SUMMARY:Dysmas Orbis — Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join published and exhibited London artist and author Robert John for the launch of Dysmas Orbis\, a speculative urban fantasy set within a hidden parallel London. \nRobert John has spent years creating a surreal visual version of London through his photographic and digital art practice. His work has been exhibited and published\, including LDN Reimagined\, a traditionally published art book with Unicorn Publishing Group. Dysmas Orbis is the literary continuation of that visual world — taking the surreal London he created through images and developing it into a five-book speculative fiction series. \nThe novel explores identity\, belonging\, relationships\, displacement and what it means to be seen\, drawing on Robert’s own experiences of growing up in South London and his father’s battle with Parkinson’s disease and dementia. \nExpect a London that is recognisable but not quite right — spider trees\, flower lamps\, giant machines\, secret societies and a hidden world existing alongside our own. \nThe launch will include a Q & A\, reading from the novel and a look behind the creation of the book and its visual world. Guests will receive a complimentary drink on arrival and a free special edition A5 art print with every signed first edition of Dysmas Orbis purchased on the night. \nEarly praise for Dysmas Orbis\n\n“His London is animate\, alarming\, astonishing.”— Iain Sinclair \n\n\n“Gripping and assured… Richly and beautifully written\, Dysmas Orbis is a tender story that will keep you turning the pages and stay with you long after the last page.”— Ivy Ngeow\, award-winning author \n\n\n“A brooding tale of fissured reality where freedom is swallowed whole.”— Sudhana Singh\, award-winning memoirist & journalist \n\n\n“Prepare to step into a gritty and mythical version of London\, with secret societies and spider trees. Robert John has created an alternate London that feels both familiar and fantastical.”— Tabish Khan\, art critic for Londonist

SUMMARY:The Fourth London International Chinese Music Festival (LICMF) - Concerts\, Workshops & Classes
DESCRIPTION:The 4th London International Chinese Music Festival\, jointly initiated by institutions including SOAS\, University of London\, opened grandly in the summer of 2026. The festival once again presents new chapters in contemporary Chinese music while exploring East–West cultural intersections through different qualities\, textures\, ranges\, and sound stages\, creating new interpretations of tradition. \nThe “symphonization” of contemporary Chinese music does not simply mean allowing Chinese instruments to disappear into a Western orchestra. Rather\, it takes the distinctive “qi-yun” (氣韻)\, along with the depth and clarity found in Chinese instrumental music\, as its spiritual core and uses them to construct an overall musical narrative. The clearly articulated\, continuous notes of the piano\, combined with the resonant voice of the cello\, become a vast sonic landscape against which the bony percussive force of the guzheng\, the vigorous tremolo of the pipa\, and the ethereal tonal qualities of the dizi and xiao are brought into relief. \nThe tonal lines and aesthetics of Eastern instruments merge with Western polyphonic counterpoint. Traditional Chinese music is thus transformed from individual points of emotional expression into musical brushstrokes\, forming an aesthetic imagery of clouds and water. \nThis year’s festival embraces the same philosophy\, bringing together internationally acclaimed performers and emerging musicians. From traditional instruments such as the guqin and pipa to cross-cultural ensembles that blend Eastern and Western musical traditions\, the festival showcases the remarkable contemporary vitality of Chinese music. Audiences are invited to experience live the magnificent musical chapters created by interweaving traditional Chinese music with contemporary musical language. \nThe festival features a strong line-up\, with 18 performing musicians—including 15 core UK-based musicians and scholars and three internationally invited musicians—along with two prominent interdisciplinary collaborators/composers\, several ensembles\, and prize-winning competition students. Of particular note is the 27 August performance\, featuring works by Professors Michael Ellison and Ray Lin and presenting the cross-cultural collaboration Ensemble Shuimo (水墨). Both professors serve as composers and mentors\, offering audiences an exceptional encounter between Eastern and Western musical cultures. \nThe Chinese traditional