SUMMARY:Egg Day: How Fast Can You Eat A Pickled Egg?
DESCRIPTION:On Friday 18th April 2025\, The Cock Tavern in Hackney\, East London\, are holding their second annual Egg Day to find the fastest pickled egg eaters in the world with “How Fast Can You Eat A Pickled Egg?”. \nFor the last eight years the pub and more importantly the staff have become famous for keeping a scoreboard of the top 12 fastest pickled egg eaters in the world.  Luke ‘Pickle Boy’ Molloy and pub manager Eggy Joel\, hatched the ‘egg scene’ in 2016. Having become a bit of a tourist attraction\, social media has made it a hot spot amongst the pickled egg eating enthusiasts visiting London. Currently the top 12 scores are all two seconds or less\, it can be a bit intimidating for anyone wanting to see their name on the board. What makes Egg Day 2025 EGGstra special is now the board gets wiped clean\, a total reset. All that plus for one day only the board extends to Top 25. Everyone has the chance to be a recognised pickled egg eating hero. \nThe first annual Egg Day was on Good Friday 2024 and proved such a popular event\, smashing all previous bar sales and is expected to do so again with hundreds anticipated to attend including the return of 2024’s champions to defend their titles.

SUMMARY:The Big Smoke – A Fatal Exit (The Halloween Episode!) - London Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Oct 25th – A Fatal Exit: Legend has it\, should the ravens ever leave the Tower of London\, it will crumble into dust\, and great harm will befall the kingdom. But why are they there in the first place?! Come to our Halloween-themed episode of The Big Smoke to find out! \nOur guest for this show is the former Ravenmaster and current Yeoman Warder of the Tower of London Christopher Skaife\, author of the ‘London book of the year’ (Evening Standard) The Ravenmaster. You will hear him recount humorous tales of his years caretaking these unique creatures and some of the eerie legends that accompany a life lived at the Tower. \nBut that’s not all! We will also be joined by the musical duo Amyas\, featuring historical music specialists Emily Baines and Arngeir Hauksson. Exploring how music can help us connect more deeply to our emotions and fears\, Amyas will share their incredible talent for historical music with a selection of songs inspired by the ravens and Halloween! \nTickets are £8 in advance on Eventbrite\, or by donation at the door. Our event is also BYOB! Each show features fascinating conversations\, scintillating performances and interactive games! SUMMARY:Do you like it firmer or do you like it softer? Introducing… Bed Battle: Team Firm Vs Team Soft
DESCRIPTION:Do you like it firmer or do you like it softer? \n  \nTo help you decide\, eveSleep has launched a one-of-a-kind interactive event opening on 2nd to 5th May at the Gallery@Oxo aimed to help you determine how you like it in the bedroom…when it comes to mattresses that is! \n  \nThrough a series of static and interactive displays inspired by sleep data\, visitors will be guided through the event where they will work out whether they are ‘Team Firm’ or ‘Team Soft’ by testing a selection of different mattresses. \n  \nOpen to the public from 2pm on Thursday 2nd May\, the experience will include a variety of different activities to help visitors discover 2 different comfort experiences including: \nPrincess and the Eve \nMuch like the Princess and the Pea\, many people are sensitive sleepers and aren’t happy with the mattress they currently have. Would you still feel the pea under multiple mattresses like the princess? \nVisitors will get to recreate their own Princess and the Pea moment testing two different stacks of mattresses.  One stack will conceal a hidden pea at the bottom.  Consumers will be challenged to uncover which mattress has the hidden pea. \nPeople who guess correctly will be entered into a daily prize draw to win a free wunderflip mattress. \nSnoozebooth \nAre you a Starfish? Pillow hugger? Stomach sleeper? Visitors can unleash their inner sleep influencer by sharing their favourite sleeping position via a Snooze selfie booth. Simply jump onto the mattress and get into your optimal sleeping position\, no matter how eccentric or angular. Then\, the aerial camera will snap a pic of you in your snoozing pose. \nPress Snooze \nEveryone loves to hit the snooze button and enjoy an extra few minutes in bed\, but are you a leap-out-of-bedder or a snoozer? \nTo test if people are well slept or if they’re a professional snooze button smacker\, eveSleep has setup the ultimate reaction game. \nGet competitive to see if you can hit the snooze button the fastest. \n  \nFalling Into Bed \nFalling into bed after a tiring day is the best feeling. However\, most Brits have problems falling asleep. \nUsing inversion goggles\, eveSleep has made falling into bed a bit more challenging. The public will be put to the test and challenged to choose between the firm and soft mattress options while their world is upside down. \nSleeping Tablets \nCan’t help but do some mindless scrolling before bed? Well\, welcome to the Bed Arcade\, where you can chill on a ‘firm’ game space mattress and play classic computer games. \nMore of a Netflix and chill type of person?  Then lie back\, relax and watch your favourite romcom from the comfort of a ‘soft’ film space mattress in our Bed Cinema! \nNap Chat \nFinally\, visitors can be featured on the digital wall by sharing their pics\, comments and thoughts on the pop-up for others to read and enjoy. \nThe experience is free to attend and is open to all ages from 6 years upwards from 2 pm on Thursday 2nd May and 11am to 6 pm on 3rd to 5th May 2024 at Gallery@Oxo. \n  \nThe new eveSleep wunderflip is a unique dual-sided mattress range – containing the very clever ‘wunderflip adaptive comfort’ feature\, which offers not one\, but two comfort levels.  This allows keen snoozers to easily switch between firm and soft mattress tensions to suit their preference simply by flipping their mattress. \neveSleep launched the new wunderflip mattress range on the 27th of March and it’s available to purchase on the eveSleep website.

