SUMMARY:Gathering Wands: Walk and Carving Workshop with Harri Harrison
DESCRIPTION:Centred on Harri Harrison’s sculptural Wands series in the group exhibition The House at IMT Gallery\, this workshop invites a shared evening of wandering\, foraging and making. \nThe workshop begins with a twilight walk through Victoria Park\, led by multimedia artist Harri Harrison. Moving along desire paths\, the group will allow themselves to wander off the obvious routes\, gathering found natural materials along the way. These paths offer a subtle\, gentle form of resistance\, a space for slower attention and observation. \nReturning to IMT Gallery\, we will gather our foraged materials and create our own wands using a combination of carving and binding techniques. The session concludes with a guided meditation and meditative drawing exercise. Together we will explore what it means to hold found natural materials\, noticing how our focus shifts between objects\, ourselves\, and the connections they hold.  \nNo previous experience needed\, and natural materials and tools will be provided. Feel free to bring your preferred drawing materials and any found items you would like to work with\, such as stones\, sticks\, shells\, dried flowers\, wood\, or string for binding. Please wear suitable footwear and clothing for walking\, as paths may be slightly muddy. If you have any questions or specific access needs\, please feel free to get in touch. \nAbout Harri Harrison: \nHarri Harrison is a multimedia artist whose practice integrates performance\, text-based projections\, plant-based work\, and alternative photography processes\, engaging directly with urban environments. Harri explores notions of place\, community\, grief\, gratitude\, and belonging\, inviting us to reconsider our relationship to nature and future communities.  \nHarri has over 13 years of experience leading creative workshops\, collaborating with institutions such as Cubitt Gallery\, PEER Gallery\, and Phytology at Bethnal Green Nature Reserve. \nGathering Wands is open to all — wanderers\, makers\, quiet explorers\, and anyone curious to slow down\, attend to the everyday\, hold attention\, and reflect through making.  \nSpaces are limited. Reserve your place for an evening of quiet attention.

SUMMARY:Desire to Create: Baťa's Architecture of Belonging
DESCRIPTION:The Czech Centre London\, in collaboration with the Tomáš Baťa Foundation and the Bata Heritage Centre\, marks the 150th anniversary of Czech entrepreneur Tomáš Baťa\, founder of the global Baťa Shoe Company\, with an exhibition exploring his achievements\, guiding principles\, and their realisation in East Tilbury. It reveals how ideas about work\, culture\, sport\, health and community were embedded in the design of the built environment. \nThe exhibition unfolds in two complementary strands. Desire to Create presents Baťa’s legacy as a comprehensive philosophy\, uniting work with service\, enterprise with education\, and personal development with responsibility towards others – not as a relic of the past\, but as a continuing source of inspiration. Baťa’s Architecture of Belonging brings East Tilbury to life through architectural drawings\, historic photographs and original artefacts\, evoking its distinctive modernist atmosphere. Together\, they trace how ideas were translated into built form – from vision to planning\, from planning to everyday life – creating a cohesive narrative of belonging\, work and community. \nOrganised by the Czech Centre London in partnership with the Bata Heritage Centre. \n\nEXHIBITION OPENING\nThursday 9 April 2026\, 6.30 – 8.30 pm\nFree entry\, Register Here\nEXHIBITION DATES: 10 April – 12 June 2026\nVENUE & OPENING TIMES\nVitrínka Gallery\, Czech Centre London\n30 Kensington Palace Gardens\, London\, W8 4QY\nOpening hours: Tue – Fri 10 am – 5 pm

SUMMARY:Summits\, Science and Survival
DESCRIPTION:The mountains are changing around us. Glacier loss and increasing instability are making the work of exploratory mountaineers ever more hazardous and difficult\, but the challenges are no less acute for those living in the valleys beneath these crumbling giants. \nThis year’s Mount Everest Foundation lecture asks what the future holds for mountaineers and mountain communities\, drawing on the experiences of young alpinists and pioneering mountain scientists. \nGeorge Ponsonby and James Price’s ascent of Aikache Chhok (6673m) in Pakistan was hailed as one of the most impressive mountaineering achievements of 2025\, a daring climb that pushed the pair to the limit over nine days on the mountain. As two climbers at the very start of their careers\, they exemplify how a new generation is choosing to approach high altitude climbing. \nJoining them on stage will be Professor Rachel Carr and Sonam Rinzin who will present their groundbreaking research on glacial lake outburst floods and the growing risks they pose to mountain communities. Drawing on their work in Bhutan\, the pair will explain how remote villages might adapt to this growing threat. \nJoin us for an evening of inspiration and insight\, pulled direct from the frontlines of mountain exploration.

