DESCRIPTION:The Notting Hill Carnival\, Europe’s biggest street festival is organised by Notting Hill Carnival Limited. \nThe festival is filled with free open-air performances and always joined by a massive parade with live and recorded music\, dancers and performers. \n \n  \n \n  \n  \nCelebrating the Carnival’s establishment and ongoing development; Caribbean \nCulture; artistic talents and creativity; enhancement of community spirit and \ninnovative platforms embracing cultural diversity. \n  \n\n\n \n  \nSchedule  \n\nSunday\, August 25th will start early\, at 6:00 am\, with a traditional carnival opening performed in the Caribbean Islands called J’Ouvert. This event’s main attraction is a parade comprised of revelers donned with mug and brightly colored paints. A Children’s Parade will stroll through the streets during the day and at night as children dance and perform in ornate costumes\, swirling the brilliant-colored clothing. Sunday is the best day for families with young children with smaller crowds of people and plenty of kid-inspired floats in the parade. \n \n\n\nAll day and into the night Sunday you can catch live music on stages in Emslie Horniman’s Pleasance Park and Powis Square and sample incredible foods from vendors while listening to all kinds of Caribbean inspired music from 38 static sound systems. \n\n\nAs always\, the Grand Finale will be on Monday\, August 26th with a culmination of dancing\, street performances\, steel drum music groups\, and the Notting Hill Grand Finale Parade. With more than a dozen events over a 3 week period\, this triple-bill is an all star line up showcasing some of North Africa’s most moving acts and the closing performance of STANCES مواقف festival. \nRaï | Gnawa | African | Electronics | Chaabi | Rock | Trance \nThis is a ticketed event. Tickets available through Rich Mix. \nSPEED CARAVAN\nFuelled by the creative fire Mehdi Haddab\, Speed Caravan is the Paris-based quartet charged towards a psychedelic horizon. Taking traditional Algerian influences and the unique appeal of Raï genre\, the band rips through unstoppable electronic beats\, grooves and raw rock energy. Haddab\, a virtuoso oud player\, has turned it’s classical role on its head\, instead turning the oud into unapologetic rock and roll instrument. With their first album\, Kalashnik Love\, Mehdi and his Speed Caravan have created a ‘contemporary music caravan’; as Songlines writes: “Haddab has fused history and technical brilliance with rage and energy\, and created something quite phenomenal.” \nGHOULA (A/V set)\nIn Tunisia\, music has been a generational vehicle for popular symbols\, images and myths. Despite its small size\, Ghoula sees his native country as a north African crossroad where legacies came to settle. As a producer and multi-instrumentalist posing his sounds on a backdrop of captivating images\, Ghoula creates genre-defying sets through both acoustics and samples. Obsessed with North African multimedia heritage\, Ghoula has been digging up vinyls from flea markets and old Tunisian medinas\, bringing back vestiges of forgotten music and kiKitsch visuals\, all cooked on top of contemporary upbeat dance rhythms. \nGNAWA LONDON\nLed by Moroccan Gnawa artist and award-winning ambassador for Gnawa music Simo Lagnawi\, the band pays its own unique tribute to North Africa’s most prolific musical tradition and sacred trance music. His solo debut album ‘Gnawa London’ released on Waulk records was featured in Songlines magazine as one of their ‘Top of the World Albums’ as he’s also been nominated in their ‘Best Newcomer’ and ‘Best Artist’ categories. DESCRIPTION:Sharon Drew has been invited to exhibit her abstract paintings at William Road Gallery. By recreating the sensation of light\, colour\, rhythm and movement Drew finds in landscape\, her work brings a visceral element to the gallery setting. \nThis new series includes large-scale paintings and captures the essence of visits to urban and coastal shorelines. Building up opaque and translucent layers with repetitive and rhythmic gestures she emulates the constant fluctuations of nature. \nIn contrast to the measured and calculated methods of the architects whose practice houses the gallery\, Drew’s works result from a process of only just controlling the paint\, of letting the material lead the way. The desire is to be spontaneous and completely in the moment\, and to share this sense of immersion with the viewer. \n  \nMondays-Fridays
