SUMMARY:Historic Homes of Hampstead Village Guided Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Since its development from a village to an 18th Century spa town and then a Victorian suburb\, Hampstead has retained its unspoilt Georgian charm with many listed townhouses and terraces. \nIn the 19th and 20th Centuries this made it very popular with artists\, intellectuals and creatives of all kinds and there are many stories of influential figures who are former residents who left their mark on the area. \nThis includes several generations of architects\, such as Norman Shaw\, Ewan Christian and Erno Goldfinger\, many of whom built their own homes there\, adding to its architectural variety. Furthermore\, in the 20th Century the area gained a reputation as the location of several modernist architects’ experimental housing projects for wealthy clients\, including Hopkins House and Maxwell Fry’s Sun House. \nJoin our knowledgeable guide on this walking tour to learn more about the people and buildings that have shaped Hampstead\, where you will be introduced to a selection of the area’s finest architects’ homes\, historic houses\, and modernist masterpieces.

SUMMARY:Portobello Film Festival 2026
DESCRIPTION:For more than three decades Portobello Film Festival has been celebrating independent film making and festival culture at the original epicentre of the British Underground. Free to enter and free to attend\, the festival is an annual reminder of a time when Ladbroke Grove was to London what San Francisco was to America. \nOne of this year’s highlights is a feature on Laura Del-Rivo\, Britain’s first female beatnik author whose debut novel provided the inspiration for Michael Winner’s West 11. Supplementing her income by trading on Portobello Road Market while continuing to write about the changing life of the neighbourhood\, she was affectionately known as “The Tights Lady”. \nA curated evening on 17 September is dedicated to Pink Floyd and to collective art-making. Original shorts from the late 60s are shown alongside a newly released documentary on The Exploding Galaxy\, a group of artists\, musicians\, poets and dancers with a shared creative spirit. \nOne Foot in the Grove revived the spirit of psychedelia\, punk and 80s graffiti with a spectacular display of murals\, giant sculptures and fire-breathing robots under the Westway in 2009. While most traces have long since disappeared\, a ceramic mural by Carrie Reichardt and the Treatment Rooms Collective remains as a permanent reminder. Members of the collective return with a group show at The Muse to run alongside Portobello Film Festival. The exhibition opening party on 10 September is accompanied by a screening of Vive Le Punk\, Danny Garcia’s documentary marking 50 years of punk by following four bands still active today. \nThe opening night at The Gate Picturehouse on 3 September is the only ticketed event. There is no need to book for more than 200 new films. Tomorrow’s cinema today – all free to attend!

SUMMARY:The Lure of... : September
DESCRIPTION:Join the team behind the independent investigative news outlet Byline Times for an entertaining evening of challenging discussion to help us understand the unprecedented times we are living in  – and why they are happening – with those with an inside track. \nThere’s no shortage of strong opinions in Britain today – what’s missing is good-faith debate. Too much of our national conversation has become performative. It seems designed to inflame rather than illuminate. \nThat’s why Byline Times launched our series of ‘Out of the Comfort Zone’ events at the Cockpit in 2025. These interactive discussions have sparked genuinely unexpected and illuminating moments. \nAt a time when many of Britain’s most powerful media proprietors remain distant and unseen\, Byline Times does the opposite: we step out from behind the editorial line and into the room. \nHosted by Byline Times Editor-in-Chief Hardeep Matharu and Co-Founder Peter Jukes\, plus a wide-ranging variety of guest authors\, campaigners and thought leaders. Previous guests have included: broadcaster and academic Bonnie Greer\, journalist and activist Femi Oluwole\, novelist Jake Arnott\, Camerados founder Maff Potts\, XR and Humanity Project co-founder Clare Farrell\, author and Women’s Equality Party co-founder Catherine Mayer\, Conservative commentator Albie Amankona\, investigative journalist and author Nafeez Ahmed\, Asylum Speakers founder Jaz O’Hara\, author and broadcaster John Sweeney and many many more… \nIn addition to current affairs\, there’s also laughter\, readings\, music\, poetry – there’s even been dancing and a good old sing song round the old Joanna – every night is different! \n  \nGet your tickets HERE

