SUMMARY:Talk: The Invention of British Art - Chelsea History Festival
DESCRIPTION:You have to try really hard\, it seems\, to like British art. Even its admirers concede it has contributed little to world art history. Tate\, the closest thing we have to a gallery of British art\, assigns less than a quarter of its display space to works made before 1900. Outside Britain\, only one gallery in the whole world is dedicated to British art\, in Yale. Few people visit it. \nWhy is British art so overlooked? Is it because Britain itself has never been enthusiastic about art\, and indeed remains ill at ease with it today? Is it\, quite simply\, bad? Or has British art suffered an injustice\, its impact on the world unfairly disregarded? \nNone of these questions can be answered without a frank reassessment of the history of British art\, those who made it\, and those it was made for. Now\, leading art historian Bendor Grosvenor is taking on that challenge. Looking at key moments\, objects and individuals from every era\, he explores how they were shaped by their environment\, and why – above all – it took so long for the art from theses isles to actually become ‘British’. \nFrom folk art to the role of female artists\, from the influences of invaders to the territories of the British Empire\, the story of British art is just as much a story of Britain’s place in the world\, and its impact upon it\, as the art and artists themselves. \nBendor Grosvenor is an art historian specialising in Old Masters and British art. Best known from the BBC series ‘Britain’s Lost Masterpieces’ and ‘Fake or Fortune?’\, he has discovered a number of important paintings by prominent artists including Van Dyck\, Rubens\, Titian\, Gainsborough\, Beale and Lawrence.

SUMMARY:Women in Focus: Sara Polak
DESCRIPTION:The guest of the next edition of the Czech Centre’s Women in Focus series will be Sara Polak\, an archaeologist\, evolutionary anthropologist\, and technology innovator whose work bridges the humanities and cutting-edge AI research. \nPolak is a co-founder of the Mobilis Institute and the blockchain educational platform ShellProof\, a Visiting Research Fellow and part-time lecturer at the University of Oxford\, and leads the CCHAOS Research group at the Faculty of Information Technology\, Czech Technical University. Her focus lies in the digitisation of cultural heritage and the simulation of civilisational dynamics. Having spent much of her career in the UK and the USA tech sectors\, Polak is passionate about connecting modern technologies with the humanities. She has been named on Forbes’ 30 Under 30\, was recognised as a Top Innovator (2022)\, and received the Business Revolution Award from the UK Department for International Trade. She believes that only through education and interdisciplinary collaboration can humanity fulfil its potential — and perhaps one day survive on Mars. She explores these ideas through the Civilisational Resilience think tank\, which she co-founded. \nIn her talk Archaeology and AI: the last hope for our survival?\, Sara Polak will explore how civilisational resilience — the ability of societies to endure\, adapt\, and thrive through both crises and everyday pressures — increasingly depends on the synergy between technology and the humanities. She will examine how artificial intelligence and archaeology can enrich our understanding of past societies and offer strategies for a more sustainable future. By combining AI-driven archaeological research with humanistic insight\, we can preserve cultural heritage\, learn from historical adaptations\, and help shape ethical\, resilient technologies for generations to come. \nAdmission: £5 (+ Eventbrite fee)\nBook Here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/women-in-focus-sara-polak-tickets-1372620447709?aff=oddtdtcreator

SUMMARY:Havel Speaking\, Can You Hear Me? + Q&A Petr Jančárek
DESCRIPTION:A multilayered portrait of Czech dissident playwright turned head of state\, who became a political icon while retaining his insight\, humour\, and dedication to public service. In 2009\, Havel invited director Petr Jančárek to film “The rest of his life\,” granting unlimited access and creative freedom. For nearly three years\, Jancarek captured Havel’s life\, juxtaposing it with scenes from his play Leaving\, which Havel was filming. The resulting time-lapse documentary follows Havel from meetings with world leaders to hoovering at his cottage and drumming at festivals. With Havel as the sole speaker\, the documentary reflects on his political legacy and universal human issues with absolute openness through previously unseen footage. \nPetr Jančárek\, Czech Republic\, 2023\, 87‘ \nJi.hlava International Documentary Film Festival 2023\nOne World Festival 2024 \nThe screening marks this year‘s 35th anniversary of the 1989 Velvet Revolution. \nThe screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Petr Jančárek chaired by Gareth Evans. \nPetr Jančárek (1959) is a Czech director\, screenwriter\, cinematographer and producer specialising in documentary filmmaking. He has worked as an editor for Czech Television\, participated in several humanitarian missions and received the Ferdinand Peroutka Award. He teaches at the Silesian University in Opava. \nGareth Evans is a London-based writer\, editor\, film/event curator\, producer\, host\, and documentary mentor. He works on special projects for the London Review of Books and curates their Screen at Home series. From 2012 – 2023\, he was the Adjunct Moving Image Curator at the Whitechapel Gallery. SUMMARY:Active Involvement in Research (AIRD) 2024: in person event
DESCRIPTION:The annual Active Involvement in Research event brings together patients\, service users\, carers and local people\, researchers\, health and care professionals and organisations\, in south London and beyond. \nThe theme this year is: ‘Improving health and care in south London\, shaping future research.’ \nFor several years\, Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) South London has carried out research on how various types of health and social care might be improved and inequalities tackled. \nStaff\, public contributors\, community and other partners have worked hard to successfully understand and achieve change for local people who experience a range of issues. This includes those with multiple conditions and those facing disadvantage and discrimination which affects their wellbeing. But many south Londoners are still at risk and face barriers to getting the treatment and support they need. \nThis year\, Active Involvement in Research will look at: \n\nWhat the focus of future work should be from April 2026 to March 2031\, if funding is available\nHow can we\, our community and other partners build on local strengths and direct limited resources to address current challenges in useful ways? This includes not duplicating what other research teams and organisations are doing or have done\nHow can we further develop active involvement\, and recognise the value of lived experience\, in future research?\n\nThis is the first of two events. It will be held in person on 13 November 2024. The Active Involvement in Research: online event will follow on 18 November 2024. \nYou are welcome to join us at either or both events to hear about thinking to date and share your own views\, which will help to shape future research. Further information will follow\, but places are limited so it is advisable to book early. \nAttendance is free and all are welcome. \nFind out more \n\nTo find out more about the event\, please email involvement coordinator savitri.hensman@kcl.ac.uk. You can also visit www.arc-sl.nihr.ac.uk\nPlease note: payments will be made to public members who have an agreed role.

SUMMARY:Women in Art Fair
DESCRIPTION:Women in Art Fair is dedicated to redressing the gender imbalance in the art industry. It offers a positive global platform from which female artists\, curators\, and gallerists can show their work and contribute to the developing exchange of ideas around gender\, sexuality\, and culture.\n\nDuring Frieze week\, it will show work by 70 women and those identifying as women\, selected from an Open Call\, alongside an invited selection of artists and contemporary galleries who prioritise female artists.\n\nA spotlight section entitled “Women’s Cycles”\, curated by Virginia Damtsa will sit at the heart of the show\, showing work by six emerging and more established international artists.  She explains that the exhibition will “delve into the biological\, emotional\, psychological and cultural cycles that shape the female experience\, connecting viewers with both the universal and deeply personal aspects of womanhood.”\n\nA high-profile talks programme will run during the fair\, with speakers from around the world\, including Saudi Arabia’s Manal AlDowayan\, who represented her country at the Venice Biennale this year; leading female art collector Basma Al Sulaiman; living sculptor Daniel Lismore; and India’s leading contemporary art dealer\, Aparajita Jain.