SUMMARY:At the Edge of All Things
DESCRIPTION:At the Edge of All Things brings together three artists who conjure post-human landscapes in response to the uncertainties and frailties of contemporary life. The exhibition marks the start of a three-month series of events at a former warehouse in Borough as the building is prepared for its next chapter – the space itself a symbol of civic transition. \nAnna Woodward\, Annie Trevorah and Vilte Fuller provoke alternative futures in a world teetering on the brink of collapse. Examining the interconnectedness of humanity and the natural world from cultural and historical\, theoretical and personal perspectives the artists’ works capture a liminal moment between utopia and dystopia. \nIn her intricate paintings Anna Woodward’s depicts fantastical scenarios where the organic and human-made collide\, Annie Trevorah’s hybrid sculptures blur the lines between plant life and technology\, while Vite Fuller’s otherworldly scenes draw on ancient folktales and urban myths. Together they join nature’s alarm call to step back from the edge. \nThis inaugural show launches a creative hub hosted by IAG (Independent Art Galleries and Exhibitions) led by curator Josephine May Bailey. Over the course of three months\, the temporarily vacant space will act as a platform for dialogue\, experimentation and exchange by incorporating exhibitions\, artist residencies and collaborative programming.

SUMMARY:British Institute of Energy Economics Research Conference 2025
DESCRIPTION:Accelerating the whole energy system transition in a fractured world – Tuesday 23 and Wednesday 24 September 2025\, Worcester College Oxford. \nThe BIEE is delighted to be holding its next Research Conference at Worcester College in Oxford\, Tuesday 23 and Wednesday 24 September 2025.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAccelerating the whole energy system transition in a fractured world\nConference website: www.biee.org/conference/research-conference-2025 \nWhilst there has been positive progress to celebrate\, there remains much more to be decided and done to transition the whole energy system successfully to be low-carbon. \nThe issues involved impact the entire energy system (not only electricity)\, and there is a need to draw on a wide range of domestic and international perspectives in this changed global and UK context for net zero. \nDo countries need to increase delivery pace to meet 2030 aims? Has success been made more complex in a fractured world? What is the role and value of energy in systems and for communities and people? What influence do market design\, system considerations\, legacy and finance have in the transition? \nBIEE’s biennial Research Conference offers an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of current work on these issues\, hear from experts and join the debate on pathways for the future. SUMMARY:Voices from the Amazon: our stories\, our solutions
DESCRIPTION:Voices from the Amazon: our stories\, our solutions \nCasa Kayeb was designed by Amazonians to uplift Amazonian voices during the London Action Climate Week (LACW). \nWe have invited Amazonian voices from different parts of the region to talk about their views ahead of COP30\, which will take place in November in Belem. \nIt’s an opportunity for international audiences to listen to the perspectives of those directly impacted by the climate emergency\, who are developing technologies in their territories to postpone the end of the world and protect the future of the Amazon region. \nWe are delivering this event with COP 30 Committee\, a coalition created by Amazonian organisations that aims to expand and strengthen advocacy in local\, national and international climate conferences and forums. It aims to secure greater commitment from governments for the demands of those from\, living\, and working\, in the Amazon territory. \nCome join us at Rich Mix for an inspiring event featuring stories and solutions from the Amazon. Hear firsthand accounts from indigenous communities and environmental activists working to protect this vital ecosystem. Learn about sustainable practices and initiatives making a difference in the region. Connect with like-minded individuals and be part of the conversation on how we can support Amazonian people to protect the forest. Don’t miss this opportunity to be part of the change! \nRefreshments (coffee and tea) will be provided from 9.30am to 5pm. \nThis event is only possible due to the collaboration of key organisations that believe in our work to uplift the voices of individuals and organisations from the Amazon region. A special thanks to The Bureau of Investigative Journalism (TBIJ)\, the Latin-American Bureau (LAB)\, and the COP30 Committee. \nPlease follow @kayeb_amazonia to keep informed of our events and discussions.

