SUMMARY:Your Private Sky with Sinta Tantra
DESCRIPTION:Your Private Sky” \nSINTA TANTRA \n27 July – 1 September 2018 \nKristin Hjellegjerde London \n533 Old York Road \nPRIVATE VIEW 26 July 2018 \n18:30 – 21:00 \n“Your sky may be surfaced inside with sections of global map\, with Zenith of sky\, and oriented accurately to the north… \nSun clock in day \nStar clock in night.” \nBuckminster Fuller\, manuscript for Your Private Sky\, 1948 \nKnown for her fascination with colour and composition\, Sinta Tantra’s work is a playful experiment in both scale and dimension. After a decade of making public art\, her work now ranges from small painted canvases to huge architectural installations; bold\, tropical colour to a Calder-like minimalism. Her work occupies a space at the intersection between painting and architecture\, striking a fine balance between the two-dimensional and three-dimensional\, decorative and functional\, public and private. \nYour Private Sky (27 July – 1 September 2018) at Kristin Hjellegjerde London\, Tantra’s second solo exhibition with the gallery\, draws inspiration from the life and work of the seminal American architect and polymath Buckminster Fuller\, exploring the systems of making that connect the imaginative to the everyday. Your Private Sky was the title of a 1948 manuscript in which Fuller outlined his visionary design for a glass geodesic structure – a structure that both projects and reflects\, illuminating the viewer’s position in relation to the cosmos\, and affording a global perspective on questions of common progress. \n“The idea of ‘your private sky’ expresses a twofold experience”\, says Tantra\, “a mode of thought that is both collective and individual. Blue-sky thinking\, where visionary ideas can grow from simple musings”. If Tantra’s practice began with an impulse to turn the white cube space inside-out\, then Your Private Sky represents a reverse move: bringing the lessons from public art back into the gallery space: turning ‘outside-in’\, projecting and reflecting in on itself. \n“Whereas my previous works used colour to celebrate the spectacle\, I recently started thinking about what would happen if colour was taken out of the equation\,” she says. “After studying the blueprint designs used in preparation for my public art projects\, I became fascinated by line\, and how at times it offered more imaginative possibilities than colour. Can total immersion be achieved through the simplicity of line alone? How does this relational experience alter the way we see and imagine?” \nAs such\, the works in Your Private Sky will be divided in two distinct ‘rooms’ within the gallery space: the first\, focusing on a pared down\, minimalist experience of linen paintings and sculptures based on line drawing\, systems and processes. The second\, moving into the maximalist: colour paintings and a submersive floor installation. \nFor Tantra\, the link between all these works is the metaphor of the blueprint. Like Fuller’s utopian designs\, Your Private Sky presents the blueprint both as an instructive diagram\, and as an index of imaginative possibilities. \n‘Your Private Sky’ runs from 27 July – 1 September 2018 at Kristin Hjellegjerde London

SUMMARY:100 Days to Peace
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of music and reflection to mark the centenary of the last 100 days of hostilities during the First World War. \nThe highlight of the evening’s programme will be Sir Karl Jenkins conducting his internationally acclaimed work The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace\, performed by the Royal Choral Society and the Philharmonia Orchestra. This will be the only performance of ‘The Armed Man’ in England in 2018 to be conducted by Sir Karl himself. \nThe evening will be presented by Lesley Garrett CBE who will also be performing\, alongside British mezzo-soprano Kathryn Rudge. \nAll proceeds from this event will go to three charities working to support military veterans facing mental health challenges: Help for Heroes\, Combat Stress and Heads Together – The Royal Foundation’s campaign and mental health initiative. \nAt the end of the First World War many thousands of men returned home suffering from shell-shock. With minimal understanding of the condition\, many did not benefit from the type of support which is increasingly available today. Although circumstances have changed significantly over the last 100 years\, we are ever more aware of the number of veterans who continue to need support because they suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder\, anxiety or depression. \nAs the national museum of arms and armour\, the Royal Armouries tells the stories of the men and women who have been involved in and affected by combat throughout history. As music will be at the heart of this classical evening it is fitting that Sir Karl Jenkin’s will conduct his internationally acclaimed ‘The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace’ – originally commissioned by the Royal Armouries to mark the turn of the millennium to create a legacy of peace and hope for the future. \nA better future\nChairman of the Royal Armouries\, General the Lord Dannatt GBC CBE MC DL\, comments: ‘Tragically\, the First World War did not turn out to be ‘the war to end war’ but then\, as now\, by marking the centenary of the end of the last 100 days of hostilities with this commemorative concert\, we can hope and pray for a better future. Part of that better future is helping those who have been affected by war and conflict.’

SUMMARY:Launch of Black Cultural Activism Map
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch of Black Cultural Activism Map\, the first of a two-part series of events celebrating and connecting visions\, stories\, lessons and legacies of Black and Brown cultural resistance in the UK. \nThe Stuart Hall Foundation has commissioned young artists\, activists\, designers and researchers to explore moments of cultural resistance in the UK through individuals\, organisations and political interventions. \nThis launch event will bring together three of the commissioned arts collectives Skin Deep\, Voices that Shake! and RECLAIM for a dynamic afternoon of performances\, film screenings\, artistic presentations\, panel discussions\, singing for justice and more. \nTickets \n£10 Full price / £6 Concessions \nWe have limited number of free access tickets available\, get in touch with us to find out more. \n*We call this the Black Cultural Activism Map to honour the legacies of political blackness from which we have grown. We wish to be inclusive of black\, brown and diasporic peoples. We recognise that our work is part of an ongoing conversation. \nBlack Cultural Activism Map has been supported with funding from Arts Council England and Unbound Philanthropy. This event is supported by Central Saint Martins\, University of the Arts London. \nArtists and contributors \nSkin Deep is a London-based multimedia platform that amplifies voices of colour through the discussion of race and culture\, inspiring much needed conversations around themes that are usually misrepresented or depoliticised by the mainstream media. Skin Deep’s multimedia project is based around a print publication\, live events and interactive digital exhibition that responds to the theme: MOVEMENT(S). Through original nonfiction\, fiction\, poetry\, artwork and illustration Skin Deep have invited their contributors to think about\, through and around the political journeys of black and brown activists. \nVoices that Shake! is a collective that brings together young people\, artists and campaigners to develop creative responses to social injustice. Using a model of personal transformation and structural change\, Shake! challenges established imbalanced power-bases and re-imagine new infrastructures in opposition to capitalism and colonialism. Shake! will deliver a multimedia performance showcase (musical oral history\, storytelling\, spoken word\, film\, soundscapes and visual collage) collaboratively devised between four artist facilitators from SHAKE!. Featured artists include Sai Murray\, Dhelia Snoussi\, Globe Poets and Nawi Collective. \nRECLAIM is a youth leadership and social change organisation. It was set up in Manchester in 2007 to identify and support young leaders from an intensely pressurised community. Their work allows young people to develop their skills and potential and to build their pathway to make the world a better place for all. Through their commission RECLAIM will unveil the hidden cultures in Manchester merging art\, politics and creativity and look at how linking these mediums can say so much about the world we live in today. They will revisit\, reimagine and revive stories of black and brown activism from the past – stories from the north that have shaped the lives of many in Manchester communities today.