SUMMARY:MARISA ANDERSON + LUCE MAWDLSEY - London Concert
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nMARISA ANDERSON\nLUCE MAWDLSEY\nFriday 4 September\nChats Palace\, 42-44 Brooksby’s Walk\, London\, E9 6DF\n7.30pm | £16 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/jf9efbbf668f \nMARISA ANDERSON channels the history of the guitar and stretches the boundaries of tradition. Her playing is fluid\, emotional\, and masterful\, featuring compositions and improvisations that re-imagine the landscape of American music.  The New Yorker calls Anderson ‘one of the most distinctive guitar players of her generation’\, and NPR refers to her as among ‘this era’s most powerful players’. Her music has been featured in Rolling Stone\, NPR\, The New York Times\, Pitchfork\, the BBC and The Wire. Festival appearances include Big Ears\, Pitchfork Midwinter\, Le Guess Who and the Copenhagen Jazz Festival. \nIn addition to her solo work\, Anderson is sought after as a collaborator and composer. Swallowtail\, her second record in duo with drummer Jim White\, was released in May 2024 on Thrill Jockey Records. 2024 also saw the release of the feature film score ‘ A Perfect Day For Caribou’\, as well as appearances on records by Charlie Parr\, Myriam Gendron and Big|Brave. In addition to multiple solo releases\, past projects include 2021’s Lost Futures with guitarist William Tyler\, and contributions to recordings by Matmos\, Tara Jane O’Neil\, Beth Ditto\, Sharon Van Etten and Circuit Des Yeux. Anderson’s new album\, ‘The Anthology of UnAmerican Folk Music’ (out now on Thrill Jockey)\, is a collection of songs culled from the private record collection of the late Harry Smith. Assembled by Anderson after a chance encounter led to an opportunity to study and explore this treasure trove of music\, the Anthology focuses on music from places that the United States has been in conflict with since 1970: Southeast Asia\, the USSR and the Arabic and Islamic regions of the world.\nhttps://marisaanderson.bandcamp.com/ \nLUCE MAWDSLEY specialises in expansively cinematic instrumentals conjuring queer cowboy landscapes via the Northern English coastline. Luce Mawdsley is an autistic nonbinary composer and multiinstrumentalist based in Liverpool with a practice rooted in progressive experimentation. Drawing from a range of poetic art forms\, mythologies\, and landscapes\, their work uses personal experience of neurodivergence\, mental health disorders\, and queerness as a ligature from which to generate subversive explorations of gender\, place\, and identity formation. \nhttps://www.lucemawdsleymusic.com/ \n  \nBook Live Bands for Events in London

SUMMARY:AI and the Enshittification of the Media
DESCRIPTION:What’s gone wrong with the media? We’ve seen decades of decline and collapse as business models make millions for shareholders based on recurring cuts and downgraded quality. \nContent suffers as quality journalism is replaced by churnalism and clickbait. And we are now increasingly seeing AI content threatening to replace the work of human journalists. \nThe NUJ London digital media branch has organised an evening of discussion about the problems facing the media and journalism\, led by Cory Doctorow. \nCory will discuss the issues in his recent non-fiction books: \n\nThe Reverse Centaur’s Guide to Life after AI (June 2026): A provocative guide to what’s good\, bad\, and (profoundly) stupid about AI.\nEnshittification: Why Everything Suddenly Got Worse and What to Do About It (Oct 2025): How misogyny\, conspiratorialism\, surveillance\, manipulation\, fraud and AI slop are drowning the internet.\n\nCory will also be joined by journalists who have been victims of the decaying media\, recently made redundant as their skills are no longer required by the business to discuss what’s gone wrong.

SUMMARY:British Youth Music Theatre - Frankenstein
DESCRIPTION:Fear spreads fast\, but judgment builds terrifying momentum. \nThis visceral new musical adaptation of Frankenstein rips into society’s gaze: how do we decide who is dangerous\, who is worthy\, and who is denied humanity altogether? Fast‑paced and drenched in tension\, it hurtles through a world where snap judgements turn lethal and rejection becomes a force of its own. \nPerformed by a ferocious cast of young performers\, this production never slows to catch its breath. Scenes snap by with cinematic intensity\, driven by an urgent\, propulsive score\, sharp jump scares and bold theatrical set pieces that keep audiences on edge. \nWritten by Victoria Gimby (Writer)\, Jimmy Jewell (Composer) and Nick Stimson (Lyricist)\, this adaptation exposes the violence of judgment itself. \nRelentless and unsettling\, Frankenstein is a gripping theatrical experience that leaves no room to look away.

SUMMARY:Dysmas Orbis — Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join published and exhibited London artist and author Robert John for the launch of Dysmas Orbis\, a speculative urban fantasy set within a hidden parallel London. \nRobert John has spent years creating a surreal visual version of London through his photographic and digital art practice. His work has been exhibited and published\, including LDN Reimagined\, a traditionally published art book with Unicorn Publishing Group. Dysmas Orbis is the literary continuation of that visual world — taking the surreal London he created through images and developing it into a five-book speculative fiction series. \nThe novel explores identity\, belonging\, relationships\, displacement and what it means to be seen\, drawing on Robert’s own experiences of growing up in South London and his father’s battle with Parkinson’s disease and dementia. \nExpect a London that is recognisable but not quite right — spider trees\, flower lamps\, giant machines\, secret societies and a hidden world existing alongside our own. \nThe launch will include a Q & A\, reading from the novel and a look behind the creation of the book and its visual world. Guests will receive a complimentary drink on arrival and a free special edition A5 art print with every signed first edition of Dysmas Orbis purchased on the night. \nEarly praise for Dysmas Orbis\n\n“His London is animate\, alarming\, astonishing.”— Iain Sinclair \n\n\n“Gripping and assured… Richly and beautifully written\, Dysmas Orbis is a tender story that will keep you turning the pages and stay with you long after the last page.”— Ivy Ngeow\, award-winning author \n\n\n“A brooding tale of fissured reality where freedom is swallowed whole.”— Sudhana Singh\, award-winning memoirist & journalist \n\n\n“Prepare to step into a gritty and mythical version of London\, with secret societies and spider trees. Robert John has created an alternate London that feels both familiar and fantastical.”— Tabish Khan\, art critic for Londonist

SUMMARY:London Loo Tour