SUMMARY:South West Marine Fest Conference 2025
DESCRIPTION:Agenda \nSurfing identities in Newquay – evolutions and contemporary trajectories\n\n\nDr Marie Hale & Rachael Taylor\n\n\n\nThis presentation explores the evolving identity and environmental consciousness of Newquay’s surfing community\, examining surfers’ deepening ethical and spiritual connections with the ocean. Using Newquay as a case study\, researchers analyze how local surfers’ identities reflect a blend of tradition and modern environmental awareness\, influenced by a romantic view of nature and the ocean as blurred spaces between culture and nature. Guided by Bryce et al.’s framework—place-based identity\, experiences\, and capabilities—the study focuses on the surfers’ sense of belonging\, responsibility toward the ocean\, and their embodied environmental actions. The research also considers the possibility of a World Surfing Reserve to protect the surf experience and its socio-economic and ecological contributions. Using the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a lens\, the study aims to understand how Newquay’s surf culture intersects with broader environmental and social sustainability issues.\n\n\nAK Wildlife Cruises: Education\, Conservation\, Protection\n\n\nCam Molland\n\n\n\nAK Wildlife Cruises splits our goals into three key areas: education\, conservation and protection. Education through our wildlife-watching trips\, conservation by encouraging people to act\, and protection through the strategic deployment of the scientific data we collect. One thing that makes us fairly unique is that we combine guest experience with scientific research. Our boat (R/V Spirit of Our Seas) is a registered research and marine survey vessel and\, as we like to say\, we record everything from bumblebees to blue whales! When guests step aboard\, they become citizen scientists for the day\, and just be being there to help us collect vital data. We have been collecting cetacean sightings and occurrence data for 26 years\, giving us one of the longest boat-based survey datasets of this kind in the UK!\n\n\n\nAdvancing shark conservation through medical training and feeding-time\n\n\nMargot Morel1\n\n\n\nAbstract: In zoo settings\, routine veterinary care of sharks poses unique challenges due to their large size\, aquatic environment\, and natural aversion to handling. This presentation describes a conditioning program implemented at Budapest Zoo to train various shark species for essential medical procedures using feeding times as an opportunity for positive reinforcement. The primary objective was to reduce stress and improve compliance during medical interventions\, allowing for non-invasive health assessments\, wound care\, and therapeutic administration without the need for capture. Sharks were trained using a target-based system\, responding to specific cues that encouraged controlled movement and positioning. Over a six-month period\, sharks demonstrated increased tolerance to proximity and handling by trained staff\, enabling safer interactions and more frequent health checks. This program underscores the efficacy of behavioural training in enhancing shark welfare and care efficiency.\n\n\n\nIntro to Fathom Free and Ghost Gear\n\n\nLuke Bullus\n\n\n\nLuke is the Diving Officer and a trustee of the marine conservation charity Fathoms Free. Passionate about the marine environment\, Luke dedicates most of his free time to ghost gear recovery operations and ocean conservation. Fathoms Free is a group of experienced volunteer divers\, and skippers committed to protecting marine wildlife and the environment. They focus on removing ALDFG (abandoned\, lost\, or otherwise discarded fishing gear) and other marine debris from the coastal waters of Cornwall and Devon. ALDFG\, often referred to as “ghost gear”\, continues to “fish” by entangling\, trapping\, and killing wildlife indiscriminately. Since its inception in 2014\, Fathoms Free has led initiatives to remove these hazardous materials from the ocean\, preventing further damage to the marine environment. The charity also collaborates with and supports other organisations by using its boats and experienced skippers to assist with conservation efforts that contribute to a cleaner\, safer ocean.\n\n\n\nBanished Baijis to Vanishing Vaquita\n\n\nStu Collier\n\n\n\nStuart is co-founder of Operation Cetacean and Conservation Chat UK Ltd\, he is an experienced lecturer with a passion for sustainability and species conservation. This presentation is personal\, Stu first heard of the Baiji whilst learning about conservation at University\, the story of the Baiji would change his life and career direction- how could a planet full of dolphin lovers allow this to happen? How did we get it so wrong? And how is it still happening? The ‘white finned’ dolphin (Baiji) is thought to be the first dolphin to become extinct as a direct consequence of human activity. Unfortunately\, it is happening again with the Vaquita (the world’s most endangered marine mammal). This presentation will discuss the plight of both species\, the causes of their demise and look at what is being done to help the vaquita.\n\n\n\nBlue Meadows – Introducing Citizen Science to Seagrass Conservation in the SW\n\n\nMegan Ross\n\n\n\nSeagrass creates extraordinary ecosystems brimming with life\, capable of protecting coastlines from storms and acting as a vital carbon store. Classed as one of the most rapidly declining habitats across the globe\, this fragile ecosystem is most heavily affected by physical damage\, including anchoring and dredging\, and poor water quality. This talk will introduce Blue Meadows as a holistic approach to seagrass conservation\, encompassing protection methods\, restoration at scale and empowering local communities to connect with and take action for the protection of their local seagrass meadows. We will explore how people can actively contribute to seagrass conservation in the South West\, through Blue Meadows water user surveys.\n\n\n\nThe Seal Project\n\n\nSarah Greenslade\n\n\n\nSince 2017 I’ve been photographing seals around South Devon. From a one off seal encounter\, it didn’t take long for this to become way more than just a hobby. From my first BDMLR (British Divers Marine Life Rescue) Marine Mammal Medics call out\, it became clear seal identification was my ‘thing’\, and that’s a massive part of what The Seal Project is known for. We survey\, monitor and record all the seals we see around the South Devon coastline 365 days a year\, entirely as volunteers. We know many of these seals not only by their fur patterns\, but by their patterns of behaviour. Through all we do\, we know we have the best understanding of the seals and their welfare. Each and every sighting of a seal still amazes me. Some seals return to a pattern\, others have confounded us\, confused us and even reduced us to tears by their unexpected sightings! They are amazing creatures.\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe invite you to join our Annual Summer Conference in Brixham this October\, hosted by Conservation Chat UK LTD. \nAs specialists in organizing environmentally focused events\, we’re dedicated to creating gatherings that place the natural world at the forefront\, with a special focus on our local region\, the Southwest of England. \nThis event will feature an inspiring lineup of guest speakers involved in species conservation. If you share our passion for the environment\, don’t miss this opportunity! The day will be packed with insightful presentations\, engaging discussions\, and valuable networking\, tailored for conservation professionals\, students\, early-career researchers\, and anyone passionate about the natural world. \nLight refreshments will be provided. To keep ticket costs affordable\, we ask attendees to bring a packed lunch—and challenge you to make it plastic-free! \nThis will be an in-person event only\, with a full refund policy in place if the event must be cancelled due to COVID-19.