instruments featured in the concerts include plucked\, bowed\, wind\, and percussion instruments: the guqin (seven-stringed zither)\, guzheng (plucked zither)\, pipa (four-stringed lute)\, zhongruan (moon-shaped lute)\, sanxian (three-stringed lute)\, erhu (two-stringed fiddle)\, dizi (bamboo transverse flute)\, xiao (end-blown bamboo flute)\, xun (Chinese vessel flute)\, and Chinese folk percussion. The Western instruments used in the East–West cross-cultural ensemble on 27 August are piano and cello. \nZhu Xizhe and the World Premiere of Nān \nAt the 2026 4th London International Chinese Music Festival\, young guzheng performer Xizhe Zhu has been invited as a special guest artist. Together with erhu performer Huang Ziyang and other musicians\, she will give the world premiere of Nān (囡)\, a new work composed by He Qianqian. \nInspired by a Shanghai nursery rhyme from the Jiangnan region\, the work builds on traditional Chinese tonal aesthetics while innovatively juxtaposing the plucked texture of the guzheng\, the bowed lines of the erhu\, and the deep timbre of the Western bassoon. Through contemporary extended techniques on the guzheng and the interplay of the three instruments\, the music layers two overlapping images of memory: the carefree innocence of children chasing and playing\, and the distant\, affectionate calls of elders echoing through time. Its playful and agile melodies reveal a highly reflective musical dialogue between East and West. \nA graduate of the Philosophy\, Politics and Economics (PPE) programme at the University of Warwick\, Zhu Xizhe received rigorous musical training within the Shanghai Conservatory of Music system from an early age. At fourteen\, she passed the highest level of its examination system and subsequently obtained the professional Performance Grade II certification. Her performing experience includes serving as principal soloist in a concerto at the Shanghai Oriental Art Centre and winning gold awards at international competitions. Her interdisciplinary background allows her performances to transcend technical display. In Nān\, she precisely employs the guzheng’s clear\, crisp plucking; graceful\, fluid glissandi; and powerful\, full-bodied sweeping tremolo techniques\, transforming the gentle memories of Jiangnan culture into a contemporary sonic aesthetic characterised by visual vividness and openness. \nAs the timbres of diverse instruments pass and transform their individual lines through the performance space\, they also reflect the continuing development of traditional Chinese music in the contemporary world\, exploring cultural boundaries and deeper forms of resonance. From the subtle breathing and exhalation of individual instruments to the vast echoes of polyphonic ensemble playing\, contemporary Chinese music takes on a clear\, luminous presence\, gently unfolding in the London summer a cultural collision of a new era. Every listener who loves music and culture is invited to attend and witness a dialogue and resonance that transcends both time and geography. \nPerformance & Festival Information \nFestival: The Fourth London International Chinese Music Festival 2026\nDates: 24–28 August 2026\nOrganisers: China Arts (UK)\, SOAS\, University of London\, Chinese National Orchestra Society (CNOS)\, and London Youlan Qin Society. \nSound of Nature Concert\n26 August 2026\, 19:00\nKamran Djam Lecture Theatre\, SOAS\, University of London\n10 Thornhaugh St\, London WC1H 0XG\nFocus: the beauty of traditional Chinese instruments and performances of music associated with intangible cultural heritage. \nGala Concert – Sound of East in the West\n27 August 2026\, 19:00–21:30\nHoly Sepulchre London\nHolborn Viaduct\, London EC1A 2DQ\nFeatured cross-cultural programme: Silk String Quartet\, Siji Quartet\, and Ensemble Shuimo\, the contemporary East Asian ensemble directed by Professor Michael Ellison\, performing cross-cultural works by Ray Lin and Michael Ellison. \nShowcase Concert\n28 August 2026\, 19:00–21:30\nKamran Djam Lecture Theatre\, SOAS\, University of London\nFeaturing prize-winning competition participants\, outstanding young performers\, and professional musicians performing together. \n  \nOfficial website and ticket information:   \nukchinesemusic.org/london-international-chinese-music-festival-2026. \nWritten by critic Hu Jungyi. \n  \nHire London’s Chinese Musicians for Chinese Themed Corporate Events and Chinese New Year Celebrations in London \n

SUMMARY:EARTHBALL + CLASSIC FORM MORF (Charles Hayward & Nathan Greywater)
