SUMMARY:384 Days
DESCRIPTION:384 Days is a one-woman\, tragic comedy. Set in a mental health unit\, it follows Molly O’Riordan\, an aspiring magician\, over the course of a 24-hour psychological evaluation. \nDuring these 24 hours\, Molly works on a trick that will change the face of magic forever\, whilst trying to persuade her psychiatrists that she’s fit for release. But\, in doing so\, she’s forced to confront a number of bitter truths about herself\, her father\, and the life that’s waiting for her back home – truths she’s tirelessly tried to detach herself from. \n384 Days is a bold and brave account of grief and endurance. It speaks to the absurdity of our coping mechanisms in the face of trauma\, and the relentless perseverance of the human spirit. \nUltimately\, it’s a tale of finding meaning\, connection\, joy\, and hope against all the odds.

SUMMARY:Sancho&Me – For One Night Only
DESCRIPTION:Charles Ignatius Sancho was born on a slave ship on the Atlantic Ocean in 1729\, yet he became a writer\, composer\, shopkeeper and respected ‘man of letters’ in 18th century London becoming the first man of African Heritage to vote in Britain. \nThis is the extraordinary story of an unlikely hero\, brought to life by actor and author Paterson Joseph\, who performs an enthralling account of one man’s remarkable life. Part-biography and part-dramatized readings from Paterson’s acclaimed novel ‘The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatius Sancho’\, Sancho&Me is an unmissable evening of storytelling with themes intersecting with Paterson’s own story of being Black and British.  This is a vital story connecting a Black Life in the transatlantic world from nearly three hundred years ago with a modern-day Black Life in today’s UK. Sancho’s music features during the piece and is arranged by the Musical Director Ben Park who joins Paterson on stage. \nSancho&Me – For One Night Only returns home and will have a special flavour tonight with an ensemble playing live on stage. It will be a true celebration of Ignatius Sancho’s life in music and word.  \n  \n\nPaterson Joseph’s novel ‘The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatius Sancho’ won the RSL Christopher Bland Prize and The Historical Writer’s Association Debut Novel Prize in 2023. Paterson most recently starred in the film Wonka and the BBC hit series Boat Story. \nThe team also comprises Co-Director and Designer\, Michael Vale and Costumier Linda Haysman. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis project is developed with the help of Strawberry Hill Enterprises at St Mary’s University\, Twickenham. \n\nContent warning: Sancho & Me explores ideas of belonging\, language\, education\, slavery\, commerce\, violence\, threat\, politics\, music and love.

SUMMARY:These Boots Are Made For Walkin’
DESCRIPTION:Polly Vinyl & The Plastic Boot Band Presents:  These Boots Are Made For Walkin’ \nA celebration of two decades of trail-blazing female singers and songwriters \nThese Boot are Made for Walkin’– after Nancy Sinatra’s iconic song from 1966 – is a dynamic show celebrating the fabulous tunes from this era of musical empowerment. If you love powerful songs from the late sixties and seventies\, with big soulful female vocals and harmonies\, then this is an experience not to be missed! \n\nThe girl group phenomenon of the early 1960s was a product of a predominantly male music-business\, which fitted artists into traditional stereotypes… Doe-eyed young women singing about their hopeless devotion to their handsome\, straying men\, forgiving them in the name of love. Then things began to change; in 1964 a teenage girl appeared on American TV alongside predominantly male acts from the ‘rock n roll’ hall of fame: Chuck Berry\, James Brown\, Marvin Gaye\, The Beach Boys and The Rolling Stones. She stepped up to the mic and began to sing her latest hit single\, “Maybe I Know.” The lyrics suggested that she knew her boyfriend had been unfaithful\, “But what can I do?” she crooned. Then\, suddenly Gore began to sing another song… “You don’t own me\, I’m not just one of your many toys.” She seemingly gave a satisfied smile as she belt-out\, “Don’t tell me what to do… Don’t tell me what to say”. Her name was Lesley Gore. \nAnd so began the first wave of bold young women\, who knew that music belonged to them. The door opened for others to find their voices in a time of social change. A man still loved a woman\, and a woman still loved a man\, but sisters were doing it for themselves. Women began to sing about making the same choices\, mistakes\, and regrets as their male counterparts. It led to a decade\, and more\, of gutsy women with soulful voices\, challenging pre-conceived ideas\, and rocking the charts with heart and soul.

