SUMMARY:Under Red Skies: The Life and Times of a Chinese Millennial
DESCRIPTION:‘You can learn more about modern China through this compulsively readable memoir than from many weightier tomes.’ Barbara Demick\, former Beijing Bureau Chief of the Los Angeles Times and author of Nothing to Envy \nThe first English-language memoir from a Chinese millennial to be published. \nKaroline Kan was born in 1989\, the same year as the Tiananmen Square protests: her generation has always been caught between China’s political landscape\, its hyper-modern technology and urban and economic boom. \nThrough the stories of three generations of women in her family\, Kan provides us with a glimpse into the everyday lives of the country’s people against the backdrop of dizzingly rapid social change. Her grandmother – who struggled to make a way for her family during the Great Famine\, her mother – who defied the One-Child Policy by giving birth to Karoline\, and herself – born into a village peasant family but succeeding against all odds in gaining an education\, one that her mother and grandmother could scarcely have dreamed of. Kan will be in conversation with CEO of China Dialogue\, Isabel Hilton. \nThis will be Kan’s first London event and she will be signing copies of her book directly after the talk. \nAbout Karoline Kan\nKaroline Kan is a former New York Times reporter who writes about millennial life and politics in China. Currently an editor at China Dialogue\, she lives in Beijing. \nAbout Isabel Hilton\nIsabel Hilton is a London based writer and broadcaster and founder and CEO of chinadialogue.net.

Brian will once again be joined by co-host of The Infinite Monkey Cage and award-winning comedian Robin Ince to oversee an audience Q&A\, giving fans the chance to ask any questions they have and making every show unique. \nUsing state of the art graphics and imagery from ground-based telescopes and space probes\, presented using ultra-high-resolution LED screen technology\, Brian will explore the latest missions to the planets\, the nature of space and time from the Big Bang to black holes and the origin and fate of life and intelligence in the Universe. He will also address questions about the value of science\, how we acquire scientific knowledge and why we should trust it. Visual highlights will include a journey around and into a black hole\, created in partnership with Double Negative\, the four-time Academy Award-winning visual effects company responsible for creating the black hole effects in the movie Interstellar. \nProfessor Brian Cox said: “On the last tour I loved talking about astronomy and cosmology in very large venues that usually only host rock bands. The great advantage was the ability to use vast\, state of the art screens to display images of the cosmos as we’ve never seen them before. 30 meter-wide images from the Hobble Space Telescope are certainly something to behold. On this new tour\, I’m going to go a step further with the technology\, to the horror of my promoter because it’ll be bloody expensive. But it’ll be bloody spectacular as well\, and I hope it’ll offer people a completely new perspective on our place in the Universe.” \nBrian is Professor of Particle Physics at The University of Manchester\, The Royal Society Professor for Public Engagement in Science and a Fellow of the Royal Society. As a broadcaster\, he has presented a number of highly acclaimed science programmes for the BBC\, boosting the popularity of subjects such as astronomy and physics and garnering a host of accolades\, including two Royal Television Society awards and a Peabody Award for Wonders Of The Solar System. He has also authored a series of best-selling books\, including the widely acclaimed Human Universe and the recently released Universal: A Guide to the Cosmos\, and is recognised as the foremost communicator for all things scientific. His critically acclaimed BBC series\, Forces of Nature\, aired in 2016 whilst he recently once again co-hosted Stargazing Live. He holds two Guinness World Record titles for a science tour for his total sell-out debut tour\, which began in 2016 and saw over 150\,000 people attend in total\, including a sell-out show at Wembley Arena.

