SUMMARY:LANDE HEKT + THE POPGUNS + MUMBLE TIDE
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents….. \nLANDE HEKT\nTHE POPGUNS\nMUMBLE TIDE\nSunday 19 April\nMOTH Club\, Old Trades Hall\, Valette St\, London\, E9 6NU\n7pm | £13.50 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/f4d01f8d742e \nLANDE HEKT has quietly become one of the UK’s best underground songwriters. On her 2021 debut full-length\, Going To Hell\, and 2022’s House Without a View\, she explored her queer identity\, sobriety\, and childhood trauma through the lens of heartfelt\, conversational indie-pop\, which led to spots opening for the likes of Alvvays\, Throwing Muses\, and The Beths. Her new album\, Lucky Now\, written and recorded with producer Matthew Simms (Wire\, It Hugs Back)\, reflects the most mature and confident version of Lande Hekt yet. “I’m not as concerned about how I’m presenting myself\,” Hekt says. “I’ve tried to think less about how things are coming across\, and just write songs that make me feel connected to myself and what I value.”\nHekt’s musical touchstones – The Wedding Present\, The Sundays\, The Replacements – remain the same\, but at the same time\, she’s delved deeper into other influences. Lucky Now is indebted to 1980s twee-pop and jangle-pop like The Pastels\, Tallulah Gosh and The Bats\, as well as to more modern iterations of the sound\, such as Autocamper and Jeanines\, in its ecstatic\, soaring melodies and gorgeous\, tactile guitars. The sound is fitting for Hekt’s new lyrical outlook\, where\, though despair and anxiety rear their heads\, she digs deep to find the gratitude. During the album’s recording\, Hekt also moved from Bristol back to her hometown of Exeter. In a lot of ways\, Lucky Now is about return – return to joy\, return to places and parts of the self once left behind. Who you once were can seem unreachable\, but sometimes you can build a bridge. \nhttps://landehekt.bandcamp.com \nTHE POPGUNS are an indie pop band formed in Brighton in 1986\, known for their melodic sound\, chiming guitars\, and the vocals of Wendy Morgan (now Pickles). Often associated with the late 80s/early 90s indie scene\, they achieved success with singles like “Landslide” and quintessential albums ‘Eugenie’ and ‘Snog’ before a hiatus. In 2012\, the band resumed live performances with six gigs. A three-track 7″ single\, “Lovejunky”\, was released in late 2014\, followed by a new album\, ‘Pop Fiction’\, on Matinée Recordings. Soundblab ranked the album at Number 2 on their Top 10 Releases of the year. The band have continued to tour and record new material\, and released the single “So Long” in May 2017\, followed quickly by the album ‘Sugar Kisses’.\nhttps://thepopguns.bandcamp.com/ \nMUMBLE TIDE is a Bristol-based DIY indie-pop duo formed by vocalist/lyricist Gina Leonard and multi-instrumentalist/producer Ryan Rogers. Known for their “scrappy” bedroom-pop sound\, the former couple creates music that blends grunge\, folk\, and electronic elements. Inspired by the free-flowing rhythms of 60’s American folk\, the aim was to find a balance between Roger’s vivid arrangements and Leonard’s evocative lyrics\, one that truly captured the bittersweet depths of their songwriting. The group’s debut album\, ‘Might As Well Play Another One’\, was released last year on Breakfast Records. \nhttps://mumbletide.bandcamp.com/music

SUMMARY:EFG London Jazz Festival - SUNDAY: Finding Ways + more tba
