DESCRIPTION:Join us at our brand-new masterclasses and learn what science has to say about health and well-being. Our team of experts will help you cut through the myths and sensational headlines with up-to-date research and real-world advice around personalised nutrition\, exercise\, new obesity drugs\, sleep\, your immune system and how to be happier. \n\n\n\nThe morning session will focus on diet and exercise\, and the afternoon session will focus on how to live better and improve your well-being. Join us for one session or the whole day and start your journey towards a healthier you. \n\n\n\nTopics covered will include: \n\n\n\nMorning session: diet and exercise \n\n\n\n\nPersonalised nutrition\n\n\n\nExercise and diet\n\n\n\nWeight loss medicine\n\n\n\n\nAfternoon session: wellbeing \n\n\n\n\nOptimising sleep\n\n\n\nYour immune system\n\n\n\nHow to be happy\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nMorning session: Diet and exercise\, talks and speakers: \n\n\n\nPersonalised nutrition\n\n\n\nKate Bermingham\, Research Associate\, King’s College London \n\n\n\nWhat role does our individual microbiome play in shaping our unique responses to food relative to ‘what’ we eat\, ‘who’ we are and ‘how’ we eat? \n\n\n\nCan you outrun a bad diet?\n\n\n\nDylan Thompson\, Professor of Human Physiology\, University of Bath \n\n\n\nWhat is the role of exercise in keeping us healthy? Is it possible to eat a ‘poor’ diet\, with excess calories but offset it by increasing your physical exercise? \n\n\n\nNew obesity drugs- what’s the evidence?\n\n\n\nSimon Cork\, Senior Lecturer in Physiology\, Anglia Ruskin University \n\n\n\nSemaglutide (also known by brand names such as Wegovy and Ozempic) is a medication for type 2 diabetes that has recently been approved to treat obesity. Results have been dramatic\, showing a 15 per cent reduction in body weight over a year when combined with exercise and eating healthily. In this talk\, we’ll explore how this medication works\, what side effects it has and if it is really the solution to the obesity epidemic. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nAfternoon session: Wellbeing\, talks and speakers: \n\n\n\nOptimising Sleep: Unravelling the Neuroscience and enhancing sleep habits\n\n\n\nNicola Barclay\, Lecturer in Sleep Medicine\, the Sleep and Circadian Neuroscience Institute\, University of Oxford \n\n\n\nNicola Barclay will delve into the fascinating world of sleep\, exploring its intricate neuroscience\, the importance of sufficient sleep\, common sleep problems\, and evidence-based strategies to improve sleep quality. By combining research-based findings with therapeutic techniques\, she will provide practical insights for optimising sleep and its impact on overall well-being. \n\n\n\nYour immune system – Can it be “boosted”? If not\, why not?\n\n\n\nAl Edwards\, Associate Professor in Biomedical Technology\, University of Reading / Southampton \n\n\n\nAdvertisements are full of claims for ‘Immune Boosting’ products\, but is there any evidence that we can strengthen our body’s most fascinating system? We do know that vaccines work very well\, but at the same time find it very hard to measure the general status of our immune system; this makes it surprisingly difficult to know how to strengthen immunity through behaviour or nutrition. \n\n\n\nHow to be happy: all you need is stoicism?\n\n\n\nTim Lebon\, Accredited psychotherapist and author \n\n\n\nDid the Stoics in ancient Greece discover the psychology of a happy life over 2\,000 years ago\, and how are their teachings similar to modern approaches like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy? \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nWho should attend? \n\n\n\nAnyone interested in health and well-being\, whatever your age or background. Whether you’re a scientist\, a student or simply a fascinated human being\, The Science of Health and Wellbeing offers the chance to learn directly from the experts. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nBenefits of attending: \n\n\n\n\nLearn from scientists working at the forefront of their field.\n\n\n\nInformal set-up\, meet like-minded people.\n\n\n\nOpen your mind\, and be inspired.\n\n\n\nA unique chance to ask your burning questions to our experts.\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nWhat’s included in your ticket: \n\n\n\n\nIn-depth and engaging talks from six leading scientists.\n\n\n\nHosted Q+As with the speakers at the end of each session.\n\n\n\nYour chance to meet our speakers and New Scientist host.\n\n\n\nExclusive on-the-day New Scientist subscription deal\, book and merchandise offers.

