SUMMARY:Soho Christmas Lights 2021
DESCRIPTION:The Soho Christmas lights have a strong community focussed theme this year – 21 luminescent installations have been designed by children from Soho Parish School under the direction of architect and RIBA Architecture Ambassador Antonio Capelao\, with the support of Hannah Peaty\, art lead at Soho Parish School alongside Joao Rocha of Storm Flowers London. \nLighting up Soho’s streets from 8th November\, the panels have all been designed by a selection of the school’s current pupils under the supervision of architect Capelao and brought to reality by Blachere Illumination UK. The festive designs range from snowmen\, baubles and reindeer to once again bring back the magic of Christmas. The lights are heartwarming installations and represent what it is like to experience Christmas through a child’s eyes.

SUMMARY:Old Time Relijun + Order Of The Toad - Live Concert in London
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents \nOLD TIME RELIJUN\nORDER OF THE TOAD \nOLD TIME RELIJUN are the rarest breed of band. Insatiable\, living raw\, always on the margins and consistent as hell. You know what to expect and yet never have any clue what’s going to come next. Old Time Relijun give sweaty\, compulsively danceable performances that never fail to inflame their audience. Their loose swagger belies years of practice\, meticulous arrangements and gut-level understanding of how music hits you. Old Time Relijun was born on January 1st\, 1995\, in a dark and mouldy basement in Olympia\, Washington. The band stole some popcorn bags\, talked a friend out of his inheritance and self-released “Songbook Vol. I” in 1997. They then began their long association with Calvin Johnson’s K Records. Between 1999 and 2007\, Old Time Relijun toured like monsters\, averaging 150 shows a year in the U.S. and Europe\, releasing ‘Uterus and Fire’\, ‘La Sirena De Pecera’\, ‘Witchcraft Rebellion’\, ‘Lost Light’\, ‘2012’ and ‘Catharsis in Crisis’. The last three albums are known collectively as “The Lost Light Trilogy\,” a conceptual triptych integrating poetry\, painting\, and myth through multiple lyrical and musical threads. The band toured through 2008 and then quietly parted ways.  2021 reunites Old Time Relijun with a newfound level of passionate indignation and a deeper musical vocabulary. The classic lineup featuring bandleader Arrington de Dionyso and Aaron Hartman (upright bass)\, joined by drummer Amanda Spring is primed to return to Europe. Old Time Relijun continue to make music for the revolution from restless energy that has never settled down.\nhttps://oldtimerelijun.bandcamp.com/ \n \nORDER OF THE TOAD is a trio from Glasgow. Melodically\, Order of the Toad has something of a medieval fixation\, filtered through late 60s influences which end up sounding something like Jefferson Airplane – not least in vocalist Gemma “The Wharves” Fleet’s powerful lung-force – mixed with British psyche heat. Think Kaleidoscope or even Syd Barrett drug-damaged whimsy. There’s no other band doing this in the U.K. that we know of\, a musically rich tapestry woven from strands outside current trends. Music is available now on Gringo and Reckless Yes!\nhttps://orderofthetoad.bandcamp.com/ \nThursday\, November 11th\nNew River Studios\, 199 Eade Rd\, Harringay\, London\, N4 1DN\n7.30pm | £8.50 | https://link.dice.fm/GNBlGK80Kgb \n