SUMMARY:Water and Climate Change: 10 Things You Should Know
DESCRIPTION:Hear four speakers passionately discuss the implications of our changing world on a key area. Climate Change and water are intertwined\, from flooding and drought\, to increased demand and varying quality. \nWe’re looking at the 10 key changes you need to know: what we are already experiencing\, alongside what to expect in the coming years\, and the positive ways scientists and engineers are building resilience.. \nWe’ll examine the science behind attribution; what is the evidence that individual extreme flooding events – both inland and coastal – were affected by Climate Change? \nHow can we become more resilient in a changing world to extreme weather events and how does the artistic community work with scientists to communicate their work?

SUMMARY:UPCYCLE - from packaging to art
DESCRIPTION:Upcycle is an exhibition that explores the value assigned to materials in contemporary society. Eight artists show work of\, from and with the layers of packaging usually discarded once they have disgorged their content. \nIn Sam Hodge’s and Marisa Culatto’s work\, packaging becomes the medium\, while Susan Collis and Russell Herron make throwaway materials their lead subject; Gavin Turk and Leo Fitzmaurice turn spent vessels into artefacts. Shane Bradford’s paintings bear titles inspired by overpromising sales slogans\, whereas Sarah Pettitt’s abstract constructions are reminders of what is missing. \nPresented together they become a playful response to mass production and consumerism\, evidence of which abounds at the exhibition’s location in Central London.
