SUMMARY:Digital Practices - Masterclass with climate change expert Angela YT Chan
DESCRIPTION:Develop a socially and environmentally responsible digital practice in this Masterclass with climate change specialist\, researcher\, curator and artist Angela YT Chan. Learn about the historical roots of the climate crisis\, gain tools for applying climate literacy in your digital projects\, and develop frameworks for building a sustainable future in the digital sector. \n\n\n\nPurchase tickets here! \n\n\n\n11:30-13:30\, 20 May – Session 1 \n\n\n\nSituating Digital Practices in Climate Change History and Toward Climate Justice \n\n\n\nThis session aims to provide an overview of the history of climate change to support the fundamental goals of intersectional climate justice. The focus will be on how the exploitative colonial histories of people and the planet have contributed to the climate crisis and how uneven global developments have perpetuated it. By grasping these concepts\, we can establish a foundation for exploring the significant role that evolving digital practices play in promoting positive change. \n\n\n\n14:00 – 16:00\, 20 May – Session 2 \n\n\n\nTools for Climate Literacy in Digital Practices \n\n\n\nIn this session\, you will be introduced to some of the tools available to digital practitioners to develop climate literacy while working on their projects. The different terms that will be covered include carbon footprint\, carbon offsetting\, sustainability\, sustainable development\, and others. Throughout the session\, we will prioritise a climate justice approach that places people at the centre of the climate struggle. Additionally\, we will examine the environmental impacts of software and hardware used in the creative process. \n\n\n\n16:30 – 18:30\, 20 May – Session 3 \n\n\n\nFrameworks for Environmentally and Socially Responsible Digital Practices \n\n\n\nIn this session\, the focus will remain on the climate justice approach to digital practices. The aim is to discuss the long-term infrastructures and resources digital practitioners would like to see in their sector. The session will explore the type of commissioning\, material\, and financial support required by digital practitioners to build a sustainable future. This includes support from funders and institutional hosts. Additionally\, the session will examine the grassroots and other digital practitioners’ existing resources. The objective is to cultivate sustainable digital practices that go beyond climate literacy and include a compassionate understanding of the cultural\, social\, and political dynamics associated with the climate crisis. \n\n\n\n——————————————————————————- \n\n\n\nTo participate in Session 1\, you should bring a laptop or tablet and a phone with a camera. You will also need to log into your Google account to access Creation tools in the Google Earth browser\, so please make sure you have the necessary devices and an internet connection. If you don’t have access to a Google account\, you can work in a small group with someone who does. Additionally\, you will need to use your phone camera to take pictures of collages and upload them to Google Earth. \n\n\n\nFor all workshops\, it is recommended that participants come prepared to reflect on their own practice. This includes considering material factors such as hardware\, software\, and other materials\, as well as immaterial factors such as your concepts and relationships\, especially in relation to the environment\, people\, and places. \n\n\n\n——————————————————————————- \n\n\n\n£20 per session \n\n\n\n£45 for the entire day (3 sessions) \n\n\n\n——————————————————————————- \n\n\n\nThrough workshops led by artists\, arebyte’s digital training sessions provide practical techniques for digital making. \n\n\n\nFrom introductory to more advanced sessions on coding\, 3D designing\, sound editing\, cross-platform game engines\, and virtual world-making\, the creative courses provide hands-on tools that participants can apply in their creative development for all educational levels. \n\n\n\nFor questions or enquiries\, please email arebyte Gallery at hello@arebyte.com. SUMMARY:Theatrical Ceramics & Sculptural String
DESCRIPTION:In an unlikely collaboration\, Essex-born award winning ceramicist David Millidge and Brighton’s own alternative goth sculptor Sam Jacobs\, unite their contrasting art forms to create a cohesive experience that is both theatrical and tactile. \nMillidge\, known for his distinctive figurative ceramic sculptures\, offers his new works ‘The Precious Orbs Collection’ a glimpse into a world where each unique\, handmade ceramic sculpture boasts intricate patterns and forms\, inviting viewers to ponder the delicate balance between beauty and functionality. \nSam challenges perceptions with her self-supporting sculptures crafted from string and rope through macramé and fisherman’s knotting techniques. Her works are a testament to the strength found in vulnerability\, reflecting her personal journey and the environment that shapes her.

SUMMARY:Brothers + Q&A with Mark Cornwall - Film & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:In this gripping true-life Cold War drama\, brothers Josef and Ctirad\, sons of legendary anti-Nazi resistance fighter Josef Mašín\, take up arms against the oppressive communist state. Spurred by their mother‘s defiance and its consequences\, the brothers embark on a violent resistance campaign. As their actions escalate\, a relentless policeman is hot on their trail\, forcing them into a harrowing escape. Tomáš Mašín\, a distant relative\, masterfully reconstructs their death-defying journey to West Berlin. Crossing Czechoslovakia and East Germany\, pursued by Red Army soldiers and 20\,000 East German police in the most extensive manhunt in Cold War history\, their story unfolds as a fast-paced epic thriller. With a strong emotional impact and a focus on family bonds\, this film leaves audiences on the edge of their seats\, inviting them to reflect on a poignant story that still divides Czech society today. \nDior. SUMMARY:Active Involvement in Research (AIRD) 2024: in person event
DESCRIPTION:The annual Active Involvement in Research event brings together patients\, service users\, carers and local people\, researchers\, health and care professionals and organisations\, in south London and beyond. \nThe theme this year is: ‘Improving health and care in south London\, shaping future research.’ \nFor several years\, Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) South London has carried out research on how various types of health and social care might be improved and inequalities tackled. \nStaff\, public contributors\, community and other partners have worked hard to successfully understand and achieve change for local people who experience a range of issues. This includes those with multiple conditions and those facing disadvantage and discrimination which affects their wellbeing. But many south Londoners are still at risk and face barriers to getting the treatment and support they need. \nThis year\, Active Involvement in Research will look at: \n\nWhat the focus of future work should be from April 2026 to March 2031\, if funding is available\nHow can we\, our community and other partners build on local strengths and direct limited resources to address current challenges in useful ways? This includes not duplicating what other research teams and organisations are doing or have done\nHow can we further develop active involvement\, and recognise the value of lived experience\, in future research?\n\nThis is the first of two events. It will be held in person on 13 November 2024. The Active Involvement in Research: online event will follow on 18 November 2024. \nYou are welcome to join us at either or both events to hear about thinking to date and share your own views\, which will help to shape future research. Further information will follow\, but places are limited so it is advisable to book early. \nAttendance is free and all are welcome. \nFind out more \n\nTo find out more about the event\, please email involvement coordinator savitri.hensman@kcl.ac.uk. You can also visit www.arc-sl.nihr.ac.uk\nPlease note: payments will be made to public members who have an agreed role.