SUMMARY:In Bed With Karen Dobres
DESCRIPTION:In Bed with… is our new series of speakers at The Chambers\, the brand new Cocktail Bar at The Chamberlain. \nThe Chambers is kicking off its first ‘In Bed With’ session with Karen Dobres – Writer and Non-Exec Director of Lewes Football Club – the first pro club in the world where women are paid the same as men. \nKaren has a unique voice on the Lewes FC Board\, as before encountering Lewes FC’s equality initiative\, she had no interest in football whatsoever\, but now she is extremely passionate about equality in football and its impact on driving gender equality on a wider scale\, giving regular talks at business and sports conferences in the UK. \nThe Chambers invites you to enjoy an exclusive evening\, filled with entertainment\, education and elegant cocktails\, as Karen explores how football is levelling the playing field and becoming an engine for social change\, enabling people to tackle gender equality. \nWithout game quality\, there’s no platform for equality\, so you could say\, achieving gender equality in football is a balancing act\, a bit like making cocktails… \nKaren Dobres \nSince the introduction of the Equality FC campaign in July 2017\, Lewes FC became the first (and only) club in the world to treat its women’s and men’s teams equally. Same budget. Same stadium. Same facilities. Same support. Same everything. \nLewes FC was recently featured on The Sun for pioneering the first equal gender pay in football\, and won a ‘HeForShe’ award from UN Women UK in September this year for being ‘Inspirational in the Field of Gender Equality’. Over the last two seasons\, crowd figures for Lewes FC’s women’s games have quadrupled\, demonstrating the positive impact of equality. \nKaren has also created the club’s SisterShips programme which is building a network of women’s organisations keen to support the club in solidarity with its equality stance\, whilst the club promotes the member organisations’ work in return. This summer\, Karen wrote an article for Huff Post UK about how England’s Lionesses should be women’s role models.

Eleven days of public art festivities have been developed with community consultation\, with a diverse programme of events\, talks\, highlights\, installations and exhibits taking place throughout the Royal Borough. \nKCAW will present over a hundred participants\, including both emerging and world-class institutions and cultural practitioners\, to celebrate the artistic richness of the Borough. This year’s dynamic calendar of events will be the most extensive edition of KCAW to date. The programme includes murals and public artworks acknowledging the COVID-19 pandemic and paying tribute to the NHS. \nParticipants include the Design Museum\, The Great Exhibition Road Festival (GERF) collaboration with arts and science\, The Chelsea Theatre\, Kensington Town Hall\, Royal Society of Sculptors\, The Coronet Theatre\, Pavilion Hive in Notting Hill\, the Chelsea Arts Club\, White City Place\, and the Goldfinger Factory\, with many more to be announced. \nKCAW brings fresh dynamism to the area through its vibrant public art trails that also include self-guided tours designed to reveal hidden gems within food\, music theatre and history\, as well as exhibitions by hundreds of local galleries\, connecting eight culture zones in the Borough. It will be an opportunity to enjoy the area in greater depth and allow the public to discover and be guided through the extraordinary cultural cross-section of the historic area. The festival also coincides with National Poetry Day and there will be a chance to enjoy performances and readings as part of the programming. \nWith the cancellation of this year’s Frieze Art Fair\, KCAW will offer the capital a rich and diverse programme of cultural highlights for October. There has never been a more crucial time to support the vibrant art and culture of the capital and the festival has put social distancing measures in place to ensure public health and welfare and comply with government guidelines. These optimum safety measures will ensure a welcome opportunity for the public to support London’s artistic ventures.

SUMMARY:Almagul Menlibayeva || Yerbossyn Meldibekov
DESCRIPTION:For their first project in the UK\, Aspan Gallery present a duo exhibition by two of Central Asia’s most prominent contemporary artists\, Almagul Menlibayeva and Yerbossyn Meldibekov.\nThe exhibition title\, Almagul Menlibayeva: It’s Easy to Be a Line / Yerbossyn Meldibekov: It’s Difficult to Be a Point\, comes from a phrase by an important Soviet avant-garde artist Sergey Kalmykov (1891-1967): “It’s difficult to be a point – it’s easy to be a line\, as everything in our world is moving”. Kalmykov moved in the 1930s from Moscow to Almaty\, where he was able to paint his imaginary parallel universes with fantastical creatures\, far removed from the Socialist Realist constraints imposed by the Soviet State. Kalmykov was an important historical figure\, and whilst under recognised\, the fact of his existence itself had a tremendous impact on the development of the contemporary art scene in Central Asia. \nReserve en
