SUMMARY:Nature Walk: Chalk Streaming – Rivers Cray\, Darent and Thames
DESCRIPTION:This spring we invite you to walk the waterways of England\, navigating their gentle wildness alongside Sam Lee and special guest ecological pioneers.\nLeave your gadgets behind and spend a day chalk streaming together. \nLittle-known but quietly magnificent chalk streams are one of the UK’s natural wonders and ecological miracles. Despite all the environmental mistreatment they receive\, they continue to bubble up some of the finest waters in the land\, harbouring communities of life within and humans alongside. Their life-giving properties have shaped our nation\, inspired artists to create and conquerors to colonise. \nAs we walk we will take several moments en route to stop and explore the river together. We will share knowledge\, songs\, histories\, and return to the river the love that she has shown us humans over our millennia spent by her side. \nLittle-known but quietly magnificent chalk streams are one of the UK’s natural wonders and ecological miracles. SUMMARY:Terra Nexus
DESCRIPTION:Terra Nexus is an immersive experience featuring 25 artists produced by Proposition Studios. First opening at our former site in Peckham in October 2020\, the exhibition has now been reconstructed\, expanded and developed with 3 new installations and a new navigation around a multi-sensory labyrinthine of interconnected artist worlds. Sitting in the heart of 150 artist studios overlooking the Thames\, Terra Nexus presents interwoven immersive environments which reflect on the human relationship with the biosphere set against the backdrop of an ancient metropolis that is reawakening into a new post lockdown reality. \nSpringing from the foundational idea that we need to shift away from a narrative of human dominion and independence in order to protect the biosphere\, Terra Nexus installations explore the necessity of living soil; the perpetual migration of species; the cascading threat of impending extinctions; ways to reconnect with nature; conflict arising from depleted resources; the future of cities and how humans will live within them. From the perspectives of insects and animals\, through the eyes of scientists\, artificial intelligence\, plant life\, ancient cultures and conflicting contemporary viewpoints; Terra Nexus is a wormhole of ideas. \nWarping sensory experiences\, excavating\, weaving between co-existing timelines and suggesting alternative histories; this is the first of a series of immersive projects by Proposition Studios asking the viewer to raise their own questions about THE HUMAN AS PART OF ECOLOGY and what that means today and for future generations. \nIn preparation for this project\, the exhibiting artists took part in an intensive research residency\, visiting sites where human intervention has dramatically increased biodiversity while providing for human needs. Inspired by these projects of experts working to regenerate the biosphere and address global food problems; installations directly reference cutting edge science\, biodiverse agriculture and environmental activism.

SUMMARY:Singing With Nightingales: Dawn Chorus
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate International Dawn Chorus Day with this long-form live broadcast of birdsong and spoken word. \nJoin The Nest Collective online from 11pm on 1st May for a spoken-word journey\, hosted by Sam Lee\, through some of the finest poems and writings celebrating the nightingale\, the wonder of birds and the natural world. \nThis long-form broadcast will then drift into pure nightingale song through the night and\, as the birds rise\, will culminate in the dawn chorus itself\, finishing at 6am on Sunday 2nd May. \nThis live broadcast will be available for free on Youtube. \nWe are delighted to announce the contributors for this broadcast include: \nCaitlin Moran • Stewart Lee • Satish Kumar • John Lewis-Stempel • Jackie Morris • Rob Da Bank • Anita Sethi • Melissa Harrison • Mark Avery • Merlin Sheldrake • David Lindo • David Rothenberg • Mya-Rose Craig • Patrick Barkham • Farhana Yamin • Mary Colwell • Genevieve Tudor • Jay Griffiths \nInternational Dawn Chorus Day is the worldwide celebration of nature’s greatest symphony. All across the world people rise early to enjoy the sound of birdsong\, ‘from rattling wrens in Rotherham to crooning cowbirds in the Caribbean’. \nEach year\, for a short period mid-April\, a few thousand nightingales fly to southern UK from Africa. They can be heard in just a small number of special locations\, taking up songful residence after dusk. The territorial males serenade loyally each night for no more than six weeks among the blackthorn and forest margins\, giving unbelievable privilege to those who know where to go. \nIn this modern age\, with biodiversity in decline and habitats being eroded\, the nightingale has become representative of all that we have to lose. It is a small\, brown\, unremarkable-looking bird\, but it possesses one of nature’s finest singing voices. The bird winters in Africa but spends April to July mating and nesting in Europe and the Middle East. The numbers visiting England have declined so sharply that it is now on the UK’s Red List of species at the greatest conservation risk.

SUMMARY:PiP’s Plant Parlour by Mileece
DESCRIPTION:This bio-reactive\, plant-controlled installation aims to open pathways to relaxation and emotional healing through nature\, art and sound. \nDesigned by award winning and critically acclaimed artist Mileece\, the installation will enable participants to create original quadrophonic sound\, based on their interaction with plants. \nInside a mobile Pod\, the public can interact with the living landscape and connect to remote ecologies through immersive audio and imagery. \nCloaked with lush groves of plants; a bio-generated electronic and bioacoustic soundscape will generate a unique\, harmonic\, restorative sonic atmosphere that changes from living interactions. Small electrodes attached to leaves will sense subtle changes occurring within the physiology of plants\, the data will then be processed through Mileece’s self-authored software and transformed into unique musical soundscapes\, designed with the intention to be pleasing to both humans and the plants themselves.

SUMMARY:T.O.A.D. Show at Lesnes Abbey\, Bexley
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to our T.O.A.D. Show at Lesnes Abbey\, Bexley\, hosted by Froglife’s London Tails Of Amphibian Discovery (T.O.A.D.) Project. Come along for a fun day out for children and adults! \nThis event celebrates the successful pond restoration of Pine Pond carried out by Froglife and the local council in March 2019. Before the work\, Pine Pond had little native vegetation\, low oxygen levels and no breeding amphibians. Within 2 weeks of the restoration work\, toads were spotted breeding in the pond. The UK’s toad population has declined by 68% over the last 30 years so Pine Pond is now a valuable asset in helping the species survive. \nOur T.O.A.D Show will include a variety of free activities available for the public to get involved with\, including: \n• Free Wildlife Photography Workshops with an expert wildlife photographer\n• Virtual Reality Experience – See what life is like from a toad’s point-of-view!\n• Guided Walks around the site\n• Local street artists live-painting a mural of a common toad (1 of an edition of 7 in London)\n• Pond Doctor – Ask our resident expert any questions you have about amphibians or ponds\n• Information Stand – Learn how to identify London’s reptiles and amphibians and find out what it takes to build the perfect pond\n• Children’s activities
