SUMMARY:The Hours (New Wave: Lunchtime Concert)
DESCRIPTION:A costumed song recital with Maryam Wocial (soprano) and Archie Bonham (piano) exploring the mysteries of self-consciousness through the writings of Virginia Woolf and other acclaimed authors. \nThe programme aims to convey what it means to be conscious – a quality often thought to be what differentiates humans from other living beings. A broad range of literary styles will be set to music\, including poetry\, prose\, and diary entries. The programme is bookended by songs from Dominick Argento’s cycle ‘From the Diary of Virginia Woolf’ which explores the private writings of Virginia Woolf whose stream-of-consciousness approach is marked through swift changes in subject matter – from war to parental relationships to the recipe for tonight’s dinner! Some songs reflect on shared societal experience whilst others illustrate private mental dialogues. Throughout\, there is a contrast between the public and the personal\, and listeners are reminded that they can only look at consciousness from a distance and not truly understand all its mysteries. A brief voyage à France is facilitated by two songs about hotels before the singer returns home\, being caught in the nostalgia of childhood memories until becoming intensely aware of the present moment. \nPart of Bloomsbury Festival’s New Wave programme\, a platform for emerging talent.

SUMMARY:Michael Ormerod: Vanishing Point Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition ‘Michael Ormerod: Vanishing Point’ is the first exhibition on this unique photographer for almost 20 years. \nMichael Ormerod (1947-1991) was a British photographer with a distinctive and powerful voice. His career was tragically cut short on August 7th\, 1991\, in a road accident on his last field trip to the USA. \nHe is known for his striking and evocative images capturing American landscapes and urban scenes. His work often depicted the raw\, gritty reality of life in America\, showcasing its beauty and challenges. Ormerod’s photography gained recognition for its powerful storytelling and unique perspective on the American experience. \nHis legacy continues influencing contemporary photographers\, and his work remains highly regarded in the photography community. Despite this\, only one major exhibition of his work has taken place over the last 33 years\, in 2003. \nSince his untimely death in 1991\, Ormerod’s work has been held at the Millennium Picture Library in London. At a family event in 2012\, celebrating his life and photographic work\, his daughter Ali had a wonderful conversation with one of Ormerod’s closest friends\, fellow photographer Geoff Weston. \nThis conversation led to a shared intention: to return to the archive and revisit his photographic legacy. We have since discovered a trove of previously unseen negatives from Ormerod’s trips to America. Working closely with the help of Alan Thoburn\, over a decade\, we have cherished the opportunity to consider these previously unseen images and curate a new collection that deserves public display. \nThanks to the generous donations to a Kickstarter campaign\, we are able to present this body of Ormerod’s never-before-seen work to a wider audience. \nJoin us in appreciating his legacy. \nPlease note that for Sunday openings the gallery will close at 4pm instead of 6pm.

Three immersive workshops will run throughout\nthe day\, where participants can create bunting and placards that will be displayed in Gabriel’s Wharf\nthroughout September. These workshops will be guided by a local artist as well as spoken word poet\,\nTia Camilleri\, who will help generate powerful messages that add an additional layer of meaning to the\nartwork. \nSaturday 28th September will be focused on live music. In addition to a diverse line-up of\nprofessional musical acts\, including singers\, musicians and bands\, there will also be performances\nfrom a roaming Shakespearean troupe. \nAcross both days\, roaming actors\, musicians (and acrobats from Badoosh circus theatre company)\nwill be bringing Gabriel’s Wharf to life with impromptu performances – delighting guests with surprise\nencounters. DJ duo\, Double Agent 7\, (renowned for playing floor-fillers exclusively on vinyl 45s) will\nensure a vibrant atmosphere while performances from comedians will bring additional smiles and\nlaughter. \nWhilst enjoying the festival\, guests can also browse the independent shops and meet the creative\nmakers who have made Gabriel’s Wharf their home (including Liz and Frances from Potters’ Yard Arts\,\nLisette from Gabu Chocolate\, and a wealth of other artists from Southbank Printmakers and Skylark\nGalleries. \nGabriel’s Wharf Arts Festival is designed to grab attention and bring this often overlooked but beloved\npart of London into the spotlight. With two jam-packed days of creativity\, performance\, and\ncommunity\, it’s the perfect cure for post-Summer Holiday blues that will also give London locals and\nvisitors alike\, a chance to explore a destination they may not even know exists.