SUMMARY:Areas Of Effect: Planar Systems\, Critical Roles\, and Gaming Imaginaries
DESCRIPTION:*This event has been postponed to 9 March 2024 due to train strikes\, we apologise for any inconvenience caused.*\n\nCurated by artist David Blandy and writer Jamie Sutcliffe in association with Strange Attractor Press\, Areas Of Effect: Planar Systems\, Critical Roles\, and Gaming Imaginaries is a one-day symposium on Tabletop Role Playing Games (TTRPGs) with live game sessions.\n\n\n\n\n\nForming part of arebyte’s programme The Body\, The Mind\, The Soul which questions the complex nature of humanity in the realm of technological progress\, the event brings together artists\, game designers\, theorists\, and philosophers to discuss these wildly expansive forms of play in which players utilise both their imaginations and chance mechanics (such as dice rolls) to determine the actions of fictional characters and the scenarios surrounding them.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe symposium looks at TTRPGs as the physical interface between the body and the imaginary\, addressing the hopes currently instilled in tabletop play to act as a transformative activity. As such\, this form of play presents novel opportunities for immersive experience\, problem solving\, moral dilemma\, but perhaps most importantly\, communal storytelling.\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers at the event include acclaimed RPG designers Emmy Allan\, Kayla Dice\, Mike Mason\, Chris McDowall\, Samuel Mui\, and Zedeck Siew\, alongside writers\, historians and theorists such as Stu Horvath\, Timothy Linward\, Mark Pilkington\, and Simon O’Sullivan.\n\n\n\n\n\nAn exhibition of TTRPGs-inspired video games by artists Kitty Clark\, Uma Breakdown\, John Powell-Jones\, Petra Szemán\, and Holly White are hosted on computers and available to play for visitors throughout the whole event.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe day culminates in live TTRPG play sessions of the games ECOMOFOS!! by artist David Blandy and SUPERZEROES by TTRPG game designer Samuel Mui\, amongst others\, inviting the audience to play with a deck of uniquely designed TTRPG playing cards.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe event features a selection of merchandise and publications from Strange Attractor Press and independent London-based bookshop Igloo Tree.\n\n\n\n\n\nRead more about the event here.\n\n\n\n\n\nSymposium programme:\n\n\n\n\n\n11 – 11:15am: INTRODUCTION TO TTRPGS by David Blandy and Jamie Sutcliffe\n\n\n\n\n\nStarting off the symposium\, Jamie and David welcome visitors\, introduce the programme for the day and touch upon the world of TTRPGS.\n\n\n\n\n\n11:15 – 11:45am: ON ROLEPLAYING GAMES by Simon O’ Sullivan\n\n\n\n\n\nArtist and theorist Simon O’Sullivan will begin the symposium with a keynote talk considering the imaginative spaces and practices of role-playing games considered a distinct form of fiction.\n\n\n\n\n\n11:45am – 1pm: BETWEEN HEXCRAWLS AND BIOSPHERES with Holly White\, Zedeck Siew\, David Blandy (chair)\n\n\n\n\n\nExploring the myriad functions of speculative ecology in role-playing environments\, addressing the creation of flora\, fauna and folklore that work to colour and complicate diverse worlds of play in a time of ecological collapse.