SUMMARY:Homes\, Hauntedness & Belonging | Owl Bookshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special conversation about Homes\, Hauntedness and Belonging\, exploring what happens when the spectral enters the domestic and what haunted houses reveal about the worlds we inhabit. \nTogether\, Caitlin Blackwell Baines\, Essie Fox and Leon Craig will discuss how spectral encounters\, genre expectations and historical accounts can all be analysed to consider who belongs and who is left out. From Catherine’s clever feminist retelling of Wuthering Heights\, to The Decadence’s hedonistic nightmare holiday ensemble\, and How to Build a Haunted House’s erudite non-fiction journey from Strawberry Hill to Himeji Castle in Japan\, these works interrogate familiar ideas of hauntedness and the stories we tell about our homes. Whom do we exclude and whom do we welcome inside? How can the past and present coexist? \nAt heart\, haunted houses are never just about ghosts. They are also about ownership\, power\, memory and the cultural anxieties of the places and times in which they appear. Gather round for troublesome ghosts\, gothic drama and pre-Halloween atmosphere. \n  \n\n\n\n\nCaitlin Blackwell Baines is an art historian and author\, specialising in Georgian art and architecture. Born in Toronto\, she later emigrated to the UK to pursue an MA from the Courtauld Institute of Art and a PhD from the University of York in art history. Upon completing her studies\, she moved to the Isle of Bute off the Western coast of Scotland\, and worked as a curator at Mount Stuart\, a late Victorian Gothic Revival palace. When she isn’t visiting haunted houses and recording her ghost story-themed history podcast\, Haunted Homes\, Caitlin is based in East Sussex.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEssie Fox was born and raised in Herefordshire. Always an avid reader\, she now writes historical novels. Essie has appeared at many literary events\, including giving lectures at the V&A\, the Westminster Library\, and the National Gallery in London. She also hosts a podcast called Talking the Gothic. Essie’s debut\, The Somnambulist\, was shortlisted for the National Book Awards\, and featured on Channel 4’s TV Book Club. The Fascination was an instant Sunday Times Top Ten best seller. Dangerous\, a Regency crime thriller featuring Lord Byron\, has been selected as a Times Book of the Month … as have her other novels\, including the latest – Catherine: A retelling of Wuthering Heights.\n\n\n\n\nLeon Craig is the author of queer haunted house novel The Decadence (2025) and gothic short story collection Parallel Hells (2022) Leon’s work has also featured in Hazlitt\, Elsewhere: A Journal of Place and Berlin Babel anthology and her non-fiction has been published in the Sunday Times\, the TLS and the  Telegraph. Born in North London\, she now lives in Berlin.

SUMMARY:Viktorie Hanišová: The Mushroom Gatherer
DESCRIPTION:Why do Czechs love mushrooms so much? And what happens when the forest becomes a refuge from the rest of the world? Join acclaimed Czech novelist Viktorie Hanišová to celebrate the English-language publication of The Mushroom Gatherer (Houbařka)\, a compelling novel of solitude\, family\, memory and the longing for human connection. \nDeep in the Bohemian Forest\, Sára lives a life of her own making. For seven years\, she has followed the same woodland paths\, gathering mushrooms to sell and keeping the rest of the world at a safe distance. Her days are quiet\, solitary and meticulously ordered – until the death of her mother begins to unsettle everything she has tried to leave behind. \nAs Sára sorts through her baskets of chanterelles and boletes\, she is also forced to confront the memories\, wounds and complicated family ties that have shaped her life. The forest offers her freedom and refuge\, but it also becomes the place where the past catches up with her. \nIn conversation\, Hanišová will explore the novel’s themes of isolation\, vulnerability\, family and trauma\, as well as the distinctly Czech passion for mushroom picking. \nViktorie Hanišová is a Czech novelist\, translator\, and teacher\, widely regarded as one of the most distinctive voices of her generation. She studied English and German at Charles University in Prague and debuted in 2015 with the novel Anežka. Her subsequent books include The Mushroom Gatherer (as Houbařka\, 2018)\, Rekonstrukce (2019)\, the short story collection Dlouhá trať (2020)\, Beton a hlína (2021)\, and the novel Neděle odpoledne (2022). Her political novella Tvůj táta je v ohni is forthcoming in 2026. \nViktorie Hanišová\, The Mushroom Gatherer\, translated by Véronique Firkusny\, Seagull Books\, 2025\, 300p \nAdmission: £5 (+ Eventbrite fee) \nThis event is part of the 30th Made in Prague Festival organised by Czech Centre London