SUMMARY:MoH Deep Dive: Social Responses to Stigma
DESCRIPTION:Deep Dive is a current affairs programme hosted by Museum of Homelessness directors Matt and Jess. This monthly show will feature commentators\, intelligent analysis\, and some honest talk and will unpack what’s going on beyond tabloid sensationalism and stereotyping. \nAbout the next episode – Social Responses to Stigma: Book Tickets Here \nFive years ago\, a Danish artist called Christian Hornsleth fitted tracker apps to people sleeping rough and launched a city-wide art project that tracked their movements. Was it a prank? A pointed commentary on our morals and ethics? Or was it simply insensitive? It was difficult to tell in a swirl of social media outrage that followed. \nWhether it’s art projects or survivalists like Ed Stafford trying his hand at a bit of rough sleeping\, the idea of translating the experiences of homelessness is challenging because of the judgements that society brings to those who are most marginalised. \nThis episode will reflect on how social biases and stigma shape understanding of homelessness. This will include a deep dive into the social neuroscience of how dehumanisation\, the historical tradition of social poverty safari and up-to-date projects attempting to unpack stigma today. The episode will include special guests from both a lived experience and an academic perspective. \nGuests for this month \nAndy Guise: Andy will appear on the show and be the director of the Social Responses to Stigma study at Kings College London. MoH is part of the project which seeks to explore experiences of stigma and discrimination amongst people who are homeless in south London and then seeks to understand how this stigma is created or overcome within particular care and support systems. The project will then imagine new responses to stigma that take action at the level of society. \nDr Lasana Harris: Lasana is a Professor of Social Neuroscience in the Experimental Psychology Division of Psychology & Language  Sciences at UCL. Lasana has undertaken extensive research into dehumanised perception\, including work in homelessness settings. Lasana collaborated with MoH on its 2018 exhibition project\, ‘Objectified’\, exploring whether our object stories can change perceptions of homelessness. Lasana will do a pre-recorded interview\, which will be screened at the event. \nCheck out our Deep Dive page to listen to previous episodes. \nFurther Info \n11 am – 12 noon\, doors open at 10.30 am and snacks afterwards. \nThe programme will be published as a podcast after the studio recording \nTickets Available Here

SUMMARY:Active Involvement in Research (AIRD) 2024: in person event
DESCRIPTION:The annual Active Involvement in Research event brings together patients\, service users\, carers and local people\, researchers\, health and care professionals and organisations\, in south London and beyond. \nThe theme this year is: ‘Improving health and care in south London\, shaping future research.’ \nFor several years\, Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) South London has carried out research on how various types of health and social care might be improved and inequalities tackled. \nStaff\, public contributors\, community and other partners have worked hard to successfully understand and achieve change for local people who experience a range of issues. This includes those with multiple conditions and those facing disadvantage and discrimination which affects their wellbeing. But many south Londoners are still at risk and face barriers to getting the treatment and support they need. \nThis year\, Active Involvement in Research will look at: \n\nWhat the focus of future work should be from April 2026 to March 2031\, if funding is available\nHow can we\, our community and other partners build on local strengths and direct limited resources to address current challenges in useful ways? This includes not duplicating what other research teams and organisations are doing or have done\nHow can we further develop active involvement\, and recognise the value of lived experience\, in future research?\n\nThis is the first of two events. It will be held in person on 13 November 2024. The Active Involvement in Research: online event will follow on 18 November 2024. \nYou are welcome to join us at either or both events to hear about thinking to date and share your own views\, which will help to shape future research. Further information will follow\, but places are limited so it is advisable to book early. \nAttendance is free and all are welcome. \nFind out more \n\nTo find out more about the event\, please email involvement coordinator savitri.hensman@kcl.ac.uk. SUMMARY:University of West London Diabetes Forum Conference 2024
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the University of West London for a day of insightful discussions\, workshops\, and networking opportunities. \nDespite the massive advancement in the care of people with diabetes\, there is evidence to suggest inequalities in the level of care provision. In the last decade\, experts in diabetes care from various nations have identified the importance of equitable diabetes care encompassing high-risk communities and disadvantaged populations. Access to quality care is a basic right for everyone worldwide. Therefore\, the conference’s central theme is “Equality\, diversity\, and inclusion in diabetes care”. Among the topics to be covered are promoting care in marginalised people\, addressing health inequalities and supporting people with learning disabilities and diabetes\, managing diabetes in pregnant women and children\, equality\, diversity\, and inclusion in diabetes care\, and dietary and lifestyle habits among ethnic minorities with type 2 diabetes in London\, pharmacological management of diabetes\, and practical experience and tips in managing diabetes. \nOur lineup of speakers includes experts in the field of diabetes research and treatment\, ready to share their knowledge and latest findings with you. Whether you’re a healthcare professional\, researcher\, student\, or simply interested in learning more about diabetes\, this conference is the place to be. Don’t miss out on this chance to expand your understanding of diabetes and connect with like-minded individuals. See you there!

