SUMMARY:100 Days to Peace
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of music and reflection to mark the centenary of the last 100 days of hostilities during the First World War. \nThe highlight of the evening’s programme will be Sir Karl Jenkins conducting his internationally acclaimed work The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace\, performed by the Royal Choral Society and the Philharmonia Orchestra. This will be the only performance of ‘The Armed Man’ in England in 2018 to be conducted by Sir Karl himself. \nThe evening will be presented by Lesley Garrett CBE who will also be performing\, alongside British mezzo-soprano Kathryn Rudge. \nAll proceeds from this event will go to three charities working to support military veterans facing mental health challenges: Help for Heroes\, Combat Stress and Heads Together – The Royal Foundation’s campaign and mental health initiative. \nAt the end of the First World War many thousands of men returned home suffering from shell-shock. With minimal understanding of the condition\, many did not benefit from the type of support which is increasingly available today. Although circumstances have changed significantly over the last 100 years\, we are ever more aware of the number of veterans who continue to need support because they suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder\, anxiety or depression. \nAs the national museum of arms and armour\, the Royal Armouries tells the stories of the men and women who have been involved in and affected by combat throughout history. As music will be at the heart of this classical evening it is fitting that Sir Karl Jenkin’s will conduct his internationally acclaimed ‘The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace’ – originally commissioned by the Royal Armouries to mark the turn of the millennium to create a legacy of peace and hope for the future. \nA better future\nChairman of the Royal Armouries\, General the Lord Dannatt GBC CBE MC DL\, comments: ‘Tragically\, the First World War did not turn out to be ‘the war to end war’ but then\, as now\, by marking the centenary of the end of the last 100 days of hostilities with this commemorative concert\, we can hope and pray for a better future. Part of that better future is helping those who have been affected by war and conflict.’

SUMMARY:DAM - Live in London
DESCRIPTION:Heralded as “the spokesman of a new generation”\, DAM began working together in the late 1990s as the first Palestinian hip-hop crew and among the first to rap in Arabic. Struck by the uncanny resemblance of the reality of the streets in a Tupac video to the streets in their own neighborhood of Lyd\, they were inspired to tell their stories through this new medium. \nBringing together a unique combination of Arabic percussion rhythms\, Middle Eastern melodies and hip hop\, DAM Palestine has grown to become one of the most influential acts of the Middle East’s urban music scene. \nIn 2016 Maisa Daw officially joined the group with the release of their first single ‘#Who_You_R’ an incendiary critique of gender roles and social hypocrisy. Captivating and cunning\, the group has been featured in Rolling Stone\, Vibe\, Q\, Reuters\, and The New York Times\, and has appeared on MTV\, CNN\, BBC\, and Al Jazeera. \nRecently signing with UK label Cooking Vinyl (Goldie\, Groove Armada\, Trio Joubran\, 47Soul) they are gearing to release their new album Between Hannah and Mannah and will be playing at the Jazz Cafe as part of their highly-anticipated England tour.

SUMMARY:Blakey's Boys
DESCRIPTION:Firmly established as one of the UK’s finest jazz outfits\, Blakey’s Boys sold out every show in 2017 and 2018. Blakey’s Boys pays tribute to Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers with an all star band. \nOpening with songs from Blakey’s hit album Moanin’\, the boys play arrangements of favourites such as Blues March\, Moanin’ and Are You Real. The band play with Blakey’s trademark raw energy and deep swing whilst paying homage to composers Benny Golson\, Lee Morgan\, Bobby Timmons and Wayne Shorter. \n \nBetween numbers\, Ronnie Scott’s Paul Pace takes the stage to narrate the Art Blakey story and give a vivid picture of the various editions of the Messengers\, their featured players along with personal recollections of their live performances. \nThe second set is a selection of the favourites from Blakey’s career with the band storming in with tunes such as Ping Pong\, Nica’s Dream\, Caravan and A Night in Tunisia to name a few. \nExpect a night of hard swinging action that will keep you on the edge of your seat. \n  \n \n  \n“A musical journey featuring all of the Blakey favourites.\nThe band capture the true Blakey energy and deliver an explosive performance.”\nTime Out London \nThe band was formed 3 years ago for a one of Jazz Festival in France. After a sell-out show\, Matt Telfer decided the project was an important tool for keeping Art Blakey and Jazz in general alive. Months of hard work perfecting the Art Blakey style and energy the band started gigging. Using the compositions of Lee Morgan\, Bobby Timmons\, Wayne Shorter and Lee Morgan the band took to the stage to tell the Blakey story. Playing to sold out venues in the 2015 and 2016 EFG London Jazz Festivals\, word started to get around about the new Jazz Messengers band. Kicking 2017 off with yet another sell out gig at Pizza Express\, Blakey’s Boys are set for big things in 2017! \n“A toe tapping\, finger clicking gig that swings hard and delivers an entertaining and educational performance.”\nMidlands Arts Review \nPaul Pace – Narrator\nMatt Telfer – Saxophone / Band Leader\nAndy Davies – Trumpet\nChris Jerome – Piano\nMiles Danso – Double Bass\nGabor Dornyei – Drums \n  \nGET YOUR TICKETS HERE\n