SUMMARY:We Gather – Craft Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:We Gather – Craft Exhibition featuring five female makers of Black and Asian Heritage\nNew Crafts Council exhibition We Gather features five female makers of Black and Asian heritage whose work shares a commitment to craft and its cultural value\, 17 November 2021 – 5 February 2022 \nWe Gather exhibition opens at the Crafts Council Gallery on 17 November and features five female Black and Asian heritage artists. Whilst their chosen materials and disciplines vary\, their work shares a commitment to craft and its cultural value. The makers are Shaheen Ahmed\, Lorna Hamilton-Brown\, Omeima Mudawi-Rowlings\, Francisca Onumah and Onome Otite. \nThe title We Gather refers to the gathering of ideas\, skills and emotions embedded within these five craft practices and the meeting of perspectives that have been underrepresented in the industry. It is also a symbol of gratitude towards the communities who gathered their courage\, bodies\, and voices to support justice for Black lives\, which instigated deeper conversations between the UK’s Black makers and the Crafts Council. \n“This exhibition has offered us a unique opportunity to curate in honour of women who share similar experiences and frames of reference to our own\, but also within a mainstream cultural organisation that we haven’t traditionally seen ourselves reflected in. We are excited to bring together their collection of works\, which offer audiences fresh visibility to crafts that has emotional depth\, space and social resonance.” Curators of We Gather\, Rosie Ross & Griffi. \nThe We Gather exhibition came out of Craft Expertise\, the AHRC-funded UKRI/RCUK Innovation Fellowship led by Dr Karen Patel of Birmingham City University\, collaborating with Crafts Council. The research aimed to raise awareness of inequalities in the current craft economy in the UK and highlight the various challenges women of colour face in the sector. \nCommissioned by Dr Karen Patel as part of her research\, each artist in the exhibition will present new and existing work. \nBirmingham-based artist Shaheen Ahmed uses maps to reflect narratives of statelessness and disparagement. Her work is layered with a multitude of craft processes and motifs\, including calligraphy and Islamic geometry. She wore a blindfold while making them connect with the emotions and experiences of oppressed societies. \nEast Sussex-based artist Lorna Hamilton-Brown\, known for her provocative textile works that challenge preconceptions of knitting and crochet\, has created a knitted magazine cover – ‘We Mek Magazine’- full of symbolism with a central figure inspired by political activist Angela Davis and with her watch set to 9.25\, the time that George Floyd lost his life to police brutality. \nBritish-Sudanese textile artist Omeima Mudawi-Rowlings will present a new light installation. The work incorporates dyeing\, screen-printing\, and Devoré techniques to explore themes of identity\, communication\, heritage\, and womanhood. The artist is influenced by her Sudanese heritage\, which is reflected in her use of Arabic geometry\, colour\, and form. \nGhanaian-born silversmith Francisca Onumah has created three emotive and figurative vessels in her new work ‘In our sKin’ (2021) that reflect family\, relationships and historical images of Ghanaian people in everyday life. Their abstracted patterns are deconstructed from traditional Ghanaian motifs\, fabrics\, and crafted objects. Instead\, marks and textures are repeatedly hammered into sheet metal to mirror and resemble the patterns found in textiles and fabrics. \nLondon-based artist Onome Otite has created a new textile work inspired by the support network between women\, the group of figures in her piece are based on close friends of hers that have inspired her. She has also intentionally chosen five figures to mirror the relevance of the five women taking part in the We Gather exhibition. She has hand-stitched loose-folded fabrics across her hand-drawn statistics\, which each of her subjects has donated. \nAt the centre of the exhibition is a gathering space. Material from the commissioning artists will be displayed alongside other pioneering female makers whose work celebrates craft within everyday contexts. Among these will be works by artists Jasleen Kaur and Magdalene Odundo DBE from the Crafts Council Collection. We Gather is a site for learning and reflection\, with books\, reports and images encouraging visitors to discuss visibility\, cultural traditions\, and the value of women’s contribution to craft within everyday contexts. \nThe exhibition also features a selection of objects and portraits of female artisans from The Black Artisans\, a photographic project by Jo Sealy that celebrates Black artisans in traditional sectors of UK heritage crafts and gives visibility to doing practices derived from African and Caribbean cultural heritage\, including steel pan making and calabash art. \nThe exhibition graphic design is by Rose Nordin\, co-founder of OOMK (One of My Kind).

SUMMARY:Kūnlún\, Michael & Chiyan Ho - Unique Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Chinese Art Exhibition in London\nThe mountains of Kūnlún\, in ancient Chinese mythology\, are the dwelling place of gods and fantastic beasts. They are also\, of course\, an actually existing mountain range. This mystical locale\, situated somewhere between reality and myth\, provides a particularly apt window into the practice of Michael and Chiyan Ho. The duo studied architecture at the Architectural Association in London before developing an idiosyncratic painting practice that involves pushing specks of acrylic paint from the back of the canvas to the front to form the backdrop\, then switching to oil to paint the figures on top. In this laborious process\, marked by both formal ingenuity and symbolic fecundity\, an enigmatic space—one in which ambiguous protagonists lie afloat in nocturnal fields of lush foliage—is called into existence. \nV.O Curations is pleased to announce Kūnlún\, the first solo exhibition by artist duo\, Michael and Chiyan Ho. Comprising seven new oil and acrylic paintings\, this new body of work developed during their residency\, employs myth\, metaphor and magical realist narratives as a form of worlding and to explore Chinese diasporic identity.\nA newly commissioned text by writer and curator\, Alvin Li\, will accompany the exhibition.