SUMMARY:Book Launch: In Search of Giants: The Quest to Find the Genetic Giants of Northern Ireland
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the book launch for In Search of Giants: The Quest to Find the Genetic Giants of Northern Ireland by Colleen Snyder and Brendan Holland set for release on September 10\, 2024\, in London at the Hunterian Museum. In Search of Giants intertwines patient stories\, historical accounts\, and scientific findings to unravel the mysteries of genetic gigantism caused by a rare AIP genetic mutation that originated in Northern Ireland. The book tells the story of London Professor Márta Korbonits’ genetic research in Northern Ireland that connected ancient legends with contemporary scientific discoveries\, showing how a 2000-year-old genetic mutation still causes gigantism today. SUMMARY:SCREENSAVER + ME LOST ME + MARCEL WAVE
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm label showcase featuring… \nSCREENSAVER\nME LOST ME\nMARCEL WAVE\nWednesday 14 August\nCafe OTO\, 18-22 Ashwin St\, London\, E8 3DL\n7.30pm | £11 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/Q72f781acc64 \nSCREENSAVER is finally making its way to Europe and the UK this August. The Melbourne synth-punks blend the dark and moody elements of post-punk and new wave with synth sounds\, both caustic and cosmic\, to create a sound that is tense\, direct\, and often undeniably danceable. Their sophomore album ‘Decent Shapes’ was released in late 2023 on Upset The Rhythm to critical acclaim\, with praise from Rolling Stone\, Post-Trash and Maximum Rock’n’Roll. With extensive US and Aussie tours already under their belt\, the band is excited to make it to the UK and EU for the first time.\nhttps://screensaver.bandcamp.com/ \nME LOST ME delights in experimenting with songwriting and storytelling\, creating a beguiling mix of soaring vocals and atmospheric electronics that playfully push the boundaries of genre. Led by Newcastle-based artist Jayne Dent\, who takes influence from folk\, art pop\, noise\, ambient and improvised music\, the project has transformed since 2017 from a solo endeavour to an expanded group\, regularly collaborating with acclaimed North-East jazz musicians Faye MacCalman and John Pope. Me Lost Me’s music has been described in The Guardian as “stripping folk back to its bones while letting its future echoes bleed out”\, and by BBC Radio 6’s Tom Robinson as a “brilliant peculiar noise”. Me Lost Me’s latest RPG album was released last summer on Upset The Rhythm.\nhttps://www.melostme.com/ \nMarcel Waves writes eulogies for tragic actresses\, ancient riverbeds\, and concrete obscenity. Their inaugural sonic instalment\, ‘Something Looming’ (Upset The Rhythm)\, is part of a trades club symphony\, itchy serenade\, and wistful lament. As their heady concoction of ‘Meades meets Pat-E-Smith meets Kirklees Borough Council’ gets prepped to be formally baptised on a dank stage near you. Formed when Lindsay Corstorphine and Christopher Murphy of Sauna Youth and brethren Oliver and Patrick Fisher of Cold Pumas were summoned by northern ink-slinger Maike Hale-Jones\, Marcel Wave’s debut offering is a walk through a smoke-filled pub with yellowing wallpaper and all eyes on you. It’s a chronicle of the death of the docklands\, the decline of industry\, the high street\, civic pride\, civilisations\, hopes and dreams.\nhttps://marcel-wave.bandcamp.com

SUMMARY:Hex Sells!
DESCRIPTION:“We are the grand-daughters of the witches you didn’t burn!”. Big mistake. Huge! \nWhat is it about the ‘Witch’ that fascinates us so? Did the witch hunts ever really die? \nIn the 15th century\, witches were accused of hexing cows\, eating babies and even stealing the penises of innocent men! \nIn 2024\, witch hunts may look a bit different\, but we may recognise them if we’re really willing to notice how they’ve changed their form. \nThrough cabaret\, grotesque burlesque\, spoken word\, and lipsync\, this modern witch shares with the audience who she really is\, if you’re willing to learn from her. What will the witch say next? Who are we told she is\, and who is she really? \nHex Sells! is a one woman/witch unapologetic feminist extravaganza of a show! Created and performed by Allie Young and directed by Abby Ferree. \n“Touching\,humorous and heartbreaking.” \n“Fun\, weird and had some important messages.” \n“I would follow her into the deepest darkest forest” \n“Such a fun show!” \n“The poetry rocked and the lip-syncs were tight.”

SUMMARY:Theatrical Ceramics & Sculptural String
DESCRIPTION:In an unlikely collaboration\, Essex-born award winning ceramicist David Millidge and Brighton’s own alternative goth sculptor Sam Jacobs\, unite their contrasting art forms to create a cohesive experience that is both theatrical and tactile. \nMillidge\, known for his distinctive figurative ceramic sculptures\, offers his new works ‘The Precious Orbs Collection’ a glimpse into a world where each unique\, handmade ceramic sculpture boasts intricate patterns and forms\, inviting viewers to ponder the delicate balance between beauty and functionality. \nSam challenges perceptions with her self-supporting sculptures crafted from string and rope through macramé and fisherman’s knotting techniques. Her works are a testament to the strength found in vulnerability\, reflecting her personal journey and the environment that shapes her.
