SUMMARY:Mark Thomas: Gaffa Tapes
DESCRIPTION:Following a recent step towards theatre in his last few shows\, Mark Thomas is back to his finest stand-up form and anti-Tory sentiment in Gaffa Tapes as he takes his tour to the Leicester Square Theatre! \nMark’s now famous mix of standup\, theatre\, journalism and the odd bout of performance art has made him one of our oldest surviving alternative comics. Often referred to as the ‘godfather of political comedy’ (among many other things)\, Mark has been performing comedy for nearly 40 years. \nIf you don’t know what Mark does\, ask your parents. In his time\, he has won 8 awards for performing\, 3 for human rights work… and one he invented for himself. He has made six series of the Mark Thomas Comedy Product and 3 Dispatches for Channel 4\, made five series of the Manifesto for Radio 4\, written five books and 4 play scripts\, curated and authored two art exhibitions with artist Tracey Moberly and was commissioned to write a show for the Royal Opera House. He has forced a politician to resign\, changed laws on tax and protest\, become the Guinness Book of Records world record holder for a number of protests in 24 hours\, taken the police to court three times and won (the fourth is in the pipeline)\, walked the length of the Israeli Wall in the West Bank (that’s 724km)\, and generally mucked about trying to have fun and upset (shall we say) the right people.

SUMMARY:The Overcoat
DESCRIPTION:An enchanting Christmas family theatre show for ages four and up. \nJoin the Dept of Very Important Investigations as they solve the mystery in their own comical style. \nIn the snowy streets of a festive town\, Akaki is a humble clerk who resists change\, clinging to his small routines and simple pleasures. He’s perfectly happy with his old coat\, despite its many patches\, but as Christmas approaches\, the coat has become too worn to keep him warm. When a tailor declares\, “There’s nothing left to stitch\,” Akaki must buy a new coat—a decision that will change his life. \nWith the first snowfall\, Akaki’s new coat brings both joy and unexpected challenges\, leading him on an unforgettable journey. Through enchanting shadow puppetry and an original score\, The Overcoat becomes a visual treat for audiences\, capturing the season’s warmth and reminding us of the simple power of kindness.

SUMMARY:SOGYA
DESCRIPTION:he Avieli Arthouse are proud to present our inaugural production; we invite you to venture into the past\, ‘re-become’ history\, and reclaim lost legacies that can restore the wounds of African erasure. \nSOGYA is a lyrical epic of crisis\, heroism and cultural reclamation; a visceral theatrical experience commemorating Commonwealth soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the Second World War. Created by Patrick Bayele\, SOGYA is inspired by Patrick’s great-uncle; a member of the Dagaaba tribe and Dagaare-speaking peoples in the Northern Territories of the ‘Gold Coast’ (the British colony which became Ghana after achieving its independence). Conscripted into the British military and deployed in the 1944 Burma Campaign\, he became known amongst his community as ‘Sogya’ – the Dagaare word for ‘soldier’. \nResearched and developed in the UK and Ghana\, SOGYA weaves together archival research\, unheard testimony and Afro-centric physical theatre\, to unravel a compelling account of companionship\, memory and survival. SOGYA explores the triumphs and tragedies endured by young men pushed beyond their limits and plunged into chaos. Their sacrifices have been forgotten\, lost or erased\, yet reveal the depths of our humanity\, and what it means to become a hero amidst suffering. \nSuitable for ages 11+. \nPart of Bloomsbury Festival’s New Wave programme\, a platform for emerging talent. New Wave Theatre supported by Bishop & Sewell. \nPlease note: This venue is wheelchair accessible but floors may be uneven in parts. There are no audience toilet facilities located at the venue. \nContent Warning: This production contains references to racism and violence\, and depictions of ‘Shell Shock’ (clinically referred to as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder).\n \n\n\n\nHoly Cross Church\, WC1H 8JU \nFri 25 Oct 2024 7:30 PM – 8:30 PM \nSat 26 Oct 2024 6:30 PM- 7:30 PM and 8:30 PM – 9:30 PM