SUMMARY:Studio Paradiso: Studio 54 Inspired Pop Up - Party in London
DESCRIPTION:Studio Paradiso invites you to forget the outside world for one night\, where nobody cares who you are as long as you are fabulous. In our secret Manhattan loft\, you’re invited to let love life as a pianist in black tie plays in the background while you drink cocktails with your new best friend. An otherworldly singer serenades you as you dine on fine foods\, and you find yourself sharing a bottle of Champagne with the hottest circus act in town. \nFollowing the massive success of their 5-star cocktail bar in a pie and mash shop on Walthamstow market\, ‘one of London’s cult drinking experiences’ (Time Out)\, The Jellied Eel presents a new immersive winter pop up that will harness the spirit of Studio 54 and 1970s Manhattan. \nA massive retro camper van provides the backdrop to a cosy winter space filled with 70s furniture\, fur rugs\, a vintage word burner\, disco ball\, and superb period warehouse features. Performers include Silvia Pavone\, who\, after running away to the circus as a teenager\, has become a world-class hula hoop star\, using cutting edge LED technology to create an unforgettable\, multi-dimensional visual experience. Her television appearances have included the John Bishop show. The house pianist\, Adam Sopp\, is an actor and musician who has appeared in BAFTA and Olivier Award-winning productions\, including Sunny Afternoon and Last Night in Soho. \nIt wouldn’t be the 70s or winter without fondue. And at Studio Paradiso\, the fondue is made with an exceptional ingredient: Champagne! Layered into the Comté\, Gruyère and Emmental\, the Heidsieck Monopole Brut Grand Cuvée takes the fondue to new heights. All served with classic accoutrements and optional charcuterie boards; the fondue is presented in vintage fondue sets. \nAs well as Champagne from drinks partner Heidsieck Monopole\, the cocktail menu will include a Winter Negroni using Aquavit and Pedro Ximenez sherry\, a Walnut Old Fashioned\, and Hot Buttered Rum. Heidsieck is a Grand Marque Champagne\, with its heritage going back to 1785. Internationally recognised the world over\, Heidsieck is proud to be poured this winter in association with The Jellied Eel.

SUMMARY:HEN OGLEDD - Concert
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents \nHEN OGLEDD\nTuesday 7 December\nCorsica Studios\, 4 & 5 Elephant Rd\, London\, SE17 1LB\n7.30pm | £14 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/ubtrl5YlLjb \nA band project comprising Richard Dawson\, Rhodri Davies\, Dawn Bothwell and Sally Pilkington\, Hen Ogledd’s meaning comes from the Welsh name for The Old North. Following on from the quartet’s previous album Mogic\, with its digital overtones and themes of artificial intelligence\, Hen Ogledd’s second album Free Humans takes a deliberately organic and natural approach. Inspired by ABBA as the work of 12th century mystic-composer-naturalist-visionary Hildegard von Bingen\, touched equally by the spirits of radical philosophical plumber Mary Midgley and PC Music star Hannah Diamond\, as quiet as the paintings of Agnes Martin yet bombastic like a Werner Herzog documentary… it’s an album of seamless\, glorious contradictions. \n \n  \nTackling themes of love\, friendship\, Gaia theory\, sewers\, the nature of time\, human stench\, and the thrills of wild swimming\, it’s remarkable that\, given the intense collision of influences and wide-ranging ideas at play\, Free Humans somehow coheres into a marvellous whole. Hen Ogledd manages to hold both the tragedy of the wrongs happening in the world and also a sense of hope and liberation in their hands at the same time. \nHOME

SUMMARY:Mark Thomas: An Extra Plate - Christmas Comedy Shows in London
DESCRIPTION:Mark Thomas is just about the last person you’d associate with “ho ho ho\, let’s throw a log on the fire and gather around for Christmas.”\nBut. MARK LOVES CHRISTMAS! Christmas singles\, films\, carols\, decorations\, presents\, food and\, most of all\, Christmas stories! \nFrom this most unChristmassy storyteller comes Christmas tales from his life\, time and family. The one where his dad was Father Christmas for the school fete\, the Christmas spent alone\, the dead neighbours\, the broken hearts and the unexpected guests. Mark loves it all\, but most of all\, he loves the stories of giving and sharing\, celebrating and finding hope in the darkest time of year. \nIt’s time to tell of the ghost of radical Christmas past and present. It’s part comedy\, part pathos and an all-out party with more cheer than a Laplander’s eggnog hot tub!
