We will email registered attendees shortly before the event with details of how to join. If you can’t see the email\, please check your spam folders. \nQuestions\nThere will be an option to submit questions during the event\, but you are welcome to email in advance any questions you would like our panellists to consider. Please put ‘Webinar Question’ in the subject line and email it to info@nordicmodelnow.org. Time constraints mean\, however\, that we will be limited in how many questions we can address. \nThis is a mixed event\nThis event is open to everyone. The event will include discussion of some difficult issues\, including male violence to women and children. We ask everyone\, but particularly men\, to be mindful of this and how members of the audience may find this triggering because it resonates with their own experiences of male violence. We ask everyone to be open and respectful. \nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/why-ash-regans-unbuyable-bill-is-right-for-scotland-tickets-1972612307513

SUMMARY:Wartime Christmas at the Royal Hospital Chelsea
DESCRIPTION:Christmas at the Royal Hospital Chelsea has long been a season of joy and tradition – from the stirring of the Christmas pudding to the ceremonial cutting of the festive cake\, and the moving Christmas service in the Hospital’s Chapel. \nBut behind the warmth of these celebrations lies a remarkable story of resilience. As we mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War\, join historian Martin Cawthorne for a poignant talk exploring how the Royal Hospital and its Chelsea Pensioners faced the challenges of wartime – even as bombs fell and rations tightened. \nDrawing from his acclaimed book The Royal Hospital Chelsea at War\, Martin will reflect on how the festive season unfolded during one of the darkest chapters in the Hospital’s history. Discover how Christmas became a symbol of hope\, compassion\, and duty on the Home Front\, even as the Hospital itself stood in the line of fire. \nThis is a moving and insightful event that honours the spirit of those who served – and those who kept the flame of Christmas burning through adversity. \nBook Christmas Entertainment in London

SUMMARY:Mapping Medieval Manuscripts (Talk)
DESCRIPTION:Mapping medieval manuscripts: how surviving romance manuscripts are aiding the search for People of Colour in North Atlantic medieval Europe \nMedieval manuscripts offer a unique window into the lives and imaginations of the past. Illuminated pages can point to wealthy patrons\, while the texts themselves reveal the interests and concerns of medieval readers. Some aspects of the medieval world\, however\, are less visible. Tracing the presence of People of Colour in North Atlantic medieval Europe is one such challenge. While representations exist\, the question remains: how can we locate the real people behind the stories?

SUMMARY:Albert Kner – Artist\, Icon\, Legend
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special evening celebrating the book Albert Kner: Artist\, Icon\, Legend: Discovering His Legacy in Industrial Design\, co-authored by Robert Elton Brooker III and Ádám Erdész. This beautifully produced volume brings long-overdue recognition to one of the 20th century’s unsung creative minds. \nAlbert Kner (1899–1976) was a Hungarian-American designer whose work shaped modern packaging and graphic design. From inventing the cardboard six-pack and the flip-top cigarette box to producing compelling stage sets\, furniture\, and printed matter\, Kner’s contribution to visual culture is both diverse and visionary\, yet remains largely unknown. \nThis event will contain a presentation by Robert Brooker III on Kner’s extraordinary life and career\, tracing his journey from early typographic experimentation in Hungary to his post-war success as Design Director for America’s largest cardboard manufacturer\, where he was tasked with an unusual but inspiring challenge: make cardboard beautiful. \nThe book includes 112 striking illustrations in black and white and full colour\, showcasing Kner’s elegant\, often ahead-of-his-time design work. As designer and author Bruce Kennett writes\, “Brooker and Erdész have done a superb job in presenting Kner’s remarkable life in all its phases… A wonderful book from start to finish.” \nDon’t miss this opportunity to rediscover a hidden gem of 20th-century design history – book your spot now.

SUMMARY:The Launching of the Mary: A Script-in-Hand Exploration
DESCRIPTION:THE LAUNCHING OF THE MARY: A Script-in-Hand Exploration\n  \n“The launching of a ship? This modern age\nhath seldom seen such action on a stage.”\n \nAlmost 400 years since it was written at sea\, come step into the riverside world of Walter Mountfort’s The Launching of the Mary. \n  \nDuring his ‘return from East India in 1632\, Walter Mountfort spent his idle hours writing a play. Set in a London shipyard\, complete with sprawling subplots and a range of colourful characters\, The Launching of the Mary immerses readers in a bustling riverside world. As shipyard artisans prepare to launch a ship\, while marine officers debate the ethics of overseas trade\, the mariner’s wife\, Dorotea Constance\, defends her home against a torrent of suitors. This workshop invites participants to explore this unknown Renaissance play through a lively but relaxed script-in-hand reading\, partly city comedy\, part domestic tragedy\, and part something else entirely. \nNo prior knowledge or performance experience is required to participate. A lightly abridged\, modern spelling edition of the play has been produced specially for this event\, and participants are invited to read\, listen\, or both. The session will conclude with a section for Q&A and the chance to reflect on the experience of encountering this curious play. \n  \nTuesday 6 May 2025\, 14:00-16:30 \nKeynes Library\, 43 Gordon Square\, London\, WC1H 0PD \nhttps://www.bbk.ac.uk/events/event/49292/the-launching-of-the-mary-a-script-in-hand-exploration