SUMMARY:Journey to Nutopia: Mutate & Survive 2025 - Talks
DESCRIPTION:Journey to Nutopia: Mutate & Survive 2025 \nBack after a two-year hiatus\, join us for an evening of talks and conversation about democratising democracy\, the latest on integrating psychedelic experiences\, tales from the counterculture\, and the magic of chocolate… \n  \nPSYCHEDELIC INTEGRATION//_PANEL:\nMICHELLE BAKER JONES/\nANYA OLEKSIUK\nGREG DONALDSON> \nJAMIE_KELSEY<ACTIVIST/_ONE_WORLD OR NONE_ \nANITA BRULEE – CHOCOLATE LOVE MEDICINE// \nRICHARD NORRIS – READS FROM STRANGE THINGS ARE HAPPENING_ \nHosted by Michelle Olley \n*** \nA lot has happened since Richard Norris and Michelle Olley launched Journey to Nutopia in 2018. Our founding motto – ‘refuting the inevitability of global dystopia’ isn’t getting any easier\, but that’s all the more reason to look for the places in our doom-flooded news environment where The Work is happening – so we’re going back to basics. \nThe first Journey to Nutopia was a three-day programme of talks\, spoken word and acid house as part of Birmingham’s Lunar Festival in 2018. Authors\, activists\, artists\, academics\, psychedelic researchers\, poets and DJs came together to boost ‘positive future narratives that refute the inevitability of a global dystopia’. It was pure joy. \nWe are delighted to kick off our 2025 calendar with the return of some of our original guests from that line-up. Two of our speakers were Dr Ros Watts and Michelle Baker Jones – who\, as part of a series of trials with Prof. David Nutt\, were investigating the value of integrating psilocybin into mental health treatments. Psychological therapist Michelle joins us again to delve deeper into where that research has brought us in 2025 as part of a panel that includes PsyAware co-founder Anya Oleksiuk and psychotherapist and Psychedelic CPD Events founder Greg Donaldson. \nJamie Kelsey is always where it’s at. Longtime civil rights and climate activist and founding Nutopian\, Jamie will be talking about his latest initiative\, One World or None\, which combines his work as one of the people behind the scenes in XR/Just Stop Oil/A22 with being the co-founder of the world’s only Global Citizens’ Assembly. Richard Norris will read a passage from his beats-infused memoir Strange Things Are Happening (White Rabbit) to honour our acid house beginnings. Plus\, Chocolate Love Medicine’s Anita Brulee shares her wisdom on the healing properties of Mama Cacao.

SUMMARY:Jeremy Jeffs – Lives We Cannot Live
DESCRIPTION:Documentary film maker and photographer Jeremy Jeffs spent three years photographing and interviewing people with ME in their homes. Lives We Cannot Live reveals the hidden reality of living with the condition. \nCurated by Sebah Chaudhry and supported by the ME Association\, the exhibition sets out to bring visibility to a hidden and neglected community and encompasses environmental portraits\, collaged with diary notes and personal memories of before being ill\, selected from more than 50 cases. \nDiagnosed with ME as a teenager\, Jeffs shares the lived experiences of his sitters and captures an intimate side of life rarely witnessed even by close friends. Hidden symptoms mixed with a general lack of awareness make this a doubly invisible and isolating disease. \n“I started this project out of frustration and anger because in the almost four decades since my diagnosis nothing has really changed. We still don’t know much about ME\, there’s still a lack of proper funding for research\, no clear treatment\, and worse\, there’s still widespread misunderstanding about the illness\, even among some healthcare professionals.” \nAround 400\,000 people in the UK have this debilitating and as yet incurable illness. Symptoms include profound fatigue\, sleep disturbance\, post-exertional malaise\, cognitive difficulties and a range of other symptoms like pain\, headaches\, nausea and intolerance to lights and noise. \nLives We Cannot Live is the first large scale project to focus on ME and precedes the publication of a photo book with Fistful of Books later this year.