SUMMARY:The Luminous
DESCRIPTION:Part Victorian thriller\, part contemporary tale of friendship and rebellion\, this time-travelling\, genre-busting new show combines RedCape Theatre’s unique blend of physical theatre\, dark comedy and gripping storytelling. \nAs protestors gather outside the hospital where they work\, three women meet up for a monthly book club. This month’s book is ‘Luminous’ – a dark delve into Victorian London\, where lurid stories are brought to life for entertainment in the penny gaff theatres: tales of an anonymous killer haunting the city and women whose bones glow through their skin. \nIn the twenty-first century living room\, the wine is flowing and the discussion is getting heated. Mighty thinks the book is outrageous\, Mags thinks it’s the best thing she’s ever read\, and Alice hasn’t got past page three. As the women get drawn deeper into the story\, memories surface\, unexpected connections are made\, and the worlds begin to blur.  Age Guidance: 14+ years \nContent warning: \nAge Guidance: 14+ years.  This production explores sensitive themes of violence against women (physical and sexual)\, abortion\, illness and grief\, and includes scenes that some audience members may find upsetting. It contains references to childbirth\, self-immolation and nuclear warfare. It also contains strong language\, ableist and misogynistic language and an abstract depiction of an autopsy. \n

SUMMARY:War with the Newts
DESCRIPTION:A brand new adaptation of Karel Čapek’s timeless satirical sci-fi classic about a new super-breed trying to conquer the world. Adapted and directed as a dissertation project by Kazue Horimasu\, an MFA Theatre Directing student at East 15 Acting School and performed by East 15 alumni and student actors from Czechia\, the USA\, the UK\, China\, Lithuania and Japan \n~Harness the Newts and Ride out the Great Depression!~ \nThe Great Depression\, which began in 1929\, ravaged not just the USA and Europe but the entire globe. Humanity found survival by exploiting the highly intelligent Newts. Eventually\, the thriving human race became dependent on them. Yet\, the Newts initiated a significant retaliation. How do we navigate this? Various nations’ desires collided. What path should the world have taken in this turbulent era? \nOriginally published in 1936\, this work is newly revived as a warning for our times. \n\n24\, 25 & 27 Sep 2024\, 7 pm\nCzech Embassy Cinema\, 26-30 Kensington Palace Gardens\, London W8 4QY\nFree of Charge\, BOOKING NECESSARY\nRecommended for ages 12+\nAn audience Q&A will follow this event.\nDoors will open from 6:45 pm.\nPlease bring your Photo ID to be let into the Embassy premises(a legally recognised ID).\n\nFurther information about the project ↓ \nhttps://engekikikaku-aru.jimdofree.com/war-with-the-newts/ \n