\n\n\n\n\n\n1:40 – 3pm: FROM ODD PASTS TO GRIMDARK FUTURES with Timothy Linward\, Kayla Dice\, Chris McDowall (chair)\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom privately imagined locales to vast\, communally written mega texts\, this discussion will focus on the process and practice of worldbuilding\, interrogating the various textures of myth and fabulation\, asking to what ends our novel worlds might be put.\n\n\n\n\n\n3 – 3:25pm: MONSTERS\, ALIENS\, AND HOLES IN THE GROUND by Stu Horvath\n\n\n\n\n\nTTRPG historian and co-host of the Vintage RPG Podcast Stu Horvath introduces his landmark new book Monsters\, Aliens\, and Holes In The Ground: A Guide to Tabletop Roleplaying Games From D&D To Mothership\, published in 2023 by the MIT Press.\n\n\n\n\n\n3:35 – 5pm: NAMELESS HORRORS! CREEPING FLESH! with Mike Mason\, Emmy Allen\, Sam Mui\, Mark Pilkington\n\n\n\n\n\nFocusing on the aesthetics\, politics\, and arresting experiences of horror\, this conversation will look to various exercises in the macabre\, horrific\, and supernatural to test role-playing’s capacities for innovative storytelling\, moral quandary\, and new forms of autobiographical fiction.\n\n\n\n\n\n5:15 – 8:30pm: LIVE TTRPG PLAY with David Blandy\, Samuel Mui\n\n\n\n\n\nFollowing these insightful talks\, have a go at playing alternative TTRPGs with friends and other visitors! The games will be facilitated by TTRPG experts and game designers.\n\n\n\n\n\nThroughout the entire symposium\, a selection of TTRPG-inspired video games will be free to be played on computers in the gallery. Spanning from ecological utopias to imaginary lives\, see below for the full list of games and their retrospective game designers.\n\n\n\n\n\n***\n\n\n\n\n\nJamie Sutcliffe is a writer\, curator\, and co-director of Strange Attractor Press. His work explores artistic encounters with science fictive fabulation\, the politics of gaming\, animation and its multiple entanglements with developments in the life sciences\, haunted media\, the digital uncanny\, and the persistence of myth\, all understood as technologies of selfhood. He is the editor of Documents of Contemporary Art: Magic\, published by The Whitechapel Gallery and The MIT Press\, and his essays\, reviews\, and interviews have been featured in Art Monthly\, Frieze\, The White Review\, Rhizome\, Art Review\, The Quietus\, Art Agenda\, Bricks From The Kiln\, and IsThisIt\, amongst others. @intron_depot\n\n\n\n\n\nDavid Blandy (1976\, UK\, Lives & Works in Brighton) makes work that slips between performance and video\, digital and analogue\, investigating the stories and cultural forces that inform and influence our lives. Collaboration is central to his practice\, examining communal and personal heritage and interdependence. With research spanning multiple forms of archives\, from fandoms to the archive of the body\, historical texts to academic libraries\, archaeology and ecological theory\, twitch streams and film archives\, Blandy weaves poetic works that explore the complexities of the contemporary subject. @david_blandy_\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent made in partnership with Strange Attractor Press and Igloo Tree.

