SUMMARY:JITR Jan: Empirical\, Pedro Velasco + Emily Tran
DESCRIPTION:EMPIRICAL @empiricalmusic \n\nFeaturing Nathaniel Facey (alto sax)\, Tom Farmer (double bass)\, Lewis Wright (vibraphone) and Shaney Forbes (drums)\, the quartet bonded through a sense of common purpose: “I’d never met guys who took it so seriously. The process of studying together is really what brought us together\, and we just carried on doing it” recalls Tom Farmer. Collective study and exploration have remained the bedrock of Empirical’s creative process and have seen the band assimilate influences from right across the rich history of jazz. While oblique harmonies\, translucent textures and jagged\, quick-shifting rhythms are the signposts of Empirical’s musical territory\, the band has not been afraid to explore other musical realms. Alongside their ceaselessly fearless creative fervour\, Empirical has established an instantly recognisable group sound rife with raw energy and roiling emotion. Despite the intellectualism often ascribed to jazz\, for Empirical\, it’s ultimately all about moving\, rather than impressing\, their audience. \n\nPEDRO VELASCO @pedrovelascomusic \n\nPedro Velasco is a London-based guitarist who specialises in improvised music. Born in Lisbon\, Portugal\, he began playing piano at age nine. Inspired by the Brazilian music he was surrounded by at home\, he picked up a guitar at age 12. Under the tutelage of renowned Portuguese guitarist Mario Delgado\, he began turning to the sounds of jazz and improvised music. He moved to London in 2003 to study at Middlesex University with Nikki Iles\, Chris Batchelor and Stuart Hall and in 2007\, he graduated with a first-class honours degree in Music (Jazz Performance). He performs prolifically across the UK and Europe with several projects\, including Harry Christelis and Pedro Velasco duo\, who recently released their debut album Scribbling to critical acclaim. He composes original material for his ensembles\, Pedro Velasco Trio\, Akimbo and Machimbombo and continues to explore other styles of music that champion interaction and personal expression.\n\n\nEMILY TRAN @emireallyhere \nEmily Tran is a pianist from South-East London who was inspired by the likes of Bud Powell\, Oscar Peterson\, Monk\, and Herbie Hancock. Developing her playing with Tomorrow’s Warriors\, she has played at many venues in London\, such as The Queen Elizabeth Hall\, Ronnie Scott’s and Brick Lane Jazz Festival. Influenced by many different genres of music\, she is currently at the Royal Academy of Music studying composition and will be debuting some new compositions for this performance. \nJazz Bands London

SUMMARY:Holocaust Memorial Day: The Hungarian Dressmaker
DESCRIPTION:Marika\, a Hungarian widow dressmaker\, shelters a little Czech Jewish boy in her home on the Slovak-Hungarian border during the turbulent years of WW2 and the Wartime Slovak State. Based on Peter Krištúfek’s novel Emma and the Death’s Head and inspired by true events\, the screening marks the Holocaust Memorial Day. \n\nIt’s the 1940s. The Slovak state witnessed the rise of nationalism\, and it’s not an auspicious time for minorities. The turbulent social mood also impacts the widow Marika\, who loses her job in an Aryanised dressmaker’s shop. Given the increasing anti-Hungarian sentiment\, she shuts herself away\, particularly since she is also harbouring a little Jewish boy. Despite this\, she still finds herself singled out by two men: a German Nazi officer and a captain of Slovakia’s Hlinka Guard. This drama by Slovak director Iveta Grófová is an adaptation of the novella by Peter Krištúfek\, which conjures up the dramatic atmosphere of wartime Slovakia. The story of a fragmented era\, which forces the protagonists to confront complex dilemmas\, is told through words and powerful visual language. \nIveta Grófová\, Czech Republic/Slovakia\, 2024\, 129‘\nCast Alexandra Borbély\, Nico Klimek\, Milan Ondrík\, Alexander E. SUMMARY:Anna Hulačová at Each Place Its Own Mind - Free Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Edel Assanti presents Each Place Its Own Mind (17 January – 15 March 2025)\, featuring Czech artist Anna Hulačová among eight international artists. Hulačová’s innovative work bridges ecological themes with artistic experimentation\, offering a profound meditation on humanity’s bond with nature. \n\nHulačová contributes a series of striking concrete busts with honeycomb interiors\, created in collaboration with bees during their swarming season. These sculptures symbolize the ancient interconnection between humans and bees\, evoking a hybrid organism that reflects the porous relationship between body and consciousness. The pieces embody the exhibition’s theme of interwoven experiences across species\, exploring the shared psyche of all beings inhabiting a place. \nEach Place Its Own Mind engages with ideas from David Abram’s The Spell of the Sensuous (1996)\, reimagining humanity’s relationship with the natural world. It showcases an interdisciplinary mix of drawing\, sculpture\, film\, and installation\, addressing ecological\, cultural\, and ancestral narratives. Alongside Hulačová’s work\, the exhibition includes pieces by Mirtha Dermisache\, Noémie Goudal\, Sky Hopinka\, and others\, fostering a dialogue about the enchantment of the world and the interconnected web of existence. \nThe exhibition opens with a private view on 16 January 2025\, from 6-8 pm. \nAnna Hulačová (b. 1984\, Sušice\, Czech Republic) graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts\, Prague (2012). She lives and works in Prague. Her work has been shown internationally\, including at the National Gallery\, Prague\, Czech Republic; Centre Pompidou\, Paris\, France; Baltic Triennial\, Vilnius\, Lithuania; Meyer Riegger\, Berlin\, Germany; and the Louis Vuitton Foundation\, Paris\, France. \n\nOpening hours: Tuesday to Saturday 11am – 6pm