SUMMARY:Wall To Wall Prince
DESCRIPTION:A unique celebration of the music of Prince. Drawing on his incredible catalogue of songs this show pays homage to perhaps the most influential artist of his generation. \nFeaturing David McAlmont and Imaani \nWith Musical Direction from our Artist in Residence\, Janette Mason\, whose unique interpretations of Prince\, Bowie and many more have been receiving rave reviews. For example… \n“The flame-haired Janette Mason\, musical director\, took ownership of the set. In addition to being a rousing keyboardist\, Mason boasts formidable skill as a composer\, producer\, and arranger– toying with the arrangements and sometimes entirely reinventing them. She has the uncanny knack of undoing a song by its seams and reconceptualising it with brazen originality. \nIndeed\, Mason was not afraid to take fan-favourites and render them almost unrecognisable. The song I was least looking forward to\, the karaoke staple ‘Kiss’\, was a standout performance thanks to Mason’s slowed-down jazz arrangement\, transporting the audience to the 1950s. Moreover\, ‘Little Red Corvette’ became a country mid-tempo and ‘Raspberry Beret’ a celebratory reggae joint – renamed ‘Guyana Beret’. ‘When Doves Cry’ was also given the bassline unusually absent from the original recording. As singer David McAlmont described\, Mason doesn’t arrange songs\, she ‘de-ranges’ them.” \n \nDavid McAlmont \nDavid  is possibly one of the greatest singers this country has produced. He has collaborated with everyone from Bond composer David Arnold to Michael Nyman\, Paul Weller and most famously with Bernard Butler\, producing the hit single Yes. David’s music is pure emotion\, drawing unique\, soulful portraits from his own life and philosophies\, all beautifully framed by the finest soul. \nImaani \nGracing stages across the world Imaani’s live career is impressive. She has performed on television\, in the studio\, and live with artists including Nile Rodgers\, Chaka Khan\, Maceo Parker\, Philip Bailey\, Jimmy Cliff\, UB40\, Gloria Gaynor\, Incognito\, Betty Wright\, Omar\, Mica Paris\, Stephen Marley\, Julian Marley\, Leon Ware and Aswad. \n“One of the most wonderful and memorable voices…” Bluey \nBand Line-Up: \nBass – Simon Little \nDrums – Nico Py \nSax – Andy Ross \nGuitar – Dave Ital

SUMMARY:Maar\, Dora
DESCRIPTION:Following on from a sold out debut run at the Old Red Lion Theatre earlier this year\, Dora Maar is back for more. \nDora Maar (1907-1997) was a prolific photographer\, hailing as one of the first artists in the surrealist movement. However in today’s conversations\, her name only appears after a man’s: the infamous Pablo Picasso. He needs no introduction (and we are not inclined to give one). History holds Dora’s romantic involvement with him as the only memorable thing about her\, but in this play\, Dora is here to tell you differently. Delving into the deepest depths of her career\, and his cruelty\, battling to escape the association with Picasso that looms over her\, and face the question of whether erasing him from her legacy would inevitably mean erasing herself further. \n“DELICIOUSLY SNARKY… ONSTAGE MAGIC” – Fringebiscuit\n“TENSE\, EXHILARATING AND INSTRUCTIVE” – The Quinntessential Review \nWritten and created by Nadia Jackson\nDirected by Spiky Saul\nProduced by Amar Singh \nFollow us on instagram – @maar.dora.theplay \nhttps://spiksaul.wixsite.com/maardora-2 \nSundays 4 and 18 August – 3:00pm \n\n\n\n\nRunning time:\n\n60 minutes\n\n\n\n\n\n14+ age guidance \nContent warnings: Includes themes of domestic violence

SUMMARY:Northbound Boy
DESCRIPTION:A new queer comedy starring Neil Ashton (It’s A Sin)\, Sarah Moyle (Doctors) and a stage debut from Heartstoppers’ Cormac Hyde-Corrin. They say all roads lead to Rome\, but the M64 leads to a ransacked family home and a mouse drowned in bisto. When 40 year old Ken picks up a younger man at the service station\, he soon realises Rory is looking for a different type of ride. After a short drive to Ken’s recently inherited home\, Rory makes a play for Ken’s family jewels\, only to discover Aunt Ivy’s already been in and whisked them away. This home certainly isn’t where his heart is\, and it’s not just the skeletons coming out of the closet. Northbound Boy is a queer comedy by James Hogan about a boy that steals your heart\, an aunt that steals your heirlooms and the value of what remains when everything else is gone. \nListings information: \nThe King’s Head Theatre\, 116 Upper St\, London N1 1QP \n13th – 18th August Tues – Fri 7pm\, Sat – Sun 6pm \n20th – 25th August Tues – Thurs 7pm\, Sat – Sun 6pm \n26th August – 1st September Mon – Thurs 7pm\, Sat 6pm\, Sun 3pm \n£30.00 – £22.50 (concs) | http://www.kingsheadtheatre.com | 0207 226 8561 \n  \nRuntime: 1 hr 15 m | Content Warnings: Drugs (Mild References) Sex\, Homophobia \nAge Guidance: 14+ \n