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nEARTHBALL\nCLASSIC FORM MORF (Charles Hayward & Nathan Greywater)\nTuesday 25 August\nThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB\n7.30pm | £13 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/Y653a0c64eb6 \nEARTHBALL are an avant/noise/rock wrecking ball of a band from Nanaimo\, Canada. Rooted in total improvisation\, free expression\, and a deeply psychedelic sensibility\, EarthBall operate on pure instinct. They hurtle onwards in a combustion of spontaneous composition\, shooting from the hip\, as they fall out of the sky ablaze. The group encompass Isabel Ford (vocals\, bass)\, John Brennan (drums\, percussion)\, Jeremy Van Wyke (vocals\, guitar\, trumpet)\, Kellan Maclaughlin (guitar\, talkbox)\, and Liam Murphy (saxophone). Each member brings a rich and varied musical history\, with past and present projects including Shearing Pinx\, Plan Your Future\, Kamikaze Nurse\, Eschatons\, and Psychedelic Dirt. Collectively and individually\, they have collaborated with artists such as Deerhoof\, Raven Chacon\, Chris Corsano\, and William Hooker\, deepening the band’s exploratory reach and collective language. \nSince forming in 2019\, EarthBall have released six cassettes and three fervently received LPs on Upset The Rhythm\, including November’s widely acclaimed Outside Over There. Their latest release\, Actual Earth Music – Volume 3 & 4 (out June 26th)\, follows the first instalment in the series and captures two mind-quaking highlights from last winter’s European tour. This is EarthBall plunging to full fathom five\, transforming into something rich and strange – channeling the fleeting moment as it fractures\, erupts\, and dissolves into the unknown. Actual Earth Music – Volume 3 & 4 marks another ascent in EarthBall’s ever-expanding\, totemic discography\, an ecstatic storm of raw immediacy and unfiltered expression. EarthBall came\, conjured and opened the portal! Blink and it’s gone. What was that? Actual Earth Music! \nhttps://upsettherhythm.bandcamp.com/album/outside-over-there \nCLASSIC FORM MORF is an experimental duo featuring avant-garde drumming legend Charles Hayward\, electric bassist/sound artist Nathan Greywater and two radios. The project specialises in wild\, improvised live sets where the duo plays alongside and against live broadcasts from classical music and talk radio stations. Charles Hayward is a founding member of the experimental rock groups This Heat and Camberwell Now. Since the late 80’s he has concentrated on solo projects and collaborations including Massacre (with Bill Laswell and Fred Frith)\, Monkey Puzzle Trio\, Albert Newton (with Pat Thomas and John Edwards) and This Is Not This Heat which toured the UK\, Europe\, USA and Japan between 2016-2019 performing expanded versions of This Heat’s oeuvre to unfaltering critical acclaim. Hayward’s latest group\, Abstract Concrete\, formed from London players from a diversity of European underground scenes\, released its self-titled debut album in November 2023. Nathan Greywater has been on the London experimental and improv scene for over a decade now\, initially as an electronic musician with Harmergeddon\, and more recently focussing on electric bass. He currently runs the free-improv open mic night\, Skronk as well as playing in Joe Plastic and engineering for acts such as Abstract Concrete\,Jaw Harp and Meat Strap. \nhttps://linktr.ee/charleshayward

SUMMARY:Journey to Nutopia: People’s Emergency Briefing – Climate Action Special
DESCRIPTION:Journey to Nutopia returns for a one-off screening and panel. \nA lot’s happened since we launched Journey to Nutopia back in 2018. Our founding motto – ‘refuting the inevitability of global dystopia’ isn’t getting any easier\, but that’s all the more reason to look for the places in our doom-flooded news environment where The Work is happening – especially around the climate crisis. \nThe first Journey to Nutopia was a three-day programme of talks\, spoken word and acid house music as part of Birmingham’s Lunar Festival in 2018. Authors\, activists\, artists\, academics\, psychedelic researchers\, poets and acid house DJs came together to boost ‘positive future narratives that refute the inevitability of a global dystopia’. It was a celebration of the DIY aesthetic\, connectivity\, community\, touching grass\, joy as resistance – all that good stuff which we will need to draw on as our weather\, our politics\, and our shared ‘reality’ becomes fractured\, wilder and more unpredictable. \nWe are taking part in the countrywide screening initiative for the People’s Emergency Briefing documentary – a film that lays out the facts of Where We Are\, but also