SUMMARY:#ConcertLab: The Sound Within
DESCRIPTION:Roam through an orchestra as it plays\, immersing yourself within a symphony. \nWith Southbank Sinfonia’s musicians scattered across the room\, wander between instruments to gain new sonic perspectives and experience an orchestra in an entirely new way. \nAlongside this\, spatial sound and British Sign Language interpretation will help to take you inside the mind of Beethoven as his hearing vanished\, leaving a man teetering on the precipice of either genius or self-destruction. Voiced by Anton Lesser (Wolf Hall\, Game of Thrones\, The Crown)\, Beethoven’s volatile character mirrors his ‘Eroica’ Symphony\, paving the way for revolution. \n \nAfter the main performance\, an after-party with full bar will stay open until late\, with more live music for entertainment. \nAUDIENCE REVIEWS FOR PREVIOUS #CONCERTLAB PERFORMANCES:\n“Simply one of the best classical concerts I have seen\, and certainly the most innovative.” \n“Honestly\, I can’t remember the last time I felt so exhilarated and moved by any performance. Really spellbinding.” \n“Completely brilliant. Can’t stop thinking about it\, and very much wish you were doing it all again – because I’d definitely come and bring others with me.” \n   Click for the picture for Lessons!

SUMMARY:KaddalMerrill - Rain Over Nubia tour opens in London
DESCRIPTION:Egyptian\, Nubian and British musical traditions combine to create a unique fusion \nKaddal Merrill is the collaboration of classically trained Egyptian flautist Fayrouz Kaddal (High Dam Band\, Africairo) and innovative British folk fiddler Daniel Merrill (Dead Rat Orchestra). Backed by Egyptian master percussionists including Ayman Mabrouk (who has appeared with the likes of Fathy Salama and Gilberto Gil) their first UK tour opens with London date at Bloomsbury’s atmospheric Horse Hospital in on 12 August with a support set from Dead Rat Orchestra. \nCombining traditionally melodic instrumentation of flute and violin\, KaddalMerrill weave together an uplifting and joyous fusion of Egyptian\, Nubian and British musical traditions. Underpinned by exuberant Egyptian percussion and the polyrhythmic drum grooves of Sudanese dance\, this is music that invites you not so much on a journey but into the intimate space of the music’s creators\, as they explore their cultural and musical roots. \nThe intricate melodies of Kaddal’s flute and Merrill’s violin dive\, dance and spin through the heady beats of traditional Middle Eastern drums. Both sun soaked and rain drenched\, this intimate music speaks of musicians probing their imaginings of place\, culture and identity. \n‘This is music we’ve had in mind for some time\, since I started spending time in Egypt six years ago’ said Daniel. ‘We always thought that the mix of cultures would provide fertile ground for our creativity’ added Fayrouz ‘but the results have taken us to another place altogether’. \nDaniel Merrill is best known for his work with the lusciously bearded free folk ensemble Dead Rat Orchestra. For the last six years he has been travelling to Egypt to make music in Cairo and Alexandria\, becoming fascinated with the music of Nubia. Fayrouz Kaddal has performed and recorded with likes of AfriCairo and High Dam Band\, exploring the African aspects of Egypt’s heritage. Additionally she is researching the effect of displacement on the music of the Nubian people. \nHear samples from the album and see Egyptian concert footage at http://www.kaddalmerrill.com \nThe debut KaddalMerrill album Rain Over Nubia will be released on CD and download on Antigen Records\, (Antigen 311) on August 12 to coincide with the tour. It features masterful performances from musicians from Egypt\, Sudan and Eritrea. Alongside percussion duo Bouda Abdul-Yazeed and Wessam Moktar\, contributors include Ahmed Omar (Eritrean/Egyptian bass player and founder of AfriCairo)\, Ashraf Awad (Sudanese Oud player with The Nile Project) Zizo Tag (Egyptian Oud player and sometime Pauline Oliveros collaborator) and Ahmed Samir Rashwan (saxophonist with RT Nuba). \nRecorded between Krouma Camp\, Soheil Island in Aswan\, The Sudanese Club in Alexandria\, and El Warsha Studios\, Giza\, the album is packaged with the beautiful illustrations of Egyptian artist Rana Kadry.