DESCRIPTION:ONE OFF SUNDAY SPECIAL FOR EFG LONDON JAZZ FESTIVAL Sunday 23 November 8 pm \n\n\nThe CockpitSeb Rochford’s Finding Ways\nMore artists TBA \n\nSeb Rochford’s Finding Ways @sebrochford\nIn 2003\, drummer Sebastian Rochford formed Polar Bear – a contemporary jazz group that\, over the next decade\, helped define a new era in British music. Their sound was bold\, open-hearted\, and influential\, earning two Mercury Prize nominations and widespread acclaim. Since then\, Seb’s distinctive voice has been heard across a broad spectrum of music\, collaborating with artists including Patti Smith\, Damon Albarn\, Grace Jones and Brian Eno. This year\, he returns as a bandleader with Finding Ways\, layering up to three guitars at a time around his drums and bass\, the album featuring ten different guitarists. He’s joined by a remarkable set of collaborators and guests\, including Tara Cunningham\, David Preston\, Simon Tong\, Leo Abrahams\, Matt Hurley\, Adrian Utley\, John Parish\, Seye Adelekan\, Anders Christensen and Ruth Goller – each adding something unmistakably their own\, and it’s this space they’re given to be themselves that defines the sound. This is honest music-making. Nothing is forced. Nothing boxed in. Finding Ways. That’s what Seb is doing—musically\, emotionally\, personally. \n\n‘The Finding Ways music is about Finding Ways to keep positive and navigate the world around us’.\n\n\n\nContemporary and Traditional Jazz Bands are available for Hire via Music for London.

SUMMARY:Matilda Rowe presents Creases Live
DESCRIPTION:Matilda Rowe brings together some of London’s best musicians to perform her expansive debut project – Creases – for the first time ever\,  in an immersive\, live launch unlike any other. \nIn the round and in two acts\, central force of the independent music scene\, Matilda Rowe\, will be bringing the audience intimately and boldly into the world she has spent the last five years building. \nCreases is an expansive coming-of-age experience\, capturing pockets of humanity in each of its layers. Full of drama and insightful prescience\, Matilda takes you by the hand – with her honest lyrics and powerful voice – through tumultuous turns and raw catharsis. \nInspired by the likes of Nina Simone\, Amy Winehouse\, Portishead\, Lianne La Havas and Laura Marling\, the project oscillates wildly and deliberately across genres with a storytelling spine and beating heart of Jazz. \nHaving been taught and mentored as a teen by Jazz FM Awards 2025 Vocalist of the Year\, Alice Zawadzki\, Matilda is now known for her poignant lyrics and distinctive sound that blends jazz and indie folk. She has captivated audiences across the UK with her magnetic performances\, poetic lyricism and unpredictable melodies\, and has built a loyal following because of it. \nJust as Creases blurs lines of expectation and genre\, the show will do the same\, pushing the boundaries of what a gig can be in the name of storytelling and communal experience. \nCapturing ‘the live’ was at the heart of her intention when she came to producer\, Gareth Finnegan (Comet is Coming\, Imogen Heap)\, with the demos in December 2023. And so\, almost two years later\, it is only right that we let it take the stage it was born for and witness how it breathes. \nWe look forward to seeing you there. \n  \nMusicians Hire London

SUMMARY:PHEW + ISAIAH HULL + FREDDIE MURPHY
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nPHEW\nISAIAH HULL\nFREDDIE MURPHY\nTuesday 4 November\nICA\, The Mall\, London\, SW1Y 5AH\n7.30pm | £16 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/j37d81ca0772 \nPHEW is a legendary figure in Japanese underground music. Phew was a founding member of the legendary Japanese punk band Aunt Sally. After the band’s breakup in 1979\, she continued her career as a solo artist\, releasing a collaborative single with Ryuichi Sakamoto in 1980\, and her first solo album\, ‘Phew’\, with Conny Plank\, Holger Czukay of CAN\, and Jaki Liebezeit in 1981. In 1992\, her third album\, ‘Our Likeness’\, was released on MUTE (recently reissued)\, again at Conny’s studio\, with Jaki Liebezeit of CAN\, Alexander Hacke of Einstürzende Neubauten\, and Chrislo Haas of DAF. Since the beginning of the 2010s\, she has released a series of works that combine voice and electronic music\, and has gained international recognition as a forward facing electronic artist. She