the next steps we can take together to get our governments to grasp this crispy old nettle and bring more urgency to mitigating the incoming mass extinction event of our age. The briefing is currently being shown all across the UK – from church halls to trade union meetings. It brings together the science and national implications in one compelling film\, designed for communities to watch together with their MP and other local decision makers to see the same evidence – on the record – as those briefed in Westminster. The film will be followed by what we are pretty confident will be a lively panel discussion about what WE can do beyond the Bag-for-Life of it all\, to be part of the solution/surviving what comes next and not just hopeless witnesses to the distraction and destruction of the natural world happening on our screens and increasingly in our lived experience. \nConfirmed panel guests include: \nDeborah Curtis – The Great Imagining\nSarah Corbett – The Craftivist Collective\nJami – London School of Solar Punk \nThere’s no time to waste. As the film shows\, we have made some progress since the XR protests and Net Zero promises but we need to accelarate not take our foot off the proverbial gas. It’s time to come together\, raise our voices and demand our governments take the kind of bold action required to make lasting change. But it’s not just about them; it’s also about us! It’s also time to bring a bit of 21st century\, solar punk\, craftivist\, DIY\, Make it Make Sense energy into proceedings… \nJoin us! \nCo-hosted by Richard Norris & Michelle Olley. \nDate: Sunday 24th August\, 7pm – Live at The Cockpit\nTickets: Pay what you can – £3 / £5 / £10\nWebsite: https://www.thecockpit.org.uk/show/journey_to_nutopia_3

SUMMARY:Music Hath No Borders - South African Buskaid Ensemble in Concert - 21.08.26
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a magical fundraising concert with ten members of the internationally renowned South African Buskaid Ensemble – a performance of live classical music from Handel and Elgar to township Kwela music. \nThis is a poignant venue for Buskaid: Buskaid’s Founder\, Rosemary Nalden\, is the daughter of the late Charles Nalden CBE\, one of Coram’s most distinguished foundlings. The Buskaid musicians are themselves no strangers to hardship: like Coram\, Buskaid offers transformative opportunities for less advantaged young people. \nFor this musical celebration\, Rosemary has chosen music to link both charities\, including the Chaconne from Terpsichore by Handel\, Coram’s most famous benefactor\, and Elgar’s Sospiri\, honouring Rosemary’s father\, an accomplished harpist who loved the music of Edward Elgar. The concert will end with a rousing burst of township ‘Kwela’ music\, arranged by the Buskaid musicians themselves. \nTickets and Timings \nTickets can be booked on Eventbrite. \nAll tickets include a welcome drink\, and private access to the Foundling Museum‘s exhibition\, including the special exhibition display\, 300 Years of the ‘Rival Queens’: Handel’s 1726 Opera Season. \n6 pm: Access to the Foundling Museum for all guests. \n7 pm-9 pm: Concert with interval. \nAbout Buskaid \nThe Buskaid Music School was founded by Rosemary Nalden in 1997 in response to requests from the less privileged local community in Diepkloof Soweto. At its inception\, it comprised just 15 children; its current membership stands at 82. To meet this demand\, in 2002 Buskaid initiated a teacher-training course for all its students; all the musicians playing tonight are employed by Buskaid as highly-skilled string teachers. \nThe Buskaid Ensemble is world-renowned for its high-performance standards and its innate grasp of musical style\, and as a result\, has undertaken 28 international tours to Europe and the Americas. It is the only African orchestra to have performed at the BBC Proms. \nThe Ensemble has collaborated with many distinguished artists such as Sir John Eliot Gardiner\, Melvyn Tan\, Steven Isserlis and Karl Jenkins. It has performed in the presence of numerous dignitaries\, notably the late Nelson Mandela\, Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II\, King Charles III\, and Michelle Obama. \nProgramme \nJean-Philippe Rameau – Air pour les Guerriers; Entrée De Polymnie; Contredanses I & II \nHenry Purcell – Fairest Isle; Rondeau; If Love’s a Sweet Passion; Chaconne \nEdward Elgar – Sospiri (Sighs) \nJean Sibelius – Impromptu \nGeorge Frideric Handel – Terpsichore HWV 8b: Chacconne \nKwela\, Afro-jazz and Afro-pop (Arr. Buskaid musicians) \nBook Classical String Ensembles for Events in the UK via Music for London.