SUMMARY:Lets Talk! Being a Man in London
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Let’s Talk: Men’s Wellbeing! \nDate: December 5th \nTime: 12 pm – 2 pm. \nLocation: Longfield Hall \nJoin us for an open discussion on all things related to men’s health and wellness. This event is a safe space for men to share their experiences\, ask questions\, and learn from one another. There will be free food and drink and an opportunity to network and make new peers in a safe space for men to speak freely. \nIt Starts with Men is part of the 16 Days of Activism campaign to end violence against women and girls. We believe ensuring that male voices are heard in this campaign is more important than ever. In this space\, we want to explore what it means to be a man. How do we think society views men? Are we hopeful for the future generation? Are we worried? What are the challenges\, limitations and concerns about being a man today? Are we comfortable calling each other out for negative behaviour\, choices\, and words? \nWhether you’re looking for advice or support or just want to connect with like-minded individuals\, this event is for you. Let’s break the stigma and start talking about men’s well-being together. See you there!

SUMMARY:Active Involvement in Research (AIRD) 2024: in person and online health conference
DESCRIPTION:Our annual Active Involvement in Research events bring together patients\, service users\, carers\, local people\, researchers\, health and care professionals\, and organisations in south London and beyond. \nThis year’s theme is ‘Improving health and care in south London\, shaping future research.’ \nFor several years\, Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) South London has researched how various types of health and social care might be improved and inequalities tackled. \nStaff\, public contributors\, the community\, and other partners have worked hard to successfully understand and achieve change for local people who experience a range of issues. This includes those with multiple conditions and those facing disadvantage and discrimination that affects their well-being. But many south Londoners are still at risk and face barriers to getting the treatment and support they need. \nThis year\, Active Involvement in Research will look at: \n\nWhat the focus of future work should be from April 2026 to March 2031\, if funding is available\nHow can we\, our community and other partners build on local strengths and direct limited resources to address current challenges in useful ways? This includes not duplicating what other research teams and organisations have done.\nHow can we further develop active involvement and recognise the value of lived experience in future research?\n\nThis is the second of two events. It will be held online on 18 November 2024\, following the in-person event on 13 November. \nYou are welcome to join us at either or both events to hear about thinking to date and share your views\, which will help to shape future research. Further information will follow\, but places are limited\, so booking early is advisable. \nAttendance is free\, and all are welcome. \nFind out more \n\nTo find out more about the event\, please email involvement coordinator savitri.hensman@kcl.ac.uk. SUMMARY:Online: Bruno Groening - His words banish illness.
DESCRIPTION:The film\, “The Phenomenon Bruno Groening – In the footsteps of the miracle healer”\, shows the events surrounding Bruno Groening. In autumn of 1949\, close to 30\,000 people were drawn to the Traberhof in Rosenheim daily. Newspapers\, radio and television reported: “It is beyond reason. SUMMARY:MoH Deep Dive: Social Responses to Stigma
DESCRIPTION:Deep Dive is a current affairs programme hosted by Museum of Homelessness directors Matt and Jess. This monthly show will feature commentators\, intelligent analysis\, and some honest talk and will unpack what’s going on beyond tabloid sensationalism and stereotyping. \nAbout the next episode – Social Responses to Stigma: Book Tickets Here \nFive years ago\, a Danish artist called Christian Hornsleth fitted tracker apps to people sleeping rough and launched a city-wide art project that tracked their movements. Was it a prank? A pointed commentary on our morals and ethics? Or was it simply insensitive? It was difficult to tell in a swirl of social media outrage that followed. \nWhether it’s art projects or survivalists like Ed Stafford trying his hand at a bit of rough sleeping\, the idea of translating the experiences of homelessness is challenging because of the judgements that society brings to those who are most marginalised. \nThis episode will reflect on how social biases and stigma shape understanding of homelessness. This will include a deep dive into the social neuroscience of how dehumanisation\, the historical tradition of social poverty safari and up-to-date projects attempting to unpack stigma today. The episode will include special guests from both a lived experience and an academic perspective. \nGuests for this month \nAndy Guise: Andy will appear on the show and be the director of the Social Responses to Stigma study at Kings College London. MoH is part of the project which seeks to explore experiences of stigma and discrimination amongst people who are homeless in south London and then seeks to understand how this stigma is created or overcome within particular care and support systems. The project will then imagine new responses to stigma that take action at the level of society. \nDr Lasana Harris: Lasana is a Professor of Social Neuroscience in the Experimental Psychology Division of Psychology & Language  Sciences at UCL. Lasana has undertaken extensive research into dehumanised perception\, including work in homelessness settings. Lasana collaborated with MoH on its 2018 exhibition project\, ‘Objectified’\, exploring whether our object stories can change perceptions of homelessness. Lasana will do a pre-recorded interview\, which will be screened at the event. \nCheck out our Deep Dive page to listen to previous episodes. \nFurther Info \n11 am – 12 noon\, doors open at 10.30 am and snacks afterwards. \nThe programme will be published as a podcast after the studio recording \nTickets Available Here