SUMMARY:Haddock by Max Raeburn (Radio Play)
DESCRIPTION:(As part of Bloomsbury Festival) This radio play chronicles the lives of people living within an Irish Harbour Town in the 1950s. It is a comedy that mimics a folk tale\, and features a couple questioning their faith in their religion\, each other and themselves. \nWe see Mary and Frank at 3 different but equally significant points in their relationship. Frank\, a lonesome and troubled fisherman\, wrestles with his own inadequacies that prevent him from truly committing himself to that which is important in his life. Mary\, a folk-tale obsessive that longs for a life at sea\, is imprisoned in mundanity and a marriage that is devoid of faith. Things come to a head when Frank brings home a fish for dinner that he curiously did not catch. \nPart of Bloomsbury Festival’s New Wave programme\, a platform for emerging talent. \nTickets and Show Information:  https://bloomsburyfestival.org.uk/events/haddock/ \nRunning Time: 35mins \nListings information: \nOctober 24\, 2024 7:00 pm – 7:35 pm \nRadio broadcast on Bloomsbury Radio \nFREE

SUMMARY:The Hours (New Wave: Lunchtime Concert)
DESCRIPTION:A costumed song recital with Maryam Wocial (soprano) and Archie Bonham (piano) exploring the mysteries of self-consciousness through the writings of Virginia Woolf and other acclaimed authors. \nThe programme aims to convey what it means to be conscious – a quality often thought to be what differentiates humans from other living beings. A broad range of literary styles will be set to music\, including poetry\, prose\, and diary entries. The programme is bookended by songs from Dominick Argento’s cycle ‘From the Diary of Virginia Woolf’ which explores the private writings of Virginia Woolf whose stream-of-consciousness approach is marked through swift changes in subject matter – from war to parental relationships to the recipe for tonight’s dinner! Some songs reflect on shared societal experience whilst others illustrate private mental dialogues. Throughout\, there is a contrast between the public and the personal\, and listeners are reminded that they can only look at consciousness from a distance and not truly understand all its mysteries. A brief voyage à France is facilitated by two songs about hotels before the singer returns home\, being caught in the nostalgia of childhood memories until becoming intensely aware of the present moment. \nPart of Bloomsbury Festival’s New Wave programme\, a platform for emerging talent.

SUMMARY:Michael Ormerod: Vanishing Point Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition ‘Michael Ormerod: Vanishing Point’ is the first exhibition on this unique photographer for almost 20 years. \nMichael Ormerod (1947-1991) was a British photographer with a distinctive and powerful voice. His career was tragically cut short on August 7th\, 1991\, in a road accident on his last field trip to the USA. \nHe is known for his striking and evocative images capturing American landscapes and urban scenes. His work often depicted the raw\, gritty reality of life in America\, showcasing its beauty and challenges. Ormerod’s photography gained recognition for its powerful storytelling and unique perspective on the American experience. \nHis legacy continues influencing contemporary photographers\, and his work remains highly regarded in the photography community. Despite this\, only one major exhibition of his work has taken place over the last 33 years\, in 2003. \nSince his untimely death in 1991\, Ormerod’s work has been held at the Millennium Picture Library in London. At a family event in 2012\, celebrating his life and photographic work\, his daughter Ali had a wonderful conversation with one of Ormerod’s closest friends\, fellow photographer Geoff Weston. \nThis conversation led to a shared intention: to return to the archive and revisit his photographic legacy. We have since discovered a trove of previously unseen negatives from Ormerod’s trips to America. Working closely with the help of Alan Thoburn\, over a decade\, we have cherished the opportunity to consider these previously unseen images and curate a new collection that deserves public display. \nThanks to the generous donations to a Kickstarter campaign\, we are able to present this body of Ormerod’s never-before-seen work to a wider audience. \nJoin us in appreciating his legacy. \nPlease note that for Sunday openings the gallery will close at 4pm instead of 6pm.

In addition to a diverse line-up of\nprofessional musical acts\, including singers\, musicians and bands\, there will also be performances\nfrom a roaming Shakespearean troupe. \nAcross both days\, roaming actors\, musicians (and acrobats from Badoosh circus theatre company)\nwill be bringing Gabriel’s Wharf to life with impromptu performances – delighting guests with surprise\nencounters. DJ duo\, Double Agent 7\, (renowned for playing floor-fillers exclusively on vinyl 45s) will\nensure a vibrant atmosphere while performances from comedians will bring additional smiles and\nlaughter. \nWhilst enjoying the festival\, guests can also browse the independent shops and meet the creative\nmakers who have made Gabriel’s Wharf their home (including Liz and Frances from Potters’ Yard Arts\,\nLisette from Gabu Chocolate\, and a wealth of other artists from Southbank Printmakers and Skylark\nGalleries. \nGabriel’s Wharf Arts Festival is designed to grab attention and bring this often overlooked but beloved\npart of London into the spotlight.