SUMMARY:Thieves in Satin - Londons Queens of Crime
DESCRIPTION:Step into the dazzling yet dangerous world of “THIEVES IN SATIN”\, the electrifying new production from Moving Stories Dance Company. Inspired by the infamous all-female UK crime syndicate\, The Forty Elephants\, this breathtaking dance spectacle unravels the story of Diamond Alice\, The Bobbed Hair Bandit\, and Baby-Faced Maggie—women who stole more than just riches; they stole the spotlight. \nBorn in the shadows of a Lambeth workhouse\, Alice Diamond had no choice but to fight for survival. A master thief by her teens\, she rose to power as the formidable Queen of the Forty Elephants\, leading a gang of fearless women who lived by their own rules. The company makes it’s exciting debut at The Cockpit.  Featuring an ensemble of ballet\, contemporary\, and West End performers\, the company is known for blending gripping storytelling with dynamic choreography. \nTHIEVES IN SATIN is a thrilling fusion of elegance and danger\, a celebration of rebellion and resilience. SUMMARY:Unwriting the Artist’s Statement | Online Workshop with Elle Reynolds
DESCRIPTION:‘Unwriting the Artist’s Statement’ is a focused\, playful online workshop centred on conversation\, making\, and discovering your own voice. \nThe session invites you to abscond from International Art English and respond directly to your work. Moving away from the critical language often used to address contemporary art\, the workshop proposes different protocols for speaking about your practice to the world.  \nThrough a series of guided prompts\, improvisation\, and gentle exercises\, participants will work with revision\, association\, and a deliberate quality of randomness to develop ways of using their own voice. The focus is on speaking through the work rather than separating language from practice. \nThe workshop is hosted by IMT Gallery and led by artist and educator Elle Reynolds\, whose practice works through collaborative processes\, storytelling\, and material experimentation. \nFor makers\, artists\, writers\, anti-writers\, poets\, curators at any stage of their practice\, and anyone interested in finding alternative ways to speak about their work. It is especially useful if you are preparing portfolios\, applications\, or exhibitions\, or if you simply want your language to feel more natural and connected to what you do. \nPlaces are limited — the workshop takes place on Sunday 16 August\, 3-5pm (BST). \nFollow the link below to learn more and book. \nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/guest-house-unwriting-the-artists-statement-online-workshop-tickets-1992700479777

SUMMARY:Set Menu - London Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Friday night. Food is ready\, drinks are cold\, cutlery is set. Max is primed to throw the perfect dinner party. Nothing but perfection will do; nothing else has worked. After a hundred attempts\, he knows exactly what to do and say. \nHours later\, the guests leave satisfied\, as Max waits for the clock to set him free. This time for sure\, he’s earned a tomorrow. Set Menu begins 600 days later. Max has failed to escape so many times that he’s lost all sense of time and himself. \nThe clock resets\, the guests forget\, and he begins again. \nOne particularly awful night\, he decides to reset the night early. When he wakes to try again\, something’s different. He’s lost a pen. The plan? Simple. Chaos. He’s going to beat whatever is keeping him trapped by making the worst dinner party ever. With exceptional knowledge of the house’s contents and the guests’ psyches\, he’ll take on the role of a twisted puppeteer. The food is burnt\, the drinks are spiked\, the cutlery is sharpened. \nAs anarchy reaches its peak\, Max is confronted with a terrifying truth: one guest was never supposed to be there. And knows more than they let on.

SUMMARY:Nature Morte: The Extermination of Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:Nature Morte: The Extermination of Ukraine is the result of extensive research by British artist Piers Secunda. \nApproaching the deliberate destruction of cultural history and national identity through the depiction of traditional Ukrainian dishes and their ingredients\, at first sight Nature Morte is an exhibition of still lifes. Based on photographs taken by Secunda during visits to Ukraine in 2024 and 2026\, the paintings were made with ink he produced from charcoal gathered in Kharviv\, the site of the first Ukrainian Government building destroyed by Russia’s invasion in 2022. \nArranged as pyramids to reflect the power structures behind the kidnapping and forced military training of Ukranian children\, and the hierarchies behind the targeted bombing and systematic looting of cultural artefacts\, the paintings act as portals to an archive of evidence. Reached via QR codes\, the names and faces of the perpetrators are presented alongside extensive supporting material. \nThe exhibition is complemented by a map of more than five thousand points of damage to cultural sites recorded across Ukraine\, and a 40-minute documentary by Secunda’s long-term collaborator David Miller. \n  \nFor more details\, click HERE