has also released collaborative works with Ana da Silva (Raincoats)\, Yoshimi (Boredoms\, OOIOO) and others. Phew’s expansive ‘Vertical Jamming’ was released on vinyl for the first time via Disciples last year\, whilst Mute recently released her stunning record ‘New Decade’; a stark\, haunted album\, populated by voices that intone empty pleasantries in English and Japanese\, against a backdrop of fractured\, dubbed-out electronics. \nhttps://phewjapan.bandcamp.com/music \nISAIAH HULL is a poet and rapper from London\, appearing often alongside frequent collaborator / producer aloisius. Hull’s music glistens in a ghostly way. Heart-wrenching and laugh-inducing in equal measure\, Hull deems himself a “stand-up tragedian.” Above minimal\, glittering production\, reminiscent of Triad God or Dean Blunt\, and dark glitch-imbued beats that sound like they’re emitting from turntable on its last legs\, Hull shares his heartfelt and diaristic poems-as-tracks – witty and harrowed and never shying from the grim political realities of life in the UK. Combining impeccable flow with singular production\, Hull is an unstoppable force to be reckoned with. Hull’s debut album ‘Pocomania’ was released through Young earlier this year. \nhttps://young.bandcamp.com/album/pocomania \nFREDDIE MURPHY is a sound artist and curator based in Torino\, Italy. His sonic research has shifted from cathartic performances to express the Catholic sense of guilt to an intimate investigation on feelings of loss and acceptance connected with grief\, using an approach to composition that is bound to visual imagery and concepts linked to rituality. His musical practice involves experimenting on the duality of natural/synthetic\, using acoustic recordings processed into synthetic sounds\, as well as mimicking natural sounds using analogue tools. As a founding member of the seminal experimental outfit Father Murphy he released a series of concept albums on labels such as Joyful Noise\, The Flenser\, Avant! and performed extensively across the world. Appearances include Venice Biennale and Santarcangelo Festival (IT)\, Dark Mofo Festival (Australia)\, Le Guess Who!? Festival (NL). \nhttps://linktr.ee/freddiemurphy

SUMMARY:The Coveryard presents Dancing on Our Own - 90s female singer-songwriters

SUMMARY:Parricelli\, Mullov-Abbado\, Clarvis Trio
DESCRIPTION:Doors open 7pm\, music from 8pm. \nJohn Parricelli (born 5 April 1959 in Evesham\, Wychavon\, Worcestershire\, England) is a jazz guitarist who has worked mainly in the United Kingdom. \nParricelli began his career as a guitarist in 1982. He was one of the founding members of the British big band Loose Tubes\, with whom he recorded three albums. He has worked with Annie Whitehead\, Kenny Wheeler\, Norma Winstone\, Lee Konitz\, Paul Motian\, Chris Laurence\, Peter Erskine\, Vince Mendoza\, Julian Argüelles\, Iain Ballamy\, Mark Lockheart\, Andy Sheppard\, Gerard Presencer\, Colin Towns\, and Stacey Kent \nAward-winning\, London-based jazz bass player\, composer and arranger Misha Mullov-Abbado is a musician who combines great imagination with raw talent and a clear vision. A BBC New Generation Artist and with three critically acclaimed albums on Edition Records under his name\, his most recent offering Effra showcases his ‘melodic gift’ (John Fordham\, The Guardian) and ability to masterfully combine beautifully-crafted compositions with free-spirited improvisation. Written over a three-year period the self-produced album\, released in early 2025 on Ubuntu Music\, marks the arrival of an artist who has been on a voyage of self-discovery. \nHis aforementioned collective features some of the most exhilarating and sought-after young musicians in London and was formed during Misha’s final year at Royal Academy of Music over a decade ago. An experienced band-leader and versatile sideman\, Misha regularly performs all over the UK and around the world\, including