SUMMARY:Rana Begum In Conversation with Anne Barlow
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lively evening with one of the most exciting artists working in Britain today\, Rana Begum\, in conversation with Anne Barlow\, Director of Tate St Ives\, who hosted Rana’s solo exhibition in 2018. The talk will coincide with Rana’s exhibition at Whitechapel Gallery Is This Tomorrow? (14 Feb-12 May). \nThe work of London-based artist Rana Begum distills spatial and visual experience into ordered form. Through her refined language of Minimalist abstraction\, Begum blurs the boundaries between sculpture\, painting and architecture. Her visual language draws from the urban landscape as well as geometric patterns from traditional Islamic art and architecture. Light is fundamental to her process. Her works absorb and reflect varied densities of light to produce an experience for the viewer that is both temporal and sensorial. \nAbout Rana Begum\nBorn in Bangladesh in 1977\, Rana Begum lives and works in London. In 1999\, she graduated with a BA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art and Design and\, in 2002\, gained an MFA in Painting from Slade School of Fine Art. If you have something interesting to share\, please bring it with you – but it will need to pass the security checks at the entrance! \n7.15-9.00pm Walkabout –    We’ll wander around together\, exploring the different talks\, activities and demonstrations throughout the evening. Sometimes when the theme of the evening does not have strong links to Computing\, we plan our own activities. \n9pm+ Departure – the Science Museum remains open until 9.45pm\, but choose to leave around 9pm or earlier\, particularly when it’s a school day the following day. So stay for as little or long as you wish. \nOn the last Wednesday of every month (except December)\, the Science Museum closes at 6pm and then re-opens again from 6.45pm until 10:00pm for “Lates”\, an evening packed full of talks\, demonstrations and hands-on activities. If you arrive before doors open at 6.45pm\, you’ll need to join the lengthy queue outside on Exhibition Road. \n  \nClick to register: \nRegistration\nSupport the Science Museum: Please either make a donation here\, when you arrive\, or purchase something from the gift shop to support the work of the Science Museum. \nCan’t attend\, won’t attend: Don’t be disappointed if you can’t make this event – you could host something very similar in your school without requiring too much fuss or organisation. SUMMARY:Lilia Mazurkevich Solo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:M1 Fine Art – Greenwich is proud to present Lilia Mazurkevich’s eagerly anticipated solo exhibition. \nLilia Mazurkevich spent many years training extensively in some of Eastern Europe’s most respected art establishments. Following this training\, during her professional early years in the late 1980s\, she worked as an illustrator for national Ukrainian newspapers from her nearby home country of Belarus. This led to many lucrative deals with publishing houses across the globe throughout the ‘90s and ‘00s\, creating works of art for the covers and content of internationally distributed novels and research-focused textbooks; something which\, for the first time in her life\, saw her leave her beloved homeland behind and integrate fully into the western world. \nAs a result of her growing worldwide reputation in the years surrounding the turn of the century\, the canvases released to the market from Mazurkevich’s studio became highly sought after by collectors and two distinct styles began to emerge and become defined. \nBy 2012\, Mazurkevich’s astronomical rise in popularity on the commercial art scene had seen her works accepted into the Phantasten Museum in Vienna\, Austria; she had also been shortlisted at the Royal Academy of Arts’ Summer Exhibition and the BP Portrait Award at The National Portrait Gallery\, both in London\, UK. \nAt this exhibition\, there will be on display an array of creatures from Lilia’s ‘Day’ series\, including never-before-seen originals and a brand new collection of limited edition prints. Browse the art gallery at your leisure and learn more about Lilia Mazurkevich by speaking to our knowledgeable and friendly art consultants.

SUMMARY:Lost Narratives: A Hidden World of Urbex Photography
DESCRIPTION:Join Atlas Obscura for a talk on urban exploration — Urbex — and what it takes to photograph abandoned buildings all over the world. \nUrban Exploration has always been a popular pastime to rule breakers and renegades\, but with the advent of social media\, especially Instagram\, there has been a new rise in its visibility. Once only available to those who were willing to risk the dangers of entering decaying structures\, modern technology has made it possible for photographers to share what’s inside ruins around the world with the world. Viewing this practice through the eyes of an expert will help us uncover more about the compulsion to go off the beaten track and share these discoveries. \nThe talk will be given by urban explorerer and photographer Claire Alaxandra Powell\, and she’ll discuss how keeping secrets within the urbex community helps preserve these structures for the future\, and the history behind the places she’s photographed all over Europe. Claire herself has been hunting for ruins for the past decade in England\, Germany\, Italy\, Vietnam\, Cambodia\, the United States\, and more\, and will bring this wealth of experience and knowledge to share. \nOur event will be hosted in the Asylum Chapel\, an 1824 chapel whose interior was ruined by an incendiary device during World War II. The interior\, almost entirely destroyed from the explosion\, remains in much the same state today.

SUMMARY:Roys People Art Fair

He has joined forces with Sam to add more artistic experience and knowledge to make the shows as successful as possible. \nHere at Roy’s People Art Fair\, the team strongly believe in promoting all levels of artists from emerging to established. We work closely with each of our artists to ensure the fair becomes a successful experience.

SUMMARY:DEPARTURES: A Photographic Journey Through the Islamic World
DESCRIPTION:Drawing upon a unique collection of historical photographs and postcards\, Departures will reveal the great diversity of the Islamic world’s social and cultural life. The exhibition will explore a geographical area from Morocco in the West to China in the East\, and from the Balkans in the North to Sudan in the South. Historical photographs from the mid 19th century to the mid 20th century will be shown alongside a selection of contemporary images from amateur photographers on Instagram. \nOrganised by Asia House and The Barakat Trust\, and curated by Tarik Alireza and Richard Wilding\, Departures will highlight the rich heritage of this region\, exploring its ancient urban centres such as Cairo\, Istanbul and Damascus\, its traditions of travel\, trade and artisanship\, and its varied styles of costume and architecture. The exhibition is both a celebration of this historical diversity\, and a reminder of what has been lost or weakened by cultural destruction\, social change and political upheaval. \nAden\, Yemen. Postcard\, caption: ‘Windmills at Salt works\, Aden’\, photographer ‘Mr. A. Abassi\, V. Photographic Studio\, Aden’\nFez\, Morocco. Postcard\, caption: ‘Dans les rues mystérieuses’\, photographer ‘Flandrin’\nSuez\, Egypt. Postcard\, caption: ‘Fête arabe à Suez’\, photographer and date unknown.\nUzbekistan. Photographic print in album.\nBosnia Postcard\, publisher J. Studnička & Co.\, Sarajevo\nIran. Postcard\, caption: ‘Persian lady in home dress’\, publisher Raphael Tuck & Sons\, London.\nThe title Departures defines the exhibition as a journey of discovery beyond the narrow stereotypes of the region as sectarian\, war torn and culturally bereft. It also reflects the eager\, observing eyes of travellers who have questioned\, courted\, and recorded the Islamic world from the earliest days of photography. These images are the fruit of travel and enquiry\, made increasingly possible by ships and railways\, then the jet engine\, television and internet. Yet this exhibition will also suggest that\, despite the advent of these improved forms of travel and communication\, the Islamic world has become increasingly alien and misunderstood in the West. \nJuxtaposed with the exhibition’s historical photographs will be a mosaic of the Islamic world today seen through a curated sequence of images from the social media platform Instagram. These images\, taken by talented amateur photographers\, will reveal dynamic and diverse cultures – places where a multitude of people live a myriad of ordinary lives. \nThis remarkable insight into the Islamic world will encourage its audience to discover icons of antiquity and fleeting moments of the mundane. The exhibition aims to be a dialogue between past and present\, between the diverse cultures and traditions that make up the Islamic world\, and between the Islamic world and the West. \nA series of associated talks and guided visits have been organised by Asia House and The Barakat Trust to accompany the exhibition.