SUMMARY:Make Britain Smile - Charity Board Game Day
DESCRIPTION:This October half term\, Asmodee – one of the UK’s top family games distributors – is hosting the ultimate board game day at Draughts Waterloo to raise money for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. \n\n\n\nAsmodee\, one of the world’s biggest board game companies\, are on a mission – to bring some fun to families this half term and put a smile on everyone’s face and some joy into hearts. So make sure you and your families have Thursday\, 26th October\, firmly in your diaries.  \n\n\n\nEveryone is welcome to play or learn how to play some incredibly fun board games this half-term holiday. We will have games that children and teens from 5 – 15 will enjoy\, plus demonstrators to show everyone how it is all done.  \n\n\n\nAnd who better to team up with than the well-known games café – Draughts in Waterloo\, London\, who are all about board games and having fun? This spectacular Play Day is open to all. Booking is essential so you don’t miss out!  \n\n\n\nThe fun and games begin at 10 am and last until 6 pm. Families can book into a three-hour slot with those all-important\, professional games demonstrators who will make the rules simple and the game play exhilarating – the perfect solution for the half-term slump\, parents – we got you! \n\n\n\nFamous games like Dobble\, Dobble Connect\, Taco\, Cat\, Goat\, Cheese\, Pizza and Bananagrams will feature in the day alongside Christmas hot list games such as Bunny Hops!\, Pass the Bomb\, and Toodles – there is something for everyone. \n\n\n\nOn the day\, donations are encouraged\, with every penny going to the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust (https://www.ellenmacarthurcancertrust.org/) to inspire young people aged 8-24 to believe in a brighter future living through and beyond cancer. Lindsay Nehorai\, the Trust’s Fundraising Manager\, said: “Asmodee’s games play a big role in bringing young people together on Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust adventures. No trip is complete without an iconic night of Dobble below deck.  \n\n\n\nYoung people living through and beyond cancer often feel isolated from others their own age\, so the laughter and the friendships they make while playing games together is an integral part of rediscovering themselves and believing in a brighter future.”  \n\n\n\nThe idea of a Play Day came from Asmodee’s Head of Product – Commercial\, Greg Stanton\, who said: “October half term can place a big demand on families\, especially when trying to keep the children happy and entertained. We wanted to help and decided to put on a fabulous day for everyone to enjoy with any donations made\, benefitting the lives of children in the UK who are coping with cancer.  We hope everyone will have something to smile about this half term with our Play Day special\,” he said. \n\n\n\nIn collaboration with Draughts\, Events Manager Dan Gyte added\, “When our friends at Asmodee came to us with this idea\, we immediately said yes.  We all need some fun in our lives\, and this seemed to be such a positive initiative for families this half term. Our whole ethos is about playing games\, and Asmodee is helping more people to play more games more often\, so we are perfect partners. The fact that we can put on this event and also help young people who need support after illness\, alongside the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust\, is an absolute bonus.”

SUMMARY:Game Music Festival vol.4 - Royal Albert Hall
DESCRIPTION:This time\, the fully-fledged festival dedicated to video game soundtracks will take place at the famous Royal Festival Hall in London. On the 5th and 6th of March 2022\, the venue will play host to original arrangements of fan-favourite video game soundtracks and various accompanying events. In addition\, an educational programme will take place on the first day\, while the second day will be dedicated to live concerts. The three previous editions of the Game Music Festival have been praised by fans worldwide\, attracting an audience of over 12\,000 on-site guests in total. The Game Music Foundation organises the whole initiative\, and tickets are now available at gmfest.com. \nThe Jazz of Cuphead is the first concert at GMF 2022. The exuberant jazz score of Cuphead\, an unmistakably stylish platformer\, will be interpreted on stage by a seasoned big band. Full of early styles of jazz mixed with ragtime music\, the original soundtrack of Cuphead swiftly transports the listener to a world inspired by Duke Ellington and Count Basie\, but always with a twist. All of this has led to Cuphead winning the well-deserved BAFTA Games Award for Best Music. Cuphead’s composer\, Kristofer Maddigan\, will join the audience to see his score brought to life by the Bartosz Pernal Orchestra – an ensemble of experienced musicians led by a charismatic trombone player. \nLauded by critics and millions of fans worldwide upon release\, Ori and the Will of the Wisps was soon hailed as a masterpiece\, with exceptional merit given to its unforgettable score by Gareth Coker\, a multi-BAFTA-nominated composer and winner of the 2021 Ivor Novello Award for Best Original Video Game Score. Together with Ori and the Blind Forest\, these universally acclaimed soundtracks comprise the musical programme of The Symphony of the Spirits\, the second concert of Game Music Festival 2022. These arrangements have been created by maestro Robert Kurdybacha\, who is no stranger to the music of video games – he has arranged several fan-favourite symphonies for previous editions of the festival. Gareth Coker will also attend this special occasion at the Royal Festival Hall. The performance by the Philharmonia Orchestra and Hertfordshire Chorus will take the audience on a journey through Ori’s world as never before. \nGame Music Festival will present these concerts and multiple educational events. On Saturday the 5th of March\, the GMF 2022 educational programme will host masterclass workshops and other sessions\, where participants will be able to see how audio is created for games\, improve their skills and learn many tips and tricks in the field. Details of the educational programme will be unveiled later on. These sessions will be a unique opportunity to look into the world of music and sound in modern video games. This will be an excellent event for anyone who plans to build a career composing or designing sound in games.