at top London venues such as Ronnie Scott’s\, the Vortex\, King’s Place and Royal Albert Hall. His vast musical travels have led him to work alongside inspiring musicians such as Alice Zawadzki\, Dave O’Higgins\, Fred Thomas\, Tim Garland\, Viktoria Mullova\, Enzo Zirilli\, Sam Lee\, Rob Luft\, Paul Clarvis\, Stan Sulzmann and Nessi Gomes. In 2024 he was part of a release on ECM Records Za Górami in a trio with Alice Zawadzki and Fred Thomas which was The Guardian’s Jazz album of the month. \nA prolific composer and arranger in his own right\, Misha embraces his jazz\, classical\, pop and folk influences and writes for a variety of jazz groups\, as well as various classical soloists and ensembles. Commissions include work with the Hermes Experiment\, Norfolk & Norwich Festival\, LSSO\, Hill Quartet\, Pelleas Ensemble\, NW Live Arts and BBC Radio 3\, the latter of which commissioned his cello concerto which was premiered at London’s Southbank Centre by Matthew Barley and the BBC Concert Orchestra. \nIt’s only a matter of time before Misha seals his place on the international scene at the forefront of a new generation of European creative. \nIt wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to say that accomplished percussionist Paul Clarvis has performed with everyone you know and on everything you love. Clarvis was the late Leonard Bernstein’s preferred London percussionist and helped Rick Smith with the drum arrangement for the London Olympics 2012 show-stopping opening\, as well as having worked with high-profile musicians like Mick Jagger\, Stevie Wonder\, Sir Paul McCartney\, and Elton John. His film slate is just as impressive\, including memorable films like “Star Wars\,” “Harry Potter\,” “The Chronicles of Narnia\,” “Twilight\,” “Skyfall\,” “Tron\,” “Shrek\,” and “The Hobbit.” Beyond his ongoing and in-demand work as a session musician\, Clarvis is also an Honorary Associate of the Royal Academy of Music.

SUMMARY:WALT McCLEMENTS + JACKEN ELSWYTH
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nWALT McCLEMENTS\nJACKEN ELSWYTH\nWednesday 27 August\nCafe OTO\, 18-22 Ashwin St\, London\, E8 3DL\n7.30pm | £12 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/Q090a15c33bd \nWALT McCLEMENTS is an accordionist\, multi-instrumentalist and composer based in Los Angeles. His solo compositions focus on processed accordion\, creating patient and emotional meditations that nod to drone and ambient music. His debut record\, “A Hole in the Fence” was released in 2021 on American Dreams\, and utilized a minimal palette of accordions treated through guitar pedals to create glacial soundscapes and odes to hidden worlds. On his latest record and first for Western Vinyl\, “On a Painted Ocean”\, he expands his sonic tools to include lush synths\, droning pipe organs\, and spirited horns\, creating a vibrant journey from solitary stillness to community exuberance. The record also follows last year’s “Rain on the Road”\, a collaborative album with harpist Mary Lattimore\, released on Thrill Jockey. \nPrior to releasing music under his own name\, McClements has been a touring member of Weyes Blood\, Hurray for the Riff Raff\, and Dark Dark Dark\, as well as leading New Orleans art-punk brass ensemble Why Are We Building Such A Big Ship? and one man band Lonesome Leash.\nhttps://www.waltmcclements.com/ \nJACKEN ELSWYTH is a London-based folk musician\, banjo player\, and instrument builder. In her music making she is focused on exploring traditional tunes\, developing extrapolations on folk styles and techniques\, and investigating drone\, ambience\, and improvisation within and beyond folk music. Her debut album At Fargrounds (Wrong speed Records\, 2024) was described as a ‘folk-thesis for our times’ by The Quietus. Jacken also organises the Betwixt & Between split tape series\, and plays in Shovel Dance Collective too.\nhttps://jackenelswyth.bandcamp.com/ \